00:00You know, your journey, I wonder what you think of today's NFL when you see the amount of money that's
00:04being spread around to all the quarterbacks.
00:06And, you know, Doug, you mentioned James Harrison and, you know, James Harris, you gave me the ability to be
00:11able to talk to him, too, you know, about how you guys and the guys today are standing on your
00:16shoulders.
00:17What do you think of the quarterback position, especially the black quarterback position today?
00:23What how do you how do you look at that, Doug, knowing the journey that you went through was completely
00:28different than the journey that these men went through?
00:31Excuse me, guys. Look. Oh, good.
00:34Let me let me say this. You know, the way I look at this whole thing and I know the
00:38money is not nearby what it was when we played.
00:42But I look at it from a different time and era because, you know, guys like Jim Brown and people
00:47play before me, they didn't get paid either.
00:49But so I got to look at it from that way. You got to be you got to be thankful
00:53for these guys to be able to make that kind of money.
00:55That's why we went on strike a couple of years before that time to get them in that position.
01:00Now, it all depends on how they handle it, but it's good for me.
01:03You know, you talk about the black quarterback and I tell people all the time, you know, yeah, I'm real
01:09grateful for the young black quarterback.
01:11I want to see him succeed. I want to see him play. But I like the position of quarterback.
01:15You know, I like Jim Kelly when he coming out. I like Tom Brady. You know, I like Aaron Rodgers.
01:20I like quarterbacks. That's my thing. But for the black quarterbacks that are not, I'm rooting for them.
01:26You and I both understand this. When you think about society today and you got a black man in a
01:32position like that, it's hard not to root for him to make it.
01:35And to me, that's what it's all about, because at the end of the day, it only takes one blunder
01:40that they can put a guy in a position to never get an opportunity again.
01:44I'm just hoping that they all succeed.
01:47So you look at it, Duck, more in this light now. I mean, situations change.
01:53You know, decades change. People are getting better and people are understanding it better.
01:57You just look at it a little bit different from the journey that you went on.
02:00And you love the fact that, you know, these guys today are on a different path than you and Warren
02:05Moon and James Harris were on.
02:07So, again, the quarterback, you like the quarterback position right now in the league.
02:11You think it's in a good place?
02:14I do think it's in a good place.
02:16You know, I still think, you know, you got 32 teams.
02:19I don't know whether there's 32 quarterbacks in this league that probably should be starting, but I think they got
02:26a lot of good characters, a lot of young guys that are coming up and a lot of more that's
02:31coming on.
02:32It's just about James.
02:33You know, I'm going to go back to James Harris.
02:35We always talk. We talk every day.
02:37And the one thing he always said to me, and I understand where he's coming from, it all depends on
02:43who hands you put the quarterback into.
02:45You know, you can bring a quarterback in and he fell, and the reason why he fell might not be
02:51because his ability.
02:52It might be because he wasn't taught the right way to do it.
02:55I think it's important that you put the quarterback in good hands.
02:58You know, just like here today, I'm here in Washington.
03:01I certainly hope the quarterback is in good hands because my son is the quarterback coach.
03:06So, I'm hoping he's in great hands.
03:09You know, but at the end of the day, it all depends on who hands you put him in.
