The Sports Junkies debate if the Washington Commanders should bring back Bobby Wagner.
Transcript
00:00What's going to happen with Bobby Wagner, who, of course, has started middle linebacker for the Commanders last two seasons,
00:06has racked up a ton of tackles.
00:08Some people have gotten really upset about his lack of coverage skills.
00:14I got upset at him when he wore the Seattle, I think, Storm jacket into Northwest Stadium the night that
00:20the Seattle Seahawks came in and boat raced them.
00:23That made me upset about Bobby Wagner.
00:25The conventional wisdom is they signed Chanel from Kansas City, linebacker.
00:31They draft Sonny Stiles, looks to be the middle linebacker of the future.
00:35No space for Bobby Wagner.
00:38But David Harrison wrote a piece talking about Bobby Wagner.
00:43And before the last game of the season last year, he was talking about how he broke into the league.
00:49And he said, I was blessed to have guys like Richard Sherman and Cam Chancellor and Mike Bennett and K
00:55.J.
00:56Wright.
00:58Those guys were kind of just like, don't worry about being wrong because you saying it out loud may remind
01:03me something I forgot.
01:04I learned early on it's okay to be wrong because they have somebody around you to tell you how to
01:10be right.
01:10Could Bobby Wagner be that guy for Sonny Stiles?
01:14He credits K.J. Wright for the success in his career, mentoring him.
01:19Could he be a mentor for Sonny Stiles?
01:22Sure, as long as he's willing to take an 80% pay cut, yes.
01:25I mean, he made like $9 or $10 million last year.
01:28He'd be great.
01:28They're not going to pay him $10 million to be a backup linebacker on this team.
01:32He'd be great in the locker room, but yeah, like you said, he's not going to be a starter.
01:34If he wants to take a pay cut down to $3 million and be a mentor for one more season,
01:38I wouldn't have any problem with that.
01:40But he's not making $10 million.
01:42He's not going to continue with the current salary that he's at.
01:46And he's not starting.
01:48He's also not starting.
01:50Do you pull him on running downs?
01:55Potentially.
01:56Why bother?
01:57So you're out.
01:58Don't want to see him in uniform ever again.
02:00It's over, John.
02:01He can play somewhere else.
02:02How about you make him a coach?
02:04Just make him a linebacker.
02:05Just make him the linebacker's coach.
02:07Well, he might not want to coach.
02:08I think he wants to go own a team or be commissioner or something.
02:11I would think he wants to come back for his 15th season because he's got over 2,000 tackles.
02:17He's 59 tackles shy of Ray Lewis's all-time mark.
02:21Okay.
02:22I mean.
02:22How many?
02:2359.
02:24Oh, okay.
02:25Maybe he wants to come back and chase that.
02:27Maybe he wants to play one more year.
02:27That's fine.
02:28If he plays one more year and plays starter minutes, then he's going to get that number.
02:32It's just what he does.
02:34I just don't think this is the place for him to do it.
02:37Quinn's left the door open, right?
02:39He's left the door open, but the whole mantra of this team during the offseason was to get
02:44younger and more athletic, especially on defense.
02:47By keeping Bobby Wagner in a prominent role, you're not getting younger and more athletic.
02:52You're maintaining the status quo.
02:54So the linebacker's coach is Ken Norton Jr.
02:57You don't think he'd want Bobby Wagner in the room with Sonny Stiles?
03:01He might, but you'd have to have a tough sit-down with Bobby Wagner and say, look, we love you.
03:06We love the leadership.
03:07You're a Hall of Famer, your first ballot.
03:08But we have young blood in here that's faster than you.
03:12There's plenty of other coaches with experience that coach him up.
03:16And you know what?
03:17Plenty of guys.
03:17It sounded like Ken Norton was so smitten with Sonny Stiles during the visit, the top
03:2230 visit or the top golf visit, that Bobby Wagner's yesterday's newspaper to him, I would
03:28guess.
03:29He is to me.
03:31I would guess.
03:32I would think.
03:32Probably the same with a lot of Commander fans.
03:34I would think most Commander fans would agree with you.
03:37I mean, he was great here, but it's time to move on.
03:41Great person, had an unbelievable career.
03:42Yep, going to the Hall of Fame.
03:43If you want to go play, go play somewhere else.
03:45That's fine.
03:45We just need to move on.
03:47Let's not treat Bobby Wagner like he's John Riggins, or Daryl Green, or Bonte Coleman.
03:54No, no, no, no.
03:54Like he's been here for five minutes.
03:56Mm-hmm.
03:59Like, you can cut the cord with Bobby Wagner.
04:01You can.
04:01You can.
04:02And they're going.
04:02It's okay.
04:02And I believe they probably will.
04:04It's okay to cut the cord with him.
04:05They're paying lip service.
04:06And same with Von Miller.
04:08Yeah.
04:08It's been nice having you here, but bye-bye.
04:11Best of luck in your next stop.
04:12The ultimate mercenary.
04:13I mean, literally, Bonte openly talks about, he's just chasing sacks.
04:18Go get your nine and a half or ten sacks with another team.
04:22Yeah.
04:23I mean, that's, the writing is on the wall for both of those guys.
04:26Dan Quinn told Rich Eisen, for players like that, you never close the door.
04:32Yeah, it's closed.
04:32They are remarkable, just not as ballplayers, but as teammates with Wags.
04:37He's one of the very best leaders I've ever been a part of.
04:41The standards that he sets as a ballplayer, as a teammate, the traits, preparation mentally,
04:46physically, the practice habits.
04:48I've used his example all the time.
04:50I'm honored to have coached him at two different spots.
04:53Right.
04:54Yeah.
04:54It's all true.
04:55Yeah, but he loves him.
04:55It's all true, except the part that the door's really always open.
04:59Hey, if he's so tight with him, here's what Dan Quinn needs to do.
05:02During the offseason, send him a plane ticket, have him come out and visit you at your fancy
05:07house in Hawaii, and have a few beers while you're watching the sunset.
05:12That's going to be your relationship with Bobby Wagner going forward.
05:16Let's go to David.
05:17David, what's up, man?
05:18Let's see if the phones are working today, Cakes.
05:20David, you're over the junkies.
05:22How are you, Val?
05:23What's up, guys?
05:24How y'all doing?
05:25Hey, David.
05:25What's up?
05:27I've never spoken to you guys.
05:29I've talked to Grant and Danny, and I've talked to a couple of other people in there,
05:34but I got something that I think you guys would find very interesting.
05:39All right.
05:40Go ahead.
05:42And so my sister, she's a trainer over there right there in Redskins Park.
05:49And a lot of guys you guys aren't talking about.
05:53You ain't talking about Jordan McGee.
05:56Well, we've talked about him before.
05:58Apparently, he has.
06:00Go ahead.
06:00Apparently, he has.
06:01You got it with him and Lou Vu, and you got Sonny.
06:06First of all, he has put on about 15 pounds.
06:10He's gotten bigger.
06:12So he's been studying.
06:14He's been behind.
06:15He's been a year or two years now.
06:17He's from Temple, right?
06:19Yeah.
06:19Whatever.
06:20He's a depth piece.
06:21He's not going to start ahead of those guys.
06:23No, no.
06:24I'm not saying that.
06:25What I'm saying is he's been behind Bobby.
06:29And you guys are sitting there saying, oh, maybe Bobby's going to go.
06:33You know, he'll get rid of.
06:34You know, I'm going to tell you right now.
06:36I've been in there, too.
06:37Because I've gone in there, and I'm just, you know, I'm at all.
06:40But that dude, Bobby, Bobby's like a staple in there.
06:43Like, he is, he is like one of the head.
06:46Bobby Wagner, Bobby's like one of the, just his personality and everything.
06:51Like, everybody respects him.
06:53Like, he is, he is one of the, he is one of the heads.
06:58He's one of the, one of the best teammates that you can get.
07:01You know, guys, don't cut me off.
07:02Because I want you guys to hear, I want you guys to hear this.
07:06And I think it's important.
07:09I think that this linebacker core that we have, that we, that AP has created, could be possibly the fastest,
07:19the smartest, the best linebacker core.
07:23I mean, that might all be true.
07:25It ain't going to include Bobby.
07:27Yeah.
07:27So you want to keep Bobby?
07:29No, no, no.
07:29You want to keep Bobby?
07:30I'm going to, Bobby, I'm just going to tell you, he's not going anywhere.
07:35Bobby's going to be there, regardless if he's going to be there coaching somehow.
07:39No, he's going to get Norman in there.
07:41He's got Kerrigan.
07:42Regardless, he's not going anywhere.
07:44They already released Kerrigan.
07:47Bobby's going to be there, man.
07:48They're not going to get rid of Bobby.
07:50Okay, that's fine.
07:51That's fine.
07:52He could be a coach.
07:52We have no problem with that.
07:53He's not going to be there.
07:55All right.
07:55But what I'm saying is, what I'm saying is, we, we have, just think about Sonny Stiles.
08:02You already know.
08:03You don't know what he's going to do in NFL.
08:04You never know when anybody comes out of college.
08:06Sure, the dude is fast, and he's tall.
08:10I'm with you on there.
08:11He's quick.
08:11He's smart.
08:12Okay?
08:13And you got, you got, you got, you got Shanon.
08:15You got, you got, you got McGee.
08:16You got Louvoo.
08:17Okay?
08:18These guys, there's, I don't think there's a, think about it in the NFL.
08:24What linebacker core is, is, I think it's the best linebacker.
08:28It's not even, it's not even a question.
08:30All right.
08:30All right.
08:31All right.
08:32Burgundy gold glasses, big time.
08:33I mean, they're, they're the best linebacker core already.
08:36I mean, they've never played with each other.
08:38I think they've dramatically upgraded their speed.
08:41Yeah.
08:41Right?
08:41I do think that Louvoo could have a, you know, it's kind of a comeback year.
08:48I think Sonny Stiles has all the potential in the world.
08:50It's obvious.
08:50Let's see how it all fits together.
08:52Let's see how it all fits together.
08:53But I don't see a role for, I just don't see Bobby at this stage in his life wanting
08:57to be an assistant coach in the NFL.
08:59I think he has aspirations way beyond that.
09:02I don't think he's going to go down that track.
09:04And I don't think they want him here as a player.
09:05If you want to chime in 1-800-636-1067 is the number coming up at 825.
09:12It's a game show Wednesday.
09:14We will play junker D for your chance to win tickets to go see Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan.
09:18And remember at nine o'clock, Paul Tabone, president and general manager of the Washington
09:24Nationals joins us here on the fan.
