00:00We are pretty self-sufficient people, but that has caused us to make prayer our last resort when we're in trouble.
00:11We make prayer so difficult. Prayer may be mysterious, but it's not complicated. It's simple.
00:19And in this series, I'm going to teach you how to transform your prayer life.
00:24I'm not here to make you feel guilty about not praying as much as you should.
00:31The real issue isn't guilt. It's that we're missing out on the great adventure God has for us.
00:39So you want to know why you're not seeing your prayers being answered?
00:43Well, they're just not specific enough.
00:46Your prayers should be so specific that when God answers it, you recognize it.
00:51If you want your prayers answered, three things need to be true.
00:56The request needs to be right, the timing needs to be right, and you need to be right.
01:03Don't pray like an adult. Pray like a child.
01:07Keep it simple, keep it specific, and keep at it.
01:10God cares about everything in your life, even the little things.
01:17Nothing is too insignificant to get on your prayer list,
01:20because God has the capacity to care about every detail of every one of His children, including you.
01:27What is prayer?
01:29Prayer is a conversation.
01:31Prayer is a relationship.

01:53who has the capacity to care about every detail of every child of His, including you.
02:02Prayer. Keep it simple, keep it specific.

03:12Thank you for watching Turning Point.
03:14Here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
03:17The Great Adventure of Prayer.
03:20Ask, and it will be given to you.
03:23Seek, and you will find.
03:25Stand, knock, and it will be opened to you.
03:29These three instructions, ask, seek, and knock, are in the imperative mood.
03:37Now, I'm an old English major, so that means something to me.
03:41But let me tell you what it means if it doesn't mean anything to you.
03:46The imperative mood is not a suggestion.
03:50It's a command.
03:51They are not Jesus asking us to consider asking,
03:56to pray about seeking, and to think about knocking.
04:00Do you see the emphasis?
04:02You can't escape it.
04:03The word ask is dominant in the text because God wants us to ask.
04:08He doesn't tell us to beg.
04:10He doesn't command us to cry out,
04:13though these may be valid expressions of prayer at any given time.
04:17But he gives us a clear, simple, directive ask.
04:21I think one of the reasons why we may not pray as much as we ought to
04:25is we've made prayer a hard thing.
04:30Prayer is like a child going to his father to ask for what he needs.
04:34Oh, it's much more than that, but it's simply that.
04:37That's persistence.
04:39Kids never quit.
04:41They just keep asking,
04:42and that's exactly the kind of simplicity and determination
04:45that Jesus is talking about in his lesson to us.
04:52So then he says,
04:53after you ask, seek.
04:55Jesus says, seek.
04:57And I mentioned that each of these commands grows in intensity.
05:01Seeking to me requires more effort than asking.
05:04It's as if you first come to ask,
05:06but after asking,
05:08you realize you need to seek out the one who holds the answer.
05:11So seeking is more about pursuing the giver than the gift.
05:15And it says,
05:16I will seek out the one who has the answer.
05:19I will find him.
05:20I will get to him.
05:21Sometimes in prayer,
05:23we casually ask only to realize that we've allowed distance to come between us and the Lord.
05:31Seeking means to close that gap.
05:34It means drawing near to him so we can truly communicate in our prayers.
05:38We're to ask.
05:40We're to seek.
05:42And then the Bible says we're to knock.
05:45It's even more intimate and more intense than seeking.
05:48If you go to the place where you believe the answer is and you ask,
05:52then you seek the one who has the answer.
05:54Finally,
05:55you find yourself at the door knocking and calling out.
05:58Where is he?
05:59How can I receive the answer?
06:01However you interpret those three words,
06:04ask,
06:04seek,
06:05and knock.
06:06Understand this,
06:07friends.
06:09Jesus is inviting us,
06:11each of us to come.
06:12He wants us to come with intensity,
06:15bringing the needs that we have in our lives before him.
06:18We don't have to knock down the door.
06:21He's opened the door and he invites us to ask.
06:25Let me say it this way.
06:27God is more anxious to hear your prayer than you are to hear his answer.
06:33And so when we don't pray,
06:35we leave this tremendous opportunity on the table.
06:40The imperatives of prayer,
06:42ask,
06:43seek,
06:44and knock.
06:45Now let me talk with you for a few moments about the influence of prayer.
06:49In verse eight,
06:50Jesus said for everyone who asks receives and he who seeks finds and to him who knocks,
06:58it will be opened.
07:01This verse contains two key truths.
07:06First,
07:06it tells us that prayer is comprehensive.
07:10Notice the word everyone,
07:13a great word,
07:14not just pastors,
07:17not just deacons,
07:18not just television preachers,
07:21not just those who have been to seminary or taken courses on prayer.
07:25Jesus is speaking to everyone.
07:27That means everyone in this room and everyone watching this message,
07:31wherever you may be,
07:33you are included in this promise.
07:36Every kingdom child.
07:39That means you can pray like this.
07:40You can ask and seek and knock and you can know that God will hear you.
07:44This promise is for every single one of us.
07:47Some might say,
07:48well,
07:48I don't pray much.
07:49I just send my requests to the church and I let them pray.
07:54I know that's true for a lot of people because I'm at the other end of that.
07:59What a tragedy.
08:00I've had so many people come to me over the years and they would tell me about a problem
08:05and they would say,
08:06pastor,
08:06this is going on in my life.
08:08Would you pray for me?
08:09And later in my ministry,
08:10I started to say to them,
08:11have you prayed about this?
08:13Well,
08:13no,
08:14that's why I'm bringing it to you.
08:15I'm asking you to pray about it.
08:17And then I would say to them,
08:19you know,
08:19I am happy to do that.
08:20But let me remind you,
08:22sir,
08:24mrs.
08:25My prayer has no more efficacy before God than yours.
08:29I don't stand ahead of you in the prayer line.
08:31Just because I'm a pastor doesn't mean that my prayers are answered more than yours.
08:36So I'm happy to pray for you,
08:38but you don't need to go through me.
08:40You know,
08:40there is a branch of religion that teaches that,
08:42but that's not what the Bible teaches.
08:45The Bible teaches we're to go to God,
08:48that he opens his heart to us.
08:50And no matter who we are or how insignificant we may think we are in the kingdom,
08:55God wants us to talk with him.
08:58And if you're thinking,
09:00surely God doesn't mean me.
09:02I'm going to say to you,
09:03oh,
09:03yes,
09:03he does.
09:04What part of everyone don't you get?
09:08Prayer is comprehensive.
09:10And then the Bible teaches that prayer is certain.
09:14Not only is prayer comprehensive,
09:16it is certain.
09:18I'm not going to water this down or explain it away because this is exactly what God has said.
09:24We always try to explain it away because the lack of our faith,
09:27he says,
09:28everyone who asks,
09:30receives.
09:32Everyone who seeks,
09:34finds.
09:35Everyone who knocks,
09:37it will be opened.
09:39Not some of the time,
09:40not most of the time,
09:42not a few of the people,
09:44not just some of the people.
09:45Everyone who asks,
09:48receives.
09:48One reason we don't pray is because we don't believe.
09:52And if we don't believe,
09:54we have a real problem with the integrity of God's word.
09:56You see,
09:57I believe God is waiting to open his treasures and provide what we need.
10:02He already has it.
10:03He doesn't have to go and get it.
10:05He is simply waiting for us to ask.
10:09There's an old story about a man who went to heaven.
10:12And when he got to heaven,
10:14he was ushered by St. Peter into the lobby of heaven and quite surprised because the lobby was just surrounded with filing cabinets.
10:24He thought that wasn't what heaven was going to be like.
10:26And so he asked St. Peter what that was.
10:28He said,
10:29these cabinets are full of files of all the things God wanted to give to his children,
10:36but they never asked for them.
10:38And I remember when I heard that story,
10:41I actually prayed,
10:43Lord,
10:43when I get to heaven,
10:44I want an empty file.
10:46I don't want to have anything up there that I didn't have to.
10:53One of the best books on prayer that's ever been written.
10:56And I think really the first important book on prayer that I ever read was Andrew Murray's classic book with Christ in the school of prayer.
11:06It's a small book,
11:08but I believe it's the best book on prayer I have ever read.
11:12It's an old book,
11:14but the truth that says is still the truth in that book.
11:18Murray wrote,
11:19if there's one thing I think the church needs to learn,
11:22it is that God means prayer to have an answer and that it has not entered into the heart of man to conceive what God will do for his child who gives himself to believe that his prayer will be heard.
11:36When we pray,
11:39God answers.
11:41He's not on vacation.
11:43He doesn't take a day off.
11:45He's not sleeping.
11:48He's waiting to hear from us.
11:51I remember Mark Batterson,
11:53who was one of my favorite current preachers,
11:55said,
11:56I can guarantee you that 100% of the prayers you don't pray will not be answered.
12:00And he's absolutely right.
12:04I wrote this simple prayer in my journal one day.
12:07Here's just a little verse.
12:10I believe God answers prayer,
12:12answers always,
12:14everywhere.
12:16I may cast my anxious care,
12:18burdens that I never bear,
12:20on the God who answers prayer.
12:23God answers prayer.
12:24Everyone who prays receives.
12:31Then,
12:32along with the imperatives of prayer and the influence of prayer,
12:36we have Jesus' illustration of prayer.
12:39If you want to learn how to preach,
12:42you need to read Jesus' sermons.
12:45He was a great preacher.
12:46And I take great counsel in the fact that Jesus was a storyteller.
12:50He was a great storyteller.
12:53And he didn't have illustration books like we have,
12:56or novels,
12:57or whatever we read.
12:58He didn't have a newspaper with current stories in it.
13:00But Jesus often took illustrations from the things he saw.
13:05He'd be walking along,
13:06he had a fig tree one day,
13:07and he gave an illustration.
13:09Notice in verses 9 and 10,
13:12Jesus illustrating these principles.
13:15What man is there among you,
13:18who if his son asks for bread,
13:20will give him a stone?
13:22Or if he asks for a fish,
13:25will he give him a serpent?
13:27Jesus wants to make prayer very practical.
13:31Not philosophical.
13:33Not overly spiritual.
13:35Do you remember when Jesus was in the wilderness
13:37being tempted by Satan?
13:39Satan said to him,
13:40why don't you turn this stone into a loaf of bread?
13:43What's often lost in that story is
13:46that the stones in the region
13:47looked like small loaves of bread.
13:50I have no doubt that Satan pointed to a stone
13:53that resembled a loaf and said,
13:55why don't you turn that into bread?
13:57Now Jesus is using the same analogy.
14:00He says,
14:01which of you as a father,
14:02if your son comes to you and says,
14:04I need a loaf of bread,
14:06would pick up a stone from the ground
14:08and say,
14:09here,
14:09have this instead?
14:10Or he said,
14:13consider how fishing was done.
14:15Fishermen gathered their catch with nets
14:17and sometimes a water snake
14:19would get caught along with the fish.
14:22Jesus says,
14:23which of you,
14:23when your son asks for a fish,
14:25would hand him a snake instead?
14:28Pretty preposterous illustrations
14:30when you stop and think about it.
14:32Then he drives the point home.
14:34Here's what he says.
14:36If you being evil,
14:37and he doesn't mean worst evil possible.
14:40He just means in comparison to God,
14:43we're evil.
14:44If you imperfect as you are,
14:46know how to give good gifts to your children,
14:49do you not think God will do the same thing for you?
14:52You're his child.
14:53If you being sinful,
14:56know how to respond to your children's needs,
14:58how much more will God respond to his children?
15:03That's the illustration.
15:04That's the way we are to approach God in prayer.
15:08Yet, friends,
15:09I want to tell you,
15:10there are many Christians who pray
15:12as if they have to break down God's reluctance.
15:15As if they must bang on the door
15:17until he finally listens.
15:20That's not the case at all.
15:21If there's one thing you can take away today,
15:24let it be this.
15:25God is eager to hear you.
15:27He may not answer you the first time you ask,
15:29but if you keep on asking,
15:31he will hear you,
15:32and he will choose the time of his answer.
15:35God is eager to hear and answer your prayers,
15:39and he doesn't need you to go through a formula
15:41to get your prayers answered.
15:43You don't have to chant.
15:45You don't have to count beads.
15:47All you have to do is ask.
15:50That's it.
15:51Just ask.
15:53And God, like a loving father,
15:55is ready to listen.
15:57One thing I can tell you as a father
15:59is that one of my greatest joys
16:01along the way over the years
16:04has been to be
16:06the answer to the needs my children have.
16:10I now consider myself the ultimate safety net
16:15for the Jeremiah family.
16:18And everybody in my family knows that.
16:21And it gives me great joy to be in that place.
16:25You know, if that's true for me as a human father,
16:28how do you think our heavenly father feels?
16:31There's more than one answer to prayer.
16:35I think we should talk about that for a few moments.
16:38Some people say,
16:39I pray and God never answers.
16:40No.
16:41What happens is you pray and you get an answer you don't like.
16:44How many of you know there's more than one answer to prayer?
16:47In fact, I have a little thing I wrote in my Bible some years ago
16:51and it goes like this.
16:53If the request is wrong,
16:56God says no.
16:58How many of you know you've asked God
17:00for some pretty stupid things over the years?
17:03If you'd go back and realize
17:04some of the prayers you've prayed,
17:06I mean, God would never answer those prayers.
17:08You know better than that.
17:10You almost have to ask God to forgive you
17:12for being so insolent in what you've prayed for.
17:16I think when we get to heaven,
17:18we will be thankful for all the prayers
17:20that God said yes to
17:21and a few of the prayers that he said no to.
17:25I won't ask for a show of hands,
17:27but I think many of us could testify
17:29that we're grateful for some of the times God said no.
17:34Looking back, we can see that we were asking
17:36for the wrong thing.
17:38Our request was wrong,
17:39and when our request was wrong,
17:41God said no.
17:44Sometimes the timing isn't right.
17:47I've run into that more than once.
17:49God says slow.
17:51Is that an answer?
17:53Yeah.
17:54Absolutely.
17:55We've all been there praying for something,
17:57and it wasn't the right time.
18:00In hindsight, we can see his wisdom
18:02in delaying the answers.
18:04Other times, God says grow.
18:08We may have asked for something
18:10we weren't ready to handle.
18:12And God, like a wise parent,
18:15says you need to mature first.
18:17But when all these things are true,
18:19when the request is right
18:21and the timing is right
18:22and we are right,
18:24oftentimes God says go.
18:26He answers.
18:27When we step into the adventure of prayer,
18:30we can be sure that God will respond.
18:34And then finally, the impact of prayer in verse 11.
18:39He says,
18:40If you then, being evil,
18:41know how to give good gifts to your children,
18:44how much more will your Father in Heaven
18:46give good things to you who ask Him?
18:48Before we move on,
18:50I want to briefly emphasize this fourth point.
18:54God has good gifts He wants to give.
18:56The Bible says every good gift
18:59and every perfect gift
19:00comes down from the Father in Heaven.
19:03And when we pray,
19:04we should expect that to be true
19:06in the way He answers.
19:09Before we close our Bible,
19:11I want to highlight
19:12three important lessons about prayer
19:15that come from these verses.
19:18Here's the first one.
19:19When we pray,
19:21we're to pray personally.
19:23Prayer is personal.
19:26Notice the wording in the passage.
19:29Every pronoun is personal.
19:31Prayer isn't just a corporate activity,
19:33though praying together as a group is valuable.
19:36But group prayer is only as strong as personal prayer.
19:41After all, what is group prayer?
19:43It's a gathering of individuals
19:44who each bring their own personal prayers.
19:47So we cannot pass off our responsibility to pray.
19:52The church, our Sunday school class,
19:55our parents, our small group
19:56cannot pray in our behalf.
20:00Each one of us is personally called to pray.
20:04Let him ask personally.
20:07And it's an imperative.
20:11Secondly, we're to pray specifically.
20:15Let me give you an example.
20:16Your prayer should be so specific
20:18that when God answers it,
20:21you recognize it.
20:23Lord, I need this,
20:24and I need it by tomorrow.
20:26That's how new Christians pray.
20:28They don't overcomplicate it.
20:30They heard that God answers prayer,
20:32so they just take it at face value.
20:35They haven't yet learned
20:36all the religious reasons
20:37why that can't be true.
20:39They simply go to God and say,
20:41God, it's me, and it's here,
20:42and it's what I need,
20:44and that's exactly how we should pray.
20:46Straight forward and specific.
20:49You know, nothing is too insignificant
20:51to get on our prayer list.
20:53He cares about,
20:54somebody says,
20:55I don't want to ask,
20:56I don't want to trouble God with that.
20:58You're talking about
20:59the infinite God
21:01who has the capacity
21:02to care about every detail
21:04of every child of his,
21:06including you
21:07and including me.
21:09So we need to pray personally,
21:12and we need to pray specifically,
21:14and we need to pray persistently.
21:18I said at the beginning,
21:19we don't have to bang on the door
21:20and beg,
21:22and that's true.
21:23But it is also true
21:25that we need to continue praying.
21:27God will not necessarily answer
21:29our prayer on the first time we pray.
21:32In the Greek language
21:33of the New Testament,
21:34there are two basic kinds
21:36of imperatives.
21:37One is called
21:38an aorist imperative,
21:40and the aorist imperative
21:42is used to describe
21:43an action
21:43that takes place
21:45once and for all.
21:47For instance,
21:48suppose you're in a car
21:49and giving directions
21:50to the driver
21:50at a particular intersection,
21:52you say,
21:53stop at that light.
21:55Stop is an imperative.
21:57But in that context,
21:58it is also an aorist imperative,
22:01a once-for-all action.
22:02Stop.
22:03But if you were to say
22:05to the driver,
22:06don't forget to stop
22:08at every light,
22:09that's a present imperative
22:11with continuous action.
22:14Do you know what kind
22:15of imperatives Jesus uses
22:17in this passage?
22:19All three of his commands,
22:21ask, seek, and knock,
22:22are present imperatives.
22:24They could be translated this way.
22:26Keep on asking.
22:28Keep on seeking.
22:30Keep on knocking.
22:32Don't ever stop asking.
22:34Don't ever stop seeking.
22:36Don't ever stop knocking.
22:37Just keep at it.
22:39Keep bringing your prayers to God.
22:41If you think your request
22:42is legitimate,
22:43keep asking.
22:44Keep seeking.
22:45Keep knocking.
22:45And let me put a parenthesis in here.
22:47While you're doing that,
22:49God may not answer your prayer,
22:50but he will change you.
22:52He will change you.
22:54God wants to teach us
22:56through persistent praying
22:57to wait on him
22:58and to watch.
22:59And while we're praying
23:00and while we're watching,
23:03God will do in us
23:05what he pleases.
23:06He's working on us.
23:08He's conforming us
23:09more and more
23:10to the image of Christ.
23:12And when you're ready,
23:13he will surely give you
23:15the right answer.
23:17Jesus emphasized this lesson
23:19with two parables.
23:20He said,
23:21So I say to you,
23:23ask and it will be given to you.
23:25Seek and you will find.
23:26Knock and it will be opened to you.
23:28For everyone who asks receives
23:30and he who seeks finds
23:31and to him who knocks
23:32it will be opened.
23:33The message is clear.
23:35Never quit.
23:37In Luke 18,
23:38Jesus told about a widow
23:39who received justice
23:42from a corrupt judge
23:43simply because she refused
23:44to stop asking.
23:46In 1 Thessalonians 5, 17,
23:49it says pray without ceasing.
23:52That doesn't mean walk around
23:54mumbling prayers all the time.
23:55It just means
23:57don't ever get out
23:59of the mood of prayer.
24:01Don't ever get in a place
24:02where you can't say,
24:03Lord, I need your help
24:04or Lord, I need your wisdom.
24:07Some of you have been praying
24:08for family members,
24:09but maybe you've given up
24:11because God hasn't answered
24:12in your lifetime.
24:13Let me remind you
24:15that God is not on your schedule.
24:17He answered in his time
24:18and he calls us
24:20to keep praying.
24:21Never stop asking.
24:22I want to testify to you today
24:24that God answers prayer.
24:25I've seen him do it.
24:27He can lead you
24:28to the right doctor
24:29in a busy secular hospital
24:35who just happens
24:37to be a believer.
24:39He can connect you
24:40with the world's top specialist
24:4240 minutes from your home
24:45at just the right time.
24:47He can place your child
24:49in a university
24:50where unbeknownst to you,
24:52the president
24:53and athletic director
24:54are both committed Christians.
24:57He can even bring
24:59a young man to salvation
25:00just in time
25:02for a Christ-centered wedding.
25:05God answers prayer.
25:06I hope you believe that.
