In this Forecast Feed, AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno says Europe is sweltering in a historic heat wave with temperatures reaching triple digits. Next week, the U.S. will follow with a heat wave as well.
Transcript
00:00Well, we're going to be talking about dueling heatwaves, one historic heatwave in Europe,
00:07and we have another, and then we have the heatwave that's going to be unfolding across the Midwest and Mid
00:13-South as we head into next week.
00:15I want to show you what's going on, though, with our current heatwave.
00:18This is a historic heatwave in Europe.
00:25Let me go on this.
00:27There it is.
00:27All right, and when you look at the upper weather pattern, and I'm going to show it to you on
00:31the European,
00:32it's always the same with these heatwaves.
00:35You have a big upper high, right?
00:36It's centered over Paris right now or across northern France where they're going to have four straight days over 100
00:43degrees.
00:43They've already broken, by the way, their all-time June record in Paris.
00:49They were 104 on Wednesday.
00:52They were over 100 here this afternoon.
00:56London was at 93 degrees on Wednesday.
01:01They're doing that now on Thursday as well.
01:05So it's quite a heatwave, and a lot of these places do not have air conditioning.
01:09Keep in mind, the average high temperature in Paris, by the way, is 72, and the normal low is like
01:1453.
01:15So, I mean, we're talking about temperatures 30 degrees above historical averages here, and this is going to be a
01:21problem.
01:22I'll show you how it's going to be ending, though.
01:24We have a dip in the jet stream back in here that will be ending this heatwave from southwest to
01:32northeast over the coming days.
01:33And then we're going to be talking about this.
01:36This is what's coming to the United States as we head in the next week.
01:44The upper high here is going to be building as well.
01:46So when you look at the upper weather pattern, you'll notice different continents but the same general weather pattern.
01:55All right, let me show you what's going on in Europe first.
01:59It's nasty here.
02:00Let me show you the upper level pattern here.
02:02Let me go two box here.
02:04So you get to see me.
02:06There are worse things.
02:07All right, here it is.
02:09Here it is.
02:09This is Thursday morning, and you can see where that upper high is, right over the Netherlands, northern France, and
02:18that's where the core of the heat is.
02:20Here's the dip in the jet stream that is going to be changing things here.
02:25Let me show you the two-meter temperatures, and these are the highs.
02:28Look at this area.
02:29You start getting well in the 90s and over 100 degrees, right across, right underneath that upper high, right underneath
02:37it.
02:37Now that's here on Thursday, and let's go forward here.
02:41Watch this upper high.
02:43This trough will come east, and that's going to push the high back in the eastern Europe.
02:49Let's play this through.
02:51So this is later tonight, Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Friday evening.
02:57See the core of the high now shifting from France over Germany.
03:00It's also not as strong.
03:02Notice it's right.
03:05Look out.
03:05Boy, 588, 590.
03:07You didn't see it.
03:07It kind of opens up a little bit here.
03:09And then by the time we get in the Saturday morning, there's the upper high across Germany and across Poland.
03:16And that's where the core of the heat will be as we get in the Sunday, right?
03:21Watch moving forward here.
03:23Then the upper high starts to weaken.
03:24Then it goes over the Ukraine.
03:26Then eventually it comes south.
03:29You see that and starts to weaken by the middle part of next week.
03:34So, as a result, let me show you what's going to happen, for example, in Paris with temperatures moving forward
03:41here.
03:42Let me do there.
03:45There is our seven day for Paris over the next couple of days here.
03:51There it is.
03:51Let me, there we go.
03:52All right, so 100 degrees Friday, 100 degrees Saturday, right?
03:57And then there's the cooling that I talked about where, let me do that there.
04:04So, there's the cooling as we get in the Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
04:07You're back into the 80s.
04:09Now, conversely, as I take you back here, watch how the heat moves.
04:13All right, so there we go.
04:15There's today.
04:17There's the heat today, right?
04:19Let me two box this.
04:21So, there's the high temperatures today, Friday.
04:24See how it starts moving?
04:25It's still going to be another hot day.
04:27Then Saturday.
04:28See how it's moving across Germany?
04:31So, Germany, your hottest day is going to be Saturday.
04:33And then Sunday starts pushing into Poland.
04:37And then as we get into Monday, you start talking about the Ukraine.
04:40So, when you play it forward fast here, you can see how the heat moves Saturday, Sunday, and then Monday.
04:48So, things will be coming to an end.
04:50I was talking, showing you Paris.
04:54Let me show you Warsaw, Poland.
04:57Let me put this in generic.
05:03So, there's, look at Warsaw.
05:05Over 100 degrees, both Sunday and Monday.
05:08And then we cool things down.
05:09By early, by the later part of next week, it should be done.
05:12But it's quite a historic heat wave.
05:15Now, let's go to the United States.
05:17I want to show you this.
05:19Because this upper high is going to be building across the mid-south and the southeast.
05:25So, watch the upper high.
05:27This is Thursday night.
05:29Friday night.
05:30Saturday night.
05:31Here we go.
05:33Sunday.
05:35Monday.
05:36Tuesday.
05:38This is probably when it's at its peak.
05:40Right here.
05:41Tuesday.
05:42across the mid-west.
05:44All right.
05:45That's where it's at its peak.
05:47And you look at the temperatures in here.
05:49Look at those in the 90s.
05:51Now, one thing to keep an eye on.
05:52As the upper high starts to shift by late in the week, you get more of a west-northwest flow
05:58coming into the Carolinas.
05:59Watch how the heat starts to build there.
06:01So, this is Monday.
06:03Highs.
06:05Tuesdays.
06:07Wednesdays.
06:08See the heat building in the Carolinas?
06:10Because you're getting that northwesterly flow.
06:14Thursday.
06:16Friday.
06:17So, Wednesday and Thursday, the core of the heat is going to be in the Carolinas.
06:21See, because the upper high is building northward.
06:23We're going to get that west-northwest flow into the Carolinas.
06:26By the way, the other thing to watch for.
06:28The heat doesn't really ever get into the northeast.
06:31You see the core of the heat's here?
06:33But you're going to have to worry about some nocturnal showers and thunderstorms,
06:38especially Tuesday night into Wednesday across the northeast.
06:42So, again, the heat wave's coming to the northeast.
06:45It'll be there next week.
