We all are excited to watch Sonny Styles this season, but what other rookies are we looking forward to seeing?
Transcript
00:00And there is obviously incredible excitement about Styles,
00:03seventh overall pick.
00:06But the rest of this draft class, when I was out there two nights ago,
00:10I got to ask Anthony Lynn about K-Tron Allen, the fat man.
00:16And Lynn said he is really excited.
00:21Lynn also said the reason Bill hasn't been going is it was just a little
00:25hammy thing that they'd just rather give him rest.
00:27I think that tracks with what we've seen.
00:31But Lynn was saying how excited he is about K-Tron Allen and that K-Tron
00:35Allen is the type of player that's going to look a lot better once pads are on.
00:40Yeah.
00:40Yeah.
00:41And Lynn's just –
00:42Because he's that straight-ahead physical type dude.
00:44Totally.
00:45800-636-1067.
00:47800-636-1067.
00:49So I talked to Anthony Lynn, and one thing I thought was really interesting,
00:55Lynn straight up told me, yeah, you know, with K-Tron,
00:59and he reminds me of Chris Rodriguez.
01:01And that's exactly the role they need to fill.
01:04Mm-hmm.
01:05Then you start talking to guys about Josh Josephs, the DN they got out of Tennessee
01:10in the fifth round.
01:11Mm-hmm.
01:12And some of the excitement surrounding him.
01:15His athleticism score was really good for a fifth round pick.
01:18The straight sack production was never that high at Tennessee.
01:23And I thought, talking to some SEC people I know, there was like an expectation that he
01:29could kind of have a burst, a breakout, if you will, senior season at Tennessee.
01:35And it didn't really happen.
01:37Mm-hmm.
01:38The TFLs have been there.
01:39I also think – and I talked to him about this at rookie camp.
01:46I find it very unique, Brian, for a DN – listen, DNs are generally judged on sacks.
01:55But this dude has an incredible wingspan, right?
01:59Yeah.
01:59He has the wingspan of like probably A.J.
02:02DeBansa or something.
02:03Like he has a NBA – excuse me.
02:07He has like an NBA three wingspan.
02:11Okay.
02:11Which is all well and good.
02:13Yeah.
02:14It doesn't really – like you can have a big wingspan, short wingspan.
02:17It's what you do with it, right?
02:18Mm-hmm.
02:19But the people with the long arms and stuff, long wingspan normally gets the benefit of
02:23the doubt.
02:24But dude, here's what I like.
02:27There is real on-ball production that I think is a result of that wingspan.
02:33Look at his last two years at Tennessee.
02:35Three passes defense, three forced fumbles each season.
02:41That's a guy that knows how to use his arms to get to the football.
02:45Mm-hmm.
02:45And I asked him about it.
02:47He's like, man, you got to get the ball.
02:49You get the ball, you get the money.
02:51And I just – I thought that was a really interesting answer.
02:54He forced three fumbles each of his last two seasons at Tennessee, recovered to three
03:00passes defense each season.
03:04And I think where that wingspan might impact games, the sack production is not exactly
03:11there.
03:12He had one and a half as a junior, four last year as a senior.
03:15But he had 15 TFLs over the last two years.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Which, like, if you're able to disrupt in the run game, even off the edge, is a hell
03:24of a skill.
03:25Could they have been running the ball a lot on him where his sack production was down?
03:29Or –
03:29Because I think the arm length helps you from getting – from those tackles getting their
03:34hands on you.
03:36And if he learns some more moves and better techniques at this pro level, he can have
03:43one of those breakout-type years.
03:44So here's the question for the phones.
03:46What rookie are you most excited about?
03:48It's okay if that answer is Sonny Stiles.
03:50I imagine a lot of people, it's Sonny Stiles.
03:52But you go further down this draft class, and there's a lot of interesting pieces.
03:56We haven't even discussed Antonio Williams, the third-round wide receiver.
04:00Let's go to JP in D.C.
04:01I thought I was JP in D.C.
04:03What's up, dude?
04:06JP, what's up, man?
04:09Hey, man, what's going on?
04:10I'm sorry, man.
04:11Hey, I was still here looking at y'all and everything like that, man.
04:14Shout-out to D.Mitch and Finley, everybody.
04:18Shout-out to dudes named JP.
04:19I think Sonny Stiles is going to be special.
04:23I think he's going to be like a nut, a Chantel or something like that, man.
04:27I think he's going to be that special.
04:29I might be going off the wall or whatever it is, but I just think that way.
04:34Also, A.B.
04:35Mitch, man, I got a whole bunch of autographs from Carlisle when y'all used to practice
04:40two days, two times a day, stuff like that.
04:44And at the same time, I really want to put it back into the skin's hands and stuff like
04:48that.
04:49And there's something we can talk about later or something like that.
04:52But, yeah, I think that dude is going to be special.
04:54All right, bro.
04:55Appreciate the call, dude.
04:57Phone lines are open, 800-636-1067.
05:00Who's the rookie you're most excited for?
05:02I think with Joseph's, one thing that I think is really important to realize, when you're
05:10drafting players, especially once you get to Saturday, like fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh
05:16rounds, you're just looking for production.
05:19You're just looking for guys that are going to make the team and contribute, right?
05:23And if somebody breaks out further from there, that's great.
05:26But, like, I remember when they drafted John Bates, and I went and watched some of the
05:32Bates tape from Boise.
05:36And I said then, I was like, this dude's going to be a 10-year pro.
05:39Like, just the way he can block, he's going to be a 10-year pro.
05:43And John Bates, for his draft status, has been an incredibly productive player.
05:47And I look at Joshua Josephs.
05:49I look at the measurables.
05:50I look at that arm length.
05:52And then I start to kind of project.
05:55Now, I don't know what kind of person he is, right?
05:58We're going to learn.
05:59I actually really liked him in the first time I got to speak to him.
06:02So I talked to him for like 10, 15 minutes.
06:06Yeah, maybe less than that.
06:07Probably 10.
06:07But you just look at measurables and some of the stats from Tennessee.
06:14So they list him at 6'3", 240.
06:18But 6'3", with really, really long arms.
06:22Plays a little bigger than that.
06:24And then you start to look at the numbers, especially the tackles and the TFLs.
06:30I mean, his wingspan is 70 inches.
06:33And I don't know that this is a fair comp, but Washington has a D-end on their roster who's
06:39best known for setting the edge.
06:40That's Dietrich Weiss.
06:42Dietrich Weiss was a fourth-rounder out of Arkansas.
06:44So you've got a similar SEC pedigree here.
06:48Dietrich Weiss is going into year 10.
06:50How big is Joshua Joseph?
06:52He doesn't have the same heft.
06:54The bulk that Weiss is.
06:55That comes all the time.
06:56But that can come.
06:57When you're a young guy, as you get older, you'll gain some weight.
07:01Especially if you're lifting and eating on an NFL plan.
07:06Weiss, they list at 6'5", 280.
07:08That's a big man.
07:10Joseph's, they list 6'3", and an 8, 242.
07:13Okay.
07:14So, like, I just...
07:1525 more.
07:16You try to project where you think a player can go.
07:20And the arm length there really just intrigues me.
07:25And he does a great job.
07:27Like, with that arm length, when you talk about setting the edge, think about how much more he gets to
07:34the perimeter with that.
07:35You know what I mean?
07:36It's intriguing.
07:37He's going to have to make sure he's strong at the point and have a strong base, too.
07:41Just be having that arm length.
07:42If his arm length is just long and he ain't got no strength with it, somebody's going to collapse that.
07:46A hundred percent.
07:47Let's go to Anthony in Martinsville.
07:49Anthony, who's the rookie you're most excited for?
07:53Hey, what's going on?
07:54B-Mitch, Stanley.
07:55How y'all doing today?
07:56Good, buddy.
07:57Hey, listen.
07:58Listen, I'm most excited to see rookie offensive coordinator David Blau and rookie running back, Fat Man.
08:07I think that Fat Man is going to wind up being, you know, the starter, the main ball carrier by
08:14the end of the season.
08:14And I think that, uh, I think, uh, Coffee Murray is going to wind up being like a second down,
08:21well, I mean, a third down back by the end of the season.
08:25Well, they have which guy I'm here to do that.
08:28Rashad White.
08:29Rashad White's going to have a role.
08:31Okay, okay, okay.
08:33But yeah, I don't think Bill's going anywhere.
08:35I think it's going to be, I appreciate the call, Anthony.
08:38And that's a great call.
08:39David Blau's a rookie, too.
08:40And if that's the dude you're most excited for, I think that's fair.
08:43Because this offense is going to look different.
08:45Folks are really excited about it.
08:47Talking to coaches, talking to players.
08:49I think players are really excited for a fresh new system.
08:53Hell yeah.
08:53And I think the time has come for it.
08:57But, um, the way I view the running back room, B, I think all these guys are going to have
09:04work.
09:07Like, I think Bill has work.
09:09I think Fat Man is kind of your short yardage guy.
09:13He's got to prove he can do that.
09:14But I think Fat Man has a role.
09:15I think Rashad White's going to have a role for sure.
09:18Yeah, I think, I think, uh, what's it called?
09:20No, K-Tron is a little bit more than just a power back.
09:23If you look at the amount of, look at how he played at Penn State.
09:26He can give you way more than that.
09:28That may be his role as a, as early, early on.
09:33But I believe he could be a guy who go out there and carry the ball first, second, third,
09:36and catch that backfield too.
09:38But he's a, he's a guy who has the mindset of get it.
09:43You know, a lot of running backs want to go the distance.
09:47You got to have a mindset of get it.
09:48Because that thing blocked for three yards, get three.
09:50Maybe get four.
09:51But don't try to get 20 and lose three.
09:54Yeah.
09:55So, and I think Bill was quite good last year, but there were times where he was a rookie
10:01that hadn't played in a year and you saw it.
10:03And, and frankly, he put the ball on the ground a couple of times that cost him some carries
10:07in the middle part of the season.
10:09I wonder the, the dude, Manung guy on the bears was a rookie last season.
10:14I think out of Rutgers.
10:15Does that sound right?
10:16Um, as the season went on, he really started to emerge.
10:22He was a seventh rounder out of Rutgers.
10:25And as the season went on, he got better and better.
10:29Right.
10:30And then if you watch him in the playoffs, he was just a monster, um, runs hard, upright runner.
10:36I think if, if you want to project out for the fat man, you're kind of thinking something
10:43similar.
10:44Manung guy's listed five, eight, two Oh seven.
10:47Get me, uh, my computer's being funky.
10:49Get me fat man's listing.
10:52I, I would think there's some similarities there.
10:54So if you look at Manung guy, he was really not too productive.
10:59The first like five weeks of the season, week six against what was then a terrible saints
11:04team was kind of the first breakout, right?
11:06He had 13 for 81 with a touchdown, his first NFL touchdown.
11:10You get two weeks later against the bangles.
11:12He goes 26 for one 76, almost seven yards of carry.
11:17And then the second half of the season, the production really starts to kind of ramp up.
11:23I think that's what you hope for K-Tron is that like, it's a, it's a build over the
11:28course of the season.
11:29K-Tron is 5-11-2-17.
11:32Okay.
11:32K-Tron is 5-11-2-17.
11:34Gotcha.
11:35So I think there's some similarities there, especially like power runners on the interior.
11:40Uh, let's go to Alex in Silver Spring.
11:42What's up, Alex?
11:44What's going on, fellas?
11:46What's up, man?
11:46I want to say Williams.
11:49I want to see Williams.
11:50Is that why I received him?
11:51Uh, whoever they bring in.
11:53Besides McCorn.
11:54Or you never know.
11:55He might be the one to take over the other side.
11:58I wouldn't be surprised.
11:59Uh, so I want to see how he, uh, falls out, what he can do.
12:03And, uh, that's it, man.
12:06We need a wide receiver.
12:07He's there.
12:07Appreciate you, man.
12:08Appreciate you guys.
12:09B, what rookie are you most excited to see?
12:12Uh, both.
12:13I'm looking at the two offensive players, uh, Williams and, uh, K-Tron.
12:18Because, you know, watching K-Tron in high school and then watching him in Penn State, he does the instinctive
12:26things of running backs.
12:27Where he just get the damn yards.
12:29He's not there looking to be pretty.
12:31Not there dancing around.
12:32And then you look at a guy like Williams.
12:35I love when I hear people say a guy is too small and then the other guy that they, they,
12:39they clamoring for is the exact same size as that guy.
12:42But you watch that dude.
12:43He knows how to get separation.
12:44He knows how to run routes.
12:45If you're a route runner, you get open in the NFL.
12:49And he's a route runner.
12:50So, I wanted to see if he can come in here and just continue on what he's been doing.
12:55He's going to have to learn more at this level.
12:57But I believe he could be vital to the production of the passing game this year.
13:02They need him to be.
13:03Uh, let's go to our guy, Tricky, in D.C.
13:07Tricky, what's up, man?
13:09What's up, B-Mitch?
13:10Stanley?
13:11What's up, brother?
13:12Hey, look.
13:13Have y'all heard any buzz about Robert Henry Jr.?
13:16Because I'm, I'm real high on him.
13:18I think he's going to really contribute this year.
13:21I love that call.
13:22I mean, you're talking about an undrafted guy out of UTSA?
13:25That's your, that's your guy to watch?
13:27Talk to me.
13:28I am here for this.
13:30Yes, sir.
13:32Why?
13:34I, I just think, I think that, well, I, I mean, I might be getting ahead of myself.
13:39Get ahead of yourself.
13:40Let's have some fun on, if you're going to call in about an undrafted guy out of UTSA,
13:45I am here for this call.
13:47I think, and I don't know if y'all remember, last year I was the first, I called about K
13:52.O.
13:5351.
13:54I called about him.
13:54That was my first call last year.
13:56Yeah.
13:57Um, Robert Henry Jr., I think he better than Bill.
14:00I, I, I really do.
14:01And I, like I say, I might be going too far.
14:04All right.
14:04He had, I think what got Henry to the pros, remember how good that Texas A&M defense was?
14:11Mm-hmm.
14:12He went for a buck 70 and two touchdowns against the Aggies.
14:15Yep.
14:15Yep.
14:16I mean, that, that put him on the NFL map for sure.
14:22Jeffrey, you're also fired up about Robert Henry Jr.?
14:25He runs with bad intentions.
14:28He, he, I, I'm waiting to see him too.
14:31If he run any way how he ran in college, if that like transcends to the pros, we got to
14:36go back on our hands.
14:37I'm, I'm rooting for him.
14:38All right.
14:39That, I, I'm into this, fellas.
14:41I love the deep cuts, dude.
14:43I think Robert Henry Jr. could be an early, so Tichler and I always do this.
14:49We'll have to do this as we get closer to preseason, where we pick who finishes the preseason with the
14:54most catches, the most receiving yards, the most rushing yards.
14:57Robert Henry Jr. would be an intriguing pick for that because.
15:00I want to see.
15:00A rookie, an undrafted rookie running back is going to get some carries in the preseason.
15:05Who else is an undrafted rookie running back?
15:07No, Bill was drafted.
15:08Bill was a seventh.
15:09Drafted seventh.
