00:00An AI engine is said to improve video games by upscaling their graphics,
00:05but it's been met with fierce pushback from gamers and industry employees.
00:09NVIDIA says its DLSS 5 filter makes games photorealistic. Critics say it makes the
00:15characters look lifeless and changes the work of the original artists without their permission.
00:20The row has shone a spotlight on the impact of AI on the video games industry.
00:24AI is already accelerating job loss and cheapening the work of developers at studios,
00:29said Wired. Between 2022 and the end of 2025, about 45,000 people were laid off from gaming jobs.
00:37Another 10,000 roles are expected to be cut this year. 52% of developers think generative AI is
00:43having a negative impact on the sector. According to the 2026 State of the Game Industry Survey,
00:49only 7% think the impact has been positive. But in the boardrooms of the gaming industry,
00:55the attitude towards AI integration is more positive. The technology is ultimately there
01:00to empower human creators to create stuff more efficiently rather than replace them,
01:05said Tim Sweeney, the founder and CEO of the studio behind Fortnite.
01:09But since the release of more games with AI-generated art, characters and dialogue,
01:14there has been aggressive pushback from consumers, said IGN. And a growing number of studios are
01:20backtracking. Gamers worry that the technology will lead to low-quality games filled with AI slop,
01:26as well as reduced work for artists and voice actors.
