Uber driver helps older woman out of a scam
Transcript
00:00People are amazing when they help others, help strangers out.
00:04Love that.
00:04Yeah.
00:05Today's Cup of Joy on the Andy Summer Show is about an Uber driver in Arizona.
00:10A woman in her 90s got into their car, and on the phone, she was on with a bank representative,
00:20or at least someone posing as one.
00:22Oh, no.
00:23Yeah.
00:24And, well, she was trying to get her debit cards over to the bank representative.
00:29The driver was a former police officer.
00:33His name's Michael.
00:34So in his retirement, he's been driving Uber.
00:37Wow.
00:37Yeah.
00:38And he recognized the warning signs when the woman said she had been told to keep the matter
00:42secret and advised not to tell anybody about anything that was going on.
00:47Oh, my.
00:48So she's on the phone in the back of the Uber, and he's listening to this conversation as
00:51he's driving.
00:52Wow.
00:53Yeah.
00:53And so she's being told, you have to go to this location.
00:55You have to punch these numbers in.
00:57You have to do all these things.
00:58Oh, my gosh.
00:58She gets into the Uber.
00:59She's kind of, she's wary.
01:02Right.
01:02As one would be.
01:03She thinks things are getting stolen, and she needs to go talk to the bank and do all
01:07this stuff.
01:07Well, Michael knew very quickly he's going to have to, for lack of a better term, disarm
01:12this woman.
01:13Right?
01:13She's very, you know, nervous.
01:15Yeah.
01:16And tried to get her guard down a little bit so she knows that she can comfortably talk
01:20to him about it, and ultimately avoided losing tens of thousands of dollars she planned on
01:27passing over to this person posing as a bank representative.
01:31Wow.
01:31And it's all thanks to Michael, the Uber driver.
01:34This is why I talk to my Uber drivers.
01:37Yeah.
01:38So that's why.
01:39They can help me out of a scam in case I don't realize I'm getting scammed.
01:42You never know.
01:43I'll tell you.
01:44I am a talkative folk.
01:46You know, Rideshare, I think Uber specifically has, like, a different setting, and I can't
01:52remember what it's called, but it's where, like, no one talks.
01:54Where the driver won't talk to you.
01:55Nobody talks.
01:57And sometimes I see it's extra money.
02:01And I'm like, why am I going to pay extra money to not talk?
02:04Oh, my gosh.
02:05Seriously.
02:06They should charge you more.
02:07They see Jeff come and they're like, my word.
02:08By the end of the trip, this is an honest to God true story.
02:11I had just moved to Las Vegas.
02:13I get in the car, start talking.
02:14I immediately know the guy's Armenian.
02:15Why?
02:16I can tell.
02:17Because you are also Armenian.
02:18I'm also Armenian.
02:19So we quickly realize, I swear, it's a true story.
02:22This is the first Uber I've ever taken in this new city that I'm living.
02:25And by the end of the ride, I have his cell phone number.
02:28No.
02:29I have his family's restaurant.
02:30And the next day, I went to his family's restaurant.
02:32Of course you did.
02:33Armenian restaurant.
02:34That day, they invited me over for dinner at their home.
02:37Oh, my gosh.
02:38I didn't end up going that far.
02:40But.
02:41They're like, look at this hairy little guy.
02:42Yeah.
02:42You've got to have him over.
02:43He's one of us.
02:45He's so cute.
02:46He's one of us.
02:47And it was great.
02:48It was winter.
02:48So, like, we're all a lot cozier in that time.
02:51Summer's tough when you've got a sweater on under your T-shirt.
02:54But you're in Las Vegas.
02:54How winter is winter?
02:55Exactly.
02:56It's like 65.
02:57But that's perfect for us Armenians.
03:00Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
