00:00About who the commanders should consider trading.
00:05He was a first-round draft pick with this from heavy.com.
00:13They believe the commanders should trade Deron Payne.
00:19They write, in recent years, Payne has been a decent interior defender,
00:23but not a game-changer in the pass rush or against the run.
00:26Since his 2022 Pro Bowl year, he's averaged about four sacks per season
00:32with a missed tackle rate above 10%.
00:35And behind him is Johnny Newton,
00:40who last year had five sacks and 11 pressures while on the field
00:46for just 38% of the snaps.
00:50He's entering the final year of his deal.
00:52I believe it was like a $90 million deal.
00:55Yep, four years, $90 million.
00:57So he's making a lot of money.
00:59Should the commanders trade Deron Payne?
01:04Try to move him.
01:05He also says about Payne, he's declined of late,
01:08playing three straight seasons with an overall PFF grade below 61.5.
01:14So he's playing below the level of the contract he's getting paid.
01:18And look, I'm guessing Adam Peters does not have designs
01:22on extending Deron Payne.
01:24If he wanted to, he would have done that already
01:27because he's heading into the last season of his contract.
01:29Yeah.
01:30So if he's not in your future plans
01:32and you have another team that will give you assets for Deron Payne,
01:36I'm all about trading him.
01:38If you want to chime in, 1-800-636-1067.
01:43My only question would be, is Johnny Newton a good enough starter?
01:48Yeah, I mean, do you have confidence in Newton?
01:50And you rotate these guys.
01:53These big defensive linemen, they're not out there every play.
01:57Right.
01:57I could see Payne being dealt before the deadline in October, but...
02:01How much depth they have in the interior defensive line?
02:06Well, it kind of depends.
02:07Maybe you shifted about, like, Dietrich-wise,
02:10maybe he kicks inside if you were to deal Deron Payne.
02:15Yeah.
02:16Yeah, you're right.
02:17But remember, they went out and got settled.
02:18Mm-hmm.
02:19All right, so they got settled,
02:20and they signed the guy from the Giants to Davidson.
02:24Okay.
02:24Okay, DJ Davidson.
02:26They got Johnny Newton.
02:29Obviously, you got Deron.
02:30I mean, I don't know.
02:31I mean, is Deron better than Newton?
02:34I just, I think you probably need the depth.
02:38But I could see Payne being one of those guys dealt at the deadline.
02:42It kind of depends on the scheme Deronte Jones is going to use,
02:46because Kinlaw sometimes lines up on the outside.
02:48Right.
02:50I just think you have movable pieces there if you were to deal Deron Payne,
02:55and I just feel like if he's not in your future plans,
02:58and this isn't Deron Payne specific,
03:01any player that is not in your future plans,
03:03if you can get something of value for them,
03:06you should before they just walk out the door and sign with somebody else.
03:09Now, I know sometimes you'll get compensatory picks when veterans leave,
03:12and I'm not sure what they would get in return for Payne
03:15if he just walks after this season.
03:18Mm-hmm.
03:18But I feel like if you can trade him, and you can get something of value,
03:22I'm almost always going to be in that camp.
03:25So you're okay with trading him before the season starts?
03:27Absolutely.
03:29If Adam Peters finds a good deal and finds a suitor that wants to take him on.
03:34I don't think he was terrible last year.
03:36Now, the defense overall was terrible.
03:37I mean, he was part of a defense that was, I think, 31st in EPA last year.
03:43Yeah.
03:43Per play allowed.
03:45But they went out and got help.
03:47So it won't be all on the interior guys to stop.
03:50I'm not blaming it all on Deron Payne,
03:51but I'm just saying if you finish 30th or worst in defense,
03:56I almost have no problem getting rid of anybody that was a principal on that defense
04:01to try to improve your team.
04:03So in terms of interior defensive players, they've got Payne, they've got Kinlaw,
04:08you mentioned Tim Settle, they brought in D.J. Davidson,
04:12and then you got Johnny Newton.
04:14And then if you go beyond that, I mean, I'm not that familiar with Shy Tuttle
04:20on the depth chart.
04:22I don't know who he is, but they also have Deron Payne number one on the depth chart.
04:27True.
04:27For a reason.
04:28Doesn't it also just jump out to you that he had the massive season
04:32when he was playing for a contract?
04:34True.
04:35He had that year we had 11 1â2 sacks, 25 QB pressures, 64 tackles,
04:4018 tackles for loss.
04:43And then his play dropped off in the following three seasons.
04:48It's just...
04:49Well, now he's playing for another contract.
04:51Yeah, just reeks of played for a huge contract, got a huge contract,
04:55then did not live up to the contract in the following three seasons.
04:58Okay, well, if he's playing for another contract, maybe he has a big year.
05:01Maybe they're banking on that bump.
05:02Yeah.
05:02This year, they're just like, well, we'll just take him on his last year of his deal.
05:07We're not going to give him more money.
05:08But if he gives us seven or eight sacks, bumps that number up, is a more impactful player,
05:16gets a $25-plus million deal from another team, they'll just cash in that last year of his deal
05:22and then walk afterwards.
05:24He's clearly talented.
05:25Yeah.
05:26First-round pick.
05:27I don't know if the defense, with all the struggles, can afford to let talent walk out the door.
05:35It's just a matter of what sort of offers are, if there are offers.
05:39I mean, maybe there's just no market for Derron Payne.
05:42I don't know.
05:43But if I'm Adam Peters, I would be exploring it.
05:46I'd be at least thinking about moving him.
05:48Is he 28?
05:49He's 28 years old.
05:50He didn't get a bunch of his sacks in one game.
05:52I think he got three sacks.
05:54I want to say it was on Christmas Day, in the Christmas Day game.
05:59Don't quote me on it, but I think it was in the Cowboys game he had three sacks.
06:02All right.
06:03Let's go to the phones.
06:04800-636-1067.
06:07As a Commanders fan, would you be okay with them dealing Derron Payne away for draft picks
06:14and or players?
06:15Let's go to Eric.
06:16He's calling from Richmond.
06:17What's up, Eric?
06:20Hey, guys.
06:21How you doing?
06:21Good.
06:22What's up, Eric?
06:23Good.
06:24Good.
06:25So I'd be totally for getting rid of Derron Payne, but no one's going to give you anything
06:29for him.
06:29So, I mean, he's going to make $28 million.
06:31You already talked about his PFF grade.
06:35However, if they let him play this year and let him walk next year, they'll get a compensatory
06:40pick.
06:40Maybe a third rounder for him.
06:42So, I mean, I think that's what the team is planning on doing.
06:45Oh, so they'll get a third rounder.
06:47Okay.
06:47Yeah.
06:47Well, your compensatory pick depends on how much he plays, but assuming that he plays
06:53like he did last year, I think that would equate to a third round, but who knows that
06:57math?
06:58Your compensatory pick is based off of your AAV and what you signed for in the following
07:02year.
07:03So, if Derron Payne balls out on an expiring deal, like some people say is, since he's
07:10playing for a contract.
07:11And he signs a big contract.
07:12And he signs a big contract.
07:13Then you would be awarded a third pick.
07:15But let's say if he plays mediocre and just kind of gets a run-of-the-mill contract next
07:21season, maybe less than what he is getting now.
07:24Then you get a fifth or sixth.
07:25Yeah, fifth, sixth or seventh round compensatory pick.
07:28So, you're kind of gambling on his play this season if you're going to go the compensatory
07:33route.
07:33And I don't think there are going to be teams calling up Adam Peters saying, hey, we'd love
07:37Derron Payne.
07:38We'll give you a second round pick.
07:39I mean, nobody in their right mind is going to part with that sort of draft pick for Derron
07:44Payne at 28.
07:46I think he turns 29 this upcoming season.
07:48Well, Johnny Newton definitely has to step it up.
07:50I mean, he was a second round pick.
07:51Right.
07:51And they took him.
07:52They were shocked that he was available in the second round.
07:55Yeah.
07:55They talked about that.
07:57So, he's got to step it up too, right?
07:59Absolutely.
08:00He's got to play better.
08:00Yeah.
08:01I mean, the only way you deal away Payne is if you expect Johnny Newton to take that next
08:07step forward.
08:08And to be a guy that can give you, hopefully, Payne-like production at a much cheaper price.
08:15He's still playing on his rookie deal.
08:17I was surprised when they decided to let Jonathan Allen go as opposed to Derron Payne.
08:23Right.
08:23I thought they would have kept him, but they didn't.
08:25They decided to deal Jonathan.
08:27And I don't know.
08:29I think Derron Payne, I think he'll have a pretty good year this year.
08:33Specifically because he knows next year he's got no contract.
08:36Yep.
08:37Plus, his value could be higher by the trade deadline if he's playing well.
08:40That's true.
08:41That's true.
08:42He could elevate his value.
08:43And also, I know it's unlikely, but for a second-round pick or maybe even a third-round
08:49pick, but if the team and Adam agree to eat a majority of the deal, since the team is so
08:56under the cap, there could be a team that's kind of going for it, who's cap-strapped, and
09:02is willing to give up a third or second next year if you're willing to take on the contract.
09:08Maybe.
09:09Possibly.
09:09All right.
09:10Let's go to Eric.
09:10Eric, he's calling in from New York.
09:12Eric, thanks for listening in New York.
09:14We appreciate that.
09:15What's up?
09:18I'm all for keeping him.
09:19We got the new coordinator.
09:21We got some pretty decent linebackers.
09:23I think that takes the pressure off of him.
09:26And the dude is consistent.
09:27He doesn't miss games.
09:28He's not missing games with these stupid injuries.
09:31And I think $28 million might look like a bargain at the end of this year, and he's going to
09:35get a new contract.
09:36You need depth.
09:37A lot of people are sleeping on him.
09:39Well, they brought in there.
09:40Yeah, we need the depth.
09:41Yeah.
09:41And they brought in guys for that exact reason.
09:44They brought in Settle.
09:45They brought in Davidson.
09:46So, Johnny Newton's on the field for, I think it was 38%.
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:51I mean, what's Daron Payne?
09:52Is he 62%?
09:54Does he fill it out to make it 100?
09:56But these guys, especially those big dudes that weigh 350 pounds, I don't know exactly
10:02what Daron Payne weighs.
10:03I want to guess he's like 305, 310.
10:07But those guys, they're not on the field for 100% of snaps.
10:10He's listed at 320.
10:10Oh, 320.
10:11Okay.
10:12He's a big boy.
10:12Big fella.
10:13Right.
10:13You need depth there.
10:16Because they're in and out of the game.
10:19Yeah.
10:19So, I mean, you might see him dealt at the deadline, but he's not going to be dealt before the
10:22season
10:23starts.
10:23No.
10:23I did put this up as our junkies poll of the day.
