00:00internally they might be doing something different than what it is externally but internally i don't
00:05think that there's a i don't think as of right now jake they've told any quarterback you're our
00:09starter week one and then our and plan to enter training camp with that being the plan no i don't
00:14think so i don't think you've gotten that and i mean certainly externally they haven't told us
00:19anything close to that like todd's still basically playing the hey like one guy more this day and
00:24then the next day it's the other guy like he's still sticking at least it seems to pretty firm
00:28to that yeah i mean again and i like to just kind of open up that idea because if i
00:33we've just played
00:34at chauncey's poker table one too many times okay i've played this game and it'd be rigged in fact i
00:38was talking to a uh one of these shidor fans in colorado earlier today we're going back and forth
00:43and some of the dms one of the guys he's been around from the very beginning he's been around
00:47right and he was telling me he's like i just i still don't believe that this is going to be
00:52a
00:52real competition i just there's he's like i it's good they're going to name to sean the starter week
00:55one and this is just how this is going to go and anything they've said over the past couple weeks
01:00it's all just not real he's just not buying it and i i don't know i'm not saying he speaks
01:04for the
01:05entirety of colorado fans and i know 99 of people listening right now don't even care what colorado
01:10fans think anyway right uh but the people that want to see should or succeed still don't know if
01:15this competition is on the up and up and they don't know whether or not the decision has already
01:19been made and whether this is a real competition i think it is a real competition though all i can
01:25tell
01:25you right now and when it comes down to who's winning and who's not winning this thing jake
01:29i don't think our reads are too far apart i i think deshaun had a nice day for himself
01:36if you want to call it neck and neck call it whatever you want but this thing isn't done
01:39no it's far from done but this is the problem that i'm going to have with the sentiment that
01:44you're being sent and i'm not saying that this individual will think it but there will be far many
01:48too many that do is that if deshaun does go out and win this quarterback competition right and
01:53we can see it with our own two eyes deshaun it's neck and neck i think if you sit through
01:57this and
01:57you go well it's a good short it's a good deshaun day and deshaun gets named the quarterback
02:00i'm not going to agree with it but i'm going to understand how you get to that answer as todd
02:05monk it is maybe that guy can win me more games i'll disagree but i know how you get there
02:09or if
02:09deshaun just wins it with our own two eyes there are going to be far too many people that sit
02:13there
02:13and go it was rigged the whole time they were always going to do it if they made it after
02:18the like
02:18three installs the way that it seemed like it was going right i'd be the i'd be the first one
02:23i get
02:23if uh and fairly yeah and even today i'm going to be truthful about it especially after the the
02:28past couple games or past couple practices we've had if after this practice today munkin would have
02:33came out and said all right we've decided deshaun watson's going to be our starting quarterback week
02:38one i don't know that the fcc could have helped me back today i i don't know who would have
02:44been
02:45able to reign me in i don't know i don't know what i would have done i know what i
02:48would have said
02:48i would have been very angry about the process i would have gone down this whole path about how
02:52you had chador playing uh good football you keep telling us how he's playing good football he has
02:57the throws of camp over the previous couple days all these things and you're not even going to see
03:02it into training camp you're just going to give deshaun watson the job blindly meanwhile he's throwing
03:07passes that miss receivers by 10 yards like i i would have been infuriated and so i think what
03:13munkin is doing with this is the right mentality and he's taking the right approach again mary k
03:18brings up an interesting curveball internally maybe something's already been said and it's been done
03:22but the way i can see it right now and how i'm calling it right now it seems like it's
03:27been a
03:27pretty fair race all things considered i mean i like everything that i've seen i just i do hate that
03:31idea because i do think that if deshaun is named the week one star we have that idea only because
03:36of
03:36what happened last year i know but if it if it plays out in front of my eyes and i
03:40can see deshaun
03:41even reasonably being named the starter like i have to see him play well the knowing the playbook
03:47better operation of the offense doesn't do anything for me at the end of the day is a quarterback your
03:51job is to throw the football and complete passes if you can't do that as well as the other guy
03:54you're not going to win me any more games but if i see them on the same level or deshaun
03:58be better
03:58i can accept that when i open the competition you had to be open if you're okay with shador competing
04:03for the job you're okay with shador losing the job right like you had to be okay with that if
04:08you
04:08were open to a competition the idea that he did not come out and take the reins and win it
04:12so the
04:13fact that deshaun gets named a starter does not immediately point us to this was rigged all along
04:18doesn't immediately point us away from it it's a possibility to get there but i hate that i know
04:23that's going to be the response from a lot of people is well shador didn't win so it had to
04:27be
04:27rigged i think if you take this thing further i think then that that goes away right and you keep
04:31giving them reps and opportunities i think that goes away and so that is part of this if you're the
04:36browns and this is this is where the internally part of things that mary kay mentioned kind of
04:40has me thrown a little bit because if you're the browns and you're trying to present this as a real
04:45battle as something that is actually competitive you would be doing and operating the way that the
04:49browns are again because they've convinced me that this one is on the up and up as of right now
04:54they did not announce anything today everything seems like it's clear and shador has got a chance
04:59we'll go with this but there's something else that has kind of just been bugging me about this
05:03competition i want you guys input 216474 to below 92 has shador closed the gap in the competition
05:11i don't love the narrative that is being put out there that if shador doesn't win the job somehow
05:18that's best for him i just fundamentally disagree with the idea that not getting an opportunity
05:24and waiting for week eight or nine or ten is what's best in anyone's interest when they're trying
05:31to be an nfl starter i think i i i can't wrap my head around how just i i just
05:36i'm just gonna call
05:37it stupid i just think i think it's patently stupid to think that it somehow benefits a player
05:43to sit on the bench and watch somebody else be given an opportunity and uh because of the
05:48development that'll attach to it or the offensive line development or the wide receivers all this
05:53other hogwash that can be attached to this it's somehow going to be better to watch deshaun
05:57watson start week one i just can't get behind and ian rapaport was on the nfl network and he was
06:01espousing some of these thoughts is not at necessarily ian uh this is more than just him
06:06are trying to make this claim but here we go back to what you said judy about so much being
06:10put on the
06:11quarterback that does bode well for deshaun watson and the reality is to me at least if deshaun watson
06:16is a cleveland brown starting quarterback to begin this season that is okay and in some ways that's kind of
06:21the best case scenario because you still don't know exactly what you have in shador him sitting
06:26and waiting and learning he's got some playing time but him sitting waiting and learning is not
06:30the worst thing in the world and you really would like to see what the future holds for deshaun watson
06:36and he mentioned some of the reasons why we have not seen a lot from him he has not been
06:40healthy
06:41certainly not lately and when he has played he has been hampered by some of those injuries how good
06:46can he be and can he be the quarterback that the cleveland browns thought they traded for like
06:51five years ago the answer is maybe maybe i wouldn't be surprised in the end if he ends up as
06:58the
06:58cleveland browns starting quarterback and if he plays himself into being the starter for 2027
07:03well that only adds the fascinating situation for people and this is where i tell you i feel like we're
07:08all at the blackjack table we're playing the same game but we're definitely playing different hands
07:11how do you get a scenario basically what he's trying to do is turn him into what happened
07:16with drake may in drake may's rookie season all right wait six games and then jacoby brissette
07:21will start and you'll be better off for it you want to know why that was a good plan for
07:24drake may
07:25because drake may didn't have just a four win season to be evaluated by if you just evaluated drake may
07:30off of that season and that season alone you wouldn't leave thinking drake may is the guy you'd be like
07:36all right as a fifth round pick i guess he just is what he is no but drake may obviously
07:41had more
07:42opportunity than that and was going to have a long road to be able to showcase what he can do
07:46shador's got as many games as you give him this year to showcase that he can be an nfl quarterback
07:51that's it why would you ever opt to have fewer games in this scenario because i am usually pro like
07:58give quarterbacks a little bit time to develop uh if it's in the right situation like i think when you
08:04have like jordan love backing up aaron rogers you can learn a lot watching aaron rogers play quarterback
08:08and how he handles him maybe not off the field handles himself but on the field he's obviously
08:12a great player yeah sitting and learning behind deshaun watson who has played 19 games in four
08:17years has constantly been injured and i mean has not operated the offense to the effect that it was
08:22supposed to be operated with kevin stefanski what are you learning and this is if you start your
08:28career on the bench behind somebody patrick mahomes getting a whole year to develop great he's already
08:34played like he already understands he's already had to go through the learning curve of
08:38were you ready for this like could you have used the extra year development for shador i don't know
08:42right i'm not in the building he's also assured the long runway patrick mahomes knew he was going
08:47to have multiple years to try to figure it out shador's got this season browns if this season
08:53doesn't go well the browns are taking a quarterback in 2027 that's the reality and so why would you limit
08:59yourself to opportunities and i would make an even further argument if deshaun watson starts and plays
09:04let's say 10 games and get you to week 11 by and then they rip you know rip the band
09:08-aid off and
09:09say all right this isn't good we don't want to do this shador you're up i've got eight games is
09:16that
09:16what i got i got eight games to try to showcase that you don't need to take a quarterback in
09:19the
09:202027 draft that's a miserable chance you could play an awesome eight games no one's gonna buy that
09:25it's real everyone's gonna think oh that was just a great eight games i'm not gonna i'm not gonna
09:30sacrifice drafting dante moore arch manning for that i'm gonna go ahead and draft those guys and
09:35shador you guess you're a good backup now like he needs the whole season and so i just get mad
09:40at
09:40the concept that this is some sort of great uh you know not even a consolation prize the prize that
09:45he should be shooting for is to back up to sean watson and start the season later because of
09:50what no you just you just don't want to see shador have a chance you don't want to do the
09:54people
09:54that think that you just don't want to give shador an opportunity and you don't want to see whether
09:58or not he can and cannot do it that's the reality just be honest with me you don't have to
10:02lie to me
10:03just be honest with me and i'll respect it much more than trying to put on some sort of fake
10:07argument
10:07that starting week nine is somehow better for someone's career when it just there's no world
10:12that exists where that's true and jp i would even love to spin this into the brown side of it
10:16i think
10:17that's a horrendous decision for themselves let alone for shador because this year is unfortunately
10:22exactly what last year was at quarterback it is a fact-finding mission you know what facts they found
10:26last year at quarterback dylan gabriel not good shador sanders hmm interesting he plays eight
10:32games this year what are the odds that even again like you said even if he plays well that the
10:36conversation just ends it hmm interesting i don't have a real answer right you need all you need all
10:4117 yes and again answer good or bad i would like an answer that's the whole point the whole point
10:48of
10:48this is to get an answer not to make sure that deshaun gets a chance to audition for other teams
10:53down
10:53the line i don't care about his audition process i care about what's best for the cleveland browns
10:58and so if you're telling me that obviously in this idea deshaun would not be good enough to maintain
11:02the job either through injury or lack of play right and so oh shador should be blessed because he'll get
11:07a chance in week 10 or week 11 all right so you're admitting on the front deshaun's just going to
11:11stink
11:11or again get injured all right so what are we doing here what are we what are you trying to
11:16build up
11:17you're just you're just limiting shador that's all you're trying to do in this in this setup
11:21you're not being intellectually honest with the conversation i think this is and it's interesting
11:26because i think for a media perspective shador should be a really interesting quarterback to
11:30cover and see what happens with him but i think for a lot of people the storyline with deshaun is
11:34even
11:34bigger it's the redemption story he's been bad he was once a great quarterback can he re-spark it
11:40and that's a great storyline for everybody nationally whereas your door i don't think it is i don't think
11:45it is i think deshaun having a great year is still deshaun the the guy that allegedly did so many
11:50bad things is all of a sudden hey uh i guess if you wait around long enough and enough people
11:55pay
11:55you a lot of money you'll get not only a second chance not only a third chance you'll get a
11:59fourth
11:59chance to maybe look good and then all of a sudden he took advantage of it like i i i
12:03think that like
12:04the comeback of the year stuff for deshaun is a disaster i don't think i don't think that plays
12:09the way you think that it does well let me change that good story i meant it's a story who
12:13grabs clicks
12:14right like that is a storyline that people for more bad than good probably pay attention to
12:20i disagree with that still i think i think shador is such a different level of fame and a different
12:24level of all of this that i think from a media perspective if shador does well that'll give you
12:29a million more clicks than you'd possibly imagine uh ever than deshaun all of a sudden having whatever
12:35redemptive story we want to dream up i could be wrong maybe i just see it wrong we just see
12:39it
12:39different it is what it is i mean i think both are obviously like high click storylines but that's the
12:43point though is that like we're not even really choosing between which one is going to get you the
12:47most attention or which one's going to get you that screw that i don't care about that nonsense
12:51i'm more focused on the idea that this feels like the people that want to say no shador you should
12:57be
12:57happy about the opportunities that you're getting in week 10 or week 11 i think that looks better for
13:02you shador it's just nonsense there's no world where it makes sense where somebody that's got one year
13:08to showcase why he's a starting quarterback in this in this league should be happy that he gets to start
13:13in week nine or week 10 yeah i mean the only argument does not make sense the only argument you
13:17have is
13:17that you don't think he's ready right now which todd munkin vehemently disagrees with he thinks he's a
13:21starting level quarterback and i think chudor proved on the field like yes does he have room to grow
13:25absolutely is he capable of starting and winning in national football league uh yeah i mean he won three
13:31of the seven games he played in that's a lot better than an handful of guys that actually played last
13:35year and have been in this league and say for themselves
13:37you
