00:00Jalen Brown got sent to the 76ers last night.
00:03A lot of people in Boston upset about this trade.
00:06Apparently, according to Sham Sharanya, Jalen Brown never requested a trade.
00:10This will put, to some folks, a bit of a dent in the LeBron hopes.
00:15Let's listen to some of our friends over at our sister station.
00:1798.5, the Sports Hub.
00:19Here's Tony Mazzarotti. He hates the trade.
00:21I hate it with a freaking passion.
00:23This was a salary dump or a contract dump or define it however you want.
00:28This is ridiculous.
00:29This is a ridiculous trade.
00:31Paul George is 36 years old, and to save one year of money?
00:35One year of money, Jimmy, is what you're telling me, that George is getting paid for the next two.
00:39Is there any sort of player option or anything after that?
00:41Not that I'm seeing.
00:42So the Celtics just traded a guy that they took with the number three pick in the draft,
00:47who's been here 10 years, who's MVP of the NBA Finals,
00:50wingman to Jason Tatum, if not his equal, pretty damn close.
00:54And they traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers for a 36-year-old guy who looks like he's getting near
01:00the end.
01:01There was a little bit of a resurgence there in the postseason.
01:04But a guy who's been a failure pretty much everywhere he's gone since he left Indiana.
01:08Two firsts and two seconds?
01:09I hate it.
01:11It was a money dump.
01:12That's all it was.
01:13And the Celtics now today are worse than they were yesterday.
01:16Christian Arcand, 93-7 WEI in Boston.
01:21He went a little further with it.
01:23I hate this.
01:25I can't believe how bad this is.
01:26Every single rumored trade that I saw is better than this.
01:29This is worse than the Luka Doncic trade.
01:32I'm not kidding.
01:32I think this is worse than the Luka trade.
01:34You're off the hook, Nico.
01:35This is one of the worst trades in Celtics history, maybe?
01:39And you've got to remember, Danny Ainge was a very good executive for a long time.
01:43Brad started off his executive career very well.
01:46Red Auerbach was here for a long time.
01:47Made some good trades.
01:48The Patino era is probably as bad as it gets since, like, the Chauncey Billups trade, maybe?
01:52This is awful.
01:53I can't believe this.
01:55I want, like, a welfare check on Brad Stevens.
01:57Did he make this trade under duress?
01:58Is he being tortured somewhere in a CAA black site?
02:01Yes!
02:02What happened?
02:04So they're very upset about this.
02:07Yesterday, the initial reaction on afternoon drive, they were very upset.
02:11I mean, they thought that this was a huge dent in our hopes to be able to get LeBron James
02:15here.
02:16Now, you hear how much they love Jalen Brown over there in Boston.
02:19This is a big move.
02:20The 76ers became very good.
02:22That's another team that people are going to put over you in the Eastern Conference here.
02:27Yeah, I don't know about that.
02:28I don't.
02:29I'm not necessarily sold.
02:30Let's hear you.
02:31Let's hear you.
02:31I'm fine.
02:32I am stunned.
02:33I'm stunned, too.
02:34I think everybody is stunned.
02:35Not the analytics community.
02:37There are some people out there who said, actually, Paul George was better than Jalen Brown last year.
02:40And I'm like, I give up.
02:42Guys, you can find any.
02:44But you understand my point is, I can find any number, any metric to make something good or something bad.
02:51That's my issue with it.
02:52I thought he was one of the best basketball players in the entire league last year.
02:56He would have been on my first team if I had a ballot.
02:58Like, never stop exploring.
03:00Never stop thinking.
03:01But it just sounds to me like you're trying to find ways to fudge numbers in a quarterly earnings report.
03:07Like, that's how that comes off to me.
03:09You know by your eyesight sometimes what's going on.
03:12And I don't mean to have gut feelings.
03:13And I'm not trying to argue against intelligence.
03:15But some of that stuff, we know which player is the better player.
03:18Come on.
03:19And just think about, and I'm just as guilty as I think everybody around the league was when talking about
03:25potential Jalen Brown trades.
03:26We were wondering, is it an Evan Mobley swap?
03:31Donovan Mitchell?
03:32And then you see what actually got traded.
03:34And it was, you know, the cadaver that is Paul George, who did have some nice moments in one round
03:39of the playoffs this year.
03:40But holy cow.
03:41I mean, this is a guy that a lot of people thought his contract was untradeable.
03:46And so he gets moved.
03:48Bill Simmons says he had one of the worst contracts in the NBA.
03:50And he got swapped.
03:52I know there was some draft equity as well.
03:54But this still is absolutely stunning that this went down the way it did.
03:59Much in the same way that the Luka trade, when we were wondering why wasn't this available to the rest
04:06of the league.
04:06Like if you told everybody around the league that this is the value of this player, then other teams would
04:13have gotten in.
04:13So do you believe that this really hurts our chances to get LeBron?
04:17No.
04:18Because there seemed to be some...
04:19I'm a little surprised that people took it that way.
04:22Although, you know, did you see that Mike Gansey's brother tweeted out an old school picture of Gansey in high
04:30school?
04:31Did Mike Gansey's brother go to school in Northeast Ohio?
04:33I imagine he's the Bulls guy.
04:35I assume, but we don't know because I'm asking whose side are you on?
04:40Don't you want LeBron?
04:42Well, fine.
04:43But okay, it makes sense.
04:45But it's funny, he had a picture, and I'm like, whoa, all these, this takes me back to my high
04:50school days, seeing all these, got Mike Patrick from Perry, all these really good players.
04:55And then Gansey is standing next to LeBron, and it had people going, is LeBron going to sign in Philly?
05:01Maxie is a Rich Paul client?
05:03Everything's a possibility at the very end.
05:05Because nobody would have saw that coming.
05:07Well, it's 720, because I got to tell you, I think, I'm going to bring up, I'm going to get
05:12deeper into it a little bit at 720.
05:13I want to tell you this right now, but he spent eight years of his career with the Lakers, and
05:19if you heard any of the Lakers fans over the last 48 hours, like, they're not mad, but they're just
05:24nonplussed over the last eight years.
05:29They won a championship, I understand, was the bubble.
05:31They won a championship, they're just, it was a business transaction of business transactions.
05:35And so if you're one of these other cities, you're going, well, if he was willing to go to the
05:39L.A., and they're not even going to build a statue of him, and people are arguing against retiring his
05:44number out there, which is like, well, he's one of the top three greatest players of all time.
05:48You probably would anyway, but that's not my argument to make.
05:51Yeah, if you were in Philadelphia, why the hell not?
05:53Why wouldn't you take a swing?
05:54If you were any team that's competitive, and he told Rich Paul, which he did over 24 hours ago, find
06:03the team that, have all the teams that are interested, make their best pitch to you, and then we'll get
06:08it sorted out over time.
06:09So if you're the 76ers, is that not Mike Gansey's job?
06:12Is that not the job of the Heat, of the Cavs, of the Warriors, of probably, I'm sure another team
06:18will be brought up here over time?
06:20It is their job.
06:21So now all the other teams in the league, with the exception of the Lakers, obviously, have to find a
06:26way, or at least have the discussion, and have a serious discussion of whether or not, because he's clearly open
06:32for business here.
06:33Like, I will say, with the 76ers making this move, I don't know what he's thinking.
06:39It looks online like he's all about home, all about Akron, all about coming back and putting together a part
06:46three.
06:47It looks that way, but I can't guarantee how he's thinking about all this.
06:51So I think everybody's open, because if you do have an attractive roster, I think you should have a legitimate
06:56chance at this.
06:57Why wouldn't you?
06:58So I would love to play the nostalgia card.
07:02I would love to play the coming back home card.
07:04And I do believe we have a good roster.
07:06We do have a good roster.
07:07These are good basketball players.
07:09This is a good basketball team.
07:10But if he finds a better, more attractive offer, he may very well just do that.
07:16So it's all hands on deck for all these teams, because it's not just retirement and all that other crap.
07:22He can help a team win.
07:24So yeah, you would do that, Tone.
07:27I'm still shell-shocked, though.
07:28I can't believe that this was the return for Jalen Brown, somebody who I said immediately would be our best
07:34player if we traded for him.
07:35Obviously, the NBA world does not think the same way.
07:38There's no way.
07:39Or was there just no sweepstakes at all?
07:41Was this just a deal where they called Boston Brad Stevens, and that was it?
07:46They said, hey, keep a lid on it.
07:47We're working on this deal.
07:48And Brad Stevens didn't turn around to the rest of the NBA to see what he could get for Jalen
07:53Brown?
07:53They got picks.
07:54They did get picks.
07:55They wanted picks out of it.
07:57I know that it doesn't seem like it's the best haul in the world.
08:00But again, when you have a guy that's going on—
08:02What do those picks even mean, though, with Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey?
08:06I understand that.
08:06How valuable are those picks ever going to be?
08:07You are right about that.
08:08But you also have a guy that's going on Twitch, and I understand he did not officially ask for a
08:14trade.
08:14He did not publicly—
08:15Didn't need to.
08:15Did you see?
08:16Exactly.
08:17That's what I'm saying.
08:18So you have a very talented, very good basketball player who didn't, quote-unquote, ask for a trade.
08:24But if anybody saw your face, you know the cross-eyed face you just gave me.
08:28Because everybody knows, like, okay, good luck getting him to show up to camp.
08:31We'll see what he actually does.
08:32So if that's going to be the way—the rest of the NBA knows that—you're not going to get full power
08:37for that.
08:37So he made that trade.
08:38Now, could he have gotten something better from somebody else?
08:40I would say that you could have got Evan Mobley back, but they're obsessed with picks in Boston.
08:45They always have been, from whether it was Danny Ainge to Brad Stevens.
08:49I just can't see these picks being any good.
08:50And you are right, but they're going to want those picks in return.
08:53And they're going to put it around Jason Tatum, and that's going to be it.
08:56I think me, you, the afternoon show, everybody in Cleveland, anybody who wants the Cavs to do well,
09:06who has questions about how this team was going to either pivot this offseason
09:10or, you know, try to become even better come playoff time.
09:15What is Kobe Altman working on?
09:17What must he be working on?
09:19Because I would be stunned if it's just to run it back without, you know, Dean Wade, Keon Ellis, just
09:26run it back.
09:27I think he's got to be working on something.
09:29And clearly, it's not Jalen Brown because that door has been closed.
09:32What other names are out there, then, that would attract him?
09:34I'm asking you very tough questions right now because I don't think the general public really knows.
09:39Going into the offseason, I had mentioned, I said, we're going to have some uncomfortable conversations after Giannis.
09:43They could involve Kawhi Leonard and people like, well, you don't want to get older.
09:47Well, other guys that could have some injury risk attached to him, you know, Anthony Davis was somebody I had
09:53brought up, Zion Richardson.
09:55But could it just be a, could it be a move for better spacing on Lowry marketing?
10:00Could it, could it be a trade for somebody like that?
10:06Debbie, Avya, you know, could it, could it be somebody like that?
10:08I don't know what, what are they going to be working on?
10:11Because I, I'd be stunned, especially with the Raptors getting better and now Philadelphia getting better.
10:17I'd be stunned if they are just running it back.
