It may make the most sense for Washington to draft a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft, but which one?
Transcript
00:00But here's the thing.
00:01Whoever they draft is going to be somebody that they need
00:04because they still got a lot of needs.
00:05Like, do I want to see them go defense?
00:07Yes, I've been screaming it for months.
00:08But if they draft a wide receiver, they also need another wide receiver.
00:13So if it works out and it's a successful pick, then in the end, okay.
00:18For me, who they pick doesn't push it for me.
00:23Once they get him, he has every opportunity to be the best he can be.
00:26Because I know every year we go crazy somebody picks somebody.
00:30And then when they don't play well, we all call in and want to bash them
00:34and blame everybody.
00:35But you want them to pick that guy.
00:36And they pick him and then he's not good.
00:39My thing is once they land, they become what they thought they were going to be.
00:44If they do that, I'm cool.
00:46Don't make a difference to me who it all is.
00:49We need a lot of good football players.
00:51As long as it's a good football player, they've got needs at wide receiver.
00:54That's what my mind is.
00:55Yeah, and that's really – but we do know that obviously – I mean, listen.
00:58Brandon Iyuk, they're not going to sit around and just wait for him
01:01and think that that's going to fill their spot.
01:02There's a million questions around Brandon Iyuk.
01:04Also, he still plays for the 49ers at this point.
01:06But the commanders have been linked to Carnell Tate.
01:09And I know I've talked to a couple people that also say, yeah,
01:13that they love Carnell Tate there.
01:16They love Carnell Tate.
01:17There's the Ohio State connection.
01:18There's the Terry McLaurin connection that we couldn't wear 17.
01:21That would be a whole thing on top of that.
01:22But Peter Schrager does agree that Carnell Tate is very, very high on their list.
01:30Commanders, my latest intel is I've heard Carnell Tate is their guy.
01:34Again, it's a good change.
01:36Carnell Tate could be sitting there at seven.
01:38And then you have your reliable wide receiver.
01:41You have another Ohio State guy.
01:42You pair with Terry McLaurin and you go to work.
01:45It makes sense, right?
01:47I mean.
01:47Hey, man.
01:48I know how the league is set up right now.
01:50And everything is catered to the receivers.
01:54And if he has anything like Terry, I'll take him.
01:59I'll go with that pedigree.
02:00Because this, I know everybody's, remember, if you think back, he was drafted.
02:06And they say he was going to be, oh, he's a top special teams player in the draft.
02:10Well, hell, look what he became.
02:12And if he has a connect with them already, as Carnell Tate stated, he and Terry, that
02:17whole receiver core that came from Ohio State, they take care of each other.
02:23If I can see him get to where Terry is and do the things here we're doing, I wouldn't mind
02:29it.
02:29But there's also, and I know people don't want to think about this, but Terry McLaurin's
02:33not going to be with this team forever.
02:36And it may only be a year or two more.
02:37I mean, it doesn't.
02:38So you've got to start thinking about what that looks like.
02:41So you draft Carnell Tate.
02:43Here's what happens.
02:44He's got to be, eventually you're looking at him as like, you're going to step in for
02:48Terry one day.
02:49That's the idea of you're drafting a wide receiver this high.
02:52But it also doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be Carnell Tate.
02:54Though, yes, Carnell Tate, this team loves him.
02:57It's no secret at this point.
02:58But there are also a couple of wild cards that are out there, especially this one that
03:02Peter Schrager had for the Commanders, too.
03:04The wild card for the Commanders would be David Blau, the new offensive coordinator.
03:09And based on how the first six picks go, there's a very strong possibility that Carnell Tate
03:15is not on the board anymore.
03:17And you go back to David Blau when he played with the Detroit Lions and who his guy was,
03:22or a guy that he watched, or a guy that he knows well.
03:25And it's Amon Ross St. Brown.
03:27Who is the Amon Ross St. Brown avatar in this draft?
03:32It's the Blitnikoff winner, Makai Lemon, out of USC.
03:36So two names for the Commanders that I would just put on your, put in the back of your mind
03:42on this one.
03:43Um, Carnell Tate, if he's there.
03:45And then don't be shocked if it's Makai Lemon.
03:48We know nothing, bitch.
03:50A David Blau pick.
03:51That's what we're doing.
03:53That's where we're going.
03:54Um, that would be a big swing.
03:57We know nothing.
03:58I mean, I mean, even Peter Schrager's like, they like him.
04:00They also like him.
04:01Maybe Carnell Tate.
04:02Maybe Makai Lemon.
04:03Because David Blau was in Detroit, they're taking Makai Lemon.
04:09That's the mindset.
04:10You're going smaller.
04:11He's only about 5'11 versus 6'2 for Carnell Tate.
04:14They could use a bigger receiver.
04:15That, to me, is a stretch.
04:17What?
04:17Makai Lemon?
04:18They're taking him just because of the connection with Omar.
04:21Well, if he's kind of mimicking some of that offense they had in Detroit,
04:24and you want to find someone that could fit the Amon Ross St. Brown mold,
04:28that might be your guy.
04:29But we also got to be careful with player comparisons.
04:31We do this a lot, and then guys don't live up to those expectations.
04:33That's a whole other thing, too.
04:35Omar St. Brown is, for what he's doing, he was a third-round pick,
04:38I think he was, second, third-round?
04:39Third.
04:40Fourth, right?
04:41Yeah, fourth.
04:42Fourth-round pick.
04:43He's just better than what people thought.
04:46Yeah.
04:46You know, my whole thing is, will these guys continue once they're drafted
04:53like Omar St. Brown has done?
04:55See, a lot of people get drafted and think they've arrived.
04:58But they shut down their motivation or their determination.
05:04You got to make sure that guy is going to love this thing.
05:08Because if that dude has the ticker inside of him like Omar,
05:11I can see.
05:13I'll go for it.
05:14But if he doesn't, then we're wasting our time comparing him.
05:18I mean, how many times have we seen first-round receivers not pan out in the NFL?
05:22I've seen a lot of them.
05:23In all positions to me.
05:24Yeah, that's a position a lot, though, that does tend to flame out.
05:28Where, again, you can find somebody like a Terry McLaurin
05:30or an Amon Ross St. Brown in the third or the fourth round.
05:32I mean, if you look at this draft, too, there's a lot of wide receivers.
05:36And there's a lot of potential wide receiver talent
05:38that could fall to the back end of the first or into the second round.
05:42Now, again, that doesn't affect the commanders at this moment
05:44because they don't have a pick in late first or in the second round at all.
05:47But this goes back to, again, why I'd love to see them get a second round pick
05:52and trade back a few spots.
05:53Now, again, it's easier said than done.
05:55Where are you going to trade?
05:56But if the Dolphins wanted to trade up and you got pick 11 and 43,
05:59you probably wouldn't get their 30th pick for four picks up.
06:02Maybe.
06:03I know this makes people sick.
06:04But let me ask you this.
06:05If the Cowboys come calling and offer you 12 and 20 for pick seven
06:10and you can draft a defensive player and a wide receiver with 12 and 20,
06:14you making a trade with the Cowboys?
06:15Yeah.
06:16Yeah, see?
06:16Who cares?
06:17I don't care that it's the Cowboys in the draft.
06:18My thing is you make those picks because you have a plan to better your team.
06:23It doesn't make a damn difference who you're picking it with.
06:25Because if you're moving back, you don't want to buy whoever they come and get anyway.
06:29Wouldn't it be such a Cowboys pick to trade up for Jeremiah Love at seven
06:32if he's available?
06:33Yeah, it would be.
06:33Oh, you know, Beamish, we definitely want to get ourselves a nice running back.
06:37I don't want Dak to have to throw the ball so much.
06:41We're going to get ourselves a running back,
06:43and it's going to be a glorious pick for us.
06:45Yeah, I mean, this is, you know, it's tough.
06:47You're going to get glory hole then, boy.
06:49I'm going to make some glory hole.
06:50God, that will just live on forever.
06:51You know when you say that and some people don't remember him saying that?
06:54They're like, do you know what that means?
06:54I'm like, do you know what Jarrah said?
06:56This is what this is all about, okay?
06:57You need to remember that's what it is.
06:59Yeah, but I mean.
07:00Yeah, it means something about oil.
07:01It's about oil.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Yeah.
07:02I've watched Land, man.
07:03I know all about oil now, you know?
07:05It's a great show, by the way.
07:06Great show.
07:07You know, but this is why, because they have so many needs,
07:11it would be great to see them add that second-round pick.
07:14Now, I would never take back the Laramie Tunsil trade at all.
07:17I mean, that's one of the best left tackles in the NFL,
07:19especially now seeing Trent Williams sign another extension with the 49ers.
07:22It's like, good thing they found somebody else,
07:24because you let that guy.
07:25Yeah, yeah.
07:26And by the way, let me say this about Trent Williams.
07:28That man hustles like Kirk Cousins.
07:30They get big deals out of the, you're just like, oh, another?
07:33How does this keep happening for them?
07:35Good for him.
07:36I'll tell you, those two agents right there, boy, they doing it.
07:38They are.
07:39They should be getting more players.
07:41They are.
07:41But, yeah, I mean, if the commanders had a chance to get a defensive player
07:45and a wide receiver with, you know, either two first-round picks
07:49or a first and a second, I mean, that's where trading back is really valuable.
07:53But they're not going to have that idea until they actually see how the draft looks.
07:56And, look, what's also not even being talked about is a team trading up above them, too.
08:01Like, what if somebody trades up and a bunch of defensive players are taken off the board
08:05where you don't have Sonny Stiles, Caleb Downs, or David Bailey or Arvel Reese?
08:09Like, let's say they're all off the board.
08:10There's a possibility that that happens.
08:12At that point, I'm going wide receiver.
08:15Like, because you've gotten the defensive players that would make the most impact.
08:18I'm going wide receiver where I'm trading back.
08:20See, there's this show called First 48.
08:25They need to have the last 48 when they come down to the draft.
08:29Like, we talk about all this stuff when they follow the teams around,
08:32what do they call it, in preseason and all.
08:35What's the?
08:36Oh, you're talking about hard knocks?
08:37Hard knocks.
08:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:38Following these GMs in these last two days, that would be must-watch TV.
08:44That actually would be more interesting.
08:46Because we will find out how much BS really happens.
08:48Yep, yep.
08:49You know, just take out some of the words they're discussing, but just look at the amount
08:52of calls and all this.
08:54That right there, I'll watch that.
08:56I actually wouldn't be surprised if they did that at some point, had an NFL draft hard
08:59knocks, and you had to follow certain teams.
09:01I would actually rather have that than training camp.
09:03I feel like we've seen it all in the training camp, even in the off-season one.
09:07But a draft-specific, because that's where the most moving parts are.
09:10That's where you're in the war room.
09:11Again, the NFL could just tell teams, we're doing this, and they would do it.
09:15But no teams would actually want any of that, because you can then look back on it.
09:19It's like Cliff Kingsbury, when they were drafting Ben Sinnott, and he's like, oh, yeah,
09:22I could use him.
09:22And then they never used him.
09:23And you have all these revisionist history things.
09:26I saw something the other day.
09:27It was when Mike Vrabel was with the Titans, and they traded A.J. Brown.
09:33And you see his reaction.
09:35Coaches and GMs don't want that stuff out there, so you can look back on.
09:38They don't want that footage out there.
09:39They want everything out there about players.
09:41We do.
09:41I want it.
09:42I want to see it.
09:42I think they should be as exposed as they make the players.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Why they got to be protected?
09:48Well, you know, they're in charge.
09:50It's like politicians.
09:51I don't care.
09:51It's like politicians, B-Mitch.
09:53They protect themselves.
09:53The powers are where they protect themselves.
09:54They think they're part of the plan, but look, let me see you.
09:57Let me see you squirm a little bit.
09:59Listen, I'm all for it.
10:00You and I are on the same page.
10:01I'd love to see a hard knocks around the draft.
