Should Washington go after Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk, or bring back Deebo Samuel?
Transcript
00:00And Jawan Jennings, we're now close to two weeks into free agency, right?
00:05The market hasn't materialized.
00:07I saw a report, I believe it was Vic Taffer from The Athletic,
00:11saying San Fran's not bringing him back.
00:13They've spent the money.
00:14They spent the money on Mike Evans.
00:16They also brought in Christian Kirk.
00:18So he's not going back to San Fran.
00:21He's still a free agent.
00:22There was talk of $20 million for Jawan Jennings.
00:25If that hasn't happened already, I don't think it's happening.
00:27He may be able to go back to San Fran once they release IU.
00:31Yeah, but just considering the amount of money they've spent at the receiver position,
00:34I feel like that's not going to happen.
00:36But possibly.
00:38Maybe you don't rule it out.
00:40But the thing over here, like I've said, even I've said when people talk about Debo,
00:45everything has to make sense here.
00:48And if we look at it now, you have to be on the rock
00:51if you don't think they're waiting to see when IU gets released.
00:54But then again, I worry and I wonder how long they're going to wait for that to happen.
00:58So, it seems like it'll be post-June 1, just for their contract's sake.
01:05Now, you could release him with a post-June 1 designation.
01:10And forgive me, you're only allowed to do two players with post-June 1 designations.
01:13It's possible San Fran's already maxed that out.
01:17It's also possible they're just not going to do him any favors,
01:19and they're not going to release him until June.
01:20I don't think that.
01:21Okay.
01:21Yeah.
01:23So, the IU thing, I don't think is on.
01:26The IU thing is in the wrong lane, right?
01:30Like, you took the express lane, got here with no traffic.
01:33I took the local, hit all the traffic.
01:35The IU joints on the local with the accident traffic.
01:38Yeah, yeah.
01:38It's not going to happen anytime soon.
01:40Jawan Jennings is free and available right now.
01:42Yeah.
01:43Are you interested?
01:45I am interested, but for the right price.
01:48So, you look at it, the talk was $20 million.
01:52And then the $20 million bus came through, and when he got to the stops,
01:56there was nobody there to accept him.
01:59That is going to keep dropping.
02:01And I think they have their mind set on what they want to do at that position.
02:05And they have to, I think they need to stick to it.
02:09I agree that there's obviously a number involved here.
02:13I think they could really be served well with a physical receiver like Jennings presents.
02:17I mean, that's what Noah Brown was, and I just don't think you can trust Noah Brown with the injury
02:21history.
02:22And I wonder, there's Mr. Beasley.
02:26And I wonder, presented with these options, because I did Galdi's podcast this morning,
02:34and Galdi asked a good question.
02:36Debo's still out there.
02:37Yeah.
02:38What's your interest level?
02:39That's still the price.
02:41I mean, if you look at when he came in last year, and you know what he made last year,
02:47and I think Debo's camp and his mindset is still, I was able to do that without somebody else on
02:52the other side
02:53with different quarterbacks, I expect a certain level.
02:56And I think the team is like, yeah, but we think this.
03:00And it gets to that point in the NFL where they will tell you what you're worth.
03:06Every other team, and their interest in you, tells you what you're worth.
03:10We can sit up here and think we are worth $20 million all we want.
03:13But if everybody offering us $10 and $9, we are worth $9.5 basically.
03:19So the whole thing is you have to let that thing play out,
03:22and it comes down to how long the other person is going to wait
03:25and how long you have to wait.
03:27For sure.
03:29For me, they've added needed depth at wide receiver, which they had to do.
03:35The depth was a problem.
03:37And because you have Burks, Lane, and McCaffrey, all young guys,
03:42we'll see kind of various levels of success.
03:45Because maybe they think one of those guys is going to emerge.
03:48To me, in a more pro-style offense, Burks has the biggest opportunity to emerge
03:53because he's built like an actual, like somebody to line up on the opposite side
03:58of the field as Terry.
03:59Maybe Luke is as well.
04:01But Lane projects more as a slot guy.
04:04Maybe there's more of an opportunity for Lane there.
04:08So you've got to kind of juggle what you think those three guys are.
04:11And they should be healthy, right?
04:14Yep.
04:15Both Luke and Lane, who were put on IR, said at the end of the year,
04:18yeah, we were good.
04:19Burks dealt with nagging injuries but played the end of the season.
04:23But if you had to look at three options, and I'll open the phone lines on this.
04:28I'm going to ask you a question real quick, though.
04:29Sure.
04:30Deebo's not released.
04:32The draft comes up.
04:34Tate's sitting there.
04:35Are you waiting on Deebo or are you going with Tate?
04:37I think the moves they've made in free agency have eliminated the desperation for any one singular position.
04:47I'm just saying if you're sitting in that position, what do you think?
04:50If they're still messing with him, which means...
04:55I'm just saying Ayuk.
04:56Yeah, Ayuk.
04:56If Ayuk said it.
04:57Yeah, not Deebo Ayuk.
04:58And they're not giving you any...
05:00They're not helping you out.
05:01You've got to make a move eventually.
05:03Dude, I think even if...
05:05I think because they've addressed...
05:08I'm not going to say fixed.
05:09I think people are way too early to use the word fixed.
05:11They've addressed the desperation at pass rusher.
05:15Yeah.
05:16Gives them a lot more flexibility at seven.
05:18And I think in turn, that increases the percentage chance they're taking a receiver at seven regardless.
05:24If Tate's their guy, if Lemon's their guy, whoever they determine to be their guy,
05:28I think there's a real good chance it's receiver.
05:30I think from a roster construction standpoint, receiver still makes the most sense even if they sign Ayuk by then.
05:38Ayuk's going to be on a one-year prove-it deal.
05:40That's the reality.
05:41Now, it may get announced as a six-year, $250 million deal, but that is fake.
05:47There will be guaranteed money on one year of that deal.
05:50Yeah.
05:50And it's probably not going to be a lot of guarantees.
05:51It's going to be a ton of incentives.
05:53Terry has guaranteed money next year, not after that.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Like, you need a...
05:58Whether he's a two-two start, but from a roster construction point,
06:03the receiver position's incredibly expensive if you're paying for it.
06:06Yeah.
06:06You draft a kid at seven, or maybe you trade to ten, which I don't think is that likely,
06:11but just for the talking point.
06:13Like, from a roster construction standpoint, you get five years of control on a wideout.
06:17Totally.
06:17Like, that should be kind of the one seed of targets.
06:22It doesn't mean they have to do it.
06:23What you're saying is what most people don't pay attention to.
06:28You're not building a team for this year, per se, when it comes to all the money.
06:32You are trying to make sure in four or five years everything is starting to fit as people leave and
06:38other people are coming in.
06:39And you've got to do that.
06:40Siri is texting everything you just said.
06:42No.
06:43She's not texting.
06:44She's just typing it.
06:45She hasn't texted yet.
06:47All right.
06:48So...
06:48It would have been going to Ryan Clare, so who cares?
06:50Who cares?
06:51I just tweeted this out at J.P. Finley NBCS.
06:54Commanders fans, what would you prefer?
06:57Option one, sign Jawan Jennings.
06:59Option two, bring back Debo.
07:02Option three, wait and see with Ayuk.
07:07Mark, that's the question for the phone lines.
07:09800-636-1067.
07:11Mark can answer that.
07:12He's a Commanders fan sitting right here.
07:15800-636-1067.
07:18Right now, we've had a bunch of folks have voted in five minutes.
07:22We've got almost 300 votes in five minutes.
07:2441% of fans say wait and see with Ayuk.
07:2835% of fans say sign Jawan Jennings and another 24, bring back Debo.
07:33I don't think whatever...
07:36A Jawan Jennings contract at this point in free agency could have real guaranteed money on a second year of
07:43it.
07:44But, like, the leverage has tilted to the teams at this point.
07:49The leverage for free agents was significant last week.
07:52Yo, I got a market.
07:53I'm talking to these guys, these guys.
07:54I got all these options.
07:56That is now tilted to the teams.
07:57So, if Washington was to sign Jennings, again, maybe they give him a real two-year deal with real money
08:04for next year.
08:04But that's not going to be a long-term thing.
08:06No.
08:06I don't think any of those three moves would preclude drafting a receiver at seven.
08:12Period.
08:13Oh, I'm with that.
08:14So, of those three, what would you be most interested in?
08:18You say sign Jennings, wait on Ayuk, or bring back Debo.
08:21So, I'm thinking about Jennings or Debo at this point because I just feel I don't think you have to
08:28wait on nobody.
08:30Especially a person that hadn't played in about a year and a half.
08:34So, and as I look at Jennings and Debo, I like Debo.
08:41At this point, I'll probably go with that.
08:45So, you vote Debo.
08:47I will look at my man, Stallion.
08:52Given three options.
08:54Barash, Stallion up, please.
08:56Given three options.
08:58Sign Jawan Jennings.
09:00Bring back Debo.
09:01Wait and see what happens with Ayuk.
09:03Because I do think if Ayuk gets released, Washington is the most likely spot.
09:07Yeah.
09:07But I think it's a little naive.
09:10People always talk about, oh, you know, Adam Peters was in San Francisco.
09:14There are people that were with San Francisco all over the NFL.
09:17Robert Sala just took over in Tennessee.
09:19They've revamped the whole thing.
09:20There are people with San Francisco ties all over the NFL.
09:23And I just wonder, we get to Saturday of draft day, and some team's sitting there with three sixth-round
09:28picks.
09:29And they're like, you're telling me I could use this and get Brandon Ayuk and roll the dice?
09:33It is not a lock that doesn't happen.
09:35Yeah.
09:36You can wait.
09:37You can wait for him.
09:40And right in the middle, somebody can pull a rug from under you.
09:43Right.
09:44So my thing is, if it's somebody else that's probably there, that may be the move to make.
09:50Stallion, where are you at?
09:51I'd sign Jawan Jennings, like, right now.
09:53Because, again, like, you're waiting for Brandon Ayuk.
09:56It could be after the draft.
09:57Like, they're talking about releasing him post-June 1st.
10:00Like, we don't really know what's going to happen.
10:02And I think Jawan Jennings is going to help you from day one.
10:05He's a great blocker.
10:06I think he's someone who could adapt in the system.
10:08And I think that Jawan Jennings, honestly, is just less of a headache.
10:13Like, you know what you're going to get from him.
10:15He gives good wide receiver to production.
10:17And, again, you just need someone who's going to produce.
10:21And then also, just kind of angle it here.
10:23You can help yourself in the draft.
10:25Like, you don't have to go out and get a wide receiver to the pick number seven.
10:30Like, you could have the pick of the litter and the top guy available.
10:33So, I think if you go get Jawan Jennings, it helps you probably today better than maybe waiting for a
10:39Brandon Ayuk.
10:41I mean, Jennings is a good, capable two receiver, right?
10:46And I think, could Lane, Luke, or Burks be that?
10:54Maybe.
10:55Jennings has done it.
10:56Like, he's demonstrated that ability in the NFL.
11:00Let's say he was a seven-round pick who's one of the top receivers in the free agency market.
11:06He's done a lot.
11:07Right.
11:08And he's done more than they thought he was going to do.
11:12So, you know, we'll see.
