00:00at this time in the c-note we look at the top cowboy storylines from around america's team and
00:04we'll start with tommy yarish today dallas cowboys.com he's he's got um you know some
00:10quinnon williams quotes uh what he had to say about the the new dc and here's how he leads
00:15into it when watching some of the best defenses around the league williams sees a lot of the
00:18same things that parker's looking to do for the cowboys uh implementing in in those elite units
00:24with that combined with the new position coaches and new personnel it creates an enticing combination
00:32quinnon's saying 90 of this whole entire defensive staff is turned over the guys we brought in from
00:36coaches all the way down to players is unbelievable the scheme itself you got to see around the league
00:41a lot of people run the same scheme and have unbelievable success all the top defenses in
00:45the league kind of run this scheme super excited the way that cp runs it how meticulous he is the
00:50details he hones in and to be around a great group of guys kenny clark has recognized that
00:57the little things are a big emphasis for what parker wants to do quote the attention to detail
01:01the defense is going to be huge on the details huge on pre-snap and all that kind of stuff
01:06all that stuff is going to be really good for us we've got a lot of smart players and all
01:10three
01:11levels of the defense and that is going to be great so tis the season for optimism and uh you
01:18know
01:18quinnon williams and kenny clark and some of that is like your standard oh this is going to be so
01:23amazing it's not going to be anything like last year and i think uh the the player sessions for all
01:2832 teams have an element of that uh but the cool stuff is just what quinnon was talking about a
01:34guy
01:35that's you know a student of defense he knows what it takes to be a great defense and and notices
01:40that a lot of the the teams around the league are are running this defense and the cowboys are finally
01:46aligned with it uh which is is uh is really cool now um i did want to get in what
01:52clarence hill
01:53said on all city today i don't know if you saw that clip going viral with uh with uh jeff
01:58and and
01:58jesse but he said that while people are excited about caleb downs he's not going to step in here
02:04and be the best safety in the league day one and in fact jake ferguson lamb pickens they've all
02:11given him so far a welcome to the league moment what do you guys think about that after one week
02:18of of ota's expectations for caleb downs what what if there are some significant growing pains yeah i
02:23mean i do think that we all have to anticipate that is for his for as highly touted of a
02:28guy as he is
02:28this is still the national football league we're watching wimby get get worked in moments right now
02:33like he's supposed to be an alien he's not from this world and he's having moments i mean
02:39pick basically any player yeah any player no matter how great they are they've gotten got
02:46and especially i would imagine early on in their career you're talking about ota's george pickens
02:51cd lamb yeah i would expect george pickens and cd lamb to probably get the best of them
02:56if they're matched up throughout an entire practice but i do think there is an expectation
03:02factor that cowboys fans need to have let's not forget just the reality of professional sports
03:08we're not going to watch some guy just go into the league and be teflon play in play out for
03:14an
03:14entire season game or career yeah that's just that's just simply not going to happen no he is going
03:19to give up some plays here and there uh and and i think that to your point that's the nature
03:24of the
03:24beast and that's awesome i mean it's going to be fun to see i hope we get the one-on
03:29-one you know him
03:29with a chance one-on-one with cd with the george pickens with the ryan flannoy all of these things
03:35i mean
03:35that's going to make him better i mean if you go back and you look at micah's rookie debut against
03:40tampa bay i mean he was having to drop off in coverage i mean his head was spinning out there
03:45right still ended up having a hell of a rookie season but night one was rough right i'm sure
03:50there's going to be growing pains i think that's absolutely natural for any rookie i would have
03:53liked to hear clarence also say like but i did see him make this play or make that play yeah
03:59you
03:59know like uh hopefully he's out there making some plays and he's not just getting guy like i believe
04:04that there's going to be way more good than bad but to expect like perfection is an unfair i think
04:10chill did what he did because of all of the positive reporting about how great it's gone and how great
04:15it's going to be okay you know and it was just kind of like a hey let's let's maybe pump
04:20the brakes and
04:20acknowledge there are going to be growing pains in here he is not the zach martin rookie that's like
04:26holy crap he might be an all pro already yeah and we did see that at the 1v1s in oxnard
04:31like 2014 i still
04:33remember kavanaugh and brought us reacting to how stunning it was that a a player who is
04:39essentially in his first training camp practice was so good immediately but that you know maybe
04:45caleb downs will be there by the time we get to oxnard maybe brian maybe so you know that's the
04:51thing i mean there's things that uh the thing i the learning curve thing is and i think they're
04:58going to they're going to work around this will be how much does he play nickel slot i think they
05:05want him to play i think they want him to be the starter to do it but i wonder if
05:10it's going to be
05:11all the time that's the biggest question i'm going to have uh 817 downs impact is not only one-on
05:18-one
05:18plays but an overall smarter quicker to react and sniff out plays which makes opposing quarterbacks have
05:22to hold on to the ball one or two seconds longer sacks equals to turnovers that's from the 817 that's
05:27a that's a great point because you know i he's not going to be trying to play man defense against
05:32the best wide receivers in football yeah that's the whole thing i mean that that if if if the cowboy
05:39fan base thinks that that's going to be what he does it's like well man you drafted him why why
05:45can't he you know that's going to be get ready that you know he has a bad day or he
05:50gets beaten
05:50coverage or gives him a first down and a key point it's going to be well what the hell man
05:55they
05:55drafted him to make these plays why can't he make these plays damn bro she told us this is your
06:00favorite player you know i'm getting prepared for that yes but i also think by what they're trying
06:06to do to look at other guys at the nickel spot might tell you a little bit what they want
06:12to do
06:12initially with this player yeah you know i think i watched the texans in last january and into that
06:20playoff game against the steelers studied them quite a bit because i do that podcast
06:24and the thing about them is they just have so many guys like downs that might not have the counting
06:31stats of wow look at all these pbus look at all these turnovers but they're all in the perfect spot
06:36and secure the tackle just so consistently down in and down out and i've thought that's the kind of
06:43player you're getting with caleb downs yeah you're not getting a guy that's going to go lock up the
06:47opposing team's tight end or best wide receivers but if he's capable uh okay i mean but but you're
06:54not wrong i i agree with you i i think there was going to be some days where it's not
07:01going to look
07:02as pretty and clean as we all believe it might be joseph hoyt morning news with a headline on clayton
07:08adams cowboys oc clayton adams doubling down in dallas amid increased interest around the nfl and it's a
07:15really nice story today joseph hoyt morning news joins us from time to time it's really about how
07:20the cowboys are hoping their offense evolves in year two under clayton adams and if it does you
07:25can bet your ass that a number of teams are going to be uh hot on his tails i i
07:31i do wonder with shoddy
07:33continuing to call the plays like if you're the cowboys are you willing to promote adams to full-on
07:39play caller or would you just would you let another team come in there and take him to be
07:43their their oc i don't think shoddy would do that no no i mean at the press conference he just
07:48said
07:48he doesn't envision at giving up play calling i mean he said maybe 10 to 15 years down the road
07:53connor riley becomes that guy they're not gonna they're not gonna they're not gonna switch that
07:57but they're also not gonna let him be an oc somewhere the only way clayton adams leaves is if
08:01his contract's up and he's a free agent or that he's going to be a head coach because you already
08:06had
08:06wasn't it i know it was philadelphia and they would nix that probably anyways because it's
08:11philadelphia but philadelphia what i think sirianni called shoddy be like hey cool what about clayton
08:16adams can i interview him hell to the no end conversation so i mean calling plays as a head
08:23coach still fairly common about half the league doing this still we have no problem with with
08:27shoddy continuing to call plays was he good at it is he good at game management and calling plays
08:31do you feel like with shoddy i don't think that's his best trait i yeah there were definitely some
08:35questions uh with the game management stuff you know at points last year um but i i do think
08:41overall with the success of the offense and just kind of seeing and maybe some of the design element
08:45like clayton adams is our credit for that but but i think shoddy did a good job overall with play
08:49calling i felt like maybe the first 10 weeks of the season it was really good and then from week
08:5511 on
08:56i mean i know they had victories against philadelphia and kansas city those were kind of those
09:01key games but did you kind of feel like that things were getting shut down at the end the
09:06second half they couldn't score touchdowns they were take they were taking away your players and
09:10you were worried about that you're like god this this offense is too good the defense is in trouble
09:15the offense has got to score points and then all of a sudden you know pickens was a no-show
09:20in some
09:20games and you weren't running the ball particularly well and you know it didn't it didn't end as well as
09:26you like to have 10 uh jerry trotta uh landry hat writing about the week for marquez valdez scantling
09:32getting to run with the ones in the absence of george pickens do you think we're maybe seeing that
09:38they want kavante turpin to focus on kick return i would believe so i i believe uh because it's not
09:44like you're looking at mvs like he's an answer with your ones yeah i i was i fortunate this morning
09:50to watch tape with the duke mannyweather cool and we were watching there in the studio and we were
09:56watching turpin and it was a philadelphia game where turpin's the running back and then he
10:00fumbles the ball and you're like going oh damn and then they run a jet sweep and duke's pointing
10:06out well well they had this play blocked really well and he was pointing out how it was schemed
10:11he goes what's keeping this guy from running the ball here this is where the ball needs to hit
10:17you know and so now you're like okay and i think him trying to i think him realizing like well
10:23they're using me as wide receiver down the field they're throwing me the ball and i have to preserve
10:28myself to be able to do that maybe he's thinking i'm going to make more money being a receiver than
10:32i am a returner yeah so i i think it was kind of a two-way street i mean it
10:38would be exciting to be
10:39asked to be a receiver and all the looks that you got in training camp last year i would look
10:44at it
10:44like okay i got to survive these return situations so i can go do what's really fun and if that's
10:50the way
10:50you're looking at it we talked with devin hester and asked him about kavante turpin at the super bowl
10:54he said it was a guy that had sort of maybe lost his focus and and the main thing wasn't
11:00the main
11:00thing anymore
