00:00:33by michael sidgwick to review last night's dynamite michael hamfler suffering from a bit of world cup

00:00:38fever no he's just not very well today that's all uh but what do you make of last night's show

00:00:42uh the

00:00:44bad news i guess is that this was a little bit this is a little bit non-more tony con

00:00:51in the way that

00:00:52he built matches ahead of the pay-per-view here like excess too much of a good thing like very

00:00:59very very wrestling heavy um but some of the action was stellar um and there was a certain

00:01:07backstage skit that got me very excited about a development that i've been really really paying

00:01:11attention to and really really wanting to see happen so that's kind of the bad news where it

00:01:16was a better than better than most finamites finamite the good news is it's coming home there's always

00:01:23that there's always that yeah yeah i was in a very good mood i did say my mood on this

00:01:30podcast

00:01:31today was going to be dictated by england's result last night so best dynamite ever for me

00:01:37um uh can we just have a little soccer tangent i think i think for once it merits it you

00:01:42know

00:01:42what's going to happen here if you want just to just dive straight into aw dynamite you can skip

00:01:46forward a couple of minutes but after that performance it does merit

00:01:54soccer tangent where to begin um i was so impressed by the boys last night so impressed because right

00:02:02you kind of want to grow into a tournament you kind of want to get tested a little bit early

00:02:07um you want to grind out results anyway anyhow you don't want to get off to a flyer realistically

00:02:13i mean like if you are the unqualified best team in the goddamn world and you carry that aura about

00:02:20you you don't necessarily care i won 7-0 with spaff too early here because you've got that confidence

00:02:26we are teetering towards having that mentality and having that belief i liked that we got a tough test

00:02:35it basically went one nil us one one two one us two two three two four two so we grew

00:02:42into

00:02:42the game we recovered we didn't let the setbacks get us down and we could have scored more

00:02:47that's the thing we could have quite frankly blew them away in that second half it could have been

00:02:51six two seven two there was a there was like two ultra chaotic two minute spells where we should have

00:02:58scored four in like four minutes or whatever um so i'm really i'm still a little bit

00:03:05about the defense um i don't want any knee-jerk reactions though considering we've got the three

00:03:10points that in this really flawed um world cup format driven by greed is probably enough already

00:03:18um so the fact that we've got three on the board the first time of asking means i would give

00:03:25stones

00:03:25one more game just to grow into it a little bit more but i don't think the back line worked

00:03:30to

00:03:30tremendous effect and we got exposed we kind of bricked it early playing tiki taker on the six yard line

00:03:37i'm not sure what that was but i think croatia's approach took us by surprise because every bit

00:03:44of chat about croatia going into the cup and in that game was they've got experience they have got some

00:03:50extremely tenured players but my god some of them are pushing 40 it's an aging savvy side that was the

00:03:58narrative my god they're pressing they spooked us they spooked us with that pressing because it just felt

00:04:05like there was so much fitter and stronger than the narrative suggested and i think we didn't know

00:04:10really how to cope with that but we learned in the in the throes of the game how to cope

00:04:15with that and

00:04:15ultimately they punched themselves out it looked like the the football had left mod rich after all

00:04:20these years yeah what a career but he got hooked what was on like 50 odd minutes he can't cope

00:04:25he is

00:04:25done here um did see a meme that said when it was uh moderich replaced replaced by cover chich and

00:04:34it

00:04:34said old man's son is also old man yeah i um so they tired themselves out bless them punch themselves

00:04:42out and then from there like some of the passing play the intensity like just destroying i know it's an

00:04:49air-conditioned stadium or whatever but it just proved that like you've got an incredibly athletic

00:04:54young squad full of runners so we just played our game whether it was in europe or the states um

00:05:00didn't even use dan burn didn't use dan burn keeping him for a set piece rainy day um i i'm

00:05:07still not

00:05:08completely convinced it's coming home but i've let myself believe it was as well like it's one of

00:05:13those ones you can you are allowed to get very carried away i said in one of my group chats

00:05:19as well

00:05:19that was i don't know did i message you saying i can't deal with this entertainment because at that

00:05:24point it was still in the balance yeah i'm not sure about this back and forth entertainment something

00:05:29like that um but in the end it all worked out i guess it was the most fun and by

00:05:33that i mean really

00:05:34exhilarating and rewarding but at the same time tense and anxious in a way that i've not seen since

00:05:411996 like we've either just turned up individual quality as one as a game but we've been crap as a

00:05:49team collective or we've just been a really good unit but not really exciting um this was we're

00:05:55really good and we're playing dramatic entertaining free-flowing football that bit is on the arse twice

00:06:02um it's coming home i enjoyed this so much uh i re-watched it whilst there was a 22 minute

00:06:07deathriders match going on during a w dynamite that's unprofessional needs must um but let's

00:06:14start the beginning of dynamite um because we start with the world that was the soccer tangent we'll try

00:06:22we'll try not bang on about it too much but i'm gonna try not to bang on about the fact

00:06:25that

00:06:25liverpool are taking the piss can't shop in two markets last time england won 4-2 at a world cup

00:06:31i can't remember what year that was actually coincidence i think not well they do this every

00:06:37year they find some weird stuff the last time blackburn rovers finished fourth actually was the

00:06:421966 and look what's happened or something i don't think those two things correlate but i'll take it

00:06:47um but yes we start with the world champion maxwell jacob friedman uh he's there backstage with

00:06:54and almost the entire dcf um but he's talking about his triple b uh he says he doesn't like but

00:07:02he

00:07:02respects kevin knight um because he's not afraid to stab people in the back to get ahead which is

00:07:07admirable in max's eyes um whilst looking at kyle fletcher he says you're clearly the most talented

00:07:16prospect in wrestling to kevin knight funny uh he talks about swerve saying if you want power win the

00:07:22owing come take the title if not go swerve off a bridge um but he prays that uh will osprey

00:07:27makes

00:07:27it to wembley so he can break his neck goes to mention hangman page as we all know i've got

00:07:33more

00:07:33chance of being a world champion than hangman adam page i've got more chance as well uh then there's

00:07:38kenny omega he talks about in croatia i've got more chance of winning the world cup than hangman page

00:07:43as of winning the aw world title um he says kenny omega will never get redemption and he employs don

00:07:51callous services yet again here to say don have i beaten kenny don says yes champ how many times

00:07:58twice champ he tells kenny to hop off his kosher pickle um but he said look everyone i've talked about

00:08:06their stars and then there's mark briscoe uh but the fans love him because they feel sorry for him

00:08:13since his brother died he did say it was horrible he's done a fantastic job throughout this ongoing

00:08:20rivalry with mark briscoe and again it's what mgf has perfected over the years just sprinting up to

00:08:27that line stopping a millimeter short of it yeah yeah exactly um he basically says briscoe's delusional

00:08:35for even thinking he's got a shot winning the triple b um but he wants don to reveal team dcmjf

00:08:43and don callous understandably names kevin knight who we already knew about carl flitcher jake oh god

00:08:49should have i written his name down my notes jake something um kazuchiro karda and much to

00:08:58trent barretta's chagrin he was good yeah he was like here it comes it's like the lonely island

00:09:04and and t-pain it was like and andrade el idolo trance a bit good he's sort of kicking his

00:09:12kicking his heels after all this um and jeff walks back in to sort of bask in his team's glory

00:09:20andrade's a bit insulted by all this that he's just going to be forced onto this team and he asks

00:09:26max

00:09:28how you know he'll join his team and jeff says uh don take care of that and don reminds andrade

00:09:34uh please amigo patience um you'll get a title shot but for now focus on being a part of this

00:09:41team

00:09:41good lineup good lineup good stuff well delivered takes care of the characters and how they interact

00:09:48in in that sort of only an aew style so there's some like nice detail work in the background with

00:09:54trent that i appreciated um it's still a little bit like this pay-per-view build it's one of those

00:10:01where you're kind of stuck with forbidden door in a way because if you scrap this pay-per-view

00:10:06and you could argue that they almost have while still keeping the name because it's a canon aew event

00:10:15at this point with minimal like minimal outside involvement if you scrap it entirely and rename

00:10:26it and just say right okay it's called aew uh badass brawl or whatever and that's the new pay-per

00:10:32-view

00:10:33you're basically saying new japan is formally finished the cmll um stuff while incredibly popular

00:10:43in its native mexico has never had that same penetration new japan had in the 2010s um

00:10:51so i it just feels like the most b-level pay-per-view aew has right now the lineup

00:10:57is still incredible the show itself should still be incredible um but i don't know whether they want

00:11:02to sort of sell the pay-per-view with a wild gimmick match and just a bit of window dressing

00:11:08or whether

00:11:08mgf's injury necessitates him playing a bit part in the main event or a combination of those two

00:11:14things this doesn't feel like the most high stakes thing of all time quite frankly um so they're up

00:11:20against it on dynamites with this sort of bill but you know mgf typically fantastic and i'll tell you

00:11:25what like one of the things i've said about mgf for the longest time is that he is so fantastic

00:11:30because he has chemistry with everyone and an ability to make wrestlers that otherwise don't

00:11:37really sell you on their programs feel like you need to see them have a match with mgf like sammy

00:11:42gavara never hotter than when programmed with mgf or you know teaming with chris jericho to an extent

00:11:49like as any andrade is the kind of guy where it's like you know he's got the best elbow in

00:11:57wrestling

00:11:57you know that on his best nights he can give you four and a quarter four and a half stars

00:12:01but like have you ever truly since 2018 eight years ago geez yeah have you ever thought god i need

00:12:08to

00:12:08see a match with him it's more of a ah this andrade match was a pleasant if not unexpected surprise

00:12:15he's

00:12:15great see you again next week but i'm not doing cartwheels i'm not fantasy booking him like mgf and

00:12:21and andrade is something yeah i really like it so i like how they tended to that as well

00:12:26um look i'm the time to get jazzed is all in i'm not particularly jazzed by any of this but

00:12:32for

00:12:32what they must do it was it was broadly fine and then we got our first match of the night

00:12:37that was the man that mgf mentioned kenny omega versus tony niece and his tiny niece of course

00:12:44davari davarian mark stilling without ringside as well i've got to say sidge i haven't seen

00:12:49uh a sort of consistent level of attack like this since i don't know uh 10 o'clock last night

00:12:56probably

00:12:58give me a couple a few of these it was 10 minutes after the start of the second half we

00:13:03were

00:13:03unbelievable it was uh it was it was like the anti-newcastle approach where it's like we cannot

00:13:08lose this we will not lose this go out and do what you need to do and what you're capable

00:13:12of doing and

00:13:12doing it do it to you utmost you got to bollocking it off don't i think it's the general consensus

00:13:17we killed them 10 minutes uh so yes it's funny as well one more thing uh i'm in a uni

00:13:23group chat

00:13:24it's a long-standing group chat because i graduated in 2008 and it always sort of like pipes up most

00:13:31around an international football tournament and two of the lads in it are my new fans and

00:13:38anderson didn't have his best half right and they were like forget me anyone get me anyone

00:13:42like my new fans are convinced that copy menu is like the next uh matthias okay he isn't like i

00:13:50like him i like him but come on he's not elliot anderson so i'll say to him is copy menu

00:13:55being

00:13:55linked with 120 million move british and i wouldn't be he's like still a british one of the biggest record

00:14:01fees in english football history uh no he isn't um is copy menu

00:14:09established as the best young english midfielder since deck winner no he isn't that's elliot anderson

00:14:15has have rice and anderson developed quite a great chemistry to the point where people are like

00:14:21envious of our midfield and think with them two pulling the strings it could really make the

00:14:25difference in this world cup uh no it's elliot anderson so i was arguing with him at half time

00:14:30saying do not bring him on do not make a knee-jerk reaction because anderson hasn't had his best 45

00:14:36what did uh elliot anderson do within 90 seconds of the restart i played one of the best balls of

00:14:41the

00:14:41tournament and uh sparked a fantastic goal i had a row with my best mate's brother who inexplicably

00:14:50does not like harry kane uh he's when harry kane scored the penalty he said more snap padding from harry

00:14:57kane and i just before he scored the goal from the corner replied mate he's literally the best

00:15:04england striker in our lifetime now be careful what i said there not saying he's the best english

00:15:11striker we've had sheer how many premier league goals has harry kane scored this is what i was

00:15:15clarifying we've got shearer we've had wayne rooney both phenomenal english strikers right for england

00:15:24there has never been in my lifetime a better english a better striker than harry kane because

00:15:30he's tried to come back with like oh come on mate we've got we've got shearer we've got rooney he

00:15:34even

00:15:34went back and said we've got robbie fowler in dion dublin i went cool mate add up all of those

00:15:39world cup goals that they've scored combined yes and then come talk to me this is it this is it

00:15:45there you go um but yes i will say it's one thing fuck off someone's trying to ring us always

00:15:52this

00:15:52always happens to me it's usually when eric gets on the mummy's phone leave us alone for god's sake

00:15:57we have an hour and a half to talk football and wrestling that goes for absolutely everyone

00:16:02um what i was going to say i came was you know brilliant mostly give the ball away a couple

00:16:08of

00:16:08times it's one thing for him to drop a bit deeper in midfield at one point he was trying to

00:16:12do it

00:16:12at center back he's the qb i love him i don't know what we're doing there but anyway let's go

00:16:16to

00:16:16the action caney in the pocket yes uh kenny omega versus tony nisi as i mentioned uh devari

00:16:21sterling out there they tried running a distraction uh but nice mr moonsault and omega

00:16:26just wrecks him with snapdragons v trigger one for sterling on the apron as well fantastic uh who

00:16:32falls back into devari and the one winged angel um for this time at least uh gets the one two

00:16:37three

00:16:38for kenny omega um he's about to cut a promo when out comes tmdk zach saber jr bad dude tito

00:16:46and

00:16:47mikey nichols uh omega retreats and chucks zach the mic but he's joined on the ramp by the young

00:16:54books and jungle jack perry and saber kicks the mic back to omega who picks it up and introduced

00:17:02tmdk he said he doesn't know what it stands for and neither do they and as he said that i

00:17:06thought

00:17:06i actually don't know what it stands for i've known of them i've seen them a lot uh we've played

00:17:12the tmdk theme at sweet chin disco and i went i actually don't i don't know what it it means

00:17:18i

00:17:19know now the mighty don't kneel uh i've for a split second wondered if it was a uh murder death

00:17:26kill

00:17:26gang alliance with us like is this getting it's a bret heart saying we're getting gagey here we go

00:17:31bret heart saying it the murder death kill yes exactly um but he he says he respects zach for

00:17:38coming all this way to challenge little old him um why be humble yeah i was like don't

00:17:45um he said look you want you want a big fat derp w uh by your name but it would

00:17:51look just as good for

00:17:51kenny beating someone from his home away from home new japan um looks like we've got people here maybe

00:17:57we'll meet up soon um and he says his catchphrase because he doesn't think tmdk have won it was so

00:18:04something or nothing this i thought i was expecting more once that came out i thought oh here we go

00:18:07because i love zach sabre jr on the microphone a bit disappointed i was a bit disappointed by this

00:18:13um you know kenny omega it's like this was neither now nor summit in my opinion right because if you're

00:18:22going to take this approach let's call it the rock approach where you talk down to your opponent you

00:18:28barely build them up you take the piss out of them for being irrelevant and not on your level

00:18:32if you're going to do that you therefore have to present yourself as this absolutely massive star

00:18:39how dare you step to me you're irrelevant you could argue that's quite counterproductive in that

00:18:45wrestling has sort of normalized this approach because the rock was so funny once upon a time

00:18:48and so if you go and you don't even have a catchphrase no one even knows what your initial stand

00:18:53for

00:18:53it's like it's a it's a burial promo to a degree but like omega at the same time is so

00:18:58poor and he's

00:19:00my favorite wrestler of all time so i'm allowed to say this but kenny omega is so poor at pumping

00:19:07himself up like casting himself as this god of professional wrestling like the absolute dogs

00:19:13bollocks that's like all right you can't do the humble approach and say oh little old me whatever

00:19:20um i guess it'll be a good win for you but it'll probably be a big one for me as

00:19:23well

00:19:24come to challenge little old me the self-deprecating thing that he constantly does

00:19:28that winds me up and then say uh like uh you're a bit irrelevant no one even knows you even

00:19:34have a

00:19:34catchphrase i don't know it's like then like it's one thing it's like right well no one cares if you

00:19:40beat this person but you're so funny and charismatic that i still want to see you it's like he's not

00:19:45doing

00:19:45either of those things um and i'm with you like it's early in the build um it's one of those

00:19:52match

00:19:52graphics sells it the match will be great who really cares but like as you say like zach saber jr

00:19:57is

00:19:57incredible on the microphone you should have given him three minutes to just tear kenny omega a new

00:20:01one he's better equipped to do it than kenny is to him so i thought they got this wrong um

00:20:06but again

00:20:06who cares the match will sell itself i am i promise at some point i will stop banging this drum

00:20:11but i

00:20:12thought this opening match aside this opening sort of 10 15 20 minutes of dynamite was the

00:20:18personification as well of why mjf needs to walk into embley's world champion you've got the as you

00:20:22mentioned the promo where he talks up all of his potential opponents he hypes you up on a match with

00:20:27andrade amongst amongst others next carl fletcher kevin knight builds a million different directions

00:20:33for the foreseeable is i mean the the selling point of wembley for most people i would assume is

00:20:39come to wembley and see will osprey win the world title for the first time

00:20:44yes kenny omega will put on a jaw-dropping match with osprey i'm not doubting that

00:20:49but i think in terms of talking people into the building it is night and day and it was personified

00:20:55here but i know man that redemption pay-per-view got me feeling some kind of way a little bit

00:21:01worried

00:21:01yeah but um yeah i was just baffled by he had he come sacksaber comes sacksaber jr comes out with

00:21:10his

00:21:10boys doesn't attack kenny omega which would almost be a justification of like well he doesn't need to

00:21:14talk now because he's like his actions did talking so he comes out doesn't talk doesn't do anything

00:21:21why was he there and then kenny omega talks and sort of yeah half-arsed

00:21:26bang and people are like he cannot build a match on us tv to save his life kenny omega it

00:21:33really

00:21:33really upsets me like he's he used to be so ambitious the guy in 2017 2018 who was like not

00:21:42only am i going to change the world and become the biggest star the coolest guy the best bound machine

00:21:48the person who's going to completely destroy everything you thought you knew about the craft

00:21:52of pro wrestling i'm going to do it and establish my brand outside of wwe's umbrella where is that

00:21:59kenny and i know he would do a piss about on a road to tag i know but the attitude

00:22:06that he exuded

00:22:07this absolute world beat and i knew he'd piss about on being the elite as well so i don't want

00:22:12to

00:22:12you could sort of take the piss yeah you could turn it on and off like a tab um i

00:22:19use that exact

00:22:20analogy when he came out and did the sunny kiss squash when people were like coming out in shorts

00:22:25and doing this sort of stuff with the hangman in the tag team division and he comes out and i'm

00:22:29the

00:22:29biggest star in the world i can do i can parody this and still be the best big name guy

00:22:34in the company

00:22:36um i don't get what he's doing half the time

00:22:41then we got the death riders represented by john moxley and daniel garcia more on him later uh

00:22:48versus versus brodido that's bandido all right champion of course and brodie king

00:22:53um we start with uh garcia and bandido but it was fun when mox and brodie get in there and

00:23:00they just

00:23:01batter each other brodie's winning obviously despite moxley's success look at the size of

00:23:07brodie king so mox goes to the eyes tries a crossbody and bounces off him uh garcia comes in

00:23:13king uh gets a hip toss to send him to the floor and uh bandido takes to a break dives

00:23:19out onto both

00:23:20john and daniel garcia when we come back king wanted a gonzo bomb but moxley slid out into a

00:23:25cutter and you're like john's taken over here brodie just immediately no sold it and took his head off with

00:23:29a little lariat little class um bandido hits an overhead belly to belly into the corner

00:23:35but moxley saves garcia pulls him to the outside king wanted to hit a dive but marina shafia steps

00:23:39in and we have a bark off between king and shafia which allows mox time to recover and hit a

00:23:45dive

00:23:45himself uh they hit a spike pile driver do the death riders on king on the floor bandido gets crotched

00:23:52on

00:23:52the led board on the outside as well and garcia sends him into the front row um moxley puts king

00:23:58on the

00:23:58top rope superplex um but uh king kicks out after that and that goes to another break when we come

00:24:05back it's uh death rider still in control with the locomotion corner splashes finally king fires up

00:24:12takes them both out hot tag to bandido he runs wild torneos pop-up cutters he goes to suplex moxley

00:24:18shafia jumps in hits a body shot and then she eats a stalling suplex for her troubles

00:24:26i wonder what that was for us yeah some real attitude shown by

00:24:33my band yeah

00:24:36yeah that was lovely um and then bandido dives over the top rope onto all of the death riders on

00:24:42the

00:24:42outside uh it's down to garcia and bandido and he hits a pop-up knee and the 21 plex at

00:24:49the same

00:24:49time that brody dives out to take out moxley brodido get the one two three mixed on this because

00:24:56this ended up being really really good and i'm interested in what follows biggest ellipsis ever dot dot

00:25:06dot eventually this did not need to go 22 goddamn minutes i'm gonna make a broader point in terms of

00:25:13the action it wasn't good enough to justify 22 minutes elements of it were fantastic like they did a

00:25:18really great job of showcasing bandido by the finish but my god this could have been done and

00:25:23i'm telling you half the time no exaggeration half of the goddamn time it felt like that typically

00:25:29indulgent john moxley has a psychosexual fixation with wrestling matches that approach or exceed 20

00:25:36minutes for no real reason there's so much flab to the modern day john moxley experience this is a

00:25:43weekly occurrence almost every single time he's in the ring um it just goes for longer and longer and

00:25:49longer you could make the argument though and i'm gonna devil's advocate this bitch in that

00:25:56the longer it went on i'm thinking do we need to waste all of this time just to appease john

00:26:01moxley's ego and then eventually and i was like do we need brodito to to lose just to strengthen

00:26:06moxley ahead of an osprey match and to my shame it took me ages to realize what they were doing

00:26:11here it's like ah continental title match at the paper if you had a decade in there

00:26:16so that's what they were doing basically and it became immediately apparent on the stalling suplex

00:26:20where it's like give him a belt even if it doesn't mean anything i will believe in it if it's

00:26:24around

00:26:24his ways because bandido absolutely rocks so the idea was you have to swallow a lot of heat

00:26:29segments and grappling and but in the end oh after all this what a relief bandido is gonna win a

00:26:36title and i'm interested in that match match don't really know what it looks like but the preview was

00:26:40spot on it was just as soon as it got like very gaga and not wrestling it really started to

00:26:48work and

00:26:49maybe you needed all that wrestling to feel the relief i don't know i still think you could have

00:26:53accomplished this in literally half the time um but if you take this match the tag match 22 minutes

00:27:02like it just reeked of finamite for i would say 75 of the duration and i was kind of losing

00:27:08interest

00:27:09right if you take this match i want to say about 22 minutes and take the main event which again

00:27:16i want

00:27:16to say you've got 45 minutes of in-ring action and all it did was build to pay-per-view

00:27:23matches

00:27:23involving the exact same people more or less we need to get a bit more inventive actually we don't

00:27:29need to do because aew will get its pay-per-view audience on the hook regardless with these unbelievable

00:27:37tv view at a pay-per-view purchaser conversions that they have and the wild critical acclaim and

00:27:43memories that they create on these amazing pay-per-view nights i am more than willing to

00:27:49say this i wrote a book about aew um we've developed it's in the other studio i've just

00:27:57realized oh it's there becoming all elite the rise of aew do you live in the world excellent because you

00:28:01can buy it on amazon um i we've built a big following aew wise on this podcast um

00:28:09a bit of a epiphany over the past year i'm not in touch with our audiences i once was i

00:28:16still feel

00:28:17like i can offer salient takes on the product and good analysis and hopefully we're still really worth

00:28:22listening to um and i think it's important for me to say that i'm kind of out of touch with

00:28:27that

00:28:27audience where i was once so in harmony with them because i never want to say that i'm speaking on

00:28:32someone's behalf or i've got the final verdict or whatever it's quite obnoxious behavior because

00:29:12here's the thing with john moxley going 22 minutes on this dynamite 19 on others that is one of the

00:29:19reasons why you will see someone like the dogs just doing a few things or certain wrestlers on collision

00:29:26there are so many wrestlers in aew that just exist and it's still a problem not a big one because

00:29:31mgf still

00:29:32on the top and the title picture still so absorbing i still think you could have a better top to

00:29:38bottom

00:29:39product if john moxley halves his match lengths and he can give tv time to other guys and build other

00:29:45things better than just let's do the match again yeah it gets uninspiring sometimes i agree yeah fully in

00:29:52agreement with you i'm not as uh annoyed as when they would do the let's have a match like if

00:29:58they

00:29:58had done bandido versus john moxley and guess what it's gone to a time limit draw guess we'll run that

00:30:02back in the pay-per-view because that was like they did that like two pay-per-view cycles in

00:30:06a row didn't

00:30:07they so i was less bothered by that and i will say the main event for all the oh well

00:30:12they've just

00:30:12given away the uh pay-per-view main event for free there oh quite quite a lot of fun watching

00:30:17all the

00:30:17different people interact with it and i was like how's that gonna look in a steel kj i will say

00:30:22yeah this was egregious in terms of match length yeah especially because i just looked there as

00:30:27you were talking as i was like i wonder what how this compared to the other matches on this show

00:30:30the mercedes match which we'll talk about a little bit later basically the same length of time that is

00:30:34the difference so that justified its duration yeah i think it's it but both matches had as you would

00:30:40do if you're going to go 20 odd minutes well certainly the mercedes match had quite a slow start

00:30:46uh but they both went across two ad breaks and like fun action in the the obviously with with

00:30:52brodie and bandido and then in there fun action um when it's like we're gonna have a break oh god

00:30:58and then you're gonna come back i didn't need to go that long whereas compared to compared you know

00:31:02i've never never seen hazuki match and i was like oh great it's gonna roll on even more it's loads

00:31:08of

00:31:08fun and i don't think this was so boring and overdone because ultimately as i said they got there in

00:31:14the end that i detracted from the the mercedes match but like i just think you could have made

00:31:21the story that they were telling the specific story that they were telling with mercedes and hazuki

00:31:26just mean that bit more if someone is taking the ace the probable winner of the tournament the

00:31:33biggest star and women's wrestling star in the us they are however they promote her to the absolute

00:31:38limit it would mean so much more if they were disciplined elsewhere with the match times

00:31:43that's fair yeah still worked but it could just work that extra bit more in my opinion and i'll

00:31:48mention it here even though it happened later on in the show uh lexi was backstage with brodito and

00:31:52bandido was just bouncing off the wall so much so that brody was all right mate tranquille a little bit

00:31:56um yeah and uh bandido seen the gold on the shoulder of john moxley he wants a piece of that

00:32:01in walk the death riders um mox reminds bandido about the rules of this title match but he says

00:32:09tells him to shoot his shot and bandido is very excited for the pay-per-view match as you mentioned

00:32:14um following brodito versus the death riders though we see i mean who could have called this uh proto

00:32:21carder backstage um saying we haven't forgotten about the international title yes we're a team with

00:32:27jeff tonight and at forbidden door um but we've not lost focus on that obviously um we

00:32:35we know our team we don't know mark briscoe's team but i i think we can work out one person

00:36:05tag titles what he did to us people might expect me to say something unsavory about family members but

00:36:09you're wrong even christian cage has got standards but i've never seen a tag team named after their mothers

00:38:05have a match against two legends it's fun but it's it's got the potential to be the match on forbidden

00:38:13door i'm like ah i forgot about that one i forgot about it yeah i think there is uh

00:38:19uh ways to establish challenges that you kind of know aren't going to do it yeah um and then

00:38:29they give them best option i mean i suppose in terms of like the the whole package of like here's

00:38:38what we can offer you as a as a sort of checklist of things that they'll give to you on

00:38:42the road to

00:38:43challenge failing in your challenge to cope and cage yeah we can offer you a win against the young bucks

00:38:49on collision yeah so you know there's this there's levels but i you know with this sort of program

00:38:54where you know without a shred of doubt who's gonna win you better make an entertaining and i think

00:38:59christian cage was entertaining enough yeah yeah exactly and i've got no real issue with

00:39:05kind of just sort of uh well not that they're generic because i like the dogs but you will face

00:39:57beat her and return back to japan with the aw women's title and we're reminded that kid has beaten

00:40:02tecla in the past tecla's sitting backstage saying i've done all that dojo life um you know you know

00:40:08made you a star got me kicked out there if anything um uh tony khan said uh start like his

00:40:16favorite wrestler outside of aw i don't care uh i only care about my title um that's a neat way

00:40:21of putting her over spitting on the logo is just the start of what uh starlight kid can be offended

00:40:27by she's gonna take she's gonna rip her mask off and spit in her face at forbidden door um which

00:40:36once it opens will show that tecla runs this place i like this and it's uh like the match as

00:40:42well

00:40:42there are two forbidden door forbidden door matches at forbidden door yeah i was just trying

00:40:47to make the calculation when you were mentioning it kenny's at sj and starlight kid tecla it's a sign of

00:40:53the times um i it's not 2022 anymore is it but this is a little bit of that magic and

00:41:04at the end of the

00:41:04day personally subjectively like i'd rather they do the matches that they are setting up

00:41:14than just sort of crowbar in uh this guy like it feels like you know we got two big japanese

00:41:21stars

00:41:22in i don't know a lot about starlight kid but i like the presentation here and i liked the

00:41:26tecla could sell me on most things to be honest yeah i think tecla's so good at just being like

00:41:30oh god i hope you lose you're not going to because you should go all the way to wembo

00:42:24and hazuki uh who i knew a bit about obviously with her involvement in the tournament not a great

00:42:30deal i hadn't seen a lot of her uh and there was a bit of a like a slight flub

00:42:34early on and i was like

00:42:35oh but by the end of this my words what an introduction uh and what a showcase for her here

00:42:41despite her not getting the w early on mercedes does well but hazuki takes back over and mercedes

00:42:49is suddenly like all right oh calm down calm down wait a second which was a bit where she's just

00:42:53like leaning against the bottom rope and hazuki just grinding her boot into her face she's like

00:42:57wait a second so much so that she takes a powder as we go to a break to check her

00:43:02face in the owen

00:43:03heart cup good stuff uh when we come back from the break though uh mercedes fights back it's a

00:43:10lung blower for a two count onto hazuki but then she sidestepped a charge through the ropes and

00:43:15hazuki hits a ddt on the apron and uh three big dies that gets the crowd kind of going here

00:43:22um

00:43:24she goes up top does hazuki with a shotgun drop kick for a two count um mercedes kicks out that

00:43:30but

00:43:31falls straight into a cross face and she has to fight to the ropes um mercedes keeps hitting meteor as

00:43:36the third one of this match goes from the uh ring to the stage to take us to a commercial

00:43:41break again

00:43:42um when we come back um hazuki switches to a cross face after a lung blower um that was unbelievable

00:43:51yeah really really good transition here mercedes escapes um but there's a great look on her face

00:43:58so i've got a lung blower sent on cross face finally got out that thank god right okay then

00:44:05she realizes that hazuki still got wrist control there's just a look of like almost grim acceptance

00:44:12and we get a real slug fest with hazuki getting the better of it they get to their feet spinning

00:44:18ddt to

00:44:19mercedes monet thrust kick another two count brain buster from hazuki and mercedes is in real trouble

00:44:25here so she rolls to the outside to get some distance when she eventually comes back in some

00:44:29nice pin exchanges um but monet who's already injured hazuki's arm targets that wrenches her down

00:44:37to the mat puts from the statement maker uh azuki gets out of that though and counters into a pin

00:44:42for

00:44:42a two count they get up uh monet hit a backstabber but hazuki slides through a potential monet maker

00:44:49into a two count she wants a casadora uh but monet counters into a backstabber statement

00:44:54and i mean for god's sake folks where's the lie she did do that but also yeah uh and hazuki

00:45:02despite

00:45:04a real genuine effort to get out of this eventually has to submit i want to thank hazuki and mercedes

00:45:11money not just for providing me with like immense entertainment value and drama because i thought

00:45:16this really turned into something by the finish but they have given me a helpful illustration of a

00:45:23long-standing agenda of mine and that is you cannot just do a long match for long matches sake it

00:45:30needs

00:45:31to tell a story and aw has almost completely lost the point of why it does long matches

00:45:38they're just it's great action banger the reason why you do them was exemplified to quite brilliant effect

00:45:46here this wasn't quite the long beach match um but it approached that same magic where the longer it

00:45:55went the more the story was established and told of oh my god there could be a potential shock a

00:46:02passing

00:46:03of the torch someone is getting taken to their limit not just doing stuff that happens to go back and

00:46:08forth and it's 20 minutes long they're not just doing stuff they are telling the story and like i

00:46:14thought mercedes money's sometimes a little bit overdone but nonetheless really effective she told a

00:46:20great story of her face as you say the grim acceptance this idea of oh my god like my aura

00:46:27as this

00:46:28like obviously she's not the number one star in usa women's wrestling anymore because wwe exists

00:46:35but you can sort of buy it that she's got that pedigree she's got the match catalog she's got that

00:46:41aura she's got the package she's known as like the best one basically and she is really really really

00:46:47great or she was last night at that sort of all of it going up in smoke when she is

00:46:52taken to the limit

00:46:53and when it's the idea i'm going to use that stress that phrase again taken to the limit of like

00:46:59she just got it done in the end after a long exhausting battle a war it felt like towards

00:47:07the finish if you do matches that are john moxley length every time you really diminish this kind

00:47:14of story which would have been even better if there was discipline elsewhere as you say though some of

00:47:19the transitions here were immaculate it really felt like strong urgent turn like tournament wrestling

00:47:26um like hazuki they're not going to capitalize she's probably not going to be a regular or whatever

00:47:31but my god when this mechanism used to exist as a rarity the long match the objective of which is

00:47:40to

00:47:40tell you the person who was well below the level of the star that they've just taken to the level

00:47:45but there's a reason why we booked it like that hamflet invokes the cody darby allen example of like oh

00:47:51my god

00:47:51well yeah him in a long match against him taking him to the limit he's gonna be the next top

00:47:57star

00:47:57that mechanism is dead in aew um but this is the reason why promotions have long long long done this

00:48:05sort of thing and maybe if aew didn't do it quite so often and then in about six months after

00:48:11really

00:48:12sort of shortening those match times on tv did a tv match like this the first thing you would think

00:48:19would

00:48:19be my god it's 2019 and that's the next darby allen or whatever you can't do it anymore but this

00:48:25is

00:48:26that rare tv match that went long that truly justified its runtime like some of the swings

00:48:32and momentum were truly like astonishing really well wrestled like heart and mouth excellent stuff again

00:48:41kind of took the time to get there but i guess that was the story as well yeah you're right

00:48:45and uh

00:48:46uh sort of early on because i remember this was the difference i remembered you talking about this

00:48:50yesterday and the long beach yeah match and it was in my head quite early on mercedes is quite glib

00:48:59she sort of knocks her down early on and it effectively says what are you doing in my ring

00:49:03i mean it's my belt from last year this basically i'm just back to defend it and

00:49:08come on don't take the piss to the bit where i thought at one point she'd been busted open it

00:50:22women's match um in that one hour 20 minute one hour 25 minute range and if we can just nail

01:03:55you really have changed and he leaves with prince nana to leave will considering what's going on here

01:04:00i thought this was fantastic yes really really really really strong television um

01:04:07they did a fantastic job aw's really good at these face-to-face confrontations like really really

01:04:12good it's annoying they are so good at promoting matches don't do enough of it yes they are so good

01:04:17at video packages they do not run enough of them um again it ties back to the fact that the

01:04:23nicest thing

01:04:23i can ever say about aw is that's too good at everything too good at pushers too good at promos

01:04:28because you just always want like a bit less of everything and a bit more of everything

01:04:32at the same time yeah that makes any sense whatsoever because it's wrestling previously

01:04:39on wrestling good duty bound it's the law to do exposition and recap and this is where we were

01:04:46last year and here we are where we are now so wrestling dialogue is forever cursed to never feel

01:04:52completely authentic and real it never is going to get prestige drama level um it almost unconsciously

01:05:02talks down to the audience and because they have to get this exposition in or they feel they have

01:05:08to get this exposition in to a degree every single wrestling character that speaks to a different

01:05:12wrestling character speaks to them in a way that no people would in real life yeah so it's a level

01:05:19of

01:05:19artifice and exposition to everything so you've always got to navigate that to some degree or

01:05:23another you always got accepted for some reason this did an amazing job of doing precisely that

01:05:31and i really liked how they added the detail of we've not spoken in how long because it felt like

01:05:37all right because do i have to remind you of why we are where we are so i think they

01:05:40did a really

01:05:41skillful job of navigating the thing that wrestling feels the need to do and it genuinely felt it was

01:05:47really so well performed because you can tell they're still mate it's colleagues doing a wrestling

01:05:51show but they made it feel like it was this frosty friendship that's been on the outs for quite some

01:05:57time and they've undergone dramatic changes in their mood and demeanor since they were last sort of like

01:06:03palling around um this time last year it just felt as i guess the nicest way i can say it

01:06:10and the most

01:06:10accurate way i can say it is all wrestling dialogue is fake this felt way more real than most and

01:06:18really effective yeah it was one of those things where like you say we all know it but i do

01:06:23appreciate

01:06:24the fact that they do recaps i love to slap the mic out as well yeah and i also liked

01:06:29will's reaction

01:06:29when swerve swore like he knew he'd like he'd hit touched a nerve effectively but i did i will say

01:06:36yeah

01:06:36for the like you say the the usual wrestling jumping through hoops of we have to recap everything

01:06:42even though everyone was kind of there from all who remembers it it was fun to get each person's

01:06:47perspective on it all why they both feel slighted by the other person you know we always say good heels

01:06:53are always the ones that you go i don't agree with them but i can see why he might feel

01:06:57that way yeah

01:07:50segment because osprey's walking around the back and daniel garcia is sort of throwing his hands up

01:07:56come on bruv what are you gonna do uh he called you fragile you're not gonna take that him calling

01:08:01you fragile and will snaps grabs garcia by his collar overdue i love that this tv match is gonna kick

01:08:08ass lifts him up against the wall right oh leads okay will yeah um grabs him just pins him up

01:08:17the wall for for reiterating what swerve said and mox just sort of ambles in says you feeling

01:08:24control well says not not really no and uh moxie tells him look it's only words they use words out

01:08:38just words this entire time i see it's up here and he's sort of smart he's like all right mate

01:09:28he's above osprey and the pecking order and actually osprey is the real bitch and the genius

01:09:32bit of that is garcia at this point is a very fun kind of prelim heel and osprey is the

01:09:39next star incarnate in waiting sorry he he needs a hidden blade to the jaw and it's going to be

01:09:47fantastic when it finally happens keep hammering this keep hammering it keep hammering it and i don't

01:09:51know whether you do it as a tv defense after osprey presumably wins the belt or if he snaps and

01:09:59it's like he does garcia before a second mox match or what all i know is i'm at this point

01:10:04more excited for osprey garcia than i am osprey mox two and i loved osprey mox one yeah yeah i

01:10:11i think garcia's really found his role in this group sort of thinking he's above well almost above

01:10:19everybody but definitely like better than wheelie utah like and he's not proving himself to any to

01:10:26the extent that wheelie utah did over the years for the death riders so i just but i just love

01:10:47prior to the match happening um old team mjf comes out uh and mark briscoe on the screen's

01:10:53backstage he's there with the rest of the conglomeration cool carl o'reilly orange

01:10:58cassidy and roderick strong um he's going to bust through the glass ceiling whilst max is off playing

01:11:04hide the pickle with the don callous family he's got his own team to put together um he says look

01:11:08is

01:11:08going to be back we'll avenge that um o'reilly and this has been mentioned earlier on commentary but

01:11:14i'll just mention it here o'reilly reiterates that if anyone gets dq'd in the match tonight

01:11:18they are out of the steel cage match at forbidden door briscoe's not happy but he brings in uh

01:11:25someone who wants to get their hands on well multiple people in the match kanosuke to keshta

01:11:29he wants fletcher and okada he he wants sorry he wants fletcher he hates okada um and the final

01:11:36member of the team is darby allen who's heard all that nonsense about the glass ceiling his whole life

01:11:41is going to beat their asses tonight and at forbidden door so briscoe can get a world title

01:11:46shot and win the title and then yeah we get the match team mjf versus team briscoe uh mgf leader

01:11:53leading his men wants to start the match uh against mark briscoe immediately tags out yeah it always

01:11:59works it always works especially with it's not only actually i don't want to be a part of this match

01:12:06it's uh actually i don't want to be hot this match go on bitch boy in you go yeah

01:12:10even i tried it's like what what mate so he gets in there with briscoe uh drives him into the

01:12:18apron

01:12:19selfie with a fan at ringside i love ringside uh but that obviously is allowed mark briscoe to recover

01:12:24he has a baseball slide um 10 punches back inside one two three five six 79 10 punches from roderick

01:12:30strong and i was generally expecting the slowest 10 punches ever from orange cassidy but andrani's

01:12:35not having any of that he picks him up then cassidy pulls his pants down i was gonna do that

01:12:40great

01:12:41pants off ruined it thanks mate um i'm sure sidge loved the kyle off that came next and all the

01:12:48memories that that brought back it's trivialize everything why don't we indulge and nay nay encourage

01:12:56this uh detached ironic performative chanting it's wonderful more of that but okada breaks all

01:13:04that up and it all goes bonkers everyone brawls at ringside um darby allen wants a coffin splasher

01:13:09on doyle who catches him but gets low bridged and there's a coffin drop from the top rope from darby

01:13:13allen cassidy takes out knight with a tope uh somersault dive onto the pile from to keshta um darby

01:13:21allen meets mjf face to face and then kevin knight blindsides darby uh and then mjf stamps up darby

01:13:29allen and runs around like he just won the title darby allen who's that i know who darby allen is

01:13:37yeah that takes us to a break uh cassidy's in trouble when we come back um

01:13:43mjf they love him wrenching his arm one more time but cassidy counters and shoves mjf into jake doyle

01:13:50who's like yeah let's break this twat som it's mjf som he doesn't realize everyone's trying to tell

01:13:55him bang bang bang bang oh sorry boys uh everyone comes in then to hit something uh o'reilly hits

01:14:04with a knee lift darby allen wants andrade but he gets tripped up by night uh andrade hits that spinning

01:14:10back elbow uh cassidy comes in with a ddt but runs straight into a tombstone from okada um

01:14:16to keshta gets in there with proto kada um fights them off uh but fletcher hits them with a half

01:14:23and

01:14:23half and a halluva kick basically um but to keshta dodged a charge from fletcher and hits a blue

01:14:28thunder bomb everyone's down brisco and mjf come in again um brisco cleans house he teases the jay

01:14:36driller on mjf but kevin knight is there to to save him flies in with a springboard lariat darby allen

01:14:42tackles knight and they uh they brawl through the crowd or he chases him i should say through the

01:14:47crowd up onto the stage um darby allen's limping hope he's all right uh but doyle makes it's not

01:14:54gonna be all right after this doyle makes the save and uh knight hits him with some body shots and

01:14:58then

01:14:59doyle throws darby allen from the stage to ringside via the ring post oh my god oh my god he's

01:15:10dead

01:15:10again um mjf sets up for a heat seeker on mark briscoe but he counters that uh knees also given

01:15:19out as well he's got it all strapped up mjf um jay driller gets hit uh but don callis is

01:15:26there just

01:15:26to have a quick quiet word with the referee that's all um and there's a i mean quite visible

01:15:33three count let's be honest um briscoe goes up top for a froggy bow but fletcher intervenes

01:15:38roderick strong makes the tag but he immediately gets taken down by mjf into assault of the earth

01:15:43and the fastest tap i've ever seen now i don't want any of this post-match uh mjf jumps all

01:15:49over

01:15:49this opportunity to beat down the baby faces um callis who's on commentary says like great i'm

01:15:55gonna go and join the party um mjf pulls out the beautiful diamond ring and tells andrade uh

01:16:02pick mark briscoe and he's like who do you think you're talking to pal they shove each other and

01:16:07don callis like think of the money and the title shot but money mainly um and so andrade holds him

01:16:13up and mjf nails briscoe with the ring and uh yeah team mjf stands tall to close out dynamite

01:16:19i felt a little bit like hamflip watching this where it's like i get it this is good i don't

01:16:28know why i'm not moved maybe it's because i'm going to see this again with weapons yes it just feels

01:16:35so

01:16:35excessive like if you if this was just a match and it wasn't like essentially the pay-per-view match

01:16:41seven minutes shorter without the weapons i'd be like great really fun ass dynamite tag

01:16:49even then i would think this is so much better in the building um i just it was just a

01:16:55curious

01:16:55move to essentially give away the match and some of it was like unbelievable of course it was it's

01:17:03these 12 guys it's 12 guys brackets general it's always so like bang bang bang bang bang bang can't

01:17:09really take your eyes off it at times i miss the young books but like if they're gonna do a

01:17:14minute match to preview presumably a 30 minute match with weapons in a cage like you have to make it

01:17:22the most out of this world how could this get any better and i don't think it was that good

01:17:30fun but it was forgettable yeah yeah it did yeah exactly you told the story that you need to tell

01:17:36i i agree i don't even when we were previewing it yesterday i was like wait this is the same

01:17:41teams seems quite i don't know what the phrase is counterintuitive to just be like this is a match

01:17:50you'll get on next sunday but in a steel cage without it being like you say this like it's not

01:17:55as if like if it was a preview sorry i don't stepped on your dick there no no it's fine

01:17:59of stadium stampede before they personally ruined the gimmick for me or a preview of anarchy in the

01:18:04arena you'd think jesus christ oh my god this but anarchy in the arena let's go that forbidden door

01:18:12main event last year didn't it was fun again fun it didn't enshrine itself into pro wrestling

01:18:19legend it's one of the all-time great gimmick attractions like stadium stampede did in 2020

01:18:23or anarchy in the arena did in 2022 it was like oh it's like anarchy in the arena but not

01:18:28as good

01:18:28a different version or something similar but not as good like it doesn't that the match itself and

01:18:35there's only one match but you know they went out the gates hard with stadium stampede like in the

01:18:39arena um if it was like such this instant hit of a awesome gimmick match you'd think right okay good

01:18:49preview but my god it's going to be insane when it happens on pay-per-view it's like i didn't

01:18:54think

01:18:55it was that great on pay-per-view last year i didn't think this match was so great that i

01:18:59need

01:18:59to see them run it back baffling choices in a vacuum loads of fun the work was brilliant yeah yeah

01:19:06yeah um i just feel like i'm not invested in this pay-per-view cycle however i feel like it's

01:19:12going

01:19:12to be the ultimate it's all right on the night situation yes just the lineup looks unbelievable

01:19:17yeah exactly like there is stuff that you still want to see derby's not really got his hands on

01:19:23kevin knight properly derby's gonna want to get alone derby's gonna want to get revenge on jake doyle

01:19:29if he can stand yeah after that um and you got all the different dynamics uh amongst it as well

01:19:36with

01:19:36the other people in this match with you know tekesha and okada and fletcher and people like that so yeah

01:19:41like i say oh there was a fun preview for what it was i didn't think it was necessary necessarily

01:19:47in the need to go 22 freaking minutes either um but uh

01:19:53very happy to see team mgf win and very happy to see andrade continually i kind of andrade match on

01:20:03a pay-per-view i don't think it's starting build it long enough now so this isn't i mean they

01:20:08could do

01:20:08a decent number obviously off of friday could cost mgf the belt and they could do it all in you

01:20:12know

01:20:13that's a really good point i haven't considered it because they've been building it for ages like

01:20:17on twitter as well like these two really want to work together yeah
