00:14After further review, intricacies and important plays that you might have missed
00:19from the Cowboys' heartbreaking loss to the Ravens.
00:25And do you think that's a fair thing to say, heartbreaking loss?
00:27Um, I think it's stunning the way that they lost.
00:32Okay.
00:32Heartbreaking the way that they lost.
00:34I don't, I'm, what was the vibe Friday going into this weekend?
00:39They were going to get crushed.
00:40Okay, so then your expectations changed when you thought you could win.
00:44100%.
00:44That's why you were stunned in the way that you lost.
00:47Yes.
00:47If you told me going in you're going to lose by three, I'd be like, oh, okay.
00:51Anybody right now that, like, is complaining about it afterwards,
00:55they're complaining about something that they never really had expectations for in the first place.
01:00They're just, they know they're going to be right in their complaint.
01:04So they get to win for this week, I guess, which I guess feels good for you.
01:09But I'd rather win the actual game and be wrong.
01:11Yeah, I think this is the, it was heartbreaking the way that they lost.
01:16To answer your question.
01:19All right.
01:20Do you mind if I start on this?
01:21I don't know if there are particular sequences that y'all want to go to.
01:24You've always been a starter, Kevin.
01:25All right.
01:25My mind.
01:26Take me to 924 left in the second quarter.
01:33You have a fourth and one from the Ravens 44.
01:37I love the call to go for it, but I hate that the Cowboys call a timeout first.
01:43Okay.
01:44This is, and I will tell you this, this is just a longstanding football belief that I have.
01:51I think if you're going to go for it, you go for it right then and right there.
01:56Because if you call a timeout, I realize the reason you call a timeout is like,
02:00hey, we want to make the perfect formation, everything like that.
02:02But you also give the defense a chance to regroup, the regroup.
02:06The thing I like about going for it on fourth down is you are in control of the situation knowing,
02:11hey, we're about to go for it, where the defense might be, I don't know, 50-50, 60-40,
02:16that you're like, are they going to go for it or not?
02:18And so they're going to have to hustle and make some moves.
02:21And then potentially you could draw them into needing a call a timeout.
02:25So I've also always thought that you should line up on that fourth and one with about 15 seconds left
02:34on the play clock
02:35and do the fake count for 10 seconds.
02:38And then the announcers are like, well, they're obviously not.
02:41And then, boom, snap the ball.
02:43Quarterback sneak or something like that.
02:44Because I think you can lull the defense into a false sense of security.
02:47But let's put that to the side for the moment.
02:49I hated that they called a timeout right there.
02:51I really did.
02:52And then I also hated the call on the play.
02:57You have one-on-ones with both Seedy and Pickens on that play.
03:02Like, take a look at it.
03:04Because the Ravens are gearing up for a run.
03:06And that's exactly what happened.
03:07And look, if Javante makes a small cut, or he made a small cut instead of going further to the
03:14outside.
03:14If he goes further to the outside, the first down looks like it could be there.
03:18And then all of this is kind of a moot point.
03:21But you line up, and I realize it's just one yard.
03:26But you have Seedy one-on-one.
03:28You have Pickens one-on-one on the other side.
03:31We can't get the ball to one of those people one-on-one?
03:35I didn't like the call.
03:36I like the call to go for it.
03:37I didn't like the ensuing play call at all.
03:40Okay.
03:41And that's very fair.
03:45I got two plays that really stick out in my mind.
03:48And one of them, Schottenheimer, detailed yesterday.
03:51Have you seen that conversation?
03:53I don't think so.
03:53This was the play that I said Dak overthrew George Pickens on purpose.
03:58Because...
03:59Was this the cut back into the pylon or a different one?
04:01Yeah, the one to cut back into the pylon.
04:03I thought Pickens ran the wrong route.
04:06What ended up happening, Schottenheimer explained it, Dak explained it too,
04:11was usually all the time the dude runs the outside leverage.
04:15I did see that, yeah.
04:17For the cornerback.
04:18And George Pickens was like, well, I'll just run the same play anyway.
04:22Dak says, I should have just drilled it in there.
04:25I should have just thrown it in there.
04:27Schottenheimer, I'm told, said that he told Dak to throw it away.
04:31And maybe that's a conversation.
04:32If he doesn't play outside, maybe it's a conversation from months ago.
04:36On this route, if this doesn't happen, just go ahead and throw it away
04:39and we'll move on.
04:40So in that moment, Kevin, we have been discussing, you want to run the ball.
04:45You want to run the ball.
04:46They lined up and didn't get what they thought they were going to get.
04:48And instead, just went with a toss it away.
04:53Dak's walking away saying, I should have done that.
04:55I read his lips wrong on that one.
04:57But I don't even think I said that on air yesterday.
04:59I think that was an off-air conversation.
05:00And so can I tell you another thing?
05:02That goes all the way back to running the 34 seconds off the clock.
05:06One of the reasons you have to throw that away is because you can't take a sack
05:11right there.
05:12Because then you're going to get no points out of that.
05:14Whereas it wouldn't be ideal.
05:16But if you had that time back, you most certainly could have risked it
05:21and taken a sack and still kicked a field goal relatively easy with the time
05:26remaining.
05:27The other thing, and this is three different plays,
05:30but it's the same play over and over, essentially.
05:32And it's the shallow cross, Zay Flowers.
05:35And it happened three different times in the game, first in the first quarter,
05:40then two times within two plays in the fourth quarter.
05:42Kevin, we saw this happen last week against the Giants, right?
05:46Same play over and over and over.
05:47They know they got something on you.
05:49You can't pick it up.
05:50And so they run it.
05:51And they got a couple of wide receivers set outside.
05:55They motion the tight end over.
05:57Now there's a three-wide receiver situation.
05:58And then they run a shallow cross to Zay Flowers.
06:02And Zay Flowers picks up big yards off of it multiple times throughout the game.
06:06That right there, Kevin, that wasn't the most critical thing.
06:11But watching that over and over is telling me that the coordinator's trying to
06:16figure out how to do in-game adjustments as well still.
06:20And when he sees something, he doesn't necessarily know,
06:24okay, they're going to bring that back in a few minutes,
06:26and I'm going to have to have a play to figure out how to stop that.
06:29Once I see it, I know exactly what we should be doing.
06:32And guess where those were going across?
06:34The faces of your linebackers.
06:35Yeah.
06:36And it happened multiple times, and it was winters a couple of different times.
06:41And those are plays right there that need to be taken care of in adjustment.
06:47Once we've seen it, you're not doing that to us again.
06:49Good luck trying.
06:51And I guess it's making me question something right now.
06:54Okay.
06:54You have a young defensive coordinator who hasn't done that part.
06:57He's done the, hey, I can prep you for the week.
07:00And I can get you prepped.
07:02Our attention to detail is going to have us looking better.
07:04But in-game adjustment, if they've done something to us,
07:07how are we going to respond to it if we see it again?
07:10Well, so far, and we can blame talent as much as we want,
07:14but the preparation's got to be there, too.
07:16Yeah, I'm with you, especially on that last part.
07:20All right, Mr. Medford, what say you?
07:24So I have a general observation,
07:25and I have a specific play that irritated me to my core.
07:29The general observation is,
07:31it sounds like the Jones boys and the coaching staff are Tolos
07:35because we said that we need to give Kenny and Quinnen some help on the interior
07:38and just give them a break.
07:41And Otito Abonia got 20% more snaps than he did two weeks ago against Washington.
07:46He had six tackles in the run game and a quarterback pressure,
07:51and I thought he was awesome as a run defender throughout that game.
07:55He was causing lots of trouble for that interior,
07:58which the interior of the Ravens' offensive line, not very good.
08:02So take that as you will.
08:03Then the play that really irritated me,
08:06it was at the very beginning of the fourth quarter,
08:08and it ended up not mattering because that was the Jayshon Barham stop
08:12on Derrick Henry on fourth down.
08:14It was that drive.
08:15So it didn't end up mattering,
08:17but it was just something that's irritated me through the first three games,
08:20which is your edges are not doing much for you in any way, shape, or form
08:25because Zay Flowers took a jet sweep on third and two, I want to say.
08:29It was the play where Revel got hurt.
08:32And Donovan Azaraku is supposed to be playing contain on the left side,
08:37and he kept his eyes in the backfield,
08:40which is the one thing they always tell you,
08:42don't do it, don't get caught looking.
08:44And Zay Flowers runs right in front of his face with the football in his hands
08:49and gets 18 yards.
08:51That is unacceptable, and that has been a theme from your edges this season
08:56is that it feels like they get caught looking or they're just slow.
08:59Wasn't that last year for him specifically?
09:02Like, Kevin, we talked so often last year about how he did not seal off the edge enough.
09:07We felt like he got a little bit better,
09:09but he's trying to be two players in one, and he wants to be an edge rusher.
09:14Well, if you're going to be, I want to be an edge rusher,
09:16you better get home a lot more than you are.
09:18And so I wonder if there's another thing about the discipline of,
09:22hey, you still have these responsibilities that go along with it,
09:26and you've got to do these things, and if you can't, you're not there.
09:28And that might be, you know, Kevin, I know I brought up with Steven yesterday
09:32the possibility of, you know, you're still missing a pass rusher.
09:35But the complete pass rusher that can go get somebody but also seal off the edge,
09:41there's a guy out there.
09:43Unfortunately, he's on a 3-0 team right now.
09:45Yeah, man, which I would not have predicted, and still I'm kind of stunned by.
09:50All right, we can go to the last sequence of events if you want,
09:55but I'd rather focus in on a different set of plays,
09:58because everyone is destroying, and rightfully so,
10:03Schoonmaker for the false start.
10:06Okay, can I give you a little note?
10:08Yeah, tell me.
10:08Yeah, Cowboys did play in 12 personnel a lot in this game,
10:14but Brevin Spanford's the tight end that needs to be on the field.
10:17Oh, yeah.
10:18So, like, your tight end combos, it needs to be Spanford,
10:21and it needs to be Ferguson, and Kevin Spanford is one of those guys
10:25that probably at this point, the more you watch him play,
10:29he's doing other things that you're like, hold on,
10:32that's what I want out of my players.
10:34So, that combination needs to be more prevalent on this team.
10:38Do the Dallas Cowboys have the most confidence in Schoonmaker
10:42disproportionate to where the fan base is at?
10:44I don't know that they do have the confidence, honestly.
10:46I think they're like, we've got to get something out of the player,
10:48and we're going to put him in situations.
10:50Ugh, I hate that.
10:51Yeah, and I think that they're just trying to squeeze it out of him,
10:55but there's nothing left in there to squeeze, bro.
10:57Okay, that might need to be a drop as well.
11:00All right, but I want to take you back to 8.55 left in the third quarter.
11:05The Cowboys take over at their own 33.
11:09At this point, they already have six offensive plays for negative yards.
11:14Six!
11:15So, you've got to do something, and you do.
11:20But it's Terrence Steele with the holding call that negates a 22-yard gain
11:26on a great catch by George Pickens.
11:30It really was very impressive, and that would have been a first down.
11:35And instead, not only do you negate the first down
11:40in the ability to keep marching down the field
11:42when you've now fallen behind 17-13,
11:46but you force it into another field goal.
11:49And it's a 59-yard field goal.
11:50And I realize people are like, oh, yeah,
11:53Brandon Aubrey's automatic from there.
11:55I still do not think we should just assume that a 59-yard field goal
11:59is going to go in, but instead, it gets blocked.
12:03And what happens after it gets blocked?
12:05It leads to an easy return back down the field for Baltimore
12:08as Dallas' run defense, probably for the first time in the game,
12:12I felt like in this moment, looked really poor again.
12:15For the first two and a half quarters, I honestly did,
12:18and look, we talked about it yesterday,
12:20I've seen the overall stats.
12:22But it really did look like the run defense was significantly better.
12:29And you had already gotten some chunk plays on that drive.
12:33You got that huge run by Javante Williams.
12:36And if you take out that penalty right there,
12:41you've got the ball now, I believe, first and 10 at the Baltimore 22.
12:45Now, can I guarantee that that equates to points?
12:50Absolutely not.
12:51Can I guarantee that it equates to a touchdown?
12:53Well, clearly not.
12:54More likely than not a block three.
12:55Exactly.
12:56Exactly.
12:56So maybe you get at least three out of it,
12:59and you keep the defense off the field for a little while longer.
13:03And you know what?
13:04I really do think you have the real potential to score a touchdown
13:08because at that point, you had already had that long drive
13:11to start the second half that ended up with a stupid shovel pass.
13:14And then you forced a three and out on the Ravens.
13:17And so the Ravens' defense is probably like, whew, Huffin and Puffins.
13:21Do you have an opportunity to flip the game back right there in your advantage?
13:25So that Terrence Steele penalty, man, I realize people are mad at Schooney,
13:29and I'm not taking that away, but that Terrence Steele penalty,
13:32that was a killer right there.
13:34Yeah.
13:35No.
13:36Kevin, I don't think that there's a lot of Terrence Steele supporters out there
13:43going, hey, it's going to be okay, guys.
13:46Hey, just something you need to remember.
13:47We can talk about this longer form at another point if you want.
13:51The Dallas Cowboys have Jake Ferguson,
13:53and they restructured Terrence Steele.
13:56And if you don't think they should be part of the future here,
13:59I'll leave that up to you.
14:01You're stuck with some dead money on both of them now
14:04because of some of these moves.
