CARICOM TO DEPLOY ELECTION OBSERVERS IN T&T

There will be observers from CARICOM for this country's General Election this year, whenever it occurs.  Juhel Browne reports.

00:00The Prime Minister has not yet announced the date for the 2025 General Election in Trinidad and Tobago.

00:06However, the Office of the Prime Minister announced on Monday that the Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr Carla Barnett,

00:13has accepted the invitation extended to the Secretariat by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley

00:19to deploy an election observation mission to oversee this year's General Election.

00:24The OPM recalled that during his contribution in Parliament on December 9th of last year

00:30in the debate on a motion to approve the Draft Elections and Boundaries Commission Order 2024,

00:36the Prime Minister announced that an invitation would have been sent to the CARICOM Secretariat

00:41to invite a delegation to visit Trinidad and Tobago when the General Election is called.

00:46The OPM said the correspondence was sent on December 11th, 2024.

00:51The OPM further said in correspondence to the Prime Minister, dated January 13th, 2025,

00:57the CARICOM Secretary General accepted the invitation and indicated that the CARICOM Secretariat

01:03is fully prepared to undertake the necessary administrative arrangements for the deployment of a CARICOM Election Observation Team

01:10to Trinidad and Tobago whenever it receives further information regarding the scheduling of the election.

01:17The opposition has called for international election observers.

01:21The OPM said the government of Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to the nation's tradition of free, fair and transparent elections.

01:29Prime Minister Rowley has announced he will resign as the head of the government at some point later this year,

01:35leading to the possibility of the date for the General Election being called by the next Prime Minister, Stuart Young.
