Do you still believe that Steve Yzerman will get it right with the Red Wings?
Transcript
00:00I think we agree on one thing, and that is that I can't believe Eisenman's still here now that he
00:05is.
00:06What's interesting is he's rooting it for it to burn.
00:09He wants it to burn.
00:12I want there to be some sort of career epiphany where he turns this thing around.
00:19And as unlikely as that may be, that's what I'm rooting for.
00:25Previous caller wants it to burn.
00:27Now, again, I always like to say everybody's feelings is authentic to them.
00:32It's just a different way of looking at it.
00:37I think Eisenman, as a GM, when I think about what he did on Friday, it feels a little bit
00:43like he made a trade that I like, even though the trade's an indictment of his own draft pick.
00:51I like the trade, and I like the player they took, at least the scouting report.
00:55I can't say I've ever seen J.P. hurl, but play, okay?
01:01But the scouting report on him is that this is a guy that, if he makes it, he's going to
01:08be a great offensive threat.
01:11Very high-end offensive.
01:13Which feels like it's the opposite of what he has taken.
01:18My clock has hit zero, but I'm still rooting for Steve Eisenman to be successful.
01:25Previous caller wants it to burn.
01:26I don't want to make bad moves.
01:29I don't want to go out and pitch free agents and have the free agents say, absolutely not.
01:34I don't want to be there.
01:35Or try to make a trade for somebody and that player say, absolutely not.
01:39I'm not going there.
01:39I don't want that.
01:41I want those players to come here, you know?
01:44And if the team ends up failing, then they end up failing and you move on.
01:48You'll have to move on from Eisenman.
01:50If they don't make the playoffs this upcoming season, it's really hard to see a world where he's able to
01:55come back.
01:56Because there's been so much talk from fans and media and everybody else that this thing is not working.
02:04That if you hang another year on it, I mean, nothing ages well when you're losing.
02:08Skepticism is well-earned.
02:09I mean, it's totally deserved at this point.
02:12And, you know, they've got to dig themselves out of the hole.
02:15He has to, you know, to save his job, players have to show that they've developed.
02:21This week, they've got the developmental camp going on, right?
02:25And they've got players from basically like the last three draft classes are going to be taking part in this.
02:30Not all of them, but some of them.
02:32We need to see that some of these guys are taking a big step from one year to the next.
02:37You know, Carter Bear is going to – I feel like that's a player that – that's an Eisenman legacy
02:43type player.
02:44He has to be a guy that is challenging to make the roster this upcoming season and hopefully is a
02:52fixture on it in the 27-28 season.
02:54Based upon what you said at the end of last hour and the beginning of this hour, I think you
03:00put more culpability on the players than I do.
03:04I also want to make sure that people understand absolutely Eisenman deserves some blame.
03:09I'm just saying that I think there's blame that goes both ways.
03:11And, in fact, in this situation, I think it is kind of 50-50 because the players were playing great
03:17and then they weren't.
03:19What happened?
03:20It's not because the – it's not because Steve Eisenman didn't make a trade.
03:23It's because the players started to falter.
03:25Why?
03:26But you say it's up to the players to show that they are developing.
03:30It's up to the organization to take players that can develop, but it's up to the organization to develop them
03:35themselves.
03:35Sure, but developing players in the minors is one thing.
03:39Players on the active roster, when you're winning games in January and February and then you lose everything in March
03:46and April, what happened?
03:48And it happens every year and there might be something about this.
03:52Yeah, it is.
03:54Some of it's on the coaching to me.
03:56Some of it's on – again, I go back to Eisenman to have the right kind of lineup that when
04:01the games mean the most,
04:02that he can field a team that's ready for playoff-style hockey that you have to play in March sometimes
04:09just to get in and beyond.
04:11And they don't.
04:12And I – okay, who put that roster of players together?
04:18Yeah, but, I mean, it's also – it's reflective on the players for not continuing.
04:21But anyway –
04:22Like I said, we have a different – as far as the pie is concerned, you have a bigger piece
04:28of pie on the players than I do.
04:30I guess.
04:31For me, I think that the pie is pretty equally doled out there.
04:34With that said, I still hope that Eisenman and the staff – I'm not rooting for it to burn.
04:42Well, I would say maybe it's the players weren't that good to start with.
04:45They're playing over their heads.
04:47And it's the organization, the coach or the GM, the president to know that, hey, we need help because these
04:52guys aren't actually as good as their record.
04:54Like that's what – that's having the foresight, you know, to see, hey, we should make a move.
04:58Maybe Dylan Larkin, that's what he meant a couple years ago when he was like, yeah, I'm disappointed we didn't
05:02make a move because he didn't say it out loud.
05:04But like in his mind, I was like, these guys ain't that good.
05:06We aren't good enough.
05:07We're not good enough, dude.
05:08Dude, we're lucky to be where we are.
05:10We need help.
05:11248-539-9797.
05:13The other big story today that everybody is looking at is Malik Beasley, who was one of two NBA players
05:20today indicted on federal charges of point shaving and manipulating player props.
05:26Look, it answers a question as to why the Red Wings – or the Red Wings – the Pistons weren't
05:32in heavy pursuit of him and always seemed to shoot it down.
05:36There's a really high probability that they were aware of what might be about to go down.
05:43And at least for people who called our show or texted the show a lot about why not Beasley, why
05:49not Beasley, why not Beasley, this may answer the reason as to why.
05:52And the New York Post reported today it was to make up for gambling debts that he had accrued over
05:59the years.
05:59And there's text messages that were found that he is – people are talking about his performance late in games
06:07to hit overs, to hit unders.
06:11Man, it's sad.
06:13It's led to a greater conversation about sports gambling because Malik Beasley deserves his day in court.
06:18We're not going to try and convict him on the air.
06:20But a greater conversation about gambling in sports.
06:25And Adam Silver and the NBA appear to have a bigger problem than other leagues.
06:31I'm not saying those leagues don't have problems.
06:34But as far as the cases that we have seen on this front, man, there is a disturbing trend going
06:43on with more and more NBA players.
06:45And it's probably the easiest sport to manipulate something.
06:50You start thinking about the other sports if you're trying to manipulate.
06:53I mean, I guess you could, as a baseball player, go up there and strike out four times.
06:57Well, yeah, I suppose that.
07:00But in basketball, you have control over the game at any given time because the ball's in your hands.
07:06And it happens a lot.
07:08And some players, more than others, will have control over there.
07:12248-539-9797.
07:15Mondays also mean Champ and Jump.
07:16Get your Champ and Jump votes in.
07:19My Champ at a Weekend is the Canadian soccer team.
07:22Congratulations to our Canadian friends listening across the border.
07:25Extra time, 92nd minute, 0-0 game.
07:27With South Africa in the first round of the knockout bracket for the World Cup.
07:32Canada gets a win.
07:34Their first knockout win in World Cup history.
07:36Gator, your Champ at a Weekend is?
07:38It was the Tigers starting pitching.
07:40I thought that that was most impressive.
07:42They had five starters to go out there.
07:46Sorry, not five starters.
07:47The four starters against Houston.
07:49They only gave up five earned runs total in 24 innings pitched.
07:53That's really good starting pitching.
07:55My Champ at a Weekend is the Tiger bullpen.
07:58They were handed leads in both the Saturday and Sunday game and blew them both.
08:02My Champ is the NHL draft, the way it was presented.
08:05I just wish that they'd go back to how it was.
08:08I loved when you had all the teams on the floor of an arena or an event center, wherever you
08:13were at.
08:13I thought it was much more fun, upbeat.
08:16I liked more analysis.
08:19I didn't like the way that they modeled the interviews with the players and their families like the NBA did.
08:27I thought that was a huge misstep by the NBA and the NHL fell into the same trap.
08:31So, 248-539-9797, let's go to Jordan in Lansing.
08:36You're on 97.1.
08:37Hello, Jordan.
08:39Hey, what's up?
08:40You're going to have to take us off speaker, Jordan.
08:43It's super loud, and we're going to have problems hearing you if you don't.
08:46How's that?
08:47Much better.
08:49All right, cool.
08:50So, my question is, with the current landscape of the Atlantic Division, you know, Buffalo's taking the next step.
08:57Montreal's going to be competitive for the next, you know, decade with the contracts that they've signed.
09:01Do you think the Red Wings should kind of retool around this current core with Raymond, Sider?
09:07You know, you have Gibson.
09:07He's only 31.
09:08He's going to be under contract for a few years.
09:10You know, Coastal's gone now.
09:12With Augustine and Pazza coming up, do you think they should just kind of retool around this core and ship
09:17off Larkin into Brinkett,
09:18or do you think he should strip it out from the bottom up?
09:20Well, what do you want to see happen?
09:23Honestly, I think you cannot send Larkin back into that locker room with a C.
09:27I feel like being a hockey captain means more than a lot of the majority of the core four sports.
09:33So, I think he has to be gone before training camp.
09:36But Eizerman is not going to take a deal that's not worth taking.
09:40So, the only thing I want to say is Gibson's only under contract for one more year.
09:45He'll be 33, actually, in July.
09:46Yeah, but Jordan, as far as, I thought the chances all along of Eizerman getting a deal,
09:53a deal that we were all on, that we're, whoa, that's a good return with this player.
10:00I thought that there was a 20% chance that he wouldn't be able to deal him.
10:05Now, I think there's a 40% chance that he won't be able to deal him.
10:08Now, the draft is passed.
10:09I brought that up in the office today.
10:11Kang said, you're high on both.
10:12And I said, got it.
10:13Yep, I am.
10:1520% was higher than most.
10:17And now, I'm sure 40% is higher than most.
10:20There will have to be some real mea culpas.
10:23But Steve Eizerman cannot trade him for less than market value.
10:28He just can't.
10:28Yeah, I think with free agency starting on Wednesday,
10:33I think that it puts a new time limit on things to get something done quickly
10:37because, as you know, it's a bad year for free agents.
10:41It just is.
10:42Dylan Larkin is the hottest name out there right now
10:45because of him being signed to a five-year...
10:49He still has five years left on his deal that pays him
10:52a very reasonable eight-point-something million dollars.
10:55It's also great for the team that gets him
10:57because the actual price you're paying isn't anywhere near that
11:00because his contract was front-loaded.
11:02That's what the number is against the cap.
11:04The actual dollars, you're not putting forth as much.
11:07He has great value in this.
11:10You can talk about Jason Robertson, who is absolutely a better player,
11:13but Robertson's going to come with not only players you have to give up,
11:17but it's also going to come with a monster contract
11:19somewhere north of $13 million a year to acquire him.
11:23There might be some other big names like Zach Wierenski that's out there,
11:26but that's going to be awfully tough to facilitate
11:30because he's only got two years left on his deal.
11:32The five years makes it completely palatable to take it on
11:37and give up big-time resources to make it happen.
11:40I think the trade will happen, but the reason I think it's taken a long time
11:44is because it's more complicated because you're going to have to work
11:47other teams into it, is just my gut feeling.
11:50I don't know if any one team that has those assets to get it done
11:55would be a team that Dylan Larkin would agree to going to in the first place.
12:00So you're going to have to find that third team.
12:02Let's get into the numbers being floated out there
12:05regarding Jalen Duren's contract offer.
12:07At 1220, you're on 97.1.
12:09Let's get into the numbers.
