00:00:08here to look ahead to tonight's episode of AEW Dynamite.

00:00:38There is a unbelievable rematch potential situation going on,
00:00:46and there's a bit of episodic friggin' TV, a bit of mystery,
00:00:50a bit of like, I wonder if they'll do it throughout the night
00:00:52or if that's not unlike, that's just like completely unlike Tony Khan.
00:00:57The idea that Mark Briscoe and MGF are picking their respective teams ahead of Forbidden Doe.
00:01:03Will they drip-feed that information throughout the night is a little hootsky of sorts.
00:01:06I doubt it, but should they?

00:01:10Yeah, last week's Dynamite being rubbish.

00:01:13Because I've remembered that this is kind of consistent with this time of year.

00:01:17A history of, like, sort of janky Forbidden Door builds and some matches that deliver on the night.
00:01:23Oh, like Forbidden Door 2022 is one of the best nights in wrestling history.
00:01:26What an unbelievable over-delivery.

00:01:50Even though, ultimately, we got there in the end with one of my favorite matches ever.
00:01:56ZSJ Danielson won at WrestleDream 2023, I believe it were.
00:02:01But, obviously, it could not happen at Forbidden Door 2022.
00:02:04And they debuted Claudio Castagnoli as the replacement.
00:02:08Two elements of that build really, really, really annoyed me.
00:02:13And this is completely just by-the-by rant.
00:02:18One is that they did this weird segment where I was like, well, Brian Danielson's going to address his status
00:02:24ahead of Forbidden Door on Dynamite this week.
00:02:26And, like, the false hope that that created is, I can't do it.
00:02:31I was like, I can't f***ing tell me that on the Monday.
00:02:33Just rip the Band-Aid off.
00:02:34I'm even more depressed now.
00:02:36This could have been an email.
00:02:37Yeah, this could have been.
00:02:37I had the dread, and now I've got the news.

00:02:43That would have been fantastic.

00:02:49Secondably, I recall that because it was like they were building blood and guts at the same time as Forbidden

00:02:56and they just completely nuked the idea of, like, this match selling itself as, like, the ultimate technical savage dream

00:03:03where I remember as well, Danielson was like, you know, they want to talk about who the best wrestler in
00:03:07the world is,
00:03:07and Zach wants to prove that he's the best technical wrestler above me.
00:03:11I just want to crush this trick here.
00:03:13I was like, what a badass line that was.
00:03:15So I thought, that's the way you build it.
00:03:17No, originally, the idea was, well, the reason why this match is happening, because there always has to be a
00:03:22reason.

00:03:43This match is the ultimate, sells itself.
00:03:46There was an award, and I know it's Observer stuff, but the AEW doesn't shy away from this.
00:03:51There was an award for best technical wrestler that was won so often by Bryan Danielson that it became the
00:04:00Bryan Danielson Award.
00:04:02Subsequent to his retirement, come move to WWE,
00:04:06Zack Sabre Jr. almost won as many Danielson Awards as Danielson.
00:04:11Does that not tell you the story of just how neck and neck they were in the race for the
00:04:16best ever at this particular thing?
00:04:18Why does Chris Jericho have to do bounty s***?
00:04:21I was livid at that.
00:04:23But we got the match, and it all worked out in the end.
00:04:26Speaking of which, I cannot wait for the day.
00:04:28And you'd like to think it would be an AEW.

00:04:33But that triple threat that we've kind of fantasy booked for years, again, in the spirit of this, like, Danielson

00:04:40that is consensus definitive, best of the best of the best in that one category.

00:06:27But, in all likelihood, he will re-sign with AEW.
00:06:32This has led to a further conversation about whether or not he'd be allowed in WWE.
00:06:35Because that's where CM Punk is.
00:06:38He's a professional.
00:06:39He'll happily work with everybody.
00:06:40Indeed.
00:06:41He will not excommunicate people from his show over which he has creative control.
00:06:45Everyone knows that.

00:06:47But what he's actually said is 100% true when he's working for a boss he respects.

00:08:03I don't think a boy and his dinosaur has legs in WWE anymore, personally.

00:08:11Meanwhile, in AEW, like, he's done everything, and yet, in spite of that, remains that kind of weird, friendly with
00:08:21the fans over.

00:08:25He'll never do more or less than he's already done, ever, I don't think.

00:08:30We've seen the floor and the ceiling with Jack Perry.

00:08:36I mean, yeah, I could see why the conversation would be in place, but I don't think WWE would kind
00:08:41of be able to make anything different with him either.
00:08:42I don't think WWE would be able to get anything out of him, considering if you look at the recent
00:08:47raft of jumps, it is absolutely pathetic.

00:08:53Like, they want to be careful signing Blake Monroe.
00:08:54They want to be careful, because, like, it's all a narrative game, ultimately, WWE will remain, and you'll be happy
00:09:01to know this handful of the market leader forever and ever more.
00:09:03But as an optics battle, as a momentum, it's going to be a one and two forever.

00:09:12It's going to be a one and two forever, so it's ultimately, at this point, just a game of optics,
00:09:16and who, which side, which tribe has got the more credible argument as to which is the better show,
00:09:21and have bragging rights over, well, I follow the best company, oh, well, actually, it's 2023, take care, times have
00:09:27changed.
00:09:27Well, now it's 2026, and, you know, and then 2029, I'm sure it'll be very different.
00:09:33But, you know, that's how these things work.
00:09:35But in terms of the optics battle and who gets to brag, at the minute, it's the AEW fans, like,
00:09:40the product has been much, much better, much more exciting.
00:09:43There's been genuine growth.
00:09:45It's levels, obviously.
00:09:47They'll never grow at WWE's level, but WWE is in decline from where it was in 2023, and AEW is
00:09:53improving upon where it was in that particular year.
00:09:56In terms of bragging rights and optics and how much stock you put in it, if I'm Triple H, I'm
00:10:02cooling it on these jumps because he's making a tit of himself, quite frankly,
00:10:07in terms of, like, dangling the carrot.
00:10:10Everyone wants to come to WWE in the end.

00:10:13Be the star that you always meant to be.
00:10:14You get out of those, get away from those yahoo's down in Jacksonville and come to the big time.

00:11:14That run will never, ever get good.

00:11:31She had this incredible story-specific run.
00:11:35Like, a proper classic territory-style run.

00:11:39The run begins and ends with that story, which happens to be one of the very best, if not the
00:11:45best of the decade.
00:11:46Not for me, but in some people's eyes.
00:11:48She peeks at the finish.
00:11:50It is the perfect run.
00:11:53So much so that I, you know, I'm not a goldfish.
00:11:56I don't have a photographic memory, but I've got a decent one when it comes to AEW.
00:12:00There were weeks where it wasn't good, but no one remembers that.
00:12:03No one remembers that, because it was just mostly all killer knee filler.
00:12:07She goes out on top in one of the best AEW matches ever.
00:12:11Certainly one of the most iconic.
00:12:13Goes to WWE and does nothing.
00:12:15She could have went to WWE and had a good run, and it would still pale in comparison.
00:12:19She's had a not good run, and it's an embarrassment to WWE and Paula Vec.
00:12:24And these things add up to the optics when that AEW is currently enjoying.
00:12:28So, away from the specific circumstances of would WWE go for Jack Perry?
00:12:33Would Jack Perry work in WWE?
00:12:35Would it be a problem for CM Punk?
00:12:36No, it couldn't be, because, you know, he's not the be-all and end-all there.
00:12:40If I'm Triple H, I'm not signing anyone from AEW, because it is just adding to this narrative
00:12:47that WWE is not doing brilliantly right now.
00:12:51The only, again, I don't even think it's power that CM Punk would exert here,
00:12:54is, you know, like when it used to be sort of like Brian Clough going around a player's house
00:12:59and telling their mom, oh, look, I'm going to sort him out of the house.
00:13:02Now it's probably like moving the family in and making sure the kids are at a good school
00:13:06as part of the little details you don't necessarily think about when you're trying to sign a football or whatever.

00:52:39mind works the long beach match between
00:52:42mercedes money and hazuki was
00:52:44unbelievable it was one of like i
00:52:46campaign for short matches all the time
00:52:48this because i'm just bored of long
00:52:50matches that nakedly nakedly reach for
00:52:54epic and great and it's mandatory minimum
00:52:57match length that makes a classic and so
00:53:00many people are just filling their time
00:53:02with tropes and moves and finisher
00:53:05kickouts and all these devices that you
00:53:07can use to fool melter and i'm sorry i
00:53:10know i sound like rip rogers but it's
00:53:11becoming true
00:53:13into giving you a high score i find it so
00:53:17unimaginative and cynical
00:53:20this 27 minute i think it was between
00:53:22money and hazuki was almost perfectly
00:53:26worked i wish there was more people
00:53:27there
00:53:29in that the longer it went they created
00:53:32this idea and developed it in the story
00:53:35of oh my god this is it this is the night
00:53:37she loses
00:53:38like this is the water like she got in
00:53:41the deep water
00:53:41yeah phrase it's thrown around but this

00:53:44she's trapped it like the amount of times

00:54:01it's a bit magical actually this first

00:54:03although i don't know if it was the
00:54:04second but the the long beach meeting
00:54:05between the two is a little bit of
00:54:07pro wrestling magic
00:54:07and if you've been listening to these
00:54:09podcasts for long enough
00:54:11you'll know that we're a little bit
00:54:12too f***ing real
00:54:14i maintain
00:54:15that i think the general consensus is
00:54:18that mercedes money
00:54:19got there in the end at the peak of
00:54:21her aew run before the hiatus of
00:54:24oh she finally was kind of worth the
00:54:27money
00:54:27uh paper she was printed on
00:54:29and she became the the money that
00:54:31everyone thought she was going to be
00:54:33when she immediately jumped shipped
00:54:34from wwe
00:54:36and uh you know we got there in the
00:54:38end with money and like i can't deny
00:54:40the all in texas build and match and
00:54:42it was great you don't really do that
00:54:43if your aura isn't completely restored
00:54:46part of me thinks that it was a bit
00:54:49overblown
00:54:50and if you go back and watch some of
00:54:52those 22 minute pay-per-view matches
00:54:54that she was having
00:54:55all of them were like five minutes
00:54:57too long
00:54:57and i don't know if we ever saw
00:55:00that idea of mercedes money as the
00:55:02ultimate dream match long match
00:55:05ace figure champion
00:55:07who was just undeniably great
00:55:09i think some of it was all a bit too
00:55:12long in the tooth and
00:55:13like tell don't show with it
00:55:15that match against
00:55:17izuki in long beach was like that's it
00:55:19she is the real deal she is everything
00:55:21she said she was
00:55:22if only truly for two nights maybe
00:55:24all in texas and that one
00:55:27all of which is to say
00:55:29that i'm
00:55:29don't want to get too excited about
00:55:31this because it won't be the same
00:55:32it's not getting 27 minutes
00:55:34they haven't done enough to tell you
00:55:36oh my god this is a repeat of
00:55:38this mercedes money thing you think
00:55:39she's got a
00:55:41free ticket at wembley stadium do not
00:55:43count on it she has been pushed to the
00:55:45limit
00:55:45by this opponent before
00:55:47maybe they haven't had the luxury of
00:55:49doing it because they haven't had
00:55:50the time or whatever
00:55:51i really hope they stress that i would
00:55:53love to see this go on late
00:55:55i would quite like to see this main
00:55:56event
00:55:57um and push throughout the united
00:55:59you've got the you've got the
00:55:59footage you've got the work of
00:56:00relationship show the clips of that
00:56:02match
00:56:03like a near fall after every match
00:56:05like this is where she almost got
00:56:07this could happen again
00:56:07play on that tell people do the
00:56:10spots again subvert them make the
00:56:12spot where it looked like mercedes
00:56:14money was going to lose look like
00:56:15oh she's not going to get it this
00:56:16time oh my god she's got it one
00:56:17two or remind people of the match
00:56:19it was something i don't think
00:56:21this will go 40 minutes and it'll
00:56:23feel a bit more matter of fact i
00:56:24think um the best possible version
00:56:27of this match we've seen it it was
00:56:28awesome i don't know if they can
00:56:30replicate the magic and i would put
00:56:32that on aew's promotional floors way
00:56:36more than the wrestlers involved
00:56:37yeah
00:56:38mercedes money wins the idea is if they
00:56:40can make you think otherwise to the
00:56:43extent that they did a couple of
00:56:44years ago it will be one of the best
00:56:46matches of the year in aew they have
00:56:48had their moments aew in elevating
00:56:51the status of these owen matches
00:56:52um the uh mariah may willow nightingale
00:56:58one springs to mind before the big
00:56:59tony storm angle like it's forgotten
00:57:01because of that huge angle but it was
00:57:02a really good match and it was in the
00:57:03main event spot as well um and it felt
00:57:06like at the time two of the hottest
00:57:07properties having the best possible
00:57:08match they could have making the best
00:57:10the book in this is a bit of that here
00:57:11for me i'm not like i'm also with
00:57:14sidge i think on the mercedes money run
00:57:17more good than great and good is fine
00:57:19but often you're still waiting for a
00:57:22little bit more are you wishing that
00:57:23oh
00:57:24that they haven't passed the peak
00:57:25more it's actually passing the peak
00:57:27more than it is wanting extra it's
00:57:29like are you you're doing too much
00:57:31like not slow it down cut it out like
00:57:34but in this is the case where and you
00:57:36kind of wish she hadn't on those some
00:57:37of those pay-per-view ones because now
