Everyone is talking about Brandon Aiyuk and Stefon Diggs, but does Washington even need another receiver?
Transcript
00:00I'd like to have a conversation about Brandon Iyuk,
00:02the football player,
00:03that is not dictated by social media videos.
00:08Because the football player that is Brandon Iyuk
00:11was very good.
00:13Two years of a word, was.
00:15We have seen him be good on the football field.
00:18We don't know if he's there yet.
00:19We have seen him help a team.
00:21Yeah.
00:21But it's years removed now.
00:24He has not made a catch in the NFL since October of 2024.
00:26Joe Biden was still president.
00:28A lot has changed since then.
00:30He has played five NFL seasons.
00:34He now hasn't played for about a year and a half.
00:38In 2023, the Niners went to the Super Bowl.
00:40He was fantastic.
00:4175 catches, 1,342 yards, seven touchdowns.
00:45The year prior to that, he was good.
00:4778 catches, 1,015 yards, eight touchdowns.
00:51His first two seasons were good to find.
00:54He didn't get over 1,000.
00:57First year, he had injury trouble.
01:00Brandon Iyuk, the football player, requires asking this question.
01:03Does Washington have to add a wide receiver?
01:06Do you feel confident in Terry McLaurin and the rest of this group?
01:09You can look at the rest of the group optimistically.
01:12You can look at it skeptically.
01:14Like, that is the situation they've created.
01:15They did draft a kid in the third round that they're real excited for.
01:18I want to let folks weigh in on the phones.
01:22Adrian is in Burke.
01:23Adrian, does Washington need to add a receiver?
01:26Hey, guys.
01:27Yeah.
01:28Thanks for the great show.
01:29Thanks for the opportunity to talk.
01:30Thanks, dude.
01:31I think they do.
01:32Yeah, I think they do.
01:33But I am honestly not sure if Stephon Diggs or Brandon Iyuk is the receiver they should be trying to
01:38add.
01:39I think we need a dedicated – I'd like to see a dedicated end zone receiver.
01:43I wish we had an Art Monk on this roster.
01:46I was wishing we went after, like, a Mike Evans or – I don't know if Keenan Allen is still
01:50available.
01:50But I wish we had, like, a tower of power for Jaden to throw to in the red zone.
01:56And so I do think we're kind of missing that in the roster.
02:00I think there's a spot for a quality red zone receiver.
02:05And to be fair with what we have with Terry and the team and the rookies or the young guys,
02:10I'm not sure that Stephon Diggs or Brandon Iyuk really – or move the needle in terms of what the
02:17team needs.
02:18So it's a great call.
02:19Thanks, Adrian.
02:20Appreciate you, bud.
02:21Thanks for the kind words.
02:22But we ask this question all the time.
02:25And for me, I don't know if we really understand how the NFL works anymore today.
02:36Chad could probably be the answer to that question.
02:40But when you ask that question, no one will ever say, we got a tight end that runs faster than
02:44most linebackers.
02:45That's a guy that – a master of getting yak, okay?
02:50If he comes out here this year and takes a step forward like they expect him to do,
02:56he can alleviate some of the pressure of a guy having to be that number two receiver.
02:59You get what I'm saying?
03:00Yeah.
03:00And then some of these other guys can step in and be the third guy and fill in some stuff.
03:08But you have to let those guys play.
03:11All we talked about as a fan base for the whole last three, four months was just getting somebody else
03:18in here.
03:19Come play.
03:21But we have not leaned to the guy that had played last year and was damn good.
03:26We lean to the guy that didn't play for the last two years.
03:30And we don't know where his headspace really is.
03:33You know what I mean?
03:34Now, this guy say the tower power.
03:37Everybody don't have six foot four or six five guys.
03:41And I don't think you necessarily need that per se in this day and age because you can't touch the
03:48damn receiver anyway.
03:49And if any receiver in this league is anything about themselves and you can't – if you can't get open
03:54one-on-one,
03:55you shouldn't be in a damn league.
03:57I believe they have guys that can get that done.
04:00Phones are open 800-636-1067.
04:03800-636-1067.
04:05Will is in Fairfax.
04:07Willie, you think they need an ad at wideout?
04:10Okay.
04:11Yeah, we do.
04:11Good afternoon, gentlemen.
04:13How you doing, bud?
04:16So, my biggest thing is that I think we're looking at this all along.
04:19Both these guys are band-aids.
04:20And Terry is literally on a one-year deal at this point.
04:24This is about the future.
04:25I think we need to use some of our draft capital and go get someone in the trade.
04:29There's four guys out there right now.
04:30Harrison, Thomas, Olive, Wilson.
04:33All guys have got another year or two left on their rookie contracts.
04:36All teams without quarterbacks that don't really need them.
04:39Those teams would take a second and a third-round pick to bring those in.
04:43We need to have someone to help Jaden develop going forward, not a band-aid, where next year we have
04:48to decide whether we pay Terry $34 million and extend them once again and have that fight.
04:53I think this is a discussion where we have to go out and swing big for our quarterbacks that are
04:58still on a rookie deal.
05:00What draft capital are you talking about?
05:03I think we could go get a guy like Marvin Harrison for a second and a fourth.
05:07He's fallen out of favor in Arizona.
05:11Brian Thomas had a disappointing sophomore year.
05:13I don't know what Olave and Wilson are doing.
05:15I don't think anybody really named what their student party put about.
05:18I think New Orleans thinks they're going to be a playoff team.
05:21I don't think Olave would be available.
05:22The Jets just extended Wilson to a big number.
05:29Listen, I don't think you're talking crazy.
05:32We get a lot of people that talk crazy.
05:33I don't think you're talking crazy.
05:34If you could go get a stud young receiver, I could wrap my brain around that for sure.
05:41The Marvin Harrison one is the one that interests me because clearly the Cardinals are tearing it down to rebuild
05:46it.
05:47They don't have a quarterback right now.
05:49Now, Jacoby's in a contract situation.
05:53I don't think he's falling out of favor.
05:55He had nobody to throw him the damn ball.
05:56Yeah.
05:57The Cardinals drafted somebody, but I can't imagine they think that's the plan.
06:01That's an interesting call.
06:04Now, we haven't gotten the BA supporters that are like, that's the guy.
06:07It has to be the guy.
06:09I know they exist.
06:10Shout out to Manny and Southeast.
06:10A lot of them out there.
06:13I think it's an interesting question.
06:17Here, to me, Diggs makes a lot more sense than IU.
06:20But my only hesitation with Diggs, and I'm curious where you are on this, B, draft Antonio Williams.
06:26There's real excitement around Antonio Williams.
06:29We didn't get to see a lot in the offseason because he was nicked up.
06:33They just held him out.
06:34He did go in minicamp, and I felt encouraged watching.
06:40Williams, listen, guys are going to line up in different spots.
06:42I understand that, but primarily, Williams projects as a slot guy.
06:47I would expect 40% to 50% of his snaps to be out of the slot.
06:52If you sign Steph Diggs, there was a period of time, especially when he was in Buffalo
06:56and earlier in his career in Minnesota, he was outside.
07:00He was running the Z fairly often, right?
07:05As his career transitioned, like last year in New England, I bet 50% of his snaps were out of
07:10the slot.
07:10I just, I don't know if Diggs comes in and it stunts Antonio Williams,
07:17and IU is a more traditional outside receiver.
07:21So that's like from a straight football perspective, the one factor I would say IU over Diggs
07:29is that he's more of a traditional outside guy, and I want to develop my stud.
07:33But isn't it in this offense right here, supposedly moving forward, the routes are now interchangeable
07:40between the receivers?
07:41There should be.
07:42So if Diggs is a guy who's played outside, played inside, he can run it anyway.
07:46He don't have to be necessarily inside or outside.
07:49IU is an outside guy.
07:51Yeah.
07:51Diggs can do both of them.
07:54I'd rather an interchangeable guy than a guy that does just one thing.
07:58The other part of this, when people talk about they want a big guy, people are not aware.
08:05Because in my position, I've spent a fair amount of time with Traylon Burks.
08:10He's a big guy.
08:11He's probably 6'2", 6'3", like broad shoulders.
08:15We saw it in the touchdown catch against Denver.
08:18If you want a dude you can throw fades to in the red zone, it's Burks.
08:22Not to mention Terry's really good at that stuff too, at contested catches particularly.
08:29The issue with Burks, I think, is in hindsight, we slammed them for going into the season with
08:38Noah Brown as your number two wide receiver, knowing his injury history.
08:42They're kind of doing the same thing with Burks.
08:44Burks is kind of going into the season as the guy that's going to be opposite Terry the
08:47most, and he has significant injury history.
08:50So maybe you think he's younger and now it's going to work out, but there is a similar track
08:57record there of the projected number two guy has dealt with injuries throughout his NFL
09:03career, and that's just the reality.
09:05So when people say they do have to add a receiver, I can understand why people say you have to
09:11add a receiver.
09:12I don't know that I would say you have to add a certain player, but you know who will?
09:17My guy Manny in Southeast.
09:18What's up, Manny?
09:21Hey, how y'all doing, fellas?
09:24We're good, bud.
09:24I heard my name, man.
09:26You know, I'm always listening, man.
09:27So, hey, you know, I thought I'd just come on through and tell you, JP, you're absolutely
09:32correct.
09:33I want Brian to add you.
09:34But I've also said I'll take both of them.
09:38I've also said I agree with Brian about cheese.
09:40The point I'm making is the same point that the young man made before me when he said that
09:46we're looking for a stud now because Terry on way out the door and ain't nobody in there,
09:53even Brian, can't say that we have found a replacement for Terry.
09:56Is there anybody on our team right now that y'all can say y'all think is better than Terry?
10:01No, I can't say that, but you know what?
10:03I'm not thinking about two, three years down the road like y'all do.
10:05I'm thinking about this damn year.
10:07Right.
10:08And I'm with you with Cheek.
10:09Man, listen, I'm with you with Cheek.
10:10I'm like the young boy running back that we got out of the undrafted free agency, too.
10:16Robert Henry.
10:17He's going to be a monster catching that ball out the back.
10:19But I'm with you.
10:20That's why I don't argue with you.
10:21My beef with everybody was they jumped on Brandon IU in favor of San Francisco.
10:28And I've always said it had to be something more to it because don't nobody just give up
10:33$30 million.
10:34It ain't Brandon IU going to bust.
10:36Brandon IU can't fall out of favor with me because I'm from Southeast.
10:40And we don't deal with Bama.
10:42We don't do nothing with Bama.
10:43Brian, you know that.
10:44Oh, yeah.
10:45We don't do nothing with Bama.
10:46He come in with that Bama mess we ain't going for.
10:49But at the same time, if he on point and if he can do see bigs and them plug-in
10:55players
10:56for this year, I need something we got to look for because who's coming up next?
11:02J5's contract.
11:04We need somebody to go with him.
11:05You know what I mean?
11:07Going to be big.
11:07Brian Thomas will go pick.
11:09You know what I mean?
11:09I appreciate you, Manny.
11:10We got a break, brother.
11:11Have a great Fourth of July.
11:12I don't talk to you, bud.
11:13I don't know.
