00:01...vesting styles and opposing personalities in an historic 140-pound championship fight.
00:07Zab Judah, Kostya Zou, next on Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:57So, let's go.
01:01Tonight, the boxing and entertainment capital of the world is the scene for one of the year's most enticing and
01:07highly anticipated matchup.
01:09Welcome to Las Vegas, Nevada, where two of boxing's best will square off in a rare three-belt title unification
01:16featuring two utterly contrasting styles.
01:19It's the biggest fight at 140 pounds since Julio Cesar Chavez's hugely controversial win over Meldrick Tanner back in 1990.
01:28The other landmark matchup at this weight involved Alexis Arguello versus Aaron Friar in 1982.
01:35In our main event, it's the anxiously awaited and much-talked-about fight to decide the undisputed 140-pound champion.
01:43The thunder from down under, hard-hitting, no-nonsense WBC-WBA champion Kaskiazoo facing the slick, charismatic Southpaw from Brooklyn,
01:52New York, undefeated IBF titleist Zab Judah.
01:57And in our co-feature, he's regarded by many as the hottest young prospect in boxing.
02:02The baby-faced assassin, unbeaten Francisco Pancino Bojado, will take on former Mexican state junior welterweight champion Mauro Lacerro.
02:14Well, they call it the city of entertainment, and it really is like a city within a city.
02:18It's the strolling MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, located in the heart of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip.
02:24And this evening, we come to you from a venue that's become very familiar to boxing fans everywhere.
02:29It's home to countless world championship fights, as once again, we're at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the site for
02:36what shapes up as a compelling battle between two determined champions with one distinct objective, world title unification.
02:48Hello again, everybody. Steve Albert ringside from Las Vegas.
02:51Well, the junior welterweight or super lightweight title hasn't been unified since 1968, when a slugger from Honolulu named Paul
02:58Fuji ruled with a potent Hawaiian punch.
03:01We've been waiting 33 years for a single champion to emerge.
03:05This matchup has been worth the wait.
03:07Pure puncher Kostya Zhu, calm and composed, was born in Russia, relocated in Australia, and has been sending his opponents
03:14down under ever since.
03:16Pure boxer Zab Judah, energetic, hyper, and Brooklyn all the way, is a southpaw with dazzling speed and moves.
03:23While their styles, personalities, and backgrounds offer stark contrasts, their commitment and desire are much the same.
03:31Unquestionably, both are deserving of this rare opportunity to unify the title.
03:35And barring unforeseen circumstances, we'll leave tonight with the best 140-pound fighter in the world.
03:43With that, let's take a look at the arrival of Kostya Zhu, the man with the curious name, says his
03:49power, experience, and brains will set him apart from Judah.
03:51Very serious demeanor, feels the media is biased towards Judah, has been uncharacteristically snippy with some reporters.
03:58Judah calls who one-dimensional with a straightforward, no-defense style, but Zhu has three belts, a brilliant amateur career
04:05to show for it.
04:06He's 9-0, eight knockouts since his only loss to Vince Phillips in 97, with wins over Miguel Angel Gonzalez,
04:12a shot, Julio Cesar Chavez, and the southpaw, Shambay Mitchell.
04:21And the arrival earlier tonight of his opponent.
04:24You know what I mean?
04:28Undefeated.
04:28Undefeated.
04:29I love you.
04:32Trust me.
04:33My Yankees got to do it.
04:34Judah got to do it.
04:34We got to do the Yankees.
04:35Come on, let's do it.
04:36Let's do it.
04:36Let's do it.
04:38Let's get it, baby.
04:40Yeah, he's a lot looser than Zhu.
04:42His first true test, yet Judah brimming with confidence, is he overconfident?
04:46Despite Zhu's stifling power, he calls the task ahead easy, saying Zhu is like Swiss cheese full of holes.
04:52Judah's defended his belt five times, but doesn't have nearly the quality of opposition or experience of Zhu.
04:58Yet he says his hand speed, movement, and overall slick boxing skills will carry him to victory.
05:09But tonight, it's a different story, as the winner will emerge as only the third current undisputed world champion in
05:15boxing's 17 divisions.
05:17Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins, of course, the others.
05:20With that, let me bring on my ringside partner, former world champion Bobby Chez.
05:23And Bobby, how would you compare and contrast the fighting styles of Zhu and Judah?
05:27Well, Steve, Kostya Zhu is very much a search-and-destroy type fighter.
05:31He applies a ton of pressure.
05:32He has tremendous power in both hands, and he's shown in the past to be in excellent condition.
05:36So, every minute of every round, a legitimate threat.
05:39Zab Judah, slick southpaw, boxer-puncher with good power, but blazing speed, offensively as well as defensively.
05:46Defensively, he gives angles, movement, hard to hit clean twice, also shown to be in great shape.
05:50I think on paper, a classic matchup.
05:53Zab Judah, a 3-1 favorite going in.
05:55A little surprising, thought it might be a bit closer.
05:58Let's hear what both Kostya Zhu and Zab Judah had to say earlier this week here in Las Vegas.
06:07His style is like Swiss cheese.
06:09There's a lot of holes.
06:09He make a lot of mistakes.
06:11Not to dog him or anything, but he's not a skillful fighter.
06:13He knows one style.
06:14He'll walk in and try to destroy what's in front of him.
06:17But what you can't hit, you can't beat.
06:20I'm happy.
06:21I'm really happy that the people, my opponents, think about me lower than who I am.
06:29I'm really comfortable with this.
06:31He doesn't know what the pressure is.
06:33Constant pressure from first second to the last second.
06:37Where he can't breathe because I will not make him breathe.
06:42It's my time.
06:43He started the year on 23.
06:44I mean, you look at the Capra's, I mean, he had a time.
06:47It's my time now.
06:49He thinks that I'm 32 years old.
06:51I'm saying it's not old.
06:53This is the great age now.
06:56And I'm really hungry.
06:59I'm probably more hungry than he is right now.
07:02It's a fight of my destiny.
07:05I believe this is the fight I want for a long time.
07:08This is a fight where I can show all my ability, the best ability.
07:15I haven't been about this fight for two years now.
07:17It's a good feeling.
07:18It's just like, let's go.
07:20Let's get it on.
07:21You know what I mean?
07:22I just can't wait.
07:25Yes, both supremely confident with so much at stake.
07:29The question may be, who stands to lose more in defeat?
07:33Before we get to our first fight, as usual, we invite Showtime subscribers with internet access to score tonight's bouts

07:56Once again, the web address is SHO.com.
08:01Well, if Zab Judah and Kostya Zou are the top 140-pound fighters today, then Francisco Panchito Bajardo represents the
08:08future.
08:09One of the freshest faces and brightest young stars in boxing, the fast-rising Bajardo is up to 8-0
08:15with 8 KOs.
08:16The Los Angelin, by way of Mexico, averages a minuscule 1.63 rounds per bite and has yet to go
08:22past three.
08:23An engaging 18-year-old turned pro in January and the youngest member of the 2000 Mexican Olympic team, thus
08:31the Olympic fanfare.
08:52Francisco Panchito Bajardo already developing a tremendous following.
09:03Many of the fans here in Las Vegas already know who he is, even though he's just 18 years of
09:10age.
09:14As he makes his way up to the ring, went to the same high school as Oscar De La Hoya,
09:21Garfield High in Los Angeles.
09:24Oscar says someday he's going to take his place.
09:27As we close in on our first bout, it'll be unbeaten, super lightweight sensation.
09:31Francisco Panchito Bajardo against the veteran Mauro Lucero in Bajardo's second scheduled 10-round bout.
09:44Mauro Lucero out of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
09:46A step up in opposition for Bajardo.
09:49Lucero with 43 fights, 34-8-1, 22 knockouts.
09:52former Mexican state 140-pound champ, which several world-class contenders went the distance,
09:58although lost a close majority decision to then WBC lightweight champ Cesar Bazan.
10:04But he's had only one fight this year.
10:05He's lost five of his last seven, so he is really a non-risk.
10:09But Bobby Lucero, by far the most experienced opponent for Bajardo.
10:13Will it make a difference, though, with Bajardo's speed and overall superior skills?
10:16No, I really don't think so, Steve.
10:18There was a time maybe a couple of years ago, but of those five of those last seven that he
10:22lost,
10:23four of them were by TKO or knockout.
10:25He's not looking that good.
10:27He's not in his prime or peak form.
10:29His experience, though, is nothing compared to what this young tiger brings to the table.
10:33His skills are just too much.
10:36And the very promising Francisco Panchito Bajardo's second fight in three weeks averages a fight
10:41every 34 days off a scintillating second-round knockout over the Moore season.
10:45Eleazar Contreras for his first title, if you will.
10:49WBCU's super lightweight belt.
10:50Took Contreras out with a body shot.
10:52Already being labeled a can't miss as a future champion.
10:56Speed and power in his game.
10:58Big left took.
10:58Not only his ring skills that impressed, but his maturity and focus.
11:02Almost everybody in boxing, Bobby, talking about this kid.
11:06Even, as I mentioned, De La Hoya.
11:08Is the spotlight too bright for Bajardo?
11:10You know, I really don't think so.
11:12He's very focused.
11:13He's very, very humble.
11:14And he works hard.
11:15He is probably going to set a new stage or a new limit for that spotlight.
11:19Based on everybody's assessments, this kid is a monster.
11:23All right, Bobby, let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
11:26The teenager, Bajardo, 11 years younger than Lucero.
11:29Slight one-inch height advantage for Lucero.
11:32Bajardo gives away a big five and a half inches in reach.
11:34And yesterday's weigh-in, Bajardo, 142, Lucero, 141.
11:39Tonight, Bajardo, 147, Lucero, 144.
11:43Key rules, no standing eight, no three knockdown rule.
11:45A fighter cannot be saved by the bell at any round.
11:47If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth, it's a technical draw.
11:52After the end of four, they go to the scorecards.
11:55So here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, we're getting ready for Panchito Bajardo versus Mauro Lucero.
12:01We are set for the formal introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
12:08Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you.
12:10And we welcome you to the City of Entertainment, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
12:16We have a big night of action coming your way.

12:34our physicians at ringside, Dr. Margaret Goodman, Dr. William Berliner, Dr. Al Capana, and Dr. Gino Signorino.
12:41Timekeepers at the bell also keeping count of the knockdowns, we have James Cavan and Mike LaCella.
12:47Introducing to you our three judges, all from Las Vegas, Nevada.
12:52Bill Graham, Dave Moretti, and Paul Smith.
12:56And introducing our third man to the ring, our referee in charge of this bout, Kenny Bayless.
13:02All right, fans, here we go.
13:04Ten rounds of boxing scheduled in a super lightweight special attraction.
13:10Introducing to you first on my right, he is fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black trunks with gold
13:15trim,
13:16hailing from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
13:20His weight, 141 pounds.
13:23His record stands at 34 wins, eight losses, one draw, with 22 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:30Ladies and gentlemen, here is the former Mexican super lightweight champion.
13:35Introducing Mauro, Puyos de Oro, Lucero.
13:43And his opponent across the ring on my left, fighting out of the red corner, this 10-round attraction,
13:48wearing black trunks with silver trim, hailing from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
13:54He weighed in at 142 pounds.
13:57As an amateur, he was the youngest member of the 2000 Mexican Olympic team.
14:02As a pro, his record is unblemished at eight wins, no losses.
14:07All eight wins coming by way of knockout.
14:09Here is the undefeated WBC super lightweight youth champion,
14:14known as the baby-faced assassin.
14:16Introducing Francisco Panchito Bojado.
14:26And once again, Kenny Bayless is our referee in charge.
14:29Now to give instructions, 10 rounds of action scheduled.
14:34Okay, we've got a very wide band here, very wide.
14:37Any punch in this area, any punch in this area is considered a clean punch.
14:42Okay, all right, all right, now, gentlemen, any punch in this area is a clean punch.
14:48Okay, all right, now.
14:53Yeah, punch is here, okay.
14:55Trunks here, okay, okay.
14:57These are high.
14:59Now, gentlemen, went over the rules in the dressing room.
15:01I want you to protect yourself at all times, keep the fight clean at all times,
15:05and what I say, you must obey.
15:07Good luck to both of you.
15:08Touch gloves.
15:14Kenny Bayless making sure of the belt lines.
15:17Bojado, it should be noted, has four of his eight knockouts in the first round.
15:23Can Lucero pose a legitimate threat to Bojado?
15:26He's an aggressive guy who likes to apply constant pressure, very busy,
15:29more of a mauler than a boxer, needs to outwork.
15:33He said he's going to have a surprise or two for Mr. Bojado.
15:38And he says that Bojado will be tested.
15:41We shall see.
15:42Well, I suspect that he better have that surprise pretty early,
15:45because Bojado likes to get right to work right away.
15:48Bojado told us if the body shots aren't working at the top,
15:51he'll just proceed to outbox Lucero.
15:56Bojado, and fight smart.
15:59Bojado feels the fact he had a pro style as an amateur
16:02has really contributed to his early success as a professional.
16:06Lucero feels that his experience will be a big factor here tonight.
16:09Does not plan to take Bojado deep and test his stamina.
16:13In fact, he said he intended to finish Bojado fast,
16:16saying it might not even go three rounds.
16:19Okay.
16:20I think that might be a mistake, but what do I know?
16:22Well, he said he'll be the first Lucero to apply the pressure.
16:27So far, it's been pretty tame.
16:30But right now, Bojado is taking his time, sizing up his opponent.
16:34Lucero's keeping his hands high, working a decent jab,
16:36trying to keep Panchito off balance.
16:40Bojado, of course, his featured weapon is that left hook.
16:43We just wonder how Lucero plans to neutralize that,
16:45if that becomes an issue.
16:49He told us, if Bojado throws one, I'll throw two.
16:54But he feels that Bojado's inexperience,
16:57and the fact that he's never fought for a Lucero,
16:59will be his downfall.
17:06Bojado is all about fast hands and fast fights.
17:11We'll see if it takes Bojado longer to figure Lucero out
17:14because of Mauro's experience.
17:17Bojado said, too, he was actually excited in fighting Lucero
17:20because it's a level, it's a step up in competition.
17:22He's somebody who said,
17:24maybe it will make me go some rounds.
17:26I want to go some rounds.
17:26But eventually, he has to.
17:31Will Lucero's lack of big punching power
17:33nullify the experience factor of Lucero
17:37and allow Bojado to take chances with his feet?
17:40And down he goes.
17:42Kurt Brown.
17:42Big left hook, Steve, and he's a delayed reaction.
17:45He stepped back, and you can see him shaking.
17:46Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, eight, nine.
17:51So much for neutralizing the left hook, Bobby.
17:55In your mouth, Pete.
17:56Neutralized it.
17:57I don't think he even saw it.
18:02Lucero is starched.
18:03Let's just hope he's all right.
18:06A wicked left hook to the body by Bojado.
18:10And there was another one to the head, too,
18:12right in the tempo of Steve,
18:13and a delayed reaction, and he just went down.
18:17So, again, the quick hands and the power of Panchito Bojado
18:22provides him with another first-round knockout,
18:25number five in nine fights.
18:27And there's his little brother, seven-year-old Angel,
18:30perhaps a future world champion.
18:31So they're checking the eyes of Mauro Lucero,
18:36Dr. Margaret Goodman right on the scene.
18:39And he just went down in a heap.
18:43Bojado barely breaking a sweat.
18:47Junior middleweight champ, Fernando Vargas,
18:49celebrates along with Panchito.
18:51Well, if he keeps this up,
18:52he can always fight every 30, 34 days.
18:54He can fight every 30, 34 minutes.
18:57I'm telling you.
19:02This is a first for Mauro Lucero, the veteran.
19:05He has never gone out in the first round.
19:07Right.
19:11So, the student schooling the so-called teacher in this one.
19:18No problem for Francisco Panchito Bojado,
19:21who ups his record to 9-0 with nine KOs.
19:26Lucero getting up on the stool.
19:29And he is really shaken up.
19:31Bojado's fights continue to be scheduled at a brisk pace.
19:34And why not?
19:35He just puts people down so quickly.
19:37Averaging about a fight per month.
19:39The last two separated by just three weeks.
19:43Man, at this pace,
19:44he may have close to 19 fights by his 19th birthday.
19:49Bojado continues to impress
19:51with his speed, power, poise, and patience.
19:55The more you watch him,
19:56the more you feel he could someday
19:58join the lengthy list of world champions from Mexico.
20:01I'll get him back.
20:02I'll get him back.
20:03And tonight, he disposes of Mexican Mauro Lucero
20:07his most experienced opponent to date in the first round.
20:11Lucero drops to 34, 9, and 1.
20:18As Panchito Bojado scores his fifth first round KO.
20:22Doing some posing with Fernando Vargas.
20:27Tommy Bojado's next scheduled appearance
20:29December 8th on the Oscar de la Hoya Roman Carveson card.
20:33Imagine this kid in five years
20:34if he keeps going the way he's going.
20:36Well, he's being projected to be a world champion
20:39in about a year and a half.
20:42Tommy, but now they're starting to put higher caliber,
20:45more experienced opponents in front of him,
20:47and it doesn't seem to matter.
20:48Right here, Tommy.
20:49Right here, Gary.
20:51Right here, Tommy.
20:55So Bojado,
20:57whose fights don't typically last very long,
21:00able to embrace
21:02Lucero, who's all right.
21:03On average, the baby-faced assassin's fights
21:05has lasted just over
21:06one and a half rounds.
21:16And he's not your stereotypical
21:17Metz-style face-first fighter,
21:19more of a stylist.
21:20You see, there's an early on,
21:21there's a body shot
21:22that may have taken some of the steam
21:24out of Lucero,
21:25but he blocks it pretty much.
21:28Doesn't really get to him.
21:29And a little later on,
21:30the left hook to the head,
21:31it's a shot to the temple.
21:32And down he goes,
21:34not to get up.
21:40There it is, right there.
21:41Left hook to the temple.
21:42He sees the delayed reaction.
21:44He backs up.
21:46And he just goes down.
21:49You can hear the reaction
21:50of the background.
21:52They don't think it's legit.
21:53They, they, it appears,
21:55when a guy stays standing
21:57and doesn't wobble immediately
21:58when you hit him,
21:58there's a delayed reaction.
21:59People assume there's a possibility
22:00of him just quitting.
22:03And...
22:04Well, there's no question,
22:05he didn't want to sustain
22:06any more punishment
22:07as we get it up
22:08to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
22:10Ladies and gentlemen,
22:12with the time of two minutes,
22:1314 seconds,
22:14in round number one,
22:16a referee in charge,
22:17Kenny Bayless,
22:17reaches the count of ten.
22:19The winner by way of knockout
22:21and still undefeated,
22:23the baby-faced assassin,
22:25Francisco,
22:26Lassero,
22:27Panchito,
22:29Bojado.
22:31Lassero caving like an accordion.
22:35I mean,
22:35it looked like the result
22:37of a body shot,
22:37but it was upstairs.
22:39Well,
22:39this kid has the look
22:40of a baby,
22:41but also has a very serious
22:43demeanor and cold
22:44concentration in the ring.
22:46He doesn't waste his punches,
22:47does he?
22:48Pretty efficient,
22:49I'd say.
22:49It didn't take long
22:50for him to dispose of Lassero.
22:52That was beyond
22:53extremely economical.
22:54Yes.
22:56The only questions remain,
22:58can he go ten hard rounds
22:59if necessary?
23:00So how is his stamina
23:01and how good can he become?
23:04We're standing by with Bojado.
23:05Standing by.
23:07Let's get it up to Tim Smith
23:09with Panchito.
23:11Thank you very much, Steve.
23:12We're here with Panchito,
23:14Bojado.
23:15You are making quick work
23:17of all of your opponents,
23:19and you make quick work
23:20of a guy who was supposed
23:21to stretch you
23:23and give you a little bit
23:23of work tonight.
23:26Is it getting frustrating
23:27just coming in
23:28and making quick work of guys?
23:30Well, this time,
23:30I felt that this guy
23:31was a good experience for me.
23:32He was going to be a lot tougher.
23:34I felt that he could take a punch.
23:36As soon as I hit him,
23:38he decided to take a knee,
23:39and I don't know,
23:39after that,
23:40I was expecting him
23:41to get up.
23:43Okay, we're going to take
23:44a look at the knockdown
23:46right here, Panchito,
23:47and you sort of describe
23:48what's going on.
23:49Okay, I was just trying
23:50to see an opening,
23:51just trying to take my time,
23:52just trying to figure out
23:53his style,
23:53and I hit him with a hook,
23:57and then I was going forward
23:58so I could finish him,
23:59and he decided to take a knee.
24:00I was expecting him
24:01to get up,
24:02but I guess he felt
24:04that I was stronger
24:05than he was,
24:06or I don't know
24:06what went to his head,
24:07but I was expecting him
24:08to get up.
24:08Okay, we're going to take
24:09another look at this.
24:11See, I was just,
24:12I connected him,
24:13and I wanted to go get
24:15him finishing him,
24:16but I saw him take a knee,
24:17and I didn't want to make
24:18the mistake of hitting him
24:19in the floor,
24:19so I thought he was
24:20going to get up again.
24:23Well, I hear the crowd
24:24behind us booing
24:25on the replay,
24:26and maybe perhaps
24:27they don't think that
24:28he gave his best effort,
24:30but tell me,
24:31you tell me,
24:31how hard do you think
24:32the shot was?
24:33Well, I mean,
24:35mentality-wise,
24:36I can't prepare
24:36for anything,
24:37to go the distance.
24:38I knew he was
24:38a tough fighter.
24:39He has a lot more
24:40experience than I do,
24:40so I train hard
24:41for this fight,
24:42and I mean,
24:43I came to give
24:44a good show,
24:45to give 100%
24:46and to show the people
24:46what I'm capable of.
24:47You know,
24:48I hit him good,
24:49connected him good,
24:49but I knew he was
24:50going to get up.
24:50I thought he was
24:51going to get up,
24:52but he didn't.
24:52You know,
24:53I did my best.
24:53He didn't get up.
24:54I don't know why,
24:55but, you know,
24:56for the next time,
24:57we're going to pick,
24:58I guess,
24:58harder opponents
24:59so I can get
25:00some experience.
25:01I knew I connected him good.
25:02Yeah, well,
25:03the ring doctor
25:03said that Lucero
25:05complained,
25:06Dr. Margaret Goodman
25:07said that Lucero
25:09complained of
25:10possibly an orbital
25:11fracture,
25:12so you must have
25:13connected pretty tough
25:14if that's what he's saying.
25:15Well,
25:15I knew I connected
25:16it good because
25:17I hit him.
25:17I felt the punch.
25:18I felt his head.
25:19I hit the tempo
25:20right in the spot,
25:21but that wasn't
25:23all my power,
25:24so I was expecting
25:25him to get up.
25:28That's why after,
25:28when I went to my corner,
25:29I was just ready
25:30to go again.
25:30I've seen him
25:31do the 10 count
25:32and I just got excited.
25:34Okay, well,
25:34congratulations on this win
25:36and I guess you're
25:37going to have to find
25:38tougher and tougher guys,
25:40but it's only a matter
25:41of time, Steve,
25:43before he moves on
25:44to bigger and better things.
25:47All right, Tim,
25:48and for all you
25:48future boxing announcers
25:50out there,
25:52when you have a guy
25:53like Panchito Bajardo,
25:54the key is to get
25:55all your information
25:56in early
25:59because there's
26:00just no way
26:00you can get it in
26:01during the fight.
26:03Let's take another look.
26:04The thing went so quickly
26:06that Bobby and I
26:07will attempt
26:08to describe it again.
26:11Here it is
26:11from the opening
26:12pounds
26:13in all deference
26:14to WBO champ
26:15DeMarcus Chop Chop Corley.
26:16in all the week.
