00:00:06I'm Adam Wilborn, joined by Michael Hanfler and Michael Sidgwick,

00:00:08here to look ahead to tonight's episode of AEW Dynamite.

00:00:43I'm in a few minds here, three to be exact.

00:00:47Ooh.

00:00:50In a sort of trusting, somewhat happy place with AEW right now

00:00:56because Blood and Guts was, I thought, trope-heavy, overkill,

00:01:00but still fantastic nonetheless.

00:01:02This particular three-hour block looks genuinely really good,

00:01:06and there's some matches on here that I'm really, really into.

00:01:09And thirdly, I can't be arsed for Full Gear.

00:01:12And it's not necessarily a reflection of the card in and of itself,

00:01:16but I do find it to be quite uninspiring.

00:01:19I do find it to be a little bit, well, what did we do last month for?

00:01:25I don't like these essentially monthly four- to five-hour pay-per-views.

00:01:31I just don't think it's a particularly great idea.

00:01:35I don't think they've got the creative to juice it all up.

00:01:40I don't know.

00:01:41It's, I like, there's FTR Brodito stuff, like, really, really fun.

00:01:46And there's stuff elsewhere on the card where I've rather enjoyed the builds.

00:01:51And I think, you know, that the AEW tagline we established a couple of weeks ago

00:01:56was AEW, colon, at least the matches will be good.

00:01:59I mean, that's obviously going to be the case.

00:02:01I just, for our monthly pay-per-views, it's a piss take.

00:02:09It's a piss take.

00:02:12Look, they should get heated up on this show.

00:02:14So it's the job tonight to get me excited about them.

00:02:18Bad news, good news for me.

00:02:20Bad news.

00:02:21Tony Khan is not going to be a great booker again of a product overall.

00:02:26Decent angles, moments, matches aside, of an entire company of an entire product.

00:02:31Five years, maybe, if we're lucky.

00:02:33Truthfully, sometimes you never get two.

00:02:34And he's already had one really good one.

00:02:36Good news.

00:02:37I love him.

00:02:38Oh.

00:02:38I watched the, well, I listened to the entire of the Ariel Helwine interview last night.

00:02:44It's the best piece of PR Tony Khan's ever done, ever.

00:02:48For one, he, you know, was extremely big of him to use his title.

00:02:53Like how the second that he stopped sniping at WWE Hampton, it's like,

00:02:58hey, hey, hey, hey.

00:02:59You all right.

00:03:01Yes.

00:03:03Dickhead.

00:03:03But with more, right, best bit of PR he's ever done because it was him being the bigger man

00:03:12and said it from the very beginning.

00:03:15Let's not simplify billionaires or anything, but he has his time and he has his things

00:03:19and he could do nothing.

00:03:21He could do absolutely nothing ever.

00:03:23And he's made the call to go on that off the back of, like, some of his wrestlers doing it.

00:03:27And it's obviously been a slow run up to wanting, for whatever reason, to use Helwine's reach

00:03:32to plug Fulgate, to plug Dynamite, or to just plug AEW in general and use Helwine as best

00:03:36as he can in the future.

00:03:38It's a bigger man gimmick.

00:03:40It is.

00:03:40There's a bigger man element to it.

00:03:41So there is a bit of vanity and ego to this.

00:03:43But he did it, and he did it really successfully.

00:03:46And we kind of, we talked about this over the desks yesterday.

00:03:49Helwine is a very shrewd operator in the way that he was destined to allow Tony Khan a lot

00:03:53of room to be Tony Khan in an interview setting before he could get him talking about things

00:03:58we actually want to hear about, CM Punk, Miro, Chris Jericho, counter-programming,

00:04:05like, what it is to be WWE's opposition in 2025, all of these sort of things.

00:04:09He did it.

00:04:09He did all of it.

00:04:10He did let Tony Khan do his usual Dynamite's going to be great, Collision's great,

00:04:14Fulgate's going to be great.

00:04:15You know, just recently we had the, like, he did all of that to start off with.

00:04:18But then, to Helwine's immense credit, because he's got, like, a lot of experience.

00:04:23Don't give him immense credit.

00:04:24A modicum.

00:04:25A modicum.

00:04:26I'll accept a modicum.

00:04:27In this specific context, because he will, you know, he'll flip and he'll turn over as

00:04:33the years have proven and as the years have come, based on what he needs out of a specific

00:04:37piece of content he's producing, which in this case was an interview with Tony Khan.

00:04:40He waited and he waited and he rebuilt the trust and had the conversations and got the

00:04:44really interesting stuff.

00:04:46I wouldn't say it was necessarily, like, you and Phil have covered it on the news today.

00:04:51There are a few soundbites, but it's not like this.

00:04:55Bishop's strides are funny.

00:04:56Yeah, but it's not this sort of shocking thing that's come out.

00:05:00Tony Khan has been quite measured for a change in his assessment of all of these different

00:05:03things.

00:05:05And I love him.

00:05:08Like, we were talking on the Raw review yesterday.

00:05:12I mean, we all had a bit of a laugh about what we do with a time machine.

00:05:15I'm sitting here with you three at the desk, right?

00:05:17And we're all mucking Hamflip for picking, going back to the Survivor Series at night.

00:05:21Now, I'm telling you, Tony Khan would pick a time machine and go and watch his favorite

00:05:24wrestling match.

00:05:24I've never related to that man more across this thing.

00:05:27Like, we know he's a wrestling fan.

00:05:29We know this, right?

00:05:30But, like, Tony Khan, like me, has very clearly never gone dark on this, even when it's bobbins,

00:05:36right?

00:05:36And there was all these various points as he was getting into it.

00:05:38And Helwani, like, isolated this for praise as well.

00:05:41It's not just, obviously, the AEW records that he has this, like, insane recall of, which

00:05:47is frustrating as a fan because it's like, you need to realize what does actually matter.

00:05:51Well done that you can still reference that, but that's actually kind of irrelevant.

00:05:53You need to tell some more interesting stories.

00:05:54But it was how he was sort of applying all of these, like, the way his brain works ultimately

00:06:00to, like, his wrestling fandom.

00:06:02And the stuff, to Sid's point about, like, him not being critical of WWE, what he was

00:06:05saying was, which was really, really refreshing, he has said by him specifically was, yep, that's

00:06:11what they do.

00:06:12That's what they're going to continue to do.

00:06:14And fine, let them do that, and we'll try and do our own thing.

00:06:18And, like, he alluded to it without saying it.

00:06:21You know, he used to say we can't do it as well.

00:06:22And as I pointed out yesterday, he's kind of done it with blood and guts.

00:06:26Fair play in high time, more of it.

00:06:28You know the game.

00:06:29If you know the game you're in so well, play the game.

00:06:32Play the game.

00:06:33And he talked about Vince McMahon using, he didn't mention ECW, but this is one that

00:06:36crossed my mind.

00:06:37Vince McMahon using Smoky Mountain in 94, and I was thinking ECW in 1997, in exactly

00:06:42the same way that they've used TNA in 2025.

00:06:45You know, it's the industry.

00:06:46These things just repeat.

00:06:48Tony Khan talked about being an ECW fan, and, like, me and Sid would have been little

00:06:52ECW edgelords, being like, yeah, Vince is okay, I suppose.

00:06:54But Uncle Eric, Eric, rip off.

00:06:56Eric, rip off.

00:06:58Like, the very guy that now makes his content once a week saying, like, Tony Khan's an idiot

00:07:02and AW's trash.

00:07:03To be fair, I don't think he actually does that anymore.

00:07:05Which, yeah, but, you know, for a while, that was his big engagement thing.

00:07:09Tony Khan was an ECW edgelord.

00:07:11Yeah.

00:07:11Going, like, Uncle Eric's taking the tail and, you know, whatever.

00:07:14And he gets it, and then he just, he sort of was listening, and he's like, he's, he was

00:07:18far more honest about, you know, the fact that he listens to wrestling fans, but gets

00:07:24that we all have different tastes.

00:07:27And he's now just kind of going to listen to his better judgment.

00:07:30He recounted the tale of 2020 in January, and he said he had the exact same thing happen

00:07:33in January 2025, which is that very clever Tony Khan way of being like, you know the years

00:07:37that you quite like?

00:07:38And I was kind of the last guy to sign off on that stuff.

00:07:40You know, he knows what he's doing.

00:07:44All of that is a roundabout way of saying, I wasn't encouraged in any of this interview

00:07:47into thinking that really he has a magic wand or a big star that's going to make AW hot

00:07:51again.

00:07:53But, foundationally, I've never thought it's in healthier shape.

00:07:59I know that people enjoy, for a start, I think sometimes when people talk about liking

00:08:03chaos, I think they're lying.

00:08:04But, like, I know people think they like Tony Khan, the chaotic operator.

00:08:09That Ariel Helwani tweet with the hashtag AW Rampage was very funny.

00:08:14Yeah.

00:08:14But it wasn't good for business.

00:08:17Like, look now in the fullness of time what AW is when he's supposedly popping everybody

00:08:23with his daft tweets on Twitter.

00:08:25And I never thought less of him.

00:08:27You're a billionaire, mate, with all your favorite toys.

00:08:29And you're going on Twitter and you're behaving like this.

00:08:31Grow up.

00:08:31I think he's grown up.

00:08:33Like, I really, or I've just been, like, worked by a magnificent bit of PR and a guy

00:08:40that has been educated on.

00:08:41Media training.

00:08:42Correct.

00:08:42Whatever it is, right?

00:08:43And I'll take that as well.

00:08:44I've been worked by this, whatever.

00:08:46It's honestly, I listened to that and I came away thinking, like, right, I'm going to completely

00:08:50rethink how I critique AW because I believe he's going into this pure of heart, good faith,

00:08:58whatever the words are, I, like, we've compared him for, obviously, for very different reasons.

00:09:04We've compared him to Vince McMahon in the fact that, like, there is somebody that just

00:09:07likes what he likes and we're going to get it now.

00:09:08Whether we particularly like it or not, his habits and tropes and favorite things have

00:09:12been so established that that kind of became a Vince McMahon problem, you know, ignoring

00:09:17everything else just in terms of creative.

00:09:19That's where we're at with Tony Khan.

00:09:21And that's why we're so long away from, like, AW truly booming, you know, or, like,

00:09:25truly, so he was using numbers to say, look, our percentage of audience versus WWE has not

00:09:31been as high as this since 2021.

00:09:33And he was using, like, the SmackDown and Raw figures dropping and AW's rating stabilizing.

00:09:37Ignoring streaming numbers on max, he was like, you know, the numbers we have access

00:09:40to, that as a percent, Dynamite's rating as a percentage of SmackDowns is the highest

00:09:45it's been since 2021.

00:09:47So as a challenger brand, in his mind, that's his rationale for, you know, we're kind of

00:09:51back on track.

00:09:52Like, there's no boom happening, there's no AW overnight, this makes me feel great every

00:09:56week on Dynamite.

00:09:58But I, he worked to me, I was just like, no, I think he's going to go into this Dynamite

00:10:02and he, like he did last week and like he's going to go into full gear, actually believing

00:10:06that what he's doing is for the best and is for the greater good.

00:10:09And with Sidgwick fundamentally, four or five hour pay fees once a month.

00:10:13No.

00:10:14He's stupid.

00:10:14Like, like, but he's doing that, believing that, like, he is serving his audience and the

00:10:20buy rates of state.

00:10:21He is, he is.

00:10:22I'm being grumpy, slightly jaded.

00:10:25I've seen it all now.

00:10:26Give you a radical new overhaul of TV or whatever.

00:10:29It ain't happening.

00:10:30It just isn't.

00:10:31Tony Khan is Tony Khan.

00:10:33He's shown us who he is and for better or worse, et cetera.

00:10:36The buy rates are holding up nicely.

00:10:38There is a core base of AEW fans who I might not have ever related to less that nonetheless

00:10:43established this is working.

00:10:45And before we get into the rundown of tonight's show, I need to talk about, and I didn't think

00:10:51I would ever say this considering you asked me questions about him on a weekly basis up

00:10:56until about two months ago.

00:10:57We need to talk about Killer Cross.

00:10:59This was, this is the most hilarious bit of the interview for me.

00:11:02So every time I opened Twitter, when Karrion Kross was unknown to us, sort of running down

00:11:09that WWE contract and WWE didn't really have any huge ambitions to re-sign him, I felt like,

00:11:17hang on, does he, does this f***er live in Helwarni's studio?

00:11:21He is on this show constantly talking about, you know, like his options or like how things

00:11:30are going from, it's like, he was like the, you know, like the special guest almost every

00:11:36single week.

00:11:37Obviously he wasn't, that's what it felt like.

00:11:40But Karrion Kross was on Helwarni, like a lot.

00:11:43I'm not making this up my head.

00:11:45I can still picture him in front of that screen and the Bret Hart wall.

00:11:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:11:48Like at least more than once, God damn it.

00:11:51So mate, it's just funny because Ariel Helwarni was like, when he's, when he's signing

00:11:55Killer Cross then, when he's signing Killer Cross, I thought he'd be a layup for

00:11:59you guys as, you know, this heart is property in pro wrestling.

00:12:03Then Tony Khan, I'm inferring this, maybe Tony Khan has got every single plan to get

00:12:12back in touch with Killer Cross and give him a nice 750k deal for five years.

00:12:18Maybe that's happening.

00:12:19He just needs to find some time in his schedule to have the conversation.

00:12:24Are we, you know, is this simpatico?

00:12:26Are we like, oh, we've got great plans.

00:12:28You've got those same plans.

00:12:29Let's push it to the moon and he's going to be the next big superstar in all elite wrestling.

00:12:32But Tony Khan was like, yeah, I haven't spoken to him in a while.

00:12:35I haven't really spoken to him in a while.

00:12:36I had a great conversation with him several years ago.

00:12:38Yeah, it's been a long time.

00:12:39Then he gets sidetracked and he says, you know, you know, actually I was kind of

00:12:45broken something with Derby and Karrion Kross because Derby Allen wanted to match with

00:12:50Killer Cross.

00:12:51On the Indies, you know, I had to, you know, facilitate that and do all the schedule to

00:12:56allow Derby to do that.

00:12:57And then he, in his way, he's like, oh, you know, and Derby's been so great for us.

00:13:01It'd be remiss of me to say that.

00:13:02Yes, I mean, great.

00:13:03He's been having this excellent program with Jon Moxley.

00:13:06And then Ariel Hellwarn, he was like, oh, we're getting off traffic.

00:13:08Guy, Killer Cross, Killer Cross, Killer Cross, Killer Cross.

00:13:10We need to talk about Killer Cross.

00:13:11And he was signing Killer Cross because he was like, I thought he'd be a layup for you.

00:13:15Killer Cross just went, Ariel, get me that bag.

00:13:18That's what it felt like to me.

00:13:20And again, this is reckless speculation zone.

00:13:23But it's like, yeah, you're getting sidetracked.

00:13:25You're talking about Derby Allen and Jon Moxley.

00:13:27You need to start talking about Killer Cross.

00:13:28I asked you a question about Killer Cross.

00:13:31Yeah, yeah, I haven't had a conversation in a while.

00:13:32Like, what's he going to say?

00:13:34He still rounded it well.

00:13:35He was like, yeah, I'd be interested to speak to him again.

00:13:37So that's, he was able to land on the, like, sort of, what are we doing here?

00:13:43Tell him to call me.

00:13:44And they can have a conversation.

00:13:47At the end, they can still do that, you know?

00:13:49Like, the bold-faced cheek on Helwani, if, in my opinion, there was a little bit of,

00:13:59It was honestly, it was a disgrace, I thought.

00:14:01A genuine disgrace, like, putting him in that.

00:14:03It's one thing, right, to ask him about stuff that he has willingly participated in,

00:14:11and you could argue mismanaged the CM Punk situation.

00:14:14Now, it's absolutely fair game, right?

00:14:16Fair as it gets.

00:14:18And Tony Connors put himself forward knowing, or should have known, that line of inquiry was coming on the show.

00:14:26He nailed it.

00:14:28Like, what a pathetic ambush I perceived that to be.

00:14:35I thought it was genuinely disgraceful.

00:14:37Like, he's putting him in such a rubbish position there.

00:14:41Like, if he wanted to make a massive move for Killer Cross,

00:14:46and he had the same opinion that some people have of Killer Cross,

00:14:51where it's like, God, I think he is a funny bloke.

00:14:54He became a bit on this podcast, like, he's got a great way with this kind of intimidation and all the rest of it.

00:14:58But yeah, he can't wrestle.

00:15:00And AEW was kind of like the wrestling promotion.

00:15:03Like, what do you want him to say?

00:15:06Clearly, if you connect the dots and infer things,

00:15:09Tony Connors doesn't necessarily rate him as a wrestler.

00:15:12He had the chance to sign him the first time Cross got released.

00:15:16Didn't make a really ambitious play.

00:15:17I think he wanted him.

00:15:18New Year's party at Dailies or something?

00:15:19He wanted him.

00:15:21If I recall correctly, and I apologize in advance if I get this wrong,

00:15:25because, you know, I'm just talking off the top of my dick.

00:15:27I think he kind of wanted him to be one of MGF's guys to face Wardlow when he does his gauntlets.

00:15:35I remember that.

00:15:35If I vaguely recall that, that was the level.

00:15:39It's not like, give him the vignettes, give him the big push, have him headline pay-per-views.

00:15:43Like, you know, and you've asked him to basically say that on this show.

00:15:50I thought it was pathetic, really, really not nice at all.

00:15:55Like, what's Tony Conn meant to say to that?

00:15:58I'm not interested really in signing Killer Cross,

00:16:00because he wrestles like he is a submersible, and this is where the best wrestle.

00:16:05Like, what's he, is he going to say that?

00:16:37There was a lot of questions where Helwani knew.

00:16:43Like, he just comes over and is like, surprise, surprise.

00:16:46We've got him in tonight.

00:16:48Hey, how you doing?

00:16:49If you don't sign me, I'll prick your legs.

00:16:52He's like, he's knowing.

00:16:54Helwani's picturing the thumbnails that we all make and others will make of, like, this interview.

00:16:58Chopping it up in lots of pieces and stuff.

00:17:00And he mentioned a good question to ask to get Tony Khan on this particular subject.

00:17:04And Tony Khan's answer was even better than the question.

00:17:07He said, you know, you see the picture of punk Cody Jade and Ricky with the belts.

00:17:13And you've got to know that that's something that people want you to see.

00:17:17Like, what's your, did you see it and what's your reaction to it?

00:17:19And he was like, yeah, I saw the picture.

00:17:21And he kind of did his Tony Khan thing where he talked.

00:17:24Somehow he ends up getting around to saying, like,

00:17:25Fullgate is going to be a great show.

00:17:26But then, like, he kind of does get back around to it.

00:17:31And then, or Ariel Helwani, like, brings him back on to the subject to get an answer on this one.

00:17:35He's like, you know, did you feel pride or, you know, like, what was anything?

00:17:38And he kind of said, well, you know what it actually made me think of?

00:17:41It made me think of Double or Nothing 2020.

00:17:43This was unbelievable operating from Tony Khan here.

00:17:46He goes, like, it made me think of Double or Nothing 2020.

00:17:50Cody had just become our TNT champion.

00:17:52Jon Moxley had just become the world champion.

00:17:53And we're all picturing the picture.

00:17:54And he says, and there was this bit of Daily's Place where it was the only kind of space we could use.

00:17:58So all the wrestlers are around.

00:18:00It's where we would film the interviews.

00:18:01And you can imagine, like, all the roster watching while the wrestlers cut their promos.

00:18:04And it was this bit because of COVID and all this.

00:18:06He says, so Code is there with his belt and Moxley is there with his belt.

00:18:10And they take this picture.

00:18:11And you can remember the picture.

00:18:12They're both, like, flipping the bird and they're holding up the AW belts.

00:18:15And it's funny how wrestling works because that absolutely would have been a, look at us now, WWE.

00:18:20You know, that was what the intent of the picture was.

00:18:22And then Tony even goes, you know, I think I took that picture.

00:18:25Like, actually, like, and that's what it made me think of.

00:18:27I'll take the pictures.

00:18:29There they are with their belts.

00:18:31And, like, now these wrestlers have got their belts.

00:18:32And I work with them all.

00:18:33And I consider them all friends.

00:18:35And I'd contact them or they could contact me.

00:18:37And we could have this conversation.

00:18:38And he didn't not say Punk.

00:18:39So the idea is the number's still in his phone.

00:18:42It's just that they're not, they're not, he said they don't work for AW.

00:18:44But, like, so that's what I'll be thinking about is wrestlers on my roster.

00:18:48But, yeah, that's what it made me think of.

00:18:49And I love that because he was, it was this way of saying, if you can even read between the thinnest of lines was, workers are workers.

00:18:58Funny how Cody Rose took that picture in 2020 and now he took that one in 2025 because that's what wrestlers do.

00:19:03And that made me think, he's learning.

00:19:06He's learning.

00:19:07He's getting smarter.

00:19:08He's in this industry with all of his money with workers.

00:19:13And some are going to screw him.

00:19:14And some are going to be great, great for him.

00:19:16And some are going to do something in the middle.

00:19:19Like, like a Chris Jericho kind of is at the moment in the way that he's operating.

00:19:23And, I don't know, that's a good sign.

00:19:26Because would 2022 water guzzling sat at the table while CM Punk does what he does?

00:19:31Would that, would that Tony Khan?

00:19:32I'm not going to f***ing stand around and take the s*** anymore.

00:19:37Like, I think it's a different guy.

00:19:42I think it's a weather-beaten, but in a good ways guy.

00:19:45He was like 40 back then.

00:19:47Now he's 43.

00:19:50I do like the idea of grizzle Tony Khan.

00:19:53It's a brutal game, isn't it?

00:19:55It does sort of feel like he's kind of, he's come out the other side of that.

00:20:00Like, he was pretty frank about, like, you know, I think it's pretty clear that, like, with Collision,

00:20:04I made every effort to reconcile and it just wasn't in the cards.

00:20:08It's like, that's the nicest way of saying,

00:20:10He was untenable.

00:20:11I gave him everything.

00:20:12I was chanting his f***ing name back there.

00:20:14I'm still, I mean, that's that for him with the young, but.

00:20:17I still think it goes all the way back to 2020.

00:20:20And he doesn't.

00:20:21I'm inferring.

00:20:22You know we infer sometimes.

00:20:25I think Tony Khan.
