00:00So if you win tonight, you will be the first woman in 40 years to win Best Prize, is that
00:05true?
00:06The first American woman, yes.
00:08The first American woman, okay. Does that feel like too big of a gap?
00:13I think so, yes. I would say yes. There's so many worthy writers out there, and I am a friend
00:19to all kinds of writers, all genders of writers,
00:23and there's room for all of us, but it feels particularly gratifying just to be able to use my voice
00:28as a woman.
00:29And that's what I love about writing plays.
00:31Do you feel like your time in this world, that the doors for different types of voices has gotten better
00:39over time?
00:40In some ways, yes, and not in every way.
00:43How do you think it hasn't?
00:44I think we're living through a very scary moment for all marginalized people, and we have to really come together
00:51and support them and lift them up and protect them and protect each other.
00:55And so to the extent that I can be a small part of that, that's what I'm here to do.
00:59And how do you try and be strong with your voice? Because obviously this is a broadcast that's on CBS.
01:03What's happening with 60 Minutes is very crazy. There's a lot happening in the media world.
01:07How do you try and be strong with your voice and really speak up for marginalized voices?
01:12I think telling the truth is my first priority. I think representing people who might not otherwise have representation on
01:21stage.
01:22And I think just being able to be part of the community and uplift each other and also put our
01:29own stories out there.
01:30That's what I can do.
