An industry expert breaks down the key advantages of the Roblox platform, from its frictionless, free-to-play model to its dynamic top charts, explaining why the company is paying out $1.5 billion to its developers.
Transcript
00:00Well, first of all, I'll give you the top line number, 1.5 billion paid out to devs last year.
00:05One thing that Roblox has going for it is that there is some friction to downloading a Steam game, right?
00:11You download, you install, in most cases you're paying up front, whereas on Roblox you're typically not paying up front,
00:17so it is free to play.
00:18But more importantly, there's no install, you just press play and you're in.
00:22And so I think that advantages people that you haven't heard of, right?
00:25You don't have to go read that it's overwhelmingly positive or mostly positive.
00:29You're just like, I'll try it, right?
00:31I think the other thing to point out in addition to what we said already is that the top charts
00:36on Roblox are very dynamic, right?
00:38Different games are, you know, hopping in and out of there, and that expresses some of the dynamism of the
00:43platform as well.
00:44So, you know, yes, the very top games, you know, make a lot of the money, but the very top
00:48games are different all the time.
00:50And you see things like Steal of Brain Rot just shooting up there in a matter of six weeks, right?
00:54So it's big and it's dynamic and it's more democratic, I would say, than rival platforms.
