Savage Dragon Is BACK! McFarlane Elite Edition Figure Review

00:00From the Chicago precinct to now collectible plastic, here's a look at McFarlane Toys Elite Edition Image Comic Founders Savage
00:07Dragon.
00:30Prior to helping form Image Comics in the 90s with six of his fellow comic book creators, Eric Larson worked
00:35on a variety of comic book titles from all the major American publishers.
00:38Megaton, The DNA Agents, Teen Titans, The Outsiders, The Doom Patrol, and The Punisher, though he's best remembered as the
00:44writer and artist on Spider-Man.
00:46His character Savage Dragon is one of the most enduring created-owned characters on the market, and Larson has crossed
00:52him over with many on-the-top characters in the field.
00:55Superman, Invincible, Hellboy, Spawn, and The Max, among others.
00:58The Savage Dragon had a widely popular animated series on the U.S. network in the 90s.
01:04Eric Larson is the only Image founder to have written and drawn every issue of his ongoing Image series, having
01:10written and drawn more consecutive issues on the superhero series than any other cartoonist.
01:15Unlike the Dragon, who is dealing with his amnesia, I do recall, though, there was a release of a Savage
01:20Dragon as part of the 10th anniversary Image Comic run,
01:23though he was much more limited when it comes to posability, not nearly as posable as the one that we're
01:28looking at right now.
01:30Before, though, we get a closer look at the founder's version of Savage Dragon, let's take the tape measure and
01:35see how tall the figure's going to stand.
01:36Oh, by the way, by the way, I did actually find this on the Facebook Marketplace.
01:41Yeah, you're right.
01:42From Popeye the Toy Man.
01:46As we go ahead, though, with measuring the figure, if I go right to the top of his head, you're
01:50looking at the figure being 7 inches.
01:51If, however, though, I go to the top of his fin, then he's actually more close to this 7 1⁄2
01:57inches.
01:57I guess we'll stick with his head.
01:59That's going to translate to a figure, though, that's 17 1⁄2 centimeters tall.
02:03Savage is one of seven of the founder's figures that we're going to be getting from Todd and his team.
02:07The other remaining six figures will be Spawn, Shadowhawk, Spartan, which I'm actually quite looking forward to, loving those Wildcats
02:13reading the comics as a kid.
02:15And there's also going to be Sarah Pizzini and Prophet.
02:18I'm wondering why they chose to go with Prophet as part of the Youngblood, but nonetheless, though, here's another Spawn.
02:24Now, the Spawn that we're getting as part of the founder's wave is going to, I believe, have a fabric
02:28cape.
02:29I think I like the plastic cape a little bit more that just also happened to be paired along with
02:33Batman.
02:34Now, I've got to admit, though, while I like the Spawn, I don't love the Batman, but there was technically
02:39a Batman vs. Spawn Batman, which usually I have as the stand-in instead.
02:44There's a lot of stuff that comes in clue with the dragon.
02:46First, the figure does have what I thought initially was a comic.
02:49Turned out, though, it's actually just a really thick cardboard.
02:53Come on in.
02:54This is, by the way, Image Comics issue number 30 of the Savage Dragon that so happens to also feature
03:00the Spawn.
03:01I suppose there could have been maybe a stand-in.
03:03Now, technically, though, Savage Dragon does have, though, really a stand-in, but he doesn't have, though, like a slot
03:08on the back.
03:09Like, had they put maybe a slot, maybe along here, you could have then taken the cardboard backing and then
03:16maybe put that in there instead.
03:17There's nothing really at all you can do with it.
03:19And while I do like that, it is a thick card, something that could be good for a stand-in.
03:24I think I'd rather, though, if it had been an issue, a way to really introduce new viewers to Savage
03:29Dragon that maybe haven't read the comic before.
03:31I feel like this also may have cost more money.
03:33I don't know.
03:34There's the back of it, by the way, which I guess, again, you could use to have display behind Savage
03:39Dragon, but there is no real display stand other than this stand right here.
03:43Whoops!
03:44That I just finished.
03:45Just dropped on the floor.
03:47Hold on one second.
03:48Let's just grab it on the floor here.
03:49There's the display stand.
03:52The stand, I think, is the exact same stand that we will be getting with the other Founders figures.
03:56The only one that I can say to agree with that idea is Shadowhawk.
04:01Shadowhawk has one, I think, that's actually a little bit lighter of a gray.
04:04I do like, though, that they've added all these little scratchings to the plastic.
04:07Kind of looks like something you'd see from the comic.
04:10There's the bottom of it, by the way.
04:11Of course, there is the peg that can plug into either one of Savage Dragon's boots.
04:15Along with that, though, the figure does also come in clear with a trading card.
04:19A trading card does have, for those that can't see, Image Comics Founders, all in gold on the left, and
04:24on the right, Elite Edition.
04:26The back of the card is meaty.
04:28The back of the card will take a lot of time on your part to read all straight through.
04:32You'll be happy to know, at least, though, I've read all of this for you, so I've saved yourself some
04:37time.
04:38I may have to make you work a little harder, though.

05:36Oh, I had not blown off nearly enough space dust.

05:44Elite with the E on the end.
05:45There's an N, a 6, a T, X, 7L, 4M, L, V.
05:51Got all that?
05:52I hope so.
05:53Let's put that off to the side.
05:55Okay, so Savage Dragon does, like I said, come and clue with quite a lot of things.
05:58He has, first of all, some swappable hands now.
06:01Being, of course, he does come and clue with two extra guns.
06:05I mean, these would be quite pointless, the close fist that he has on the ends of his forearms.
06:08Maybe entertain instead.
06:09The figure does have some trigger-firing hands, molded here all in green plastic.
06:15He does also come with a pair of relaxed hands, which I suppose could also be worked the same way
06:20and have him holding the guns.
06:22So there's that option also as well.
06:25To change out the hands, I was actually surprised to see what kind of peg we were dealing with.
06:29I thought I was going to be getting a much longer peg, a much skinnier peg.
06:33But then the moment you go to pull the hand off, you realize you get these stumpy little things.
06:37I mean, they do what they need to do.
06:39It's not like I necessarily can be complaining the fact that the pegs aren't long enough.
06:42Let's take ourselves some proper hands here.
06:45We'll just pop them back in place.
06:48I guess in one way, they probably could have been a little bit longer.
06:51Because sometimes, though, when you are putting things in his hands,
06:53you might find yourself inadvertently popping off the hands with the pegs.
06:57We'll put Savage Dragon back for here a second.
07:00Let's look at the other things that come into the figure.
07:02Okay, so he gets a couple of guns.
07:04A pistol.
07:06A machete.
07:09How are you spending all this extra budget on sound effects?
07:12Actually, that was coming from my mouth.
07:14The Uzi and the gun look like they've been molded here in black plastic.
07:18I don't see, however, though, any additional paint that's been added to them.
07:21But I don't think it needs any extra paint anyways.
07:23Anyways, take your Savage, take your guns, and the guns fit okay in his hands.
07:30If you're having a struggle, though, I mean, by all means, maybe heat the hand in hot water first.
07:34Take the pistol and put them into this hand as well.
07:37Whoops.
07:38There goes again one of the hands.
07:40I still feel like the hand...
07:42Dropping everything in this review.
07:44I feel like maybe the hands probably could have had a maybe longer peg.
07:48Let's put the gun, though, first in the hand.
07:50Fix the problem at hand.
07:53Oh, I see what I did there.
07:54And now we have Savage Dragon with both his guns.
08:00With all that, after dropping all of that stuff, let's just put everything to the side.
08:04There goes again his hand.
08:06Take the hand and pop it back.
08:08See, yeah, I feel like maybe with the hands being so short of a peg like this,
08:12they feel like they're constantly falling out of the figure's forearms.
08:16I guess the alternative with being such large arms like this,
08:20had they maybe given longer pegs,
08:22maybe it would have been a harder thing to try to remove and change the hands.
08:24I don't know.
08:24I don't know.
08:25What do I know?
08:26I'm just only the guy that's talking about the figure.
08:28And let's talk about the figure right now.
08:30Savage Dragon has two unique head sculpts.
08:33It's not just that they've taken one head and they've just put a mustache in front of him.
08:37Well, no, actually, this one has a mustache, but he does also have a smile.
08:41I'm not as much used to Savage Dragon actually having a mustache.
08:44I would probably end up going back, I feel, to the other head sculpt instead.
08:48He does also come in with a pair of shades.
08:51Choose which head you'd like to have with the shades, but make sure.
08:53Let's not drop these.
08:55I'm all thumbs, I feel, in this review.
08:58There we go.
08:59Get the glasses in place.
09:01That is a cool guy.
09:02That is a cool...
09:03I would love to be as cool as Savage Dragon.
09:05I mean, I probably wouldn't want to have green skin,
09:08nor would I have like a mohawk fin on the top of my head.
09:11But that's one cool cat.
09:14Or, I guess, one cool dragon.
09:16Now, again, he does have two different head sculpts.
09:18The head sculpts, though, also have different expressions.
09:21So, like, if you'd rather have just a neutral expression without maybe the mustache,
09:24this would probably be the better one to go with.
09:27This is more what I think of when I think of Savage Dragon.
09:29I don't tend to think of him really with a mustache.
09:32I feel, however, though, saying that,
09:34that there's definitely a lot more character with the mustached face.
09:37I think the smile works a little bit better myself.
09:39But, if you did want to go and change the head,
09:41let's just carefully, though, remove the glasses, put them off to the side.
09:44Just remove the head from the peg.
09:47Here we go.
09:48Take the head that we want to put in place,
09:51and put it in place just on top of the peg.
09:54And I guess for what we get now is a kind of more of a traditional Savage Dragon,
09:57one that if people close their eyes,
09:58and if you ever have dreams of a Savage Dragon, that's a little odd.
10:02But this probably would be what you'd be thinking about more so.
10:04I mean, maybe some of you guys would generally think of the handlebar mustache Savage Dragon.
10:08I'm not going to judge.
10:10I may judge one thing about the figure,
10:12and I think overall I like the look of the body.
10:14Obviously, proportionately, he's much more narrower in the legs.
10:17Very skinny legs.
10:19I mean, I wouldn't say he skips leg day,
10:21but he spends more days, I feel, working out his arms,
10:24his biceps, triceps, and everything else.
10:27It's a really large, massive figure.
10:29I do like that they've also added a little bit of lighter green in there as well.
10:32He's got some nice light green on his face and also on the fin as well.
10:36One issue I have really with the figure is the way they've designed the joints.
10:40The joints, I'm guessing they went with more of a streamlined, seamless look.
10:44I mean, it isn't so much a seamless look.
10:46I mean, clearly you can see there's a line right there all the way down and all around.
10:49And it looks pretty finished from the back
10:52until the moment you go and change and bend the arms.
10:55As soon as you bend the arms, the arm does do a pretty good job on the front.
11:01I'm not complaining it necessarily there.
11:03However, though, on the back of the arm, it's more so right here.
11:06He has now free air conditioning, this big gap space right here.
11:11And I'm not sure why it had to be there, I guess,
11:13because there is probably a ledge that works inside.
11:16I mean, again, it looks finished when you have the arm straight.
11:19And it looks not bad here on the front.
11:21It doesn't even really look bad when you bend the arm.
11:22But say, like, the moment you want to lift his arm up,
11:25now he's got, again, these big visible openings there on his forearms.
11:29But I guess, really, in the end,
11:30how many people are going to have their Savage Dragons with their arms up like this?
11:34You're likely going to be, I'm sure, just having the arms down.
11:36Or at the very most, you're probably going to have the arms straight.
11:39It is, though, again, like,
11:40it's just one thing that I would have maybe changed the figure.
11:43The hard part, though, is for me to say I would have changed that onto the figure.
11:46If somebody would have said, well, what would you have done differently?
11:49I really wouldn't have been able to give them a proper answer.
11:51I do like that he's got a tank top here.
11:54Now, the tank top does actually have a little more of a sculpted finish there to it.
11:58Of course, he does also have his badge, Chicago PD.
12:01Belt looks good.
12:02I mean, like, the pants just generally do look quite good.
12:05I was kind of also thinking, too,
12:06like, how would he be able to hold such large weight on the top of his body with such small
12:10legs?
12:11He does it okay.
12:12I mean, obviously, one benefit, too, is at least he has peggles on the bottoms of said feet.
12:16And he also, of course, comes to include a display stand as well.
12:19For Savage Dragon's articulation, his head is going to be on a ball joint.
12:23I find sometimes, though, I end up doing this.
12:25I end up turning the body as I'm showing you the head.
12:27Let's just keep the body in one place.
12:29Turn the head all the way around.
12:32The fin, by the way, in case you're curious, isn't a soft plastic.
12:36It's not a brittle plastic.
12:37It's somewhere meeting in the middle.
12:39It's literally somewhere meeting in the middle.
12:42The head can look up and down.
12:43Not so much down.
12:45That's really as far down as it's going to go.
12:46The head looks up all the way, but sometimes, though, when you are lifting the head too high up, it
12:51ends up popping the head off the peg.
12:53The abdomen or torso is on a ball joint.
12:56The abdomen also is on a ball joint, and it moves quite freely, too.
13:00Arms rotate all the way around.
13:01With the arms also, you can hinge them out.
13:04Again, there goes the hands.
13:06We'll just pop the hand back where we put it back where we found it.
13:10There we go.
13:11It's interesting, also, when you look at Savage Dragon, that he's got sculpted areas here that, for a second, looks
13:17like it's a torn shirt.
13:19I'm guessing it's supposed to be really part of his body, but why did they make it so jagged like
13:24this?
13:25Because it actually looks like he's either got ripped skin or a ripped shirt.
13:29I guess that's one other thing that's a little jarring about the figure.
13:32He has a bicep swivel.
13:34He has a bend in the elbow.
13:35Not so much of a bend.
13:37I mean, clearly, he has large arms anyways, and a very large bicep.
13:40Hands do rotate all the way around.
13:42You can hinge them back and forth.
13:44Legs split, and they split pretty far, too.
13:47Forward and back.
13:48That's as far forward.
13:50That's as far back.
13:52Swivel at the top of the thigh.
13:53Nice, tight joints for the knees.
13:56Equally tight joints also for the ankles or the calves.
13:59You can move them back and forth.
14:00And the figure does also have toe articulation as well.
14:04Positive points for Savage Dragon is I like the sculpt a lot.
14:07Positive points also is I really like the paint on him, too.
14:10I think they've done a nice job of adding some lighter greens on the tops of his arms.
14:15It's not everywhere, though.
14:16I mean, when you flip the figure around, there's a lot less of it, really, on the back of the
14:20figure's body.
14:21I like the way they've sculpted his arms.
14:23His arms are massive the way that they really should be, like they are in the comics.
14:26The downside, of course, is by giving him this type of joint.
14:30It isn't so bad, again, from the front.
14:32It isn't really even so bad from the back.
14:33It's bad more so when you see it from the bottom.
14:36But, again, how many people are going to see it from the bottom?
14:39The only other thing I would say is, like, again, he's got this weird, again, kind of shredded thing that
14:45he's got on the top of his body.
14:47I'm not sure why it had to really be there.
14:49I could see, though, if that maybe was going to be originally part of his shirt.
14:52So, like, his shirt would have been ripped.
14:54That would have made more sense.
14:55But I'm not sure, though, why they made it so shredded like that, if that's supposed to be part of
14:59his body.
15:00Head sculpt-wise, again, you get two offerings.
15:02Of course, you've got the one with the mustache.
15:04I like the look of the smile on his face.
15:05But I think for OG looks of Savage Dragon, I'm more inclined to probably just have him displayed.
15:10Have him looking like this.
15:11And maybe, if anything, maybe bring back the glasses when I have him on display.
15:16Lastly, though, I mean, again, Savage Dragon does have that large cardboard stand.
15:20Which, again, really isn't so much so a stand.
15:22I mean, you'd have to find probably something to prop underneath it.
15:25Like, if they had put, like, a little standing, like, clear base or something like that.
15:29Then you could have that displayed.
15:30If not for that, then you'd have to find a way to prop it against the wall.
15:34I hope to have plans of picking up the remaining Founder's figure wave.
15:37The only figure, actually, I've seen online, aside from Savage Dragon, was Shadowhawk.
15:42Like, Spawn, I think, is already out, yet I can't see Spawn anywhere.
15:46Maybe he is going to be coming out a little bit later.
15:48To be fair, though, I don't know if I'm going to like as much having a fabric cape on Spawn.
15:53I think a plastic cape, especially with that kind of cape, the way that he's got it designed,
15:57I think probably would work a little bit better, honestly, in plastic.
16:00Then between now and, I think, December, they're going to be spanning out all the remaining figures,
16:05Wildcat Spartan, Witchblades, Ser Pazzini, and Youngblood's Prophet.
16:10I'm not sure, though, if I would have maybe gone with Prophet.
16:13Shaft, I feel, would have made a better sense.
16:15Shaft or maybe Chapel.
16:17But maybe we will eventually get more remaining figures of Youngblood,
16:20and they're maybe only just considering right now Prophet.
16:23Prophet, I guess, to be fair, how many figures really have we gotten from Prophet
16:26since Image Comics and since, really, McFarlane Toys first originated.
16:31Not, though, the first Savage Dragon, the first one was part of the 10th anniversary.
16:35I definitely think, though, that this is the better-looking figure.
16:37It's not only a lot taller, it has a lot more poseability.
16:41The poseability is generally good, except for, again, that one little area in the elbows
16:45and this weird-looking shreddedness that he has on the torso piece of his body,
16:50which, again, looks more like it's supposed to be a shirt,
16:52but it looks more, by the way it's been painted, I guess it's supposed to be part of his skin.
