00:00Well we settle in for the WBO Junior
00:06Featherweight Championship as Marco
00:08Antonio Pereira defends his title
00:10against Pastor Moran and Pastor
00:13Moran getting his first world title
00:15shot his United States debut former
00:18South American Junior Featherweight
00:20champ and Argentine Bantamweight
00:22champion fighting more recently at
00:24featherweight was as fought
00:25exclusively in Argentina his lone
00:27fight against the defeat August of
00:2997 seven fights ago lost by decision
00:31to Jose Rojas he had won his first 36
00:34fights 6-0 since his only loss with
00:37only one knockout no real
00:38recognizable names on his ring record
00:40Freddie what's your take on Pastor
00:43Moran what kind of challenges he
00:44posed to Pereira very tough I think
00:46it's 42 and 1 in Argentina in Buenos
00:50Aires now you're not talking about a
00:51country that doesn't have boxing they
00:52have boxing every Saturday night and
00:54they're like Mexico they get in there
00:55and they got to fight or die and so
00:57I'm looking at a guy that's 42 and 1 and
01:01that scares me to death if I'm the
01:02other guy I think we've got a heck of
01:04a barn burner going here of course we've
01:05got a guy as we have seen Pereira can
01:08take a punch he can get on the canvas
01:10and he gets up mad yeah the second
01:13defense of his second reign is WBO
01:14Junior Featherweight champ the champion
01:16right there originally won the belt in
01:1895 beating Daniel Jimenez after eight
01:20successful defenses including a 12th round
01:22TKO of Kennedy McKinney one of 1996's best
01:25fights he lost back to back to Junior
01:28Jones but in controversial fashion and
01:30following an eight-month layoff for an
01:32injured hand three straight knockouts
01:33before regaining the title for the
01:35third round TKO over Richie Winton
01:38comes off a second round TKO of Paul
01:40Lloyd to retain his crown in April
01:42Bobby they call him the babyface
01:44assassin everything to him is a war
01:46he really wants WBC champ Eric
01:48Morales could he be looking past
01:50Marin you know he might be looking past
01:52Marin but you know he's the traditional
01:54Mexican warrior with all the machismo
01:56added in he likes to get to work get
01:58to work fast and often he wants his
01:59pound of flesh and he wants it all the
02:01time so stereotype of well-conditioned
02:03tough durable good punching hispanic
02:05fighter he fits the bill all right
02:07Bobby tail of the tight hard to believe
02:09Barrera only 25 seems like he's been
02:11around a long long time five years
02:13younger than Marin four inch height
02:14advantage for Barrera both right at the
02:17weight limit and just a one inch reach
02:18advantage Barrera we go to the key

05:32marcos pastor vamos cubrir otra vez las instrucciones
05:35obedezcan las reglas mía durante el combate protégense todo tiempo
05:40les deseo suerte buena perea limpia tengo el cinturón aquí está alto aquí está la
05:45linea give out knock you okay when i said that a look
05:50bobby says how about your keys to victory beginning with the champion
05:53barrera has to box smart and throw accurate combinations against a very
05:57awkward marine and on the other side more in he has to make rare miss
06:01get on the inside and work really really hard
06:04as jim gray appointed out originally barrera was scheduled to fight undefeated
06:07on hell bus case but the barrera camp belt advice case was too tough an
06:11opponent so exit bus case enter morin wouldn't it be
06:15ironic if morin provides barrera with a difficult fight or even pulls off the upset
06:21barrera in the white trunks morin in the maroon
06:25well after talking to morin's camp you would think that they have one of the best
06:28hidden secrets in boxing this kid right
06:31boy they did talk him up pretty good
06:34well he is tough he's a hard puncher good right hand
06:36he's kind of unorthodox lots of waist and leg movement a good chin and heart
06:41there you see him already switching so he is going to be awkward
06:45awkward is what they said he said that he's just you can't hardly define him the way he does
06:49he moves very well on both sides bends his waist very well see that i mean that was an awkward thing
06:56right there while barrera's people say he's trained for 12 hard rounds barrera said he's going to go in
07:02looking for the knockout he'll do everything possible to score a knockout he said well you know
07:06barrera goes for knockouts he is 36 years old and i mean 36 knockouts and uh babyface that assassin is
07:14an apt title for barrera's trainer said he was very worried about marine's head because he comes in
07:19from such awkward angles and not only that but he doesn't make the traditional counter punches
07:23he needs barrera to be smart about it barrera a strong puncher particularly the left hook always
07:28in good condition always applies steady pressure
07:34if he does have a weakness is that oftentimes he he goes in one direction perhaps too much
07:38he only knows how to go forward and his defense is questionable at times this guy is awkward bobby
07:44i mean he's coming from all angles he looks like he's in the street fight
07:47and you may have noticed uh it doesn't say barrera on the back of his trunks it says tapio
07:57either he got the wrong trunks or he's a big johnny tapio fan he has barrera on the front of his
08:02trunks but on the back he has tapio maybe he means tapio's behind him now he's going forward to other
08:08opponents johnny tapio recently upset by paulie ayala but he'll be back you know that the low blow a left
08:13took south of the border by barrera both guys warned to keep him up you know barrera this round just
08:21trying to put some order to this guy just saying wait a minute settle down fight fight straight but
08:27this guy's coming from all angles barrera's trainer rudy perez who knows all about marine
08:33told us barrera has to box intent intelligently and use lateral movement
08:38well he's got morin in trouble right here in round one 32 seconds to go part of that in trouble was a
08:46nice right hand on top of the head while morin was doing that awkward thing he does his legs are
08:50constantly switching constantly off balance yet still effective with his punches yeah he got hit
08:55while he was off balance that wasn't so much a devastating punches it wasn't off balance but
08:59but he felt it herrera is much more effective for a little sequence here using a double and triple jab
09:05to just get to close the gap and get to work morin but morin is a very awkward jab
09:12a brave he is awkward he definitely is grins left hand came awfully close to touching the canvas
09:29so what happened you can't drop balance with you don't stand still
09:42take a look at that almost knock down combination slip punch morin just so awkward with his feet
09:48here he's always leaning he gets hit there's his foot just kind of slips out from under him as he gets
09:52hit while he's twisting and turning constantly going from southpaw to righty righty to southpaw
09:57i don't think that was a as much a clean punch making the effects on his twist but there you see
10:02he just spins out and his left foot comes out from under him it almost was a punch in the shoulder and
10:07the arm as he was spinning out i mean it was really an awkward thing wasn't a punch to the head that got
10:11him in trouble not at all well maybe morin's camp was trying to surprise us too when we talked to
10:18to them yesterday they said he was a righty morin he fought most around one as a southpaw
10:23could you define that i mean i didn't know what he was fighting he was one way he was switching
10:29he was going back and going forward wow was he awkward well he came out as an orthodox fighter for
10:34about 10 seconds and he's already back to southpaw yeah he's fighting as a lefty now back to righty
10:41very unusual style trying to confuse barrera obviously but barrera continues to dictate the pace
10:49he can fire from either side that doesn't seem to bother him with the right jabs oh big right hand
10:54that caught that caught barrera right on the face that's what barrera's train was talking about
11:00oh he got hit as a late hit hit on the break that's what barrera's train was talking about he jumps and
11:04leaps he said from such odd angles he has to be smart and box smart boy this is one of the most
11:10most unorthodox awkward fighters we've seen in a long time pastor marin in maroon marina maroon
11:19receiving word here that the reason it says tapia on the back well he might be a johnny tapia fan but
11:25it's his mother's family name oh really there you go there you go the things you don't find out when
11:31you listen to showtime in an effort to further you with information the things we do find out oh
11:39that was being colloquial halfway through round two somebody gave me a dictionary you can see that
11:46brer is still having a little trouble figuring out the constant switching awkward style marin
11:52he just i don't think morin even knows which way he's going until he goes yeah he just in mid-flight
11:57seems to occur to him which which punch he's going to throw right now this is a little bit dull
12:02compared to the first round or digging left uppercut to the uh the stomach by barrera
12:10well marin is elusive at times the weirdest fighter i've seen in quite some time as i've
12:16said in the past many times affected in their awkwardness yeah
12:19yeah
12:24barrera has watched tapes of marine says he's very aggressive as we have seen
12:29but the the overall feeling is marines lack of big fight experience will
12:34be the big factor in the end
12:37you know because he's always moving jumping twisting turning pivoting he really is not a big power
12:42puncher he leaps and dives in from time to time with some good shots but he's not a truly
12:48good well-balanced power puncher how would i knock that 26 guys
12:54right but we don't know the 26 guys what was it greg haugen said tijuana taxi drivers
13:00when he was going to fight chavez wow ticking shots to the body and ribs again by barrera
13:08and marin smiles back he's a tough kid from argentina
13:12six seconds yeah his nickname is bakamala which is bad cow so bad cow disease i guess is what he's brought in
13:19here
13:23he said just keep working
13:32go lateral and then throw your shot go to the side
13:39more jabs more jabs more jabs let him get in
13:48keep him in front of me jab him and keep him in front of him
13:56that's a good place to be ready for the better the better career career comes out he always wants to get to work
13:59he has more in on the ropes this is where he's effective it's not the only place but one of the best places
14:04and he always goes to the left hook to the body a la cedars chavez
14:08two-time world champion marco antonio barrera and pastor marin who has never been down he almost
14:19went down but to maintain his balance against the ropes
14:24barrera who turned pro at the tender age of 15 oh look at that 10 years ago that's what i call a
14:34helicopter punch he started with one and he came out with it looked like two flailing wings of a
14:38helicopter what is that this guy is really odd i'm thoroughly convinced that sometimes he's not
14:44sure which way he's going and his body just doesn't respond well i'll tell you who does know where he's
14:48going barrera he just he settled down to his real fight just put him in front of you and punch
14:53barrera who won a world title at 21 is stalking her look how low barren's gloves are and he's
14:59going to get himself in all kinds of danger here in the second like right now yeah he's getting
15:04pummeled now barrera most of those shots you know were blocked marine does hide and duck behind his
15:12hands pretty well he boxes to me he blocks well with the gloves he's got a pretty good welt developing
15:17under that left eye but those those punches aren't getting through but something's getting through
15:22because that eye is beginning to puff up a little blood is coming from it yeah we see that's been cut
15:27that's over the left uh cheekbone barrera has killed his last five opponents his longest knockout
15:34streak looking to make it six right here
15:36wild swing and a miss by barrera don't be confused by tapia that's his family name
15:45look at the front of his trunks has to begin to slow down a little bit as the attack mounts
15:52from barrera barrera just putting in the attack willing to just let that time go by whoa counterpunch
15:58left hook there by barrera after a wild miss by marine barrera starting to get his timing a little
16:03better he's starting to be able to time the leaps in the hands yeah he's got this kid uh and he's
16:09catching him on the ropes yeah he's catching him on the ropes and anytime a guy like barrera catches
16:13you on the ropes you're going to have some penalty to pay he's going to leave you with some body hurt
16:18we're in 30 his first world title shot out of salta argentina 42 and 1 with 23 knockouts in the
16:23maroon low blow there but referee estevez was way behind look at the body shots he's game in a but
16:30barrera's landing repeatedly straight right hand booming shot he's gaming barrera's good that's the two
16:37two differences right good always beats game usually
16:44and a combination blocked by morin
16:49oh he's doing it at will now he's got a barrera has morin against the ropes but
16:53we're able to twist and turn his way out of there
16:56see the amount of pressure barrera is able to apply he's constantly in his face that's not just
17:01body pressure it's mental pressure he's constantly got more worried about the onslaught
17:05then his body's feeling the onslaught battle fatigue mentally as well as quickly
17:09excuse me physically
17:12trying to battle back but usually barrera has all the answers it's like a glorified sparring session
17:18for barrera whoa
17:27tell us straighter time here's barrera doing what he does best he gets inside he's got his he's got his
17:32jab's up here he's throwing his right hands but then what he does he's working on hook to the body
17:36he's working right hands over the top and he's coming up the top under and over mixing the punches
17:41up there's the jab right to the body with the hook there's the one two up top again
17:45staying with something to the body staying on top of morin morin tries to fight his way out but
17:50this kind of pressure eventually morin is going to fold because he has to fight or die
17:59there's another look at it from the side the jab keeps his hands up the left hook to the body
18:03right hand to the head right to the body double right to the head morin eventually has to fire and
18:08get rare off him but we're very effective they're starting to swell the eyes starting to cut the eyes
18:15and i'm sure starting to hurt the body well in the last round round three a welt did develop under
18:20the left eye of the challengers barrera started to solve morin's awkward style let's see if he can
18:25pick up where he left off while we have a second congratulations to jimmy lennon jr and his lovely
18:29wife christine on the birth of their second child alexander to go along with the other son jimmy
18:35they're going to have a tough time they wanted a name after you i said no you know it just embarrassed
18:39you know steve lennon all right round four birdie lennon sounds pretty well next time all right here's
18:49barrera once again all over you can see in morin's eyes even that those punches are taking their toll on
18:56emotionally as well as physically he is guarding that body ever so carefully little head fake there
19:01by morin at some point morin's going to get really wild because he figures this thing's going to get away
19:06from him and that's when that's when the effectiveness of barrera will come to point
19:13right now he's just building up his case sawn him down even while morin holds those gloves over his face
19:20barrera's a heavy-handed fighter he could punch those gloves into his face and still swell his eyes
19:25through his own gloves yeah barrera always eager to exchange a stalking type fighter pounds the body
19:34chavez-like qualities from the same spot but you see you see how he has changed completely to holding
19:40that glove up he holds those gloves up he looks like floyd patterson he holds them up look at him
19:46you'll notice too that marine has to hold the gloves up so tight and so close to his face and body that
19:51he can't get in his own form to fire with any power and every time he he fires it's usually a lunging
19:57awkward shot and he's all balanced and then has to answer to barrera his shots are much harder than his
20:06his eyes are both eyes are beginning to puff up they're looking red streaked and he's got to be tired
20:12he keeps putting his hands too low by his sides and that's usually a sign of fatigue and being punished
20:21worn out it would be very interesting to see what his corner tells him to do to change the tide of this
20:26fight because every round is almost a repeat of the round before yeah
20:30ferrera has imposed his excellence on him and he doesn't know what to do about it
20:35marina doesn't know what to do about well marina's attacking he has one foot here he cannot have power
20:39on his punches again a mad flurry by barrera back comes for red left hand right on the face and it
20:45stopped no no no it was a banged head thought he got butt yeah that was a butt that he's pretty
20:50he complained to the referee they did come together he is so mad he says look
20:58he see he's he is so tiny cut under a brer's right eye
21:02i'm sure we'll get a good look at that headbutt later oh wow that last shot to the bottom
21:18he said that was a headbutt but it is still cut
21:28he says it's not bad it's not bad
21:46that's so silly they put the stuff in then they wipe it out then they put it back in
22:01all right let's look
22:02up at my range charging here and brewer just stops eventually no just fall lands right on his
22:11cheekbone oh he does they did not take a point away they said it was unintentional we just found out
22:16just to keep you apprised well it wasn't that crazy
22:21and doesn't but big
22:22big well here we go round five as
22:29a result of the headbutt a small
22:31cut opening under Pereira's eye
22:34that right eye he was infuriated
22:39in the fourth round trying to
22:40get the attention of Benji
22:42Estevez Jr. the referee but he's
22:44got to fight off can't just stop
22:46in the middle of the fight bunch
22:50being blocked by Morin one of the
22:54most awkward unorthodox fighters
22:55we see look at that speaking of
22:56awkward that shot came out of
22:58nowhere that one came from Buenos
23:01Aires amazing that he's as accurate
23:03as he is with some of the angles he
23:04throws these punches from I never
23:06saw an uppercut start at the floor
23:07like that I mean wow is that bizarre
23:12Morin has fought in seven cities in
23:14Argentina but never in the 50 states
23:16and never against this level of
23:18competition that's for sure well
23:20he's being out slick here I mean
23:22every round I can see I got that
23:27record he's really really confusing
23:29fighter to fight but he's fighting
23:32the best around now you can feel a
23:43fury building up in in Burr and you
23:45know like hey stop and fight right
23:48on top of which you butted me and
23:49cut me now come on let's get this
23:51thing going
23:52every once in a while that awkward
24:00style does score for Morin but for
24:01the most part I think the Rara has
24:04itself and when it scores it's
24:06meaningless punches it's like Bobby
24:08said if you're flying through the
24:09air your punches and got too much
24:10on you know and you're off balance
24:12and then you have to be ready to
24:15take some leather and return these
24:16punches he's going back he's flying
24:17through the air I mean they just don't
24:18have anything on him this guy it
24:21should be a like a in the circus it
24:23wasn't Jorge Baez in the show yeah he
24:25and Baez can have a hell of a good
24:27fight that would be some fight huh
24:28saltimboques they go
24:30he's going to have a good fight
24:32acrobats
24:35wrinkling brothers can promote that
24:3640 seconds to go around five it's
24:40been mostly if not all Marco Antonio
24:44Brera two-time world champion 48 to
24:46a 36 knockout he's only two losses
24:49back to back to junior Jones somebody
24:51asked him would you like to get back
24:53to junior again for revenge he said
24:54doesn't mean anything anymore
24:57so this is second title defense in
25:00his second reign as champ don't
25:02anybody kids revenge always means
25:03something this is kind of the dullest
25:06fight I mean the dullest round of
25:09this fight nothing happened both of
25:13those losses to Jones in highly
25:14controversial fashion to Bobby Chez
25:22goes inside we're going to show you
25:24just how awkward this guy is I mean
25:26normally you leave your left foot in
25:27front of you if you're an orthodox
25:28fighter he just run one foot after
25:30it's like he's running and throwing
25:31punches watch he just run his hands
25:33two hands at the same time it's the
25:36most awkward incredible things I've
25:37ever seen one foot in front of another
25:39two hands at a time incredible
25:43you've got to throw punches you stop
25:50going backwards and come forward throw
25:52your hands throw your hands
25:57as soon as you see him throw something
26:02yourself come on come on use your hands
26:03you're not using your hands come
26:05forward so let's see that gets him a
26:06little steamed see the little trickle
26:11of blood under the right eye of
26:13Barrera the result of a headbutt a
26:14couple of rounds ago Bobby in that
26:16inside in that inside the ropes they
26:18got to that helicopter punch which
26:20would yeah well good at a time it's
26:22impossible to throw the point to
26:24throw two looping punches unless
26:26you're trying to imitate a helicopter
26:28well if Barrera wins tonight he says
26:30it'll be very difficult to move up
26:32because 121 21 is his natural weight
26:35he'd like to fight WBC super bantam
26:37weight champion Eric Morales a
26:38fellow Mexican that would be a
26:39terrific fight that's interesting
26:41every round now for the past two
26:42rounds I've noticed they come out
26:43touch gloves that respect factor
26:45maybe going a little too well
26:46probably thinks it's the last round
26:48yeah it's interesting every round
26:49now for the past two rounds I've
26:51noticed they come out touch gloves
26:52that respect factor maybe going a
26:53little too well Barrera probably
26:55thinks it's the last round yeah
26:57but he's not sure a Robinson right
27:00he's the one who are yeah that's
27:02close with this in the restaurant
27:03oh yes it is yeah and it was it
27:05was the second round yeah it is
27:07for you about a minute gone by in
27:12round six we're almost halfway
27:14there it's a 12 round championship
27:16fight for the WBO junior
27:17featherweight crown he's trying
27:21harder as his corner total come
27:23forward throwing punches well at
27:25least he's doing that he's doing
27:26with the corner at all we're in a
27:28southpaw stance has been most of
27:30the fight come together like two
27:33bulls he says watch your heads
27:34when you come together like that
27:35come together so hard Barrera off a
27:41second round technical knockout over
27:50Paul Lloyd to retain his title April
27:513rd in Kensington England the guy who
27:52gave Nassim Hamed some trouble but
27:56Barrera able to dispose of him
27:58quickly this one going in around six
28:02this is the type of fight that looks
28:03like it has the distance written all
28:05over the crowd starting to boo they're
28:06getting upset they want action I tell
28:08you a fight they wouldn't boo Tapia
28:10and Barrera and that's in the offing
28:12because Tapia wants to come up boy if
28:14he comes up to that whoa and that could
28:16be confusing oh that could be confusing
28:18with Tapia written on the back of
28:20Barrera ain't put Tapia Tapia there
28:21it looks like he's rooting for the
28:23opponent that's right that would be
28:24weird
28:30look at that that's that two punch again
28:32Bobby and then I'm sure Barrera's not
28:34sure which one to block and both feet
28:36were in the air when he landed right
28:39and it's impossible to have any power
28:41with even one foot in the air never
28:42mind two it's ballet
28:48there's a there's a saying we have
28:50in the gym and certain fighters no
28:52matter how much are good I can't
28:53fight junk fighters this is what we
28:55call a junk fighter junk doesn't
28:57mean that everything throws is bad
28:58but that it comes from the non
29:00stereotypical angles it's not from
29:03the way he was drawn up on the on
29:05the blackboard an awkward fighter
29:06can often make a polished skilled
29:08fighter look bad in the meantime
29:11faster his face is beginning to
29:13fall apart red streaks blood coming
29:16from both eyes like that
29:19out of the world let's look live at
29:22the former IVF heavyweight champion
29:25white buffer Francois Botha
29:29Francois getting sent for his big
29:31match with Shannon Bridges he was
29:32away coming to get you only on
29:35showtime championship box knock out
29:39baby yeah yeah these guys are like
29:41walking billboards for us it's very
29:43nice
29:48Francois to the beat
29:54see we gotta throw more in a
29:55combination more one two one two
29:56step it out
29:58everybody's saying the same thing
30:10throw more and I think Marine's
30:13throwing as much as he can the
30:15crowd is getting restless especially
30:17coming off that fine first bite
30:20round seven halfway through it looks
30:22like a clean sweep for the champion
30:23what about you guys clean sweep oh
30:26yeah big goose egg in the maroon
30:28corner the man of the maroon is
30:33Marin and the man of the white is
30:35Barrera say that fast five times
30:39folks on the Internet see it the
30:40same way the champion in total
30:42control that's what we got six and
30:44a goose egg and the best way for
30:46Barrera to keep Marin's head at bay
30:49and to be a little more effective
30:51would just be to do what he just
30:52did and that stuff a good strong
30:53jab will shotgun jab right down
30:55the plate
31:00the crowd doesn't like this at all
31:01there's a lot of mumbling and
31:02stumbling around oh that was a
31:04very low blow by Marine very low
31:06and if I imagine if we were in
31:08Mexico right now
31:10how the fans would be reacting
31:11well I know I'd be reacting
31:12we'd be getting showered with
31:13this thing bring they throw
31:15things they don't they don't
31:16holler they throw
31:17and while there's a dull moment
31:21should we mention that our
31:23compatriot Jeff Pomeroy the
31:25much beloved PR kid that worked
31:26with us is not going on to
31:27bigger things in Atlanta Georgia
31:29a heartfelt farewell to long time
31:31publicist Jeff Pomeroy leaving
31:32us here at the SCT and show
31:34time to become director of
31:35public relations for the
31:36Goodwill Games good luck Jeff
31:38misses quiet humor and his good
31:40effective work right now
31:44Carrera team over some heavy
31:46blows the head and by again the
31:49Marin although way behind has
31:51never been down in his career
31:53hard to hit him yeah it's hard
31:56you got to catch him first and
31:58then knock him down he's getting
31:59hit as his face shows but just
32:01not effectively enough and here
32:05he comes on the attack I mean
32:06look at that the guts of this
32:07guy he's gonna come and attack
32:09a guy and attack a guy is
32:10pulverizing first world title
32:13shot for the South American
32:15former South American junior
32:17featherweight champ Argentine
32:18bantamweight champ and he's
32:20legitimately the type of
32:21fighter not just because of
32:23his skills but because of
32:24his style nobody really wants
32:25to fight a fighter that's this
32:26awkward and that could be why
32:29he has no recognizable names
32:31on his ring record he is 42 and
32:331 with 23 that's a slip not
32:35enough now Carrera has been down
32:38two times in his career was for
32:40the record the other junior
32:45featherweight champs Eric
32:46Morales WBC that's who Barrera
32:48wants next WBA is Nesta Garza
32:52also of Mexico and the IVF is
32:54vacant Garza beat Enrique Sanchez
32:57this past December for the time
32:59by decision right maybe open up
33:02with that sloppy fighting he
33:05just can't he can't get a handle
33:07on this guy can't settle him down
33:09to regular fighting and
33:10therefore sloppy and therefore
33:12boring and buoy from the crowd
33:16a little bit of a hectic round
33:26first we'll get a shot at the low
33:27blow one on the mid thigh area I
33:30think yeah mid thigh crossing over
33:32towards south of the border in the
33:34bad place he's just so awkward to
33:37never never you're never sure
33:39where he's gonna land where he
33:41gets a little payback up against
33:42the ropes nice body shot that
33:44buckled we're in a little bit a
33:45lot of these shots are blocked
33:46but a lot of the damage is still
33:48being done right through the
33:49gloves all Barrera there on the
33:51ropes pretty much and then we'll
33:55have a combination of the slip
33:57and legs getting a little tangled
33:59we're in jumping around his foot
34:00right behind for errors and they
34:03just spent over each other's
34:04feet where winds up on the
34:05campus trip ready for round eight
34:14scheduled for twelve after the
34:16two losses to junior Jones
34:17Barrera learned to rest the body
34:18more take it a little slower
34:20fight only three times not five
34:22times a year as he normally did
34:24he's just trying to rest his body
34:28he's only twenty five it seems
34:29like he's been around for so
34:30long he seems older want a title
34:34at twenty one man and wife from
34:38Mexico Marco Antonio Barrera
34:41and a word about the
34:42efficiency of of our referee
34:44he's been out of sight he just
34:45circles way out he doesn't come
34:47in until he's needed he's doing
34:48a very nifty job of refereeing
34:50this fight that's a good move
34:53Sayreville New Jersey redness
35:08around the eyes of marine
35:09increasing more with every fight
35:11with every round as the jabs keep
35:14pouring in we're going down the
35:16middle a little more often out
35:17to the body there's another
35:18hook the last two or three shots
35:19were straight right hands to the
35:21body and I kind of think that
35:22that might have been a good idea
35:23going straight down the middle
35:24heavy body shots by barrera and
35:25then a straight left hand but in
35:27the middle of that mix was a low
35:29blow by barrera that's because he
35:31jumps in there in this wild thing
35:32while he's I mean that was as much
35:34marine's fault as it was barrera's
35:36barrera continues to stalk the awkward
35:47and elusive marine every once in a
35:50while marine throws a wild punch
35:52from out of nowhere at weird angles
35:54most of them being blocked by
35:56barrera and any of that land
35:58early aren't that strong you know
36:00you know one of the things that his
36:01corner told us when in that long
36:03and effusive praise on whether he's
36:05got a job that people hit him and
36:08nothing happens well I'm not sure
36:10I'm a couple of good shots here I
36:12think he has too but I'm not sure
36:13how anyone can hit him clean he's
36:14always twisting and turning and
36:15swerving and swirling it's hard to
36:18hit him with a good straight or
36:19in effect with a solid left hook
36:21well he's never been off his feet in
36:22forty three fights but again we don't
36:24know the level of competition we're
36:26we're not in Argentina I'm going to
36:27submit they changed it from bad cow
36:29to the Argentine tornado I mean is he
36:32twisting and turning and flagging
36:34flagging and gosh he was here he was
36:37there he was the scarlet pimple of
36:39argentina like a ghost gosh stand
36:42still fight twister would work for me
36:44too yeah oh yeah got those arms way
36:48down by his sides for red yeah but
36:50as soon as he comes up close look
36:51where they go another low blow all
36:53right great thank you but as soon as
36:55he comes up close boy up come those
36:58things you know it's like the
37:00drawbridge he pulls up the
37:01drawbridge on the fort when they
37:02come up close well hopefully this
37:06is the calm before the storm of our
37:08main event oh no the left hand by
37:13Barrera was way down south now that
37:16was really this near capacity crowd
37:19being lulled asleep waiting for the
37:24main event both the bridge well I
37:29thought this was going to be an
37:30explosive fight I really did
37:31because uh often what they tell me
37:33in the little I saw of marina I
37:35thought oh boy this is going to be a
37:37barn burner but it hasn't proved to
37:39be that way because I think there's
37:42two different levels of competition
37:44here one is very comfortable
37:49starting to turn to a small low blow
37:54festival we'll watch Barrera chasing
37:58Marin Marin comes out we don't get a
38:02shot that low blow it was a little bit
38:04prior to the angle there but Barrera
38:09gets another shot oh another one
38:10right that was a very good right
38:11uppercut it just went south of the
38:13world now about that one that was a
38:15double in one time one combination
38:17twice in one shot he got it ouch that's
38:21a hell of a way to slow him down
38:22though that was in Mexico that was a
38:23tropic of cancer that was everything
38:26was going well Marin Marin continues
38:28to fall behind one point at a time
38:30each round and he doesn't doesn't
38:32seem to have the power to win by
38:33knockout so we get around nine
38:36scheduled for twelve I truly can't
38:40think even if you're related to
38:41marine which round you would give
38:43tomorrow because he hasn't done
38:45anything but but receive and survive
38:48well let me see let me look at the
38:49judges no Marines there's a Davis
38:51motorized and Robert yeah we know
38:54when Lewis what Holyfield I think
38:55any of their last names had Holyfield
38:57on it either interesting point
38:59judge was still judges scoring was
39:01still very suspect I don't think
39:03they could get away with that he
39:05couldn't get away with that here
39:08now this is so clear-cut it's
39:10ridiculous
39:11going to get across the right just
39:21then as that ship went by if this
39:24were a basketball game they'd
39:25stop usually the other way around
39:28isn't it but I thought I'd throw
39:29that in well you're a basketball
39:39yes indeed I think that Barrera has
39:41bored himself to death I mean I
39:44think we're saying okay I'm tired
39:46of this can we go home now you
39:52you think Barrera though is somewhat
39:54frustrated because of the elusivity
39:56and awkward nature of his opponent
39:58tonight Pastor Marin he want I know
40:00he wants to please the crowd he
40:01wants to get this over with and do
40:03it in exciting fashion but it's tough
40:06well I guess the question now is
40:28where does Marco Antonio Barrera a
40:31two-time world champion gold from
40:32here he's got this one well in hand
40:35is it Eric Morales would you like to
40:38see that kind of a match well sure
40:39and it had certainly had to be more
40:40exciting than this or the even the
40:42Vasquez fight where the rumor was
40:43he was just so tough imagine the
40:45fight you could have there when
40:46somebody like Barrera named
40:48nicknamed the baby face assassin
40:50his people think that he might be
40:51too tough to deal with well how
40:53about tap I mean tap here with that
40:55non-stop energy and fierceness of
40:57tap here with this guy whoa what a
40:59fight that would be no that's good
41:00fight they would have they would
41:01have to be great fight three great
41:03fights in a row you can't you can't
41:04blame Barrera for this this is not
41:06Barrera's fault he's doing the best
41:08he can to settle this guy down a
41:09fight in a fight the other guys
41:11fighting a survival fight he can't
41:14possibly think he's winning this
41:15fight and nine rounds in the books
41:19he says everything's going good just
41:34keep going like you're doing they're
41:37satisfied they tell nothing on the
41:40cut when there is nothing now let's
41:45see what's happening with the losers
41:47corner he said as soon as he gets
41:52close to you throw something but be
41:57more be more animated be stronger
42:03marines trying to make some kind of
42:04an argument but they're not listening
42:05to him they're just saying hey throw
42:06something when you get close pretty
42:08good crowd on hand here at the
42:10Mark G. Edison arena at the Trump
42:12Taj Mahal on the boardwalk of
42:13Atlantic City New Jersey as the
42:14fans eagerly anticipate our main
42:17event coming up after this one
42:18Francois Botha versus Shannon
42:20Briggs this is round 10 of a very
42:23dull fight for the WBO junior
42:25featherweight title between Marco
42:27Antonio Barrera and the white and
42:29pass to Morin to the maroon you're
42:33just tuning in Morin a very elusive
42:37awkward unorthodox type fighter
42:39Herrera a relentless stalking
42:42pressure type fighter having
42:45difficulty because of the awkward
42:47style of Morin but rare has won
42:49every round convincing it's just
42:52not been an exciting fight because
42:54of the weird style of Morin who
42:56sometimes flings punches while
42:58both feet are in the air comes
42:59from all angles the other thing
43:01is he is just fighting survival
43:03he's going back he's just
43:04responding you know he's not
43:06doing what he's doing right here
43:07that's what he's got to do stop
43:09stand and fight but he didn't I
43:11mean when he stands and fights
43:12he gets blocked well Marin
43:15actually just landed with the
43:16left hook to the jaw he's got to
43:17do that he's getting a you know
43:20he's getting a little more
43:21comfortable on the inside he's
43:23landing with Barrera but Burrera
43:24is just too strong punches too
43:26well too purposeful and too
43:29accurate rim getting very brave
43:31there but has to answer to
43:32Barrera's hard punches with the
43:34body and head and the punches to
43:36the body are devastating I mean
43:38that's one thing the Mexican
43:39fighters have learned from
43:40Chavez and all those great
43:41ones that body pays off those
43:44hooks to the side ouch well
43:46Barrera's five fight knockout
43:48streak may be in jeopardy here
43:50because because of Morin style
43:52Barrera forty eight and two with
43:54thirty six knockouts we're in
43:55forty two and one with twenty
43:56three knockouts you don't want
43:58to have to catch him with a
43:59lucky punch the other guy's
44:00just not fighting for I mean it
44:02takes two people to get it going
44:06so you can land lucky and get a
44:07knockout some great fighters
44:09from Argentina over the years
44:11Victor Galindez comes to mind
44:12right off the bat the best I
44:13ever saw as months on Carlos
44:14Monza and Simon Simon said he
44:16seven I don't think I ever saw a
44:18middleweight that was that good
44:19during his time wow he's great
44:20fantastic we're in from Salta
44:21Argentina well it does appear as
44:23if he's just going to take this
44:25fight round after round and it
44:26was exactly the same fashion
44:27there's no sense of urgency or at
44:28least it wouldn't appear that
44:29he's going to just go for broke
44:30doesn't seem to have the power far
44:43too awkward enough his feet even
44:44hurt nevermind knock out this is
44:46the groundhog day of fights every
44:47round pretty much the same 20
44:50seconds to go in the ten that's
44:53the best sequence he's had all
44:54for yeah-and-and-and-and-the-
44:5520 seconds to go in the 10th.
44:58That's the best sequence he's had all the fight.
44:59Yeah. He came back.
45:01At least he fought. You know what I mean?
45:03Give him a shot.
45:06Miranda, every once in a while, he leads with his face.
45:09He just comes in wide open.
45:12And he just flails away, slapping punches.
45:16Can't go.
45:17Hmm.
45:22Well, we've got more on our main event.
45:24All right, here's Jim Briggs.
45:26All right, in Shannon Briggs' locker room with Emmanuel Stewart, the trainer for Shannon.
45:30How's the training gone for Shannon?
45:32He has not fought in eight months.
45:33The training's been good, but I think the most important thing is Shannon's attitude.
45:37He's decided that he wants to become a superstar fighter, and I think that nobody after I see
45:42among the young guys coming up and stopping.
45:44There was a time when this guy didn't like to fight and didn't want to fight.
45:47Have you changed that?
45:48Well, he's changed it himself.
45:49You know, I think I started to train him in November for his fight at last December.
45:54And from that point on, he's changed himself.
45:56The biggest change in Shannon Briggs has been Shannon has decided he wants to be a fighter,
46:00finally.
46:01Dangerous opponent tonight with both of them.
46:02Both is a very big test for him, particularly he presents everything that's a challenge to
46:07Shannon.
46:08He's a tough guy.
46:09He's an experienced guy.
46:10Only lost two fights to Mike Tyson and Michael Moore, and he's very confident that he can
46:13beat Shannon.
46:14I think Shannon Riggs, as he is now, is in a class by himself, all the other fighters
46:19coming up.
46:19Anyway, we look forward to the fight.
46:20The best news is we don't have to watch this one much longer.
46:23Back out to you, Steve.
46:24I think Emmanuel would agree with that.
46:26Thank you, Jim, and Manuel Stewart, who said that Shannon Briggs really became a man in
46:31his fight career in those later rounds against George Foreman, a controversial decision that
46:38when Shannon Briggs went, a lot of people thought Foreman won that fight on points.
46:41In any event, we mosey along here, round 11.
46:45Marin has been passed 10 rounds only once.
46:49Mosey might be too quick.
46:50Yeah, that might be too.
46:51What kind of fight do you think this is?
46:53Well, we're actually looking forward to a great interview to be the highlight.
46:58Jim's had two good interviews, and that was the best thing to happen in the whole fight.
47:06Big main event coming up between Francois Botha, the former champ.
47:10And that could be the exact opposite of this.
47:12And Shannon Briggs.
47:13That can be explosive.
47:15Let me tell you this.
47:16That can be explosive.
47:17It should be under the circumstances because of the fact that both fighters can't lose.
47:23With all that's hanging in the balance, Steve and Ferdy, and what heavyweights bring to
47:27the dance, it's got to be a great fight.
47:29It's desperation time for both.
47:30Well, one thing we know, we definitely know that the White Buffalo comes to fight.
47:35He's got a huge heart, so let's see what Briggs makes.
47:38And everything he said before the Tyson fight, well, a lot of people pooh-poohed it, came
47:43true except for getting the fight into the later rounds when he ate that punch.
47:47Yeah.
47:48He was going along with his game plan, and he was correct.
47:51He just happened to walk into the good right hand by Mike.
47:54That's all it took.
47:56But he had won all scorecards.
47:59And, of course, the Borough fight was something great.
48:01Well, listen.
48:02In the meantime, we have a fight no matter what the quality is going on right here.
48:06Yep, round 11 continues, not in raging fashion, but with a whimper.
48:16I wonder if, at this point, Barrera just says, well, let me just walk out the street.
48:22There's no way I'm going to knock this guy out.
48:23Let me just go ahead and work it on out.
48:25I mean, he's winning every round.
48:26No danger of losing.
48:27Let me just work.
48:30Is that the way it goes, Bobby?
48:32You were a fighter for 105 years.
48:34Yeah, pretty much.
48:37That's the flow of the game.
48:39Who's the most awkward, elusive fighter you ever fought?
48:41That reminds you.
48:42I'll tell you what.
48:43I fought somebody who's even more frustrating than this guy, Elijo Ben.
48:46Oh, yeah.
48:47I hit him.
48:48I started to knock him down.
48:49He grabbed me by the leg and climbed back up me.
48:52Then hit me.
48:53It's true.
48:54That's true.
48:55They disqualified him.
48:56He was nuts.
48:57And then he swung up Tony Perez and tried to hit him.
48:59He was incredibly awkward.
49:01So badly that they disqualified him.
49:02I worked with a lot of his fights, including when he won the title in Paris.
49:05He was an awkward guy and strange.
49:07He would just quit in the middle of the fights.
49:09I don't want to fight anymore.
49:10Then we'd have to convince him in the corner to go out and fight.
49:13No muss.
49:14Oh, yeah.
49:15But he was a champion.
49:16He was ready to give up.
49:18Thankfully, we're almost into the final round.
49:22All right.
49:23They're saying.
49:24All right.
49:25Now, he says give a good face to the audience now.
49:39Give it all you got now.
49:41Just make sure you're going to the side when he comes.
49:54He's going to come charging at you.
49:55Go laterally.
49:56Go laterally.
49:57Keep doing what you're doing, Mike.
49:59Go laterally.
50:00Well, Bernie Bobby Marin does have 23 knockouts in his 43 fights and he's going to need an
50:17improbable one here.
50:18I think more like impossible.
50:19He is so far behind.
50:21It's not funny.
50:22Round 12.
50:23Final round for the WBO Junior Featherweight Championship.
50:33So they are resigned to a full 12 rounds in the Herrera court.
50:38Going into the annals of NUE is one of the top all time boring fights.
50:43Even at best, Maureen is trying to win in some small spurts.
50:46He's not really laying it out there.
50:48You know, you've got to be in the game to win it.
50:50He's not really putting himself in game in the game in play.
50:53So you blame Maureen more for the style of fight as opposed to Barrera here?
50:58Well, when Barrera gets to be the aggressor, he backs his man up the corner, he's working.
51:02Maureen just stands there and covers up.
51:04There's no sense for Barrera to just shoot everything he has, use all his energy up and all his punches
51:09on arms and not look well later.
51:12So he's being more cautious than anything else here?
51:14Well, he has to harness his energy.
51:15He also doesn't want to make any big mistakes and run into anything silly.
51:21Unfortunately, though, it translates into a boring fight for the fans.
51:25I couldn't sleep for the past two days.
51:27If I had to taper this fight, I might have been able to sleep just well.
51:30There you go.
51:31If you were next in line for the guy, you mean?
51:32If you were going to fight him and you saw him on tape?
51:34Now he's doing a little fight.
51:36He'd have been doing this, jumping around like this.
51:38At least we had a fight.
51:39No, I just spent the last couple of days.
51:44Hey, you guys are missing the fight.
51:45It's all heated up into a tremendous struggle here.
51:48Comparatively speaking.
51:50We are changing your name to facetious Ferney.
51:53No, that's a comparison because at least he's coming forward.
51:56He's throwing both hands.
51:57He's putting on his good face for the audience for the last two rounds.
51:59That's what they told him.
52:00Put on a good face.
52:05Slapping left hook there right off the side of the head of Marin.
52:11No knockdowns in this fight.
52:16First, you've got to catch a guy to knock him down.
52:19See, he leans like that.
52:20It's almost impossible to hit a man cleanly.
52:22It leans so far and so awkward side to side, twisting, turning his head,
52:26switching feet, stepping around you.
52:29If I had to watch the tape of this guy and he was my next opponent,
52:32I wouldn't even want to fight him.
52:33That's what I, yeah.
52:34That's what I thought you were.
52:35He's just annoying.
52:36You can't look good with him, no matter how good your skills are.
52:38You still have to wonder, even with this wild and wacky style that Marin has,
52:52how did he win 42 fights?
52:54He still can be somewhat effective in his offerings.
52:57Maybe he was fighting guys that weren't, you know, just nowhere near the level of fighting
53:02the Barreras.
53:03Barreras has neutralized them and then giving them a whooping.
53:05That's the problem we get when we get these guys from, like, South America.
53:09And there's no way to really prove it.
53:11And that's it.
53:12This one mercifully comes to an end.
53:14For us and for you and for the fans here at the Mark G. Edis Arena.
53:30And there's no way to do it.
53:31A lull-a-thon at Atlantic City.
53:34Let's hope the main event is better.
53:37First fight was pretty good.
53:39But, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but,
53:45but, but could have used Angel Vazquez here tonight, huh?
53:48As we remind you once again, the main event coming up,
53:51former IBF heavyweight champion Francois Botha to take on number seven rated Shannon Briggs.
53:58South Africa versus Brooklyn.
54:00Big fight for both.
54:02Could set him up in line for a title fight or another fight for both of with Mike Tyson
54:07Mike Tyson or Briggs versus Tyson, a battle of Brooklyn.
54:10Would that be interesting?
54:12No matter what you think of Mike Tyson these days, style wise, skill wise,
54:19it would certainly create a ruckus in the world of boxing.
54:24Well, no question that Marco Antonio Brera has retained his title.
54:29Got a little cut along the bottom of the right eye there.
54:33But it was academic off a headbutt and Pastor Marin will go back to Argentina.
54:40No doubt 42 and two.
54:42This was his first world title shot.
54:44He did last.
54:45He's already being interviewed.
54:46He did last 12 rounds, but in boring fashion, very popular,
54:51obviously back in his homeland of Argentina.
54:54I'd be very curious as to if any of the judges actually gave him a round.
55:00I would be surprised if anybody did.
55:02Nothing surprises me.
55:03But we're not in Las Vegas.
55:04Yeah.
55:05We're not in Kansas anymore.
55:06Harry Davis, Ron Potterage, and Roberto Ramirez are the people scoring.
55:14Looks very frustrated.
55:15I mean, I don't understand the language, but you can just tell the frustration by Marco Antonio
55:21Barrera because of the style of Morin tonight.
55:25He wanted to put on a better show here in America.
55:27He just can't look good against every style.
55:29And this one clearly I think will be nothing short of impossible for any style to look too good
55:34against unless you caught him jumping in with some major shot and just starts.
55:39Yeah.
55:40The folks in the truck scored in the shutout.
55:41I'm surprised it took so long.
55:42But Jimmy Landon is junior with the final tally.
55:46I don't know why it took so long.
55:47That's weird.
55:48Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of boxing, we have a unanimous decision here.
55:53The score totals judges at ringside.
55:56John Potterage and Roberto Ramirez both score the bat 119 to 109.
56:02Harry Davis sees it at 120 to 108.
56:06All three in favor of the winner and still the WBO junior featherweight world champion, Marco Antonio Barrera.
56:18Well, no question about it.
56:20Pereira retains his title.
56:22He's 49 and two.
56:24And the pass to Marin drops the 42 and two.
56:27Even when they raise his hand, Steve, he was just shaking his head.
56:29No, I know he's not satisfied with how he dealt with his opponent.
56:33But I don't think he had much choice.
56:34OK.
56:35Up next, our main event, Botha versus Briggs.
56:39We go into the dressing rooms as both make final preparations.
56:43Botha on the left, Briggs on the right.
56:45Francois Botha feels Shannon Briggs has no heart.
56:49Briggs feels Botha is too slow.
56:51You recall, and Bobby made this point at one of our meetings.
56:55A slow George Foreman got a lot of punches in on Briggs, but Botha isn't as big as George Foreman.
57:00Briggs would really love to fight his fellow Brooklynite Mike Tyson in Tyson's second fight back being talked about for December.
57:07He's got to get past Botha first.
57:10Let's go to the fight doctor, Ferdi Pacheco in the ring.
57:13Campeón.
57:14Muy aburrida anoche.
57:15Porque es muy difícil.
57:16That was a boring night.
57:17Is that because he was hard?
57:18Sí, muy difícil.
57:19No, el rival salió un peleador.
57:20Ahora sí que él no es de los que llamados.
57:22Este asqueroso.
57:23Es cochinísimo.
57:24No sirve como para boxeador.
57:25I mean, he said he's nasty, he's dirty, he doesn't, he's not a boxer.
57:31He doesn't deserve the title.
57:32¿Y de aquí para adelante quién quiere pelear?
57:34Where do you want to fight?
57:35Pues todos no sabemos.
57:36Todos vamos a bajar a hablar con el señor Ricardo porque siento que hice una mala actuación aquí en Atlantic City.
57:40¿Con quién es el próximo?
57:41No sabemos.
57:42Vamos a hablar apenas después de esta pelea.
57:44He doesn't know he'll have to leave that up to the promoters.
57:47He has no plans right now, but he wants to stay in action.
57:50And back to Steve Albert.
57:52All right.
57:53Thanks very much, Ferdi.
57:54A sellout crowd, we're told, now.
57:565,150 on hand here.
57:58The online scoring.
57:59Again, no surprise.
58:01Marco Antonio Barrera, 12 to nothing.
