For the second time in its history, Trinidad and Tobago has been elected by the United Nations General Assembly to serve as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for a two-year term.

00:59For a small island developing state, earning a place in the Security Council is a remarkable achievement that reflects the
01:06confidence and respect Trinidad and Tobago commands among the nations of the world.
01:12This success is a testament to the vision, dedication and steadfast leadership of Prime Minister Kamala Prasad-Pisoso, whose commitment
01:21to advancing Trinidad and Tobago's interests internationally has helped secure this historic victory.
01:28Minister Sobers later gave a formal statement.
01:32The Honorable Prime Minister Prasad-Pisoso has instructed that we use our tenure on the United Nations Security Council to
01:38champion issues, the voices and aspirations of all people, and more importantly, to amplify the unheard voices to ensure that
01:46justice and equality anchor last in security.
01:50The Foreign and Carcom Affairs Ministry said Trinidad and Tobago secured the votes of 181 countries out of 191 countries
01:59in one round of voting, including from all five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the US, the UK,
02:08France, China and Russia.
02:10Specifically, during our tenure, we will place particular emphasis on advancing the women and children on the peace and security
02:17agenda, addressing the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, and examining the implications of artificial intelligence for international
02:26peace and security.
02:28The UN Security Council has five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the
02:35General Assembly.
02:36For Trinidad and Tobago, this is not our first time on the Security Council.
02:41We had the privilege of serving on the Security Council within the years 1985 to 1986.
02:47Our pledge to use that Trinidad and Tobago will be a balanced, principled, reliable, and pragmatic partner in the room.
