00:00Super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe defends his title against Will McIntyre.
00:04That's from Copenhagen, Denmark.
00:06Later tonight at 10 Eastern and Pacific.
00:11Steve, earlier this week Mike Tyson from Denmark said,
00:14I am in the best shape of my life since leaving prison.
00:18How can he be at the top of his game in that he weighed 239 and he hasn't fought in
00:22a year?
00:23Well, Mike Tyson has been so consistent his whole career with his weight.
00:26Even when there's been rumors that he's not in shape, he always weighs 223.
00:30I can't understand how 16 pounds added to his weight at his age
00:35when this is a guy who at his best was all about speed.
00:37I can't see how 16 pounds, I don't care how much muscle it is, how that's going to help him.
00:41I can't see it.
00:43Quickly with Nielsen, one loss, been down only once, but he drops his right hand.
00:48He's there to be hit.
00:50Does Tyson have to just rub out this guy, win explosively to merit what many people are already talking about,
00:55a fight with the winner of the Lewis-Rachman rematch?
00:58That's what's amazing.
00:59If Tyson wins, he'll win explosively.
01:01But what's truly amazing is that Tyson's prime was about 13 years ago,
01:05and he's one fight away, one win away from another shot at the heavyweight title.
01:09He's still the most compelling heavyweight in the world.
01:10You can't not watch him, even if he's not at his best anymore.
01:13Well, Steve, exactly.
01:14Unpredictable behavior from Mike Tyson.
01:16You heard what he said.
01:17I've got to chop my arms off to beat me in this one.
01:19And also the fact that he still is the most brutal puncher in boxing.
01:24So that's coming up later tonight here on Showtime.
01:27But a reminder, in the coming weeks, there's a lot more boxing to tell you about.
01:31Showbox, the new generation, returns in two weeks.
01:34October 27th at 5 Eastern and Pacific with our first trip to the U.K.
01:38And the headliner, Ricky Hatton, takes on Australian Justin Roussel in a 12-round junior welterweight bout.
01:44And local favorite Michael Gomez is up against Craig Daugherty in a 12-round bout for the British junior lightweight
01:51crown.
01:52Then, next month, the junior welterweight showdown of showdowns on Showtime.
01:58When IVF champion Zab Judah collides with WBA and WBC title holder Kostya Zhu.
02:05That's Saturday, November the 3rd here on Showtime.
02:08So don't miss it.
02:13And it's time for our main event and an anticipated look at an 18-year-old many say can't miss.
02:20Francisco Panchito Pajato, who's taking on Eleazar Contreras in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds.
02:27Steve, Pajato's tremendous slugging percentage could be viewed in a way as a double-edged sword.
02:32He's blown away guys, but in the process has the Lacey problem.
02:36He's never been more than three rounds.
02:38How would you chart his progress, and what do his handlers have to do to keep moving him in a
02:43title contention?
02:44Nick, I'm a believer that in a prospect's first 10 fights, you can't be too careful.
02:49You know, two of the members of the class of 2000 from the U.S. Olympic team have already suffered
02:54losses.
02:55Michael Bennett and Dante Craig, they both got stopped.
02:58So you can't be too careful with an 18-year-old.
02:59Another one of the class of 2001, Diaz, won a fight on Showtime about a month ago, got knocked down
03:06in his hometown.
03:07He was in tears in the ring after the ring.
03:09It's hard to forget.
03:11You can't forget that Pajato is 18 years old.
03:14Right.
03:14It's a fine line.
03:15The confidence builders, but after a while, you've really got to be tested for those things we talked about.
03:20Chin, heart, endurance, defense, the whole bit.
03:22Will it come as we look at, tonight, as we look at 18-year-old Conchito Bajato, who was born
03:27in Mexico, you'll see him with the American flag as he moved to Southern California when he was three years
03:31old.
03:32He fought for Mexico in the 2000 Olympics and lost in the second round at Sydney, but he had an
03:36astonishing amateur career, as we've noted.
03:39He's flattened everybody in the pros, reeling off six impressive, seven impressive wins since turning pro at the beginning of
03:45the year.
03:45Steve, take us behind that record and those numbers.
03:49Conchito Bajato staying busy.
03:51Bajato turned pro only nine months ago.
03:54This will be his eighth pro fight.
03:55That's the type of schedule every hot prospect should adhere to.
03:59Bajato needs rounds.
04:00Like Lacey, he hasn't fought past three rounds.
04:02Tonight's opponent, like his prior to, has been chosen for one reason, to extend Bajato a few rounds.
04:09And growing up, Bajato weighed 132 for his pro debut.
04:12Tonight, he's fighting for a youth title at junior welterweight.
04:16Given his age, it won't be long before he's a full-fledged 140-pounder.
04:20So we look at Panchito Bajato ready to go, and that's his little brother Angel in the corner.
04:25And we'll look at his opponent, Eleazar Contreras, 21.
04:29He jumped at the chance to get national exposure by fighting on network television here.
04:33Contreras has never fought east of Las Vegas during his three-year pro career.
04:3715-1 with one no contest.
04:39Steve, take us behind the numbers of Eleazar Contreras.
04:43Limited experience with 17 starts.
04:45It might seem that Contreras is far more experienced than Bajato.
04:49But despite having won a pair of minor titles, Contreras has fought mostly four- and six-round bouts.
04:54No advantage there.
04:55Questions answered.
04:56Contreras has proved the ability to overcome adversity.
04:59He's rebounded from low blows and knockdowns.
05:01Bajato has yet to prove he can do the same.
05:03Advantage Contreras.
05:05Minimal power.
05:06With only six KOs and 15 wins, Contreras isn't a big hitter.
05:09And that begs the question, if he can't punch hard enough to gain Bajato's respect,
05:13does he have any chance at all of surviving?
05:15So those are the keys to be looking and thinking about as you get ready to look at two young
05:20guys
05:20trying to fight their way to stardom here in Atlantic City.
05:23Panchito Bajato against Eleazar Contreras in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for 10 rounds.
05:28Let's go now to the center of the ring where the microphones descended on Dean Stone to make the introductions.
05:35Ladies and gentlemen, at this time, before we get to our main event of the afternoon,
05:41I ask for your attention for a solemn moment.
05:44The boxing fraternity lost one of its most beloved members as legendary trainer Eddie Futch
05:49passed away last week at the age of 90.
05:53Eddie was a husband, a father, a trainer, a friend, a mentor, and a world-class boxing strategist.
06:02He made those around him much better.
06:04He was wise and dignified and will be missed by all.
06:09And now we ask that you remain silent as the timekeeper tolls 10 in memory of Eddie Futch.
06:41He made those around him much better.
06:44He made those around him much better.
06:45May he rest in peace.
06:54Ladies and gentlemen, from the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City,

07:41and Steve Weisfeld.
07:43After the bell rings,
07:45your referee in charge of the action,
07:47Randy Newman.
07:49And now for all the boxing fans in attendance here at the Tropicana Casino and Resort Atlantic City,
07:54and the millions of viewers joining us on Showtime.
07:58Ladies and gentlemen,
07:59this is our Showbox main event of the evening.
08:02This is for the WBC Junior Welterweight Youth Championship.
08:10Introducing first,
08:11in the blue corner,
08:13wearing brown and gold,
08:14weighing in at 140 pounds,
08:16his professional record,
08:1815 victories,
08:19six coming by way of knockout,
08:21with one defeat,
08:22and one draw.
08:23Ladies and gentlemen,
08:25from Bakersfield, California,
08:28here is the Fakerbox Junior Welterweight Champion,
08:31Elizar Contreras Jr.
08:38This is on him across the ring,
08:40in the red corner,
08:41wearing white,
08:42weighs in at 140 pounds,
08:45his professional record,
08:47a perfect 7-0,
08:48with all seven victories coming by way of knockout.
08:51Ladies and gentlemen,
08:53Elijo de Guadalajara,
08:55Jalisco, Mexico,
08:57presenting the youngest member of the 2000 Mexican Olympic boxing team,
09:02Francisco Pacheta Pojado.
09:19Remember two things.
09:20Obey my commands,
09:21and most importantly,
09:22defend yourselves at all times.
09:24Now shake hands,
09:25or come out at the bell.
09:45Okay, as we see Bojado seriously looking to go,
09:50like he's ready to run the Indy 500,
09:52Steve,
09:52tail of the tape.
09:54Very little to choose from between these two young junior welterweights,
09:58almost identical,
10:00Contreras more pro experience,
10:01Bojado maybe a little better amateur experience.
10:03That's about it.
10:03Okay,
10:04both look champing at the bit very quickly.
10:05Same rules here.
10:06Can't be saved by the bell.
10:07Only the referee can stop the fight.
10:09Three knockdown rule not in effect in others.
10:11As we get ready to go,
10:12Randy Newman,
10:13our referee.
10:18It's Bojado in the white.
10:21Maroon and gold is Contreras,
10:23who said he will be cautious with that left hook early, Steve.
10:33Contreras already showing us more jabs than we saw on tape, huh?
10:35I'm with you, really.
10:37He said he's got to do that.
10:38He's got to discourage this guy somehow.
10:40Nobody has yet.
10:42Contreras says he's the more experienced guy.
10:44He's been in with other fighters,
10:45and that's going to carry him
10:46as he hopes to take Bojado deep.
10:57Contreras with a big right hand.
11:00A little short.
11:03Did he get stunned?
11:05Looks like Bojado is angry.
11:08The way Contreras reacted to that jab,
11:10I thought he was hurt.
11:11I think it's his eye.
11:12He's rubbing his eye.
11:13He's rubbing his eye.
11:14Right.
11:16Bojado moving with intent.
11:20Close the distance.
11:22Left hook,
11:23and that's problems for Bojado.
11:26Three.
11:27Oh!
11:30Seven.
11:31Seven.
11:32Eight.
11:32Nine.
11:33Ready to fight?
11:34Ready to fight?
11:35Here he goes.
11:36Contreras says he's ready to go,
11:37and here comes Bojado.
11:39Bojado, a very patient guy,
11:40but now he's got the kill.
11:42He senses to finish off the job, Steve,
11:44and he fight under control.
11:47Contreras, it's not that he's hurt.
11:48It's his eye.
11:49I think his right eye.
11:50That's why he went down that time.
11:52I guess he took a left hook on it
11:53after complaining previously in the round,
11:55and that's the problem.
11:56It's not that he's hurt,
11:57so Bojado has to be careful.
12:00Contreras backing up,
12:01but looking somewhat composed
12:03after being smoked by that left hook.
12:06Now it's Contreras battling back.
12:09Can he get out of round one?
12:11He's tasted Bojado's power already.
12:14Yeah, it's not in Contreras' best interest
12:16to trade shots with Bojado.
12:17He's a boxer,
12:19and he has to box.
12:20He has to counter with the right hand
12:21as he countered with the left hook there,
12:23but if they trade,
12:25advantage Bojado.
12:26There's a left that lands by Contreras,
12:28and he avoids a combination attempt
12:30from Bojado.
12:33There's the left and the right for Bojado.
12:38Bojado forever coming forward, Steve.
12:46There's the slug again.
12:48Contreras said in the beatings,
12:50when we spoke to him,
12:50he's going to give a lot of head movement,
12:52Bob, and weave under that left hook.
12:53That's a tall order
12:54when you've got the kind of speed Bojado has.
13:03Very composed, Conchito Bojado.
13:05Of course, he's been composed.
13:06You know, you've seen him.
13:08Who lefts as he cracks to the body there,
13:10first up and then down,
13:11so doubling the hook there,
13:12but it looks like
13:14Eleazar Contreras
13:15will escape round one.
13:27Let's see what they do with the eye here.
13:39He's seen him a little faster.
13:41Jab faster.
13:45You're a boxer.
13:46Just keep boxing.
13:47Our interpreter's Yoel Gutierrez.
13:50Nobody asked him how he fits.
13:51He'll stay.
13:54Here's the knockdown.
13:55It's kind of a weird knockdown.
13:58You see, it wasn't a knockdown.
14:00He went down voluntarily on one knee,
14:02rubbing his right eye.
14:03He did get hit by a left hook.
14:04You have to rule it a knockdown,
14:06but watch the delayed reaction after he gets hit.
14:08It's like, okay, I think I'll go down now.
14:10Still think that hurt.
14:11How'd you score that round?
14:1310-8.
14:13He went down from a punch.
14:17Here we go, round two.
14:19Eleazar Contreras is in the maroon and gold.
14:22The unbeaten Chito Bojato's in white.
14:29Combination by Contreras as he brings it to Bojato.
14:33Nothing wrong with his eye now.
14:35There was a jab in the first round that first bothered him,
14:37and he seems okay now.
14:42He better be at 100% against this guy.
14:45Maybe he didn't see the punch coming.
14:47Maybe he had something in his eye,
14:48but he does seem back.
14:49He didn't seem to address it in the corner.
14:54Bojato's backing up right now,
14:56but not moving his left.
15:00Looks like both fighters are looking to counterpunch right now.
15:03Bojato's moving left-hand there,
15:06but it's a lot of cracking back.
15:25See, Bojato told us it'd take a couple of minutes
15:28to figure out Contreras.
15:29Is he having any problems at all?
15:32He's having more problems.
15:33He's taking his time,
15:34but he's having more problems this round
15:35than he did in the first round.
15:36Seems to be.
15:39But again, patience,
15:41an uncanny attribute for an 18-year-old in the ring,
15:44but Bojato does possess that,
15:45so he has demonstrated he keeps his head,
15:48but he hasn't faced adversity so far in his young career.
16:00Trying to work in behind the jab.
16:02Smashes a right hand,
16:04and that left to the body
16:07has Contreras on all fours.
16:10Six, seven, eight, nine, three, go!
16:14Max just took the heart and soul out of him.
16:16Is he okay?
16:18Randy Newman pulling him up,
16:20and Francisco,
16:22Panchito, Panchito, Bojato,
16:25with a clear-cut, resounding victory in spoon.
16:29And it's the composure to hit to the head
16:32and then go down to the body.
16:35As we look at Bojato,
16:37his work is finished,
16:39and we look at Contreras and the doctor.
16:43Right in here.
16:45Your head's clear, right?
16:46It's fine.
16:46You get off.
16:51Back to the new junior well-awaited youth champion
16:56of the WBC.
16:57Two minutes.
16:59Panchito, Bojato.
17:01Let's look at the end, Steve.
17:03Beautiful combination upstairs,
17:05which leads to the hook to the ribs.
17:08Right there.
17:10You know, it wouldn't have been to the solar plexus
17:13because he wouldn't have reacted that way
17:16in terms of...
17:18Visually, he wouldn't have reacted that way
17:19if it was to the solar plexus,
17:21which is a great knockout spot.
17:22That was to the ribs,
17:23and that's why he crumbled like he did.
17:25Very impressed with Bojato, though,
17:26with that feinting there
17:27and then going with the lead right here
17:28to start it.
17:30There, and then the left.
17:32Measuring his guy again, Steve.
17:36It was a counterpunch.
17:38Contreras led with the right,
17:39left himself open,
17:40and that was some body shock.
17:42That's as impressive a knockout
17:43because of where he did it
17:44as any that he's scored so far.
17:47Ladies and gentlemen,
17:48the official time is two minutes even
17:50of round number two.
17:52Your winner by knockout and new
17:55WBC junior welterweight youth champion
17:59Tejualajara,
18:00Alisco, Mexico,
18:02Francisco,
18:06Pancito Bojato.
18:12So, that's quite a statement, Steve.
18:14You've seen his knockouts.
18:15The most impressive yet?
18:16I just love the fact that
18:18after hurting the guy to the head,
18:19he came downstairs,
18:21and boy, you don't see a lot of knockouts
18:23with a hook to the ribs
18:24in the front of the body like that.
18:26It was just an absolutely beautiful shot,
18:28and it shows that as composed as this kid is,
18:30he just has natural power.
18:32His hands move,
18:33and they flow beautifully.
18:34He's got great hand speed.
18:35You put that all together,
18:36and you have a tremendous young knockout assassin.
18:38A record 6-0,
18:40six KOs.
18:41Tim Smith is with Pancito Bojato now.
18:44Thank you very much, Nick.
18:46Another explosive performance by Pancito Bojato.
18:50Now, you came in against a guy who had more fights,
18:53more experience.
18:54This was supposed to be a fight
18:56where you're supposed to get some work in.
18:58What happened?
18:59Well, I mean,
19:00Contreras was a good opponent.
19:01He's a good fighter.
19:02He could tell on his record.
19:03I came in in great shape.
19:05I was a little off by the ring,
19:06but I tried to stay composed,
19:09and my fight plan came out,
19:12and I came out with the victory.
19:14Can you sort of take us through the knockdown
19:17and sort of look at what you were doing
19:20and how you set it up?
19:22Okay.
19:23The first knockdown,
19:24I was just trying to get my rhythm in.
19:25I was a little cold.
19:27I was just trying to set him up.
19:28And I just saw the left came in
19:31and just finished it.
19:33They looked like a shot right to the ribs.
19:37Yeah, it was a body shot.
19:39I was going for a body shot,
19:40and I was going to come back
19:41with a counterpunch on top.
19:43And it just came out,
19:44wow, thanks to my corner.
19:46Now, you're fighting at 140 pounds.
19:49Are you comfortable at this weight?
19:51I feel good at 140.
19:52Right now, we're just experimenting
19:54in what weight class am I going to stay.
19:56I want to go down to 135.
19:58Maybe stay at 140.
20:00It all depends.
20:01So it didn't hurt your speed
20:02or your power at all to move up?
20:04No, actually, I felt stronger.
20:06I do feel faster.
20:08Like I said, I was trying to get my rhythm
20:10with the ring.
20:10I felt a little heavy.
20:12But we'll get used to it,
20:13and by experience,
20:15I'll try to overcome that.
20:16Now, are you getting at all frustrated
20:18that the fights aren't going longer?
20:19I know you don't want them to go any longer
20:21than they actually have to,
20:22but you're in the gym every day.
20:25You're working on things.
20:26You're not getting an opportunity
20:27to display many of the things
20:29that you're working on.
20:30Are you getting frustrated
20:31by not being able to put in some rounds here?
20:34No, I'm not getting frustrated.
20:35I believe that time will come,
20:37and as the fighters get,
20:39the opponents get harder for me,
20:41then I'll try to do my best I can,
20:44and that way I can get more experience.
20:45For right now,
20:46I'm working hard at the gym.
20:48I do want to go a couple more rounds
20:50so I can get more experience,
20:51but it's all with time, I think.
20:54Is it going to be a case for you
20:55of just volume, fighting guys,
20:58looking at different styles,
20:59no matter what the outcome
21:00of the fight is going to be?
21:01I believe so.
21:02I mean, at the gym,
21:04I spar with three different guys,
21:06sometimes four,
21:06with all different styles
21:07from different weight classes,
21:09so it's helping me out a lot.
21:11The training that I've been having
21:12at the gym,
21:13and especially with Alfonso in my corner,
21:15Clemente, Medina, and Joe.
21:16So I'm just happy to be here.
21:19I've got a great team with many events,
21:21and we just have a good relationship.
21:24Okay, congratulations, Panchito,
21:26and continued success to you.
21:28Nick?
21:28And once again,
21:29this was an explosive 45 minutes or so
21:32here on Showbox.
21:33We talked about these two hard-hitting guys
21:36with KO power.
21:37They proved it again tonight, Steve.
21:39You want to see these guys fight.
21:41You want to see them develop.
21:43Were these guys true tests tonight?
21:45Well, they both tried.
21:47Contreras gave Bojato a little trouble briefly,
21:49but the power, Nick,
21:50is such in both the cases of Lacey and Bojato
21:53that when they land cleanly,
21:55the fight's over.
21:55Yeah, it makes them riveting guys to watch,
21:57and once again,
21:58we talked about climbing the ladder
21:59and main events,
22:01the promoter and such,
22:02having to get better competition.
22:04It's a tall order
22:05to find somebody
22:06who wants to fight these guys
22:07based on the exposure
22:08if they're watching here today once again.
22:11I want to tell you
22:12that everybody, of course,
22:14felt the tragedy
22:14just that hit the Pentagon
22:16and, of course,
22:17the Twin Towers
22:18and all of New York City last month,
22:20but the attacks since then,
22:22we've also seen
22:23the tremendous compassion
22:25of the American people collectively, Steve.
22:28There was some wonderful news
22:29last week in New York,
22:30and you were at the forefront
22:32at Gallagher's Steakhouse
22:33in New York City.
22:34Tell us about it.
22:35Well, I wanted to do something
22:38for New York City,
22:39and what I'm doing is
22:40I'm running a fundraiser
22:42at Gleason's Gym
22:43on Wednesday, November 7.
22:44People want information,
22:45they can get it by calling Gleason's.
22:47What I have is all these great fighters,
22:49former New York City fighters,
22:50Vito Antifermo,
22:51Mustafa Hampshire,
22:52Bobby Ches,
22:53Showtime's own,
22:54Jerry Cooney, etc.
22:55Gleason's is giving us the gym.
22:57These guys will box each other
22:58in exhibition bouts for fun.
23:01100% of the proceeds
23:02will go to the Twin Towers Fund,
23:04and a quick note,
23:06one of the judges
23:06in the main event,
23:07Barbara Perez,
23:08who's the wife of Tony Perez,
23:10veteran referee,
23:11she lost her brother,
23:12who was a firefighter,
23:13Robert Hamilton,
23:14in the Twin Towers disaster.
23:15So it hits home in boxing, too,
23:17and this is New York boxing's
23:18way of giving something back.
23:19Yeah, I think these fighters,
23:20once again,
23:20it's a demonstration
23:21of the wonderful fraternity
23:23that boxing can be.
23:24So once again,
23:25your time, your money,
23:26your energies,
23:27your emotions
23:28couldn't be better spent.
23:29Counterpunch,
23:30the benefits,
23:31September 7th
23:31in Brooklyn, New York.
23:33Again, at the top of the show,
23:35we touched on Eddie Futch.
23:37He is gone.
23:38A rich, full, long life,
23:40but the void is being felt.
23:42He was a gentle,
23:43permanent reality
23:44to anybody in the fight game, Steve.
23:46Nick, as you know Eddie
23:48as well as I did,
23:49and I feel very fortunate.
23:50He's the kind of guy
23:51you just felt fortunate
23:52to get to know.
23:53Boxing is not filled
23:54with Eddie Futch,
23:55as it would be nice
23:56if it were,
23:56but it's not.
23:57Eddie was compassionate,
23:58full of integrity.
23:59All the great qualities
24:00you talk about,
24:01that has nothing to do
24:01with the fact
24:02that he's probably
24:02the greatest trainer
24:04in boxing history.
24:05He lived a very full life.
24:06He lived to be 90,
24:07and he saw his 90th birthday.
24:09I'm glad for that,
24:10but just a fantastic guy.
24:12How many people
24:12could say that,
24:13you know,
24:13when they check out
24:14that they loved
24:14what they did
24:15throughout their life,
24:16and they were so good at it?
24:18Eddie Futch,
24:19the genuine article.
24:20Speaking of people
24:21with credentials already,
24:2318-year-old Francisco
24:25Bahato and Jeff Lacey.
24:26Let's recap the night
24:27once again,
24:28starting with Lacey here.
24:29Three-round knockout
24:30over Bawa.
24:31He fought a tree,
24:32six-foot-three opponent.
24:33He had no trouble
24:34chopping him down.
24:35Lacey,
24:36tremendous left hook
24:37for the win.
24:39And there.
24:40Oh!
24:41We see it.
24:42Still hurts,
24:42doesn't it?
24:43Yes.
24:44Jeff Lacey.
24:46Bigger,
24:46better things to come even.
24:48How much better can you get?
24:49We'll see as he's tested.
24:50Bahato here with the combinations
24:53and the beginning of the end
24:54for Contreras.
24:55Well,
24:55if Lacey landed
24:57the perfect shot
24:57to the chin,
24:58Bahato landed.
25:00The perfect shot
25:00to the body.
25:02Another tremendous knockout
25:03for this eighth.
25:04He's only 18, Nick.
25:05I can't believe it.
