00:00one on five with a bouncy trait still back for your pop and r&b it's your boy showtime the
00:03czar
00:03have some special guests in here with me today but i'm gonna introduce the person making this
00:08all run jayah honey what up though hey how y'all doing today welcome to the show how are you
00:14i'm
00:14doing pretty good happy to be here nice nice thank you and you got some guests would you introduce
00:18your guests for me yes marie is my uh runway model coach and i have aaron here i'm business
00:24partner and production company marie aaron how y'all doing i'm doing good how y'all doing today
00:31my bad i can't see that i want to make sure yo what up though what's going on detroit all
00:35right so
00:36let's uh let's start with you okay give people a little background about your business and how you
00:43guys started and um tell people the name of it first because i see it but i want to i
00:47want you to
00:47introduce it so my business is called strut honey it's a fashion show company and we started based
00:53off of making sure we give lgbt community and other diverse models an opportunity to be in the
00:59forefront to go on the runway what got you in a fashion and wanted to create a uh company such
01:06as
01:06this so my cousin she was modeling and i was very inspired by like seeing what she was doing i
01:13was
01:13like okay well i kind of want to try it out so i was like let me see how this
01:16will go and at first it
01:17was like a lot of roadblocks but we finally got to something ended up joining indie fashion
01:23i did my casting call and i got casted for the riverfront fest nice saucy santana nice and that
01:30was my first time getting on the runway at the heart blazer and it was a dream come true i
01:34had the
01:35time of my life what was that like getting on the runway for the first time man describe that feeling
01:38for people who have not done that it was it was scary heart pounding so we got on the stage
01:43i'm like
01:43okay well now we're here there's thousands of people over here i'm like okay well let's do it
01:49so what okay so what's the process i guess or like the preparation going into that because i see you
01:54see a lot of people walk runways and stuff like that and it's just like it just look like y
01:58'all just
01:58take a deep breath walk and walk back but is that what it is or no okay well all right
02:03so help us
02:05understand i ain't never did it but i see a lot of people out there doing and it look like
02:08it's easy
02:08but the way you're saying it ain't easy no um so basically making sure you have your model bag
02:13prepared you have to have like um undergarments make sure that you have your heels everything has to
02:19be in place and then you have to come go to your rehearsals we have countless rehearsals and really
02:26yes how many rehearsals y'all got like three sometimes maybe like five just the one yeah wow i didn't
02:32know
02:32that yeah we can't just get on the runway we rehearse yeah a lot i guess like an hour two
02:38hours
02:38what's the time three hours god dang yeah that's deep so it's it's a full process of getting to the
02:46runway and when we get there it's time to do your fittings so we got to make sure we get
02:50through our
02:51fittings go to our designers um buildings or we go to the rehearsal and we get fitted there
02:56and we get to see all the beautiful garments that we get to wear and sometimes we don't get to
03:00see them until the day of so that's another thing um it it's a it's a process and then we
03:05get on the
03:05stage it's an adrenaline so when you finish that show you want to do the next show um got you
03:10got
03:11you so how the walk there's like a 30 second walk right is depending on how long the runway is
03:16okay um house of honey yes that's the name fashion show yes okay obviously strut honey that's where you
03:24got the name house of honey but what why did you decide to name it house of honey so the
03:28house of honey
03:28honey is a ballroom inspired lgbt show um inspired by the ballroom scene got you so i am part of
03:35house
03:36of revlon shout out to jack so this is a big opportunity for us to showcase what we do on
03:43a
03:43fashion level and a vogue level and really just giving back to the community during pride month
03:48nice nice aaron yes sir how are you king i'm doing great man that's what's up um talk about
03:55your involvement in all of this and what do you help do oh my gosh my involvement dealing with jay
04:01is amazing listen i've been working with him for the last three years up under his company and
04:07protecting his image and he has a beautiful image like you said he representing the lgbt plus community
04:14and i'm a part of that community as well and he's a young guy that's doing great things um for
04:20his
04:20brand of course we got black and gold we themed out with the full nine and it's it's very very
04:27stylish
04:27my part in it is just protecting his image making sure everybody looks good from pictures to videos
04:34to the graphics whatever it is that he needs i'm able to provide for him you said you met him
04:38three
04:39years ago how did y'all link up with somebody did did you know him through somebody else or you
04:42just
04:43kind of ran into him y'all had a conversation how'd that go actually how it went is that he
04:46contacted
04:47me in need of help for his show he was like i need a videographer he told me a little
04:53bit of what's
04:54going on i got to the shoot it's a little chaotic but you organized it yeah buddy like hey it
05:01was that
05:01bad it was it was it was something but hey with organization everything can come together for sure
05:07got you so um i think that's my big role in this thing is to help organize the company and
05:13make
05:13sure everybody is set now you said you was doing some video were you doing that before you met him
05:18or it was like you was dabbling in it how'd that go okay yeah yeah so i've been doing videography
05:22work
05:22in photography for 10 years nice what got you into that oh man um i noticed that i had a
05:28camera in my
05:29hand when i was a kid in high school got you um yeah so that's where it actually started i
05:35really
05:36originally wanted to go for accounting and architectural work and then next thing you know
05:41it just turned into video camera work to camera work yeah i feel it that's what's up maria yes all
05:47right and you explain to people who you are my bad i'm only moving this so i can see y
05:50'all but um
05:51explain to people what you do now he said you're a coach yes okay what type of coach i'm a
05:56model coach
05:56for jay's brand um i started off as a model i still am a model um i was his brand
06:03ambassador at
06:04first basically just helping him get his brand out being the face of strut honey um right now as a
06:10model
06:11coach i'm helping all the other models get into their modeling career helping them with their walks
06:18helping them just build their confidence and things like that how many i guess people do you work
06:24at a time being a coach two three ten i say like like 60 yeah like definitely 50 plus because
06:36like
06:36all the models that come to the casting and then the models that get casted for the show oh so
06:43it's
06:43like america's next top model type situation where you got to handle that many personalities for real
06:48yeah yeah how do you do that that's a lot of people um i honestly don't know because i'm not
06:56i'm 19. ah nah bro you got to deal with that many people yeah i knew you were young but
07:01i didn't
07:02picture 19 and that you're dealing with a lot of grown people and yeah different mindsets so explain
07:06i mean to cut you off but explain how that you know trying to deal with that many personalities at
07:10one time i say sometimes it can be challenging off of the fact that i am young and someone being
07:16like
07:17older than me they might think like they don't have to listen right or why would they listen to
07:22like a little kid basically but but you're not a kid but yeah but i still think i do good
07:28like i
07:29really don't be having confrontation with any of the models for real nice nice yeah i want to get back
07:34to you um you spoke a lot actually both of y'all did um about this being an lgbtq plus
07:41event and um just
07:42how important is that to you to first of all be black representing yes and then also be lgbtq
07:49representing what is what does that mean to you for me doing what we're doing here is a huge
07:56opportunity for the community because what i do notice in the fashion industry here in michigan
08:01maybe not in atlanta or houston but here they do not give us as many opportunities as we could get
08:09other states why you think that is um so when i had first started out when i wanted to model
08:14i was
08:15told that i could not model due to my nails and my makeup yeah i saw you have put that
08:20i don't
08:21understand that why would they say that i feel like fashion is a i wasn't even allowed into the casting
08:25rooms wow they said there's no point for you to audition because you already know what the answer
08:31will be because of your nails yes and my makeup so at that point when i found out indie fashion
08:38was
08:38hosting the show with saucy santana as the host this was my ticket through right got you got you
08:44as i went there i was like you know what let me go and i did it and i got
08:49into the show so i was able
08:50to network it was like over 100 models there it was so many people there it was the perfect show
08:56to get your foot through the door so i was able to network i met taylor lang i met so
09:02many people
09:02there and ricky all of them i met all of my amazing peers as i know today at this one
09:09show
09:11so that's how this all started and then i started doing my own show because this is what i want
09:15for
09:15my people when you when they told you about your nails and they said nah were you like maybe this
09:23ain't
09:23did you get discouraged at all did you feel like this might not be familiar definitely um i didn't
09:29want to do it until i saw that cast that i was like well maybe this ain't something i want
09:32to do
09:32but i do want to do it because right i want to model what changed your mind in that in
09:37that instance
09:38right there you was like uh maybe this is not it but then you're like you know what i see
09:41the cast
09:41let me actually go for it seeing somebody look like me got you how important is that to be seeing
09:46someone looking like you because a lot of people don't see someone doing what they're doing and that can
09:51be you know discouraging so talk about that real quick man it gave me hope so i went and i
09:56went in
09:57there i was very nervous so i was shaking got you i was like okay are we gonna do good
10:02we're gonna get
10:02in and i was like okay we're in this long line you should have seen the line the line was
10:06so long
10:07just to get in there and i got in there my first time first time going to any kind of
10:13casting like
10:14this and they was like you know what they called my number and at that point i was how'd you
10:19do
10:20i think i did fair for no okay well you be honest with yourself that's what's up
10:26i had no training so i did did pretty good to get in the show got you that's all you
10:31needed yeah
10:32fire uh aaron i want to ask you a similar question man yes sir what does it mean to act
10:39a be black and
10:40be representing lgbtq man to be black and to be represented in the lgbt plus community is
10:46everything um listen i think we go through so much especially as black men right and already
10:57being part of community and you know growing up from childhood to being an adult it's a lot
11:05i don't think i have to elaborate too much on that right right i know what you're saying yeah um
11:09um but it is really amazing to help my people and protect their image and give them a safe space
11:16because that's what king gay production is it's a safe space for everybody to be involved and
11:21everybody image is protected because king gay productions is where your image matter i want
11:26to ask y'all about just the fashion industry as a whole with something that's always changing
11:32fashion is changing damn near every day every year every month you know what i'm saying how do y'all
11:36keep
11:38up keeping up i would say just finding things that work for you and your brand to like keep the
11:45people involved and wanting to be a part like we have the parade coming up so we have our models
11:50participate in parade and we go to like different festivals sort of pride festivals which is something
11:55different versus just throwing a you know traditional fashion show gotcha and then you know having some
12:01guests come out like our friend big sexy he will be out here next two weeks yep next two weeks
12:06so
12:06you know stuff like that just keeping stuff current with the social media times definitely you design
12:13clothes i used to okay it's a lot it's a lot to do a show and make clothes for the
12:20show at the same time
12:21okay i don't do that anymore would you step back into it if you want if you if i had
12:26more time
12:27definitely okay okay uh i want to ask you coach um what's your thoughts on just like the ever-changing
12:34fashion world and you know i guess teaching people how to walk in these clothes you know what i'm saying
12:39like just thoughts on that like trends change every day every month every week um me personally
12:46i'm not really the type to follow trends i feel like if you want to stand out in the fashion
12:52industry
12:53you have to be the translator you have to do your own thing so that brings more attention um
13:01let me see i don't know like okay so for example um with me being a model and like my
13:10outside world
13:10outside the fashion industry and like co-workers or people that i see in my everyday life they'll say
13:16like oh what did you have on or what was that like they don't really get the clothes that you
13:21weren't in the fashion industry but i don't know i just feel like um even if it's good exposure or
13:30bad exposure either way you're getting exposure and somebody is going to see you and somebody is
13:35going to like what you have on so why not be the trendsetter instead of trying to follow other trends
13:40because they always gonna change yeah that's a fact what did your parents say when you decided you
13:44wanted to be a model coach and how do you learn how to be a model coach well my mom
13:49she supports me in
13:50my modeling career um it may not be exactly what she wanted for me but um i'm just also kind
14:01of
14:01just now starting getting into being a modeling coach so you're still learning and you're still
14:06growing yeah i'm just kind of learning as i'm going through go ahead so we have a plethora of model
14:13coaches it's three or it's four of them so we all work together to do got you so it's a
14:19collective
14:19thing um yes so she does have help like amazing help we have elise we have ayana we have it's
14:28elise ayana who's the other one missing one i think that's it ricky you got ricky so it's three to
14:35four
14:35people helping you with all this okay we can make the show happen let me ask a lot of hands
14:40okay well that makes it better because that's like that's what i was saying about the 60 people
14:44that's a lot of just you know dealing with it so so much at one time i want to ask
14:49y'all about what's
14:49a misconception that people might have about either a the fashion industry you as a person just kind
14:56of tell me something that i feel like people automatically see you and you're like nah that's not
15:03right i'll say it's just take time to get to know somebody got you don't judge a book by its
15:09cover
15:09got you that person might got the same story you got what about you what's a misconception you feel
15:14like people out the gate just feel like it's wrong about i feel like people like when i do tell
15:19people
15:19that i am a model they do be surprised or like really or stuff like that because in the modeling
15:26industry fashion industry looking at all these big models they're i don't really look like them i have
15:32dreads my hair is bright red so i don't really fall into their perception on what a model is
15:40so i feel like that is a big a big misconception that people have about me nice social media plays
15:48a big role today in everything okay how do y'all manage you know social media um i guess with
15:55just
15:55egos and just like promoting your brand and promoting yourself and just you know talk to me about like how
16:00social media affects what you do on a day-to-day basis social media is a great tool that's how
16:06strut honey was able to honestly push through as well just got you yeah the numbers do pretty well
16:11yeah uh me and aaron we have a feel like the numbers do great on there yes we also do
16:18promo shoots so for
16:20our fashion shows we actually just did a promo shoot last week yes and with the promo shoots it brings
16:26a lot
16:26of viewers to see what we have and it gives them a visual of what the show will look like
16:30and this really helps on social media because people can see what's going on so i think social
16:36media is a great tool to push out you know just the visual of what your show is nice nice
16:41the name
16:41strut honey where'd you come up with that from so we want to strut so you want to do a
16:46duck walk
16:46and i love beyonce oh i got you strut honey is just like me nice you started it when we
16:54started
16:55it's like three years back okay and and at that time you were were you still designing clothing you
17:02know into the fashion or like were you still like trying to build something i was making denim clothing
17:06so i had a denim collection and then i was back and forth going to new york and i was
17:13working just
17:14working a regular job and then modeling on top of that got you when y'all got involved with strut
17:19honey
17:19what was your first impression um okay so i met jayah like almost three years ago um i was already
17:27doing shows um my original model coach her name is paia fiore she actually like got me into modeling
17:33i met jayah because he had came and did a fashion show with her before and he had he chose
17:42me to be
17:42like one of his little models for his little like house of honey walk set yeah so after that like
17:51we just stayed in contact and he wanted me to work with him and i do feel like it has
17:57progressed a lot
17:58like from the um rehearsal spots that we have now from the rehearsal spots we had then the venues
18:06the crowds like everything really is changing and it's getting better nice nice it's getting bigger
18:12and better and that's where my portion comes in that these pictures and the videos social media
18:19is a powerful tool yeah and like i said protecting that image is everything and jayah always come up
18:25with some cool ideas so he always got something under his sleeve with another idea he probably got
18:31another show in his head already stay already um but yeah that social media play is a lot where we
18:39do a lot of projects to promote and get the views because the viewers is what really does it for
18:46us
18:47all right a couple more things i'm gonna let y'all go because i know y'all busy um kelly
18:51was telling
18:51me you got a connection with beyonce and some you met her i was featured on her website and on
18:57the be
18:57good um on the be good page on instagram oh talk to me about that what is that what was
19:03that like
19:04it was amazing now you're talking about viewers that's a lot of viewers and a lot of eyeballs
19:09a lot of people yeah video it was actually two videos and a picture did you get a chance to
19:15meet
19:15her it was just usually no i didn't get to meet her but i saw her very close she was
19:18just as close
19:18as you are to me right now that's yeah that's that was amazing and um what happened was the guy
19:25he was like can you do this he's like can you put your hand over your nose and i said
19:30okay
19:31and then when i put my hand on my nose he was like okay well
19:36and then there you go right on the page i was like is that me wow what did your people
19:40think
19:41when they saw did y'all see that listen yeah i seen the picture what did y'all say when
19:45y'all
19:45beyonce page that's you that was amazing see i already got a beyonce video out so when he got
19:50his moment it's like yeah we doing something so you had a beyonce moment too talk to me about
19:57that real quick so my beyonce moment was with the before i let go song we did an amazing video
