It is with a heavy heart that 97.1 The Ticket shares the news that Kenny Kott, a valued and beloved member of The Valenti Show with Rico, has passed away due to medical complications.
Transcript
00:00Yeah, we're all, it's equal parts shock and also just heartbreak
00:03because you guys who listen to the show, you understand how we run things.
00:08And it's, we don't have a separation of church and state, you know,
00:12behind the glass and not.
00:13Like, that's just how I've always viewed radio.
00:17I grew up listening to Howard Stern and, you know, you use your cast members
00:21and you have a good time.
00:22And Kenny had really grown into something that was, it was fun.
00:27And he was finally getting it.
00:29And David, you know, who had the day off today but was kind enough
00:33to come in for the first hour, you know, David and Kenny sit three feet
00:37from each other, 25 hours a week.
00:42You form a relationship that's unique.
00:46And TJ Lang called in an hour one and it's, dude,
00:50you're not always going to love your teammates.
00:51You're going to battle, but they're your teammates.
00:53And, like, you just get after it.
00:55And that's kind of what this is.
00:57And there are similar aspects of that with other jobs.
01:00It's just, it won't be the same.
01:03And I have no idea what we're going to do.
01:05And I don't even want to think about it.
01:07I'm not even close to being at that point to think about it.
01:09You know, I said it to you today.
01:11Like, and I, it's, it's, I'm not being, I'm not being, like, rude or, like, I, when I say
01:18this, understand why I'm saying it is I don't want to talk about it because grief is not
01:23supposed to be broadcast.
01:24Like, I just want to not talk about it, but I know we have to.
01:29And out of respect to Kenny's family and Kenny and his memory, we have to be the ones
01:34to deliver it.
01:35But I just, yeah, part of me is, like, I'd rather just go quiet because that's how I
01:40am.
01:40It's really hard.
01:42No, just pre-show today was just weird and different.
01:46And, yeah, I was sitting there talking to Evan and said something to you.
01:49And you're like, yeah, I'm not under Mike Ryan said, but you made a great point.
01:53But honestly, I don't care about that right now.
01:56Yeah, no, and I wasn't being a richard to you.
01:58No, no, and I realize.
01:59I get it.
02:00I understand.
02:00There's an absurdity in going from talking about, you know, a friend and coworker and
02:05a member of your team that you lost, and then, oh, by the way, Iserman's garbage.
02:09Like, there's something that's obscene about that juxtaposition.
02:13And yet, I know that's what we need to do.
02:16And I will get there.
02:18I just want to make sure the people that have been kind enough to call in, you know, we take
02:22those calls, and you know what I'm saying?
02:25No, no, and I get it, Mike.
02:26And I think that, ironically enough, I think maybe Kenny left us with a layup for the easier
02:32transition because there is hockey talk.
02:35There is Iserman talk.
02:36There is Larkin talk.
02:37So, you know what?
02:39It's kind of what we would be talking about if Kenny was here.
02:42I wish he was here.
02:43And that's the hard part.
02:44Yeah.
02:45You know, even the last few weeks, and he was battling, and I guess it's just like without
02:50him here the last almost month, while it was different, there was always an expectation
02:56of he'll be back.
02:57And you just, you know, people go through things, and they, you know, medical events
03:01happen, and life is unpredictable.
03:02And it just, it's so different knowing he won't be.
03:10Yeah.
03:13That's the sad reality.
03:16That's what, that's what really hits you in the face.
03:19And that's, it's, it's tough, man.
03:22It's really hard.
03:23And it's hard because you're sitting here, and it's like, Rico, you and I talk all the
03:27time.
03:27But like, when things happen in life, you get a blessing of a level of like privacy where
03:33you handle them in your private life.
03:35Like, this is, you're on stage for something that is not meant to be on stage.
03:40You know what I mean?
03:41And that's, that's the tough part.
03:43And it's, it's just one of those things.
03:46You just, this is what we do.
03:48So let's get to some of the calls.
03:50I want to make sure we round those calls out.
03:52People have been kind enough to, to, they have something to say about Kenny.
03:55We'll do that.
03:57And then it'll be a totally unnatural, maybe borderline obscene transition into sports talk
04:03where I'll do, I'll do the best I can for you guys.
04:06But yeah, no offense, Iserman or Scott Harris, none of that matters.
04:11It's not real.
04:13It's just not, none of it's real.
04:15No.
04:15We'll go to the people.
04:16We'll go to John 97.
04:18One, John, what's going on?
04:20Hey, what's up, man?
04:22You know, I don't call in a lot.
04:24I do listen all the time though.
04:27And I'm not really good with words.
04:29So just bear with me with what I'm trying to say.
04:31Right.
04:31Of course.
04:32So, you know, you guys broke this news.
04:35It sucks.
04:37And I know the other shows don't have any obligation to do it.
04:41But like, you know, we're not celebrating, we're not mourning his death.
04:45You know, we're celebrating his life and the contributions he gave to your guys' show.
04:50Love the dude.
04:51Met him a couple of times.
04:53Uh, bought him a couple of beers one time.
04:56He was just a great guy, man.
04:58I miss Kenny.
04:59I think the last time I did talk to him was on a Saturday show.
05:04It was him and Stoney doing like blind rankings.
05:07And I had called the day prior and he let me on anyway.
05:10And I told him, you know, thank you, man.
05:11Love you.
05:12And those were the last words I said to him.
05:15I was wondering where Kenny was, but I didn't want to ask every, you know, when I call.
05:21And, uh, yeah, it sucks, man.
05:23And what really sucks is he's not going to be able to see this team, the Red Wings, win the
05:29Stanley Cup, you know, if they ever do.
05:32Yeah, I was going to say.
05:33You know, I know he's a big hockey guy.
05:35He's never going to see them win.
05:36It sucks, man.
05:38There's a, it's, you know, and John, I, believe me, I get the sentiment.
05:42I'm, I'm just far sadder about the other things he's not going to get to see or do or experience.
05:48Like, I, I just perspective changes.
05:51I, I, I don't know if it's like a, I mean, I'm over the midway point.
05:55It's just midlife crisis of like, you view things differently.
05:58Like, I just, it hits me so hard because he's the same age as one of my sisters.
06:02And you're just, it's unthinkable because like, I always tell her like, like young people like, oh, I'm falling behind
06:09or I'm not doing good enough.
06:10And I'm like, look, man, life doesn't start till 30.
06:12You haven't even started.
06:14Like they haven't even opened the gates yet.
06:17And that's the same principle with Kenny as it was just starting.
06:21And God, just, that's why it hits me even harder.
06:26It's just that 30 is, dude, you're a baby.
06:31It's the truth, man.
06:33So I hear you about the Red Wings, but believe me, I'm far sadder about other stuff.
06:37Yeah, but you got to remember our listeners, they know Kenny is, I know, I know, I know.
06:42Believe me.
06:43And it's just funny because I'm like, I tell you this all the time.
06:47Like, Mike, there's so much more that you're going to experience.
06:50Yeah.
06:51Let's go to Dom 97.
06:53One Dom.
06:54How you doing?
06:56Hey, what's up guys?
06:58Mike Rico.
06:58Hey, Dom.
07:01Yeah, man.
07:04This news absolutely sucks, man.
07:06Mike, I've been listening to your show for over a decade now.
07:11I don't think there's ever been a time I've been more sad listening to your show.
07:16I just want to lay out a couple points.
07:18I remember Clear's Day when Kenny joined the program.
07:23And, you know, over time, you can just kind of just hear his confidence growing by the show.
07:32And, you know, he started leaning more into the jokes.
07:38Yeah.
07:38No matter how absurd they were.
07:42But, you know, and like you said, Mike, it's not, you know, he had so much more to live for.
07:49And you could just see the progression in Kenny almost every time you listen to the show.
07:56And just from afar, man, like I was just so rooting for people.
08:01And you root for people like that in general.
08:03But, you know, TJ made a point earlier how, you know, you guys have this locker room type vibe, which
08:09is, you know, very obvious.
08:11If you just, you know, if you're a fan of the show and listen to you guys, that's clearly evident.
08:18But from a listener standpoint, you guys are like those, you know, group of guys at the bar that you
08:24see every week.
08:25Don't necessarily hang out outside of the bar.
08:28But when you see each other, you know, it's always good conversation, good laughs.
08:32And, you know, I like to, you know, the parallel for that is, you know, with you guys.
08:38And it's like you're losing that guy at the bar that you're not going to see anymore.
08:43And it's just super unfortunate.
08:45And, you know, when I heard Kenny for the first time on Saturdays with Stoney, first of all, I thought
08:51that was just, you know, that's just an outstanding pairing those two right there.
08:55But just listening to him and just seeing him and listening to him round into form, Mike, like you said,
09:02he had all the potential in the world.
09:05And the kid really just he didn't know how good he was going to be.
09:10And I'm so glad that you brought up the point that you believed in him so much and you just
09:16kept pushing him and pushing him and pushing him.
09:18He didn't always like it.
09:20But, yeah, Dom, that was the whole thing is if I see somebody's got it, I'll be damned if you're
09:25not going to see it through.
09:26And it's just I wish there was more time because he was.
09:30I mean, they didn't put him on Saturdays by accident.
09:33You know, it's a process.
09:35Well, 100 percent, man.
09:37And I'll just wrap it up with this.
09:39You know, whether, you know, from his drops to you guys busting his balls about, you know, him being a
09:45cold cut extraordinaire, you know, possum stew, all that, all the stuff that Kenny brought to the table.
09:52You know, it's going to be just severely missed.
09:55His hockey knowledge and his hockey acumen, you know, is it going to be severely missed?
10:00He just brought such a different, you know, vibe and just a different type of energy to the show.
10:06And that's not something you guys are going to replace.
10:09No.
10:09It's just something you guys are going to cherish going forward.
10:12And I just want to send my credulences and, you know, all the best to you guys, 97.1, his
10:20family, his friends, girlfriend, anyone who had any interaction with Kenny Cott.
10:24I wish I had the pleasure of meeting the guy.
10:26But, you know, we've lost a good one today, boys, and we've just got to take it day by day
10:31at this point.
10:32Dom, appreciate it.
10:33Appreciate it, Dom.
10:34Very nice of you.
10:35All right.
10:36So I guess we'll try to do what we talked about.
10:40We'll try to switch gears and provide people with some normal.
10:43And I don't know about you.
10:44I could use the escape.
10:46So that's what we're going to attempt to do.
10:49None.
10:49By the way, none of what we're talking about next means anything.
10:53Remember that.
10:54Okay.
10:54But we'll do it.
10:55So I'll let Rico spin the wheel.
10:58You pick.
11:00And I'll try to deliver the best I can.
11:0397.1.
11:04Oh,granate creed.
11:04You pick me up and lay a little bit better.
11:04You pick me up.
11:04Don't ask.
11:04But what I'd recommend.
11:04You pick me up.
11:04Don't ask me.
11:04I'm really sure.
11:04If you buy that in the middle, that'd be a big one day where you could like I'm going up.
