00:00all right so we've got some dallas cowboys news of the day today is the final ota and then the
00:06mandatory minicamp start on monday and hey guess what i bet almost nothing will be talked about
00:11except where whether or not george pickens showed up and if he actually did anything you think so
00:16my prediction is he does show up and does nothing well i mean that's uh is that a good thing
00:21or bad
00:21thing i think that is still bad thing okay now will he do nothing because it's the hold-in or
00:28will he do nothing because he's not up to speed um i don't know like that's a you know the
00:33ramp up
00:34process right i feel like the ramp up process though well okay let me actually i know a little
00:40more than i used to know about this the ramp up process we used to feel like it just was
00:43about
00:44training camp sure but one of the things that they like to do and bobby was talking about this the
00:49other day is they have like very specific numbers that they track on these guys yeah and sometimes
00:54the uh ramp up process does have to do with they got to get their base numbers for you so
00:59for a guy
01:00like jalen thompson who was dealing with a little something uh they still needed to get some base
01:04numbers on him because they didn't have anything to track from last year for him so with pickens if
01:09he was keeping up with program while he was off uh those base numbers should still be there but hey
01:15you know we got to figure out we got to come in measure you do all those things and get
01:18those numbers
01:19so we can get you squared away for where we're heading next for this so maybe you're right maybe
01:23he isn't exactly where he's supposed to be and they're like it's not worth it uh we just need
01:28you to stand there and know where to be and we'll move you around but right now it's not worth
01:32it to
01:32get you out there uh running and everything at full speed or or risking anything because that's
01:38isn't that what shot he was saying yesterday when he opened was like these look they're important to
01:42us but we don't need them running around playing real football right right right now speaking of
01:48like frequently real football gets kind of tossed to the side because seven on seven and shoddy's
01:53talked about that quite a bit but i want to talk about clayton adams and tyler booker so there's been
02:01a lot of attention picked up on clayton adams as potentially a future head coach and one of the
02:09things that tyler booker said about him is he's got the characteristics of a man who could lead other
02:14men so i'm very excited to go out there and score points with him this season that's good and so
02:19obviously you love that and then tyler booker kind of talking about his own like improvement or
02:25maturation and one of the things he said this year compared to last year which makes a whole lot of
02:30sense because like you haven't even played an nfl game yet at this point last year he goes i'm so
02:35much more confident i'm able to play a lot faster so rather than me thinking about where is this play
02:41going i know where my hands are supposed to be what my angle is and i'm able to focus that
02:47much more
02:47on my technique now i know injury slowed him down for a second but it feels like it was a
02:52very positive
02:53rookie year and then when you hear tyler booker say i am more sure and more understanding of what
02:59i'm supposed to do that can't help but make you think oh are we about to see another jump up
03:04for him
03:05well even even better that allows him to be more creative too right with the way that he does things
03:10very similar to what we were just talking about with evan carter right uh and what skip was telling
03:14us about these guys and we're kind of relearning what their goals are and what their jobs are
03:18when you go line up you're not thinking about all these other things uh you're already that's like
03:24that's instinct like that's just part of it so for a guy like tyler booker who we already know
03:28has the power uh and and the the mobility and all those things that we saw the intelligence part of
03:34and now that it's second nature to him he should take that next step up i love what you heard
03:39about
03:39clayton adams there though kevin yeah uh because you're one of those people that's like let's not
03:44just stay uh where we are because it's good for sure let's see what the next thing is and hearing
03:50him this offseason talk about we were good as an offense last year but how can we be better uh
03:56like
03:57he's not one of those that's just like yeah we're going to go out there and run it back the
04:00same way
04:00it's going to be good he's already developing things because he knows a the league is going to come
04:05fine figure out what you did and yeah sure they like we said uh with pickens last year that slant
04:12route was unstoppable until they said we got to bring a safety down all right now they bring a
04:17safety down it's going to logically open up yeah so now what do you do you either go deep to
04:21flannoy
04:21you go deep you say pickens you're going to do a stutter you're going to do all sorts you got
04:25all
04:25these things that you could do and uh and so clayton adams is like let me go draw some more
04:30up he's
04:30creative with the offense the way he does it but he's also one of those guys that's like driving
04:34these guys to be better i i knew i mean when they hired him all we heard was good things
04:39and so i'm
04:40glad to have him back i'm just going to need him to be more creative and the cowboys to be
04:44more
04:45creative in the red zone okay all right so yeah they were bad last year some numbers crunch once
04:51again thank you for some assistance on this from mickey spagnola as you look at the cowboys in the
04:56red zone they scored a touchdown 57 of the time in the red zone that is 18th so almost exactly
05:04average in the nfl and they kicked 17 field goals in this run so that's going to be in the
05:13red zone in
05:14the red zone so that's way too many and then think about this they turn the ball over 11 times
05:21in the
05:22red zone five times they actually turned it over and then the other six were on downs so essentially
05:29one sixth of the time they get into the red zone they turn the ball over okay which that
05:36obviously that is unacceptable a couple of other things and i think i really need to take a look
05:42at this and i hope this gets a lot better and i really like jamonte williams and we just were
05:46talking positively about tyler booker and to a certain extent the offensive line but the cowboys
05:52only ran the ball into the end zone 11 times all of those were from inside the 10 so there's
05:58no
05:59scoring for them between the 10 and the 20 running the ball like it is it was an impossibility for
06:05them
06:05last year and then they had goal to go six times that they kicked a field goal okay so it's
06:12first and
06:13goal second goal you know that's bad yeah that's 24th in the league yeah so when i say average overall
06:18scoring touchdowns across offense was striking from 40 in or even deeper yeah or but yeah but once
06:25they got into the 20 they were average at scoring a touchdown but in goal to go situations they were
06:31bottom third when it or bottom fourth excuse me when it came to having to kick field goals in goal
06:37to
06:37go situations and how many games did you see like kind of go right down to the wire and as
06:42much as we
06:43think this defense hopefully will be improved it's not like it's going to be that much improved
06:47they're going to be like meh kick a field goal well and i mean as you're even saying there too
06:52if
06:52you're if you're talking about the defense being a little bit better if your offense can be a little
06:56bit better not for sure not regress then then uh you can be that much more of an explosive and
07:01dynamic
07:02team uh but i there's there's two things that i don't love in the red zone from the cowboys it
07:08feels
07:08like once you get inside the 10 shoddy tries to get really uh really you know tricky right he's like
07:15i'm
07:15man we're gonna pass it really does i'm gonna score a touch like they don't even know what's
07:19about to happen and i'm like dude like you can run the ball but as you just pointed out gold
07:23go they
07:24had some tough situations there um i do see a world where once you get inside the 20 jayden blue
07:30can
07:30can create some explosive plays for you uh because of his speed i'm not asking him to go power a
07:37shoulder over anybody but i definitely think that he can pick up six yards seven yards faster
07:42uh than javante can javante is gonna he's a steady train right uh he is he's gonna he's gonna get
07:48you what you need a lot of times uh but and there have been there were plenty of plays drawn
07:53up for
07:53him last year that got big plays downfield i mean we saw the one but he you know gassed out
07:58at like
07:59the five yard line uh but right but again he's not the home run hitter i'm asking i'm just asking
08:04him
08:04to be the dude that's carrying the rock a lot okay blue's the one that i'm gonna need some extra
08:08stuff
08:09from and i do wonder how ferguson uh steps into this role because that feels like a natural fit
08:15for more touchdown opportunities what do you know about gronk yeah he scores touchdown is the expert
08:22in the red zone yes smarter than everybody as as dumb as people like to think gronk is when it
08:28comes
08:28to perpetuates that yeah no he definitely does when it comes to what they did in the red zone him
08:33and tom
08:33brady he was just as intelligent uh making sure he knew what he was doing and finding the soft spot
08:40or you know making sure that he boxed somebody out with his body and ferguson's gonna have to become
08:45one of those dudes too if you're gonna he's gonna have to be a weapon in the red zone he
08:48can't just
08:49be those receivers now maybe i'll see it today maybe a little bit mandatory mini camp i think you'll see
08:54it a lot more at training camp are you fascinated by the combination and then i guess rotation
09:01of malachi lawrence and donovan ezaraku because they're both early really early in their development
09:11and you know i'm interested to see how they continue to fare not only rushing the passer but
09:17also being able to stop the run because that feels like that could be the difference between those two
09:22do you view them more in cooperation or competition um more cooperation okay i did think easy got better
09:33last year at you know pinching down and stopping there were some embarrassing moments for him last
09:38year right and you know some of that is teaching and not knowing your responsibility i think whenever
09:44you're a lot of times with this cowboys team you as a coach have to be a teacher to all
09:49all all ranges veterans and rookies especially since the cowboys put a lot of uh emphasis on their
09:56younger class and that's important to them and ezaraku came in last year and i think iberflus was like
10:02he knows how to play football uh these are things that are expected of you to know and then he
10:07had to
10:07learn that over time with lawrence i need to give him a lot more leeway and i need to give
10:13put him
10:13in positions to uh position positions to succeed you know what i mean like i can't i can't go out
10:20and do what i or maybe i do maybe you need to throw him out there but it's going to
10:22be the detriment to
10:23your team see and i wonder if you're going to try to throw him out there or if they'll be
10:28like hey
10:28rashaun gary's better at stopping the run so he's going to get the early opportunities more than lawrence
10:34which i'm sure will really irritate some people looking back at the draft we're the knc masterpiece right
10:39here on 105 through the fan
