00:00Welcome to Florida.
00:02We're having a party!
00:04Home to theme parks, golden tans and 400,000 Brits.
00:08This one is the one with the view.
00:10Wow!
00:11Who've made the Sunshine State their new home.
00:14I feel blessed every single day.
00:16I'm living the American dream. I definitely am.
00:18They've swapped drizzly winters and gas bills for new careers
00:22and seemingly endless fun in the sun.
00:25Two, one, yay!
00:28Get it right and life in Florida can be like a dream come true.
00:32I get to drive a convertible. It's fabulous.
00:35But getting here and staying here takes hard work.
00:38Good job, good job. Keep it going, team!
00:40Grit.
00:42And determination.
00:44The glamorous side of living in Florida.
00:46These are the Brits who've made their own Escape to Florida.
00:54Today on Escape to Florida...
00:56Let's get it out of the box.
00:58Joanne from Hull finds herself in a tight spot
01:01as she fixes up a property to sell.
01:03So I think that is going to have to come off.
01:08Liverpool-born Lee struggles to keep his wife's birthday party a surprise.
01:13It's my wife's birthday. I'm going to give her a little surprise birthday for her.
01:16Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:18And Andreas from Southampton has to weave some magic to impress his teenage daughter.
01:23They basically call me Andreas Harry Potter Bird.
01:32Tampa, on the Gulf Coast, is a Florida property hotspot.
01:36And home for the last 21 years to mum of two, estate agent Joanne from Hull,
01:41who also does up houses to sell on.
01:45Everything should be fine. If it's not today, it'll be tomorrow.
01:48My parents started a real estate and mortgage business when I was 16,
01:52and I started out as their assistant, working with them.
01:55I actually bought my first car and my first house, flipping houses with my dad.
01:59Are they doing their signing today?
02:02Erm, I think so.
02:04OK. It is definitely kind of ironic that the tables have turned.
02:08My very first job was as my mum's assistant, and now she's my assistant.
02:15Joanne's son, 18-year-old Angelo, is also hoping to join the family business.
02:20Thanks, Mum.
02:22What are you going to do for lunch?
02:23I got some sandwiches yesterday.
02:26Angelo's graduating from high school this month.
02:29He wants to go to college and get a business degree,
02:31and then eventually come and work with me full-time.
02:34Once you've finished your breakfast, we are going to head into the office real quick.
02:38I've got a lot of box. I have to drop off to Grandma and get some keys from Jane.
02:41So you get to see Grandma today.
02:43OK.
02:44Also known as Joanne's assistant at work, her mum, Jeannie.
02:49Hello.
02:50Nice of you to show up.
02:52Mmm.
02:53Nice to see you, sweetheart.
02:55My mum is the best assistant ever.
02:57I do give her grief a lot with the banter.
03:00I try and keep it professional, but every once in a while it slips.
03:05What am I looking in? Dash or...?
03:07No, that's fine.
03:07OK.
03:08Could you go any slower?
03:12We actually get on really well.
03:15She'll sometimes go, oh, mother!
03:17And I go...
03:20All right.
03:21Love you, bye.
03:21Bye.
03:22Bye, sweetheart.
03:23See you soon.
03:24Love you.
03:25All right.
03:25Get some work done.
03:27Slacker.
03:28All right, let's go.
03:29Luckily, Joanne's next stop is just down the hall
03:32to see office manager, fellow Brit and best pal, Jane.
03:36I need to pick up the keys for 20.
03:39Jane has been my best friend now for about the past six years.
03:42We take every single vacation together.
03:44We're together every weekend.
03:47There's really not much that we don't do together.
03:51Yeah.
03:51Awesome.
03:52I need to shred this.
03:55Joanne's main job today is working at her most recent purchase,
03:59a two-bed condo she bought six months ago
04:01to do up and sell on as quickly as possible.
04:05Something else she does with her pals.
04:07Jane's husband, Billy, is my partner for the flip,
04:11so he's the one that we'll be meeting down at the condo.
04:14I think this is our fourth or fifth one that we've done together.
04:18It's tired.
04:19I'm just warning you.
04:20It's tired.
04:21OK.
04:22Be nice, be gentle.
04:23I will try.
04:25With the office stuff sorted,
04:27Joanne and Angelo can now try to tick off some jobs at the condo
04:31so she can get it on the market and hopefully get it sold fast.
04:36Bye.
04:37Bye.
04:44The Gulf Coast of Florida has a vibrant British community,
04:48attracted by its semi-tropical climate,
04:51like pub owner Liverpool-born Lee,
04:53who moved to the Sunshine State in 2003.
04:58You now have to load this as well and make it go noisy, don't you?
05:02My ex-wife's mum lived here so we come over to visit
05:05and we just fell in love with the place.
05:07It's fabulous, I mean, what a place to live.
05:0990% of the time it's sunny.
05:10I just love it here.
05:13Seems to be a few people in tonight.
05:15Five years later, Lee left his IT career
05:18to buy this British bar and restaurant,
05:20The Horse and Jockey.
05:22Making sure the place is clean,
05:23the guys behind the bar getting there.
05:24You get that rush when everybody turns up at once.
05:27We're the official Liverpool supporters club for Pinellas.
05:30The staff are great, the customers are great.
05:32You know, we've decorated it in such a way
05:35that it looks a little like a pub back home.
05:37We are regulars at the pub.
05:39It's a neighbourhood pub where everybody
05:41knows everyone.
05:42I feel like I'm back in, you know,
05:44in God's country in the UK.
05:53Every Monday morning, Lee has to take stock
05:56and work out what's needed for the coming week.
05:59Hi, son. How are you, Dad?
06:00What are you up to?
06:01Putting chairs down, finishing mopping.
06:04Lee's eldest son, Connor, also works at the pub.
06:07Born in the UK, Connor moved here when he was just one
06:10and now has a Florida-born brother and sister.
06:13Connor, he's 23 years old.
06:15Then we've got Edie, who also works at the pub.
06:18She's a server.
06:20And then we have Shay, who doesn't work at the pub yet,
06:23but he will do soon.
06:24Connor's setting the restaurant up at the moment,
06:26kind of get an hour before any of the customers turn up.
06:29And, yeah, it's like clean the floor,
06:31clean the tables again, reset the bar.
06:33Connor doesn't run the pub at the moment.
06:35I'd like for him to get there in the next two or three years.
06:40Although the bar side does well,
06:42it's the restaurant that counts for 65% of the business.
06:46So Lee has to make sure the British food is top-notch
06:49to keep the customers coming to support himself,
06:52his new wife, Taryn, and his kids.
06:55The menu at the pub is just classic British dishes.
06:58You know, you have fish and chips, cottage pie.
07:01We've got sausage rolls on there.
07:02I think the difference between an American bar and an English bar.
07:05I'm sure they get things out of a box and throw them in the fryer.
07:08We make everything fresh.
07:11I'm just doing the list for the wholesalers.
07:13Pizza boxes, we need mustard, chicken-based limes, pork.
07:17The recipes are mine and chefs that I've hired over the years.
07:20We kind of, you know, picked each other's brains.
07:22We're always trying to improve.
07:23Do you need anything other than limes and oranges?
07:25No, all good.
07:26See you later, son.
07:27Bye, Dad.
07:28With eldest son Connor prepping at the pub, Lee's youngest son, Shay,
07:33is helping at the wholesalers.
07:35Shay is going to be waiting for me there.
07:37Edie's going to drop him off.
07:38He normally helps me and he kind of knows where everything is.
07:42We've been there so many times.
07:44Tampa is usually one of the sunniest spots in the Sunshine State.
07:48But today, the weather has taken a turn.
07:52I always describe it as, like, man's rain.
07:54It's, like, proper rain.
07:55You know, in the UK, you get this, like, perpetual drizzle.
07:59We have that downpour and then the sun comes out,
08:02which is great.
08:03I'd rather they get it over with.
08:05All right, son.
08:06You all right?
08:07Yeah.
08:08I can get restaurant supplies delivered by loads of different companies,
08:11but I like to go there and put your hands on the fruit and veg,
08:14make sure it's fresh.
08:15The Americans love ranch and blue cheese on the wings.
08:19After a busy weekend at the pub, there's a lot to restock,
08:22including ingredients for wife Taryn's most loved meal.
08:27Taryn's favourite is probably...
08:28We have the Thai curry and we need the coconut milk for that.
08:31It's actually getting a lot harder to find English stuff.
08:34Black pudding, we have to get that imported.
08:36And, you know, certain things you used to be able to get,
08:38you just can't get any more.
08:40All right, we've got lemonade, both cheeses, beets, mushrooms,
08:42silverware, oranges, skirt steak.
08:44It's mustard.
08:45I'm going to grab some yellow mustard.
08:47It's in that yellow metal tub, right?
08:48Yeah, yeah.
08:50Family's really important to me.
08:51Shea still can't drive, but once you've got a car, you lose them.
08:54So, I think it's, you know, it's so important to spend
08:56that little bit of time that you have.
08:58It's like a massive game of Jenga.
09:01In reverse.
09:03Shopping for the pub over, Lee and Shea have to load up the car
09:07and hurry for Lee's next job, organising a surprise party
09:11for wife Taryn tonight.
09:14Yep.
09:31Daytona Beach on central Florida's Atlantic coast
09:34is one of the state's most popular and a paradise for play,
09:38both in and out of the water.
09:41Oh, yeah.
09:43Former squatty turned fitness instructor Andreas from Southampton
09:47is taking full advantage of its benefits.
09:51They're just dumbbells, but, like, we've got enough kettlebells, I think.
09:53I have been in Florida for just over four years.
09:56I moved here because I met a girl.
09:58Unfortunately, it was a fail.
10:01But by then, Andreas had firmly fallen for the sunshine state.
10:06It's like a workout before a workout.
10:09The outdoor lifestyle is incredible over here,
10:12and for me, it's just a better place to own a business,
10:15particularly my business in the outdoor fitness world.
10:19Dumbbells, OK.
10:21I need to set up some cones as well.
10:23Andreas has swapped his army physical training instructor post
10:27for a civilian career as a health and fitness coach.
10:31How's it going, guys?
10:32It's going.
10:33You ready for this? Yes.
10:34Good. It's going to be fun.
10:36Today we have boot camp on the beach.
10:38This one is just for, like, 20 to 30 people today.
10:40My daughter's doing this one as well, which is amazing.
10:4313-year-old Jen splits her time
10:45between her dad in the US and her mum in the UK.
10:49Jen is very smart, funny, really, really funny.
10:52She has me belly laughing a lot.
10:54Jen!
10:55It's really difficult to spend time away from my daughter.
10:58I do struggle a lot,
10:59but I try to be as present with her as I possibly can.
11:02Nine months ago, Jen started at a private online school,
11:06which means she spends two months at a time in Florida with her dad,
11:09then two months in the UK with her mum.
11:12My school is very interesting,
11:14and I enjoy it because I get to experience, like,
11:17the best of both worlds.
11:19And, you know, when I get, like, bored of the cold weather,
11:22I just come back here.
11:24So it's great.
11:25Ready?
11:26Three, two, one, off you go!
11:30Well done, guys.
11:31Awesome.
11:32It's the summer holidays
11:33and Jen only has a couple of weeks
11:35before she heads back to Britain.
11:37To make the most of their precious time together,
11:40he's brought her to work.
11:42You should have listened.
11:43I need to be more engaging.
11:44Oh, my God.
11:46I don't want to leave my dad.
11:47I don't want to leave the nice weather.
11:49And then the beaches.
11:50We both love working out and stuff,
11:52and we love doing sports.
11:54Adopt a plank position, guys!
11:57Shana, who comes to Jen,
11:58is, like, the best part about it as well.
11:59Like, she's my baby girl,
12:00and, like, to give her these experiences
12:02of being out here and being on the beach.
12:04Yay!
12:09The team had a great time.
12:10Everyone got a good workout in.
12:12Well done, guys.
12:13Good job.
12:14Well done, guys.
12:17Boot camp was great.
12:18I really enjoyed it.
12:19It's nice doing what we do together,
12:21because I'm the only kid there,
12:22and I guess I just feel special being there.
12:24The other boot campers
12:26seem to have enjoyed it too,
12:27especially with the addition
12:29of a post-workout barbecue.
12:30Mm-hmm.
12:33We all encourage each other,
12:34and Coach Andreas makes it a lot of fun.
12:37So we should take him to Pilates next.
12:39Oh, I would die of Pilates.
12:41Yeah, let's do it.
12:43It's great to see him encourage her.
12:45She, you know, she's a young teenager,
12:47and we all just kind of seem to get along.
12:50Running your own business as a single parent
12:53does have its challenges.
12:55It's difficult when sometimes you're trying to work,
12:57especially as an entrepreneur.
12:59There's definitely a lot of parent guilt
13:00when you can't always give her all the time.
13:02So, with limited time left
13:04before Jen returns to the UK,
13:06Andreas' next task is planning a special treat
13:09to show her more of Florida's fun side.
13:13We're going to go to Universal,
13:15which we're really excited about.
13:16We're looking forward to spending some time away,
13:17get away from work,
13:18and have a great time down there.
13:29On the other coast of Florida, you'll find Clearwater,
13:33where Joanne from Hull and her son Angelo
13:35have arrived at the two-bed condo.
13:37She's flipping in the hope of making a decent profit.
13:41Get that going, Josh.
13:43Nice to meet you.
13:44All right. Let's do this!
13:46Eighteen-year-old Angelo is hoping to follow in her mom's footsteps.
13:50I'm looking to learn a lot from my mom about what she does
13:52and just how she rebuilds things, makes it all look better.
13:56Because, you know, I could be doing this someday in the future.
13:58I'm just going to go and get changed real quick.
14:01And then I think I want to get those LEDs replaced out.
14:04OK.
14:05Angelo is definitely my little entrepreneur.
14:08So for him, I think, you know, seeing how successful I've been
14:11and everything that I'm doing,
14:12I think that kind of sparked his interest in wanting to come and work with me.
14:17Joanne bought the condo six months ago for $240,000.
14:21This will be her fifth doer-upper.
14:23And once the renovation's finished,
14:25she's hoping to put it on the market for over $300,000.
14:29I want to show you what it looked like
14:30so you can really appreciate and see how much work that we've done on it so far.
14:37Oh, this is a really old house.
14:38Right? Look at the kitchen.
14:41No, the bathroom was the worst.
14:44Yeah, that is insane.
14:46Isn't that crazy?
14:47I want to kind of teach Angelo some of the roles,
14:49some of the things that we do.
14:51So I'm going to be putting up some light fixtures.
14:54All right, let's get these lights figured out.
14:57I need you to go ahead and cut the power for me
14:59because we don't want to get electrocuted today.
15:02Obviously, the more we do ourselves,
15:04the more profit we're going to make.
15:07The renovation didn't get off to the smoothest start,
15:10with storm damage and contractor issues delaying her schedule.
15:14I'm desperate to get it finished and get it listed
15:17so I can get this one off my books.
15:19All right, grab one of the LEDs for me.
15:22All right, hopefully I've got the right one.
15:25Do you have wire strippers?
15:26Let me have a look in the toolbox.
15:29Sorry, Mum, I got it.
15:31Working upstairs is fellow Brit Billy,
15:34who's come to help Joanne out with the renovation.
15:39So I managed to get the shower head changed to the...
15:43Oh, OK.
15:44..the rain one.
15:45The first flip that Billy and I did was for my mum's condo,
15:49and we just did everything ourselves.
15:51It was really good to get us started,
15:53get our feet wet, learn from our mistakes.
15:56Well, Ollie, it's good, Billy.
15:57Yeah, great.
15:58I like it. Thank you.
16:00I'm actually not a handyman.
16:01I'm an emergency room nurse.
16:04I have absolutely no training in being a handyman,
16:08but it's something I really enjoy doing.
16:10But downstairs, Angelo has hit a snag.
16:14Mum, you got the wrong fittings for this light.
16:16It's not going to screw it right.
16:19Why? What's wrong?
16:22Oh, shoot.
16:23It's clipping, not screwing, right?
16:26Yeah, I have no clue how it is.
16:28Oh.
16:29So these are the old fixtures with the clips.
16:32So I'm either going to have to find some of the clips
16:35that are going to be able to fit and slot in,
16:37or I'm going to have to change the LEDs
16:39and try and find them with the clips fitted.
16:42So I don't know.
16:42I have to have a look and see what I can figure out.
16:45Even minor issues can add to her costs.
16:48And six months into what should have been a quick renovation,
16:52Joanne needs the rest of the build to go to plan,
16:54or the profit she's hoping to make could start slipping away.
16:59Oh, God.
17:07In the Sunshine State's waterfront community of South Pasadena,
17:11pub owner Lee from Liverpool is back home with Taryn,
17:15his wife of four years.
17:17What are you going to do with Shea tonight?
17:18Is he going to be in the pub?
17:20Yeah, he'll have to be, won't he?
17:21Taryn also works in the drinks trade,
17:23selling wine for Jon Bon Jovi's rosé brand.
17:26And today, it's a very special day for her.
17:30It's Taryn's birthday.
17:32My favourite thing about Taryn is she is, without doubt,
17:35the easiest-going person I think I've ever met.
17:38Nothing faces her, which is a good job, to be honest.
17:43Lee and Taryn begin the celebrations early
17:45with some festivities and gifts over the weekend.
17:48But he saved the last one for today.
17:51Happy birthday.
17:52Oh, it's so pretty.
17:55You're welcome.
17:56It's beautiful.
17:58It's a beautiful carry.
18:00Taryn thinks she's having a low-key evening tonight.
18:03My sister and her friend are taking me
18:05to a nice place on the beach just for a drink.
18:08Lee's not invited.
18:10I don't mind.
18:11That means I don't have to pay.
18:14All right, I'm going to the gym.
18:15I know you're going to work.
18:17All right.
18:17See you later.
18:18Happy birthday.
18:18Love you.
18:19See you later.
18:19Love you, too.
18:20Have a good day.
18:22What Taryn doesn't realise is bigger plans are afoot
18:25at Lee's British pub, The Horse and Jockey.
18:28Tonight, we're doing a surprise birthday celebration for Taryn.
18:32It starts at 6 p.m., so I've invited everybody she knows,
18:37and hopefully it'll be a success.
18:40Lee's juggling running the pub and organising the party,
18:44so eldest son Connor is helping out,
18:46as well as planning his own special treat.
18:49What are you going to do for Taryn tonight?
18:51I'm going to make Taryn a favourite Cosmo.
18:53Two ounces vodka, one ounce orange liqueur,
19:00three quarters of an ounce of lemon.
19:02And then a half ounce of simple syrup,
19:05which is just equal parts sugar to water.
19:08Three quarters of an ounce of cranberry juice,
19:10and then you're done.
19:11Connor is widely regarded in the pub as the best mixologist.
19:17It actually gets reflected in the sales.
19:19A beer is like $7,
19:20and then you're selling cocktails for $13, $14, $15.
19:25Tonight, Taryn's signature cocktail will be on the menu,
19:28so Connor will be busy putting his mixology skills to good use.
19:32It tastes good.
19:33I think Taryn will love that, actually.
19:35It's, like, nice and citrusy,
19:37and she likes that.
19:38She always has, like, a lime juice in whatever it is she's drinking.
19:43Back at Lee's house,
19:45daughter Edie is making her own surprise for stepmum Taryn,
19:48a classic British birthday cake,
19:51despite her being American.
19:53Oh, wait.
19:54I need to preheat the oven.
19:56I'm making a Victoria sponge cake.
19:59It's a British one.
20:00I had to do the, like, conversions to cups and everything.
20:04Taryn is lovely.
20:06I love Taryn.
20:07She's really, like, made a change in my dad's life, you can tell.
20:11Edie's hoping her Victoria sponge
20:13will be the icing on the cake of Taryn's birthday surprises,
20:17but it's not quite going to plan.
20:19This already isn't looking that promising.
20:22I'm going to mix it again.
20:24It's kind of lumpy.
20:28When my dad found out that I was, like, going away for college,
20:31the first thing he got me
20:33was a bunch of stuff for cooking and baking.
20:36This is looking more promising as the minute goes on.
20:39The perfect chance to channel her British roots
20:42with a good old cuppa.
20:45I love tea.
20:48I know in England they drink tea all the time.
20:51That's not really a thing here.
20:53When I was younger, I used to say water and not water,
20:57and everyone was like, what the hell are you saying?
21:00As Edie has the cake under control,
21:02Lee has an hour and a half to finish the rest of the prep
21:05before the party starts.
21:07We're going to have to go now and get some balloons
21:09for this birthday extravaganza.
21:13The people who are in town have called,
21:15and hopefully they all show up.
21:18Taryn, she's great.
21:19It all means a hell of a lot to her.
21:22Along with the balloons, Lee's asked local florist,
21:25pub regular, and friend Lucy to make up a special bouquet.
21:30They are wonderful.
21:31Do you love them?
21:33I love them.
21:33Thank you so much.
21:35I knew she'd love something, you know, clean and classic.
21:38I hope she loves it.
21:39Yeah, I'm sure she will.
21:43While Lee's been sorting gifts,
21:45son Connor's been making sure the pub is ready for the party.
21:48Just clean all the tables, getting ready for Taryn's birthday,
21:51and then, yeah, get her cocktails ready,
21:54and she'll be good to go.
21:56Taryn is the best step-mom.
21:59She's great to my dad, great to Edie and Shay.
22:01Super friendly, super nice.
22:04Expecting 30 to 40 people tonight for Taryn's birthday.
22:07So we've got 20 minutes, 30 minutes to get all ready.
22:10Connor, Edie, Shay, and Lee have all gone to a lot of effort
22:14to make tonight's special for Taryn.
22:16With guests now arriving,
22:17all they need is for the lady herself to arrive
22:20and to like the surprise.
22:37On the other side of the Sunshine State in New Smyrna Beach,
22:41fitness coach Andreas from Southampton
22:43is getting ready to take daughter Jen on a special trip
22:47before she heads back to the UK next week.
22:51You've got magnesium to make sure that I can sleep really well.
22:54You're like, you're the queen of ice masks.
22:56But where's yours?
22:57Wow.
22:57I'll show you all my ice.
22:58Yours is way, way prettier than mine.
23:00I know, you should get one like that.
23:02Exactly.
23:03As it's Jen's summer holidays...
23:05Oh, look.
23:06I look good.
23:07Andreas is putting building his business on hold
23:09to enjoy some family time
23:11at one of the most visited theme parks in the world.
23:14I feel like you packed really well today, Jen.
23:16Well done.
23:16Very organised.
23:18As a former squaddie,
23:19even the packing involves military precision.
23:22Always got to be practical.
23:24I'm ex-military.
23:24You need to make sure you pack your stuff properly.
23:26You should get a better style.
23:28You should like maybe add a bit more youth,
23:30like nicer clothes.
23:31You just look basically the same things.
23:33You just wear a T-shirt and shorts.
23:35I live in Florida.
23:35White, beige...
23:37What, do you want me to wear a suit?
23:38Black.
23:38That's what he wears.
23:39Do you want me to wear a tuxedo?
23:41There's one other important woman in Andreas' life
23:44who's joining him on the trip.
23:47Hello.
23:47Hey, how's it going?
23:48Good.
23:49How are you?
23:50Good to see you.
23:50Andreas' mum, Helen.
23:52Oh, are you all packed?
23:53Yes.
23:53Let's go.
23:55What's some quiche?
23:57Helen moved to the States ten years ago
23:59and lives just over half an hour away.
24:02Mum was living in Arizona for about eight years
24:04and as soon as I moved to Florida
24:06she came out to eat by my side
24:08and it makes Florida feel more like home.
24:12Want a tea?
24:13Yeah, why not?
24:15You never stop worrying about your kids, ever.
24:18Every time I come up I bring food.
24:20I even clean the house.
24:24Jen?
24:25You good?
24:27Yeah.
24:27Ready for Universal?
24:28I am.
24:30Despite the British-looking weather...
24:32No, no, no.
24:34They're off for a last-minute family treat
24:37before Jen has to go back to the UK.
24:39Did you bring me some cream on?
24:41I did.
24:42Check that off.
24:43And when they do get to Orlando
24:45thankfully the sun is shining.
24:50Take some photos.
24:52Get closer.
24:55I feel like I've actually gained a stronger relationship
24:58with my parents when I'm not with them.
25:02We can make the most of time with each other
25:04when we have it.
25:07Jennifer is just amazing.
25:09Like, I love her so much
25:11and I just love to hug her.
25:14I'm pumped for this.
25:15Same.
25:16Are you excited?
25:16What are you going to see?
25:17Are you going to see it at the front or the back?
25:19I struggled for the first year
25:21after leaving the army
25:22but I just started focusing on
25:24what was important
25:25which was building a better life
25:26for me and my kid.
25:30Woo-hoo!
25:35As avid Harry Potter fans
25:37they're heading first
25:38to familiar territory.
25:40This is Hagrid's motorbike.
25:42Isn't Hagrid your favourite character?
25:44Yes.
25:45Even Mum Helen's braving this one.
25:47I think Mum's going to scream the loudest.
25:52It should be really fun.
25:54Yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun, right?
25:54I think it'll be a good one to start on.
25:59The motorbikes will begin moving immediately.
26:02Clear the way.
26:04No turning back now, Helen.
26:16Oh, my God.
26:17That's so fun.
26:21Oh, man, that was so much fun.
26:23I know.
26:23That was really fun.
26:24I don't think I was that scared.
26:26It was fast and it was crazy
26:29and we got dropped down.
26:31My Nana's a sweet person
26:33and we love going out together
26:34and I think we have a good laugh.
26:36Go and look at photos, shall we?
26:38Nice.
26:39Hey.
26:40Oh, Mum!
26:43You look like you're hanging on for dear life.
26:49Next up, it's a reminder of home.
26:53Well, Harry Potter's home
26:54as they head to Diagon Alley,
26:55the famous cobbled shopping street.
26:58This is amazing.
27:00Hooray!
27:06OK, so we're going to be watching ones.
27:08Whoever casts the most spells is the winner.
27:10Me and Jen are going to win this.
27:11I miss Jennifer every day when she's not here.
27:15We just completely love having her around.
27:17Who knows we're going to beat him anyway?
27:19No chance.
27:20Yeah, he won a bit.
27:21No chance.
27:22What, better?
27:22Yeah.
27:23We're going to do this tonight.
27:24All right, we can do this.
27:25I beat my dad and Uno a lot,
27:27like, almost every time,
27:28because I'm just better.
27:29He says, it's like,
27:30oh, it's larkin' it.
27:31I'm like, no, it's skill.
27:33It seems like the whole family love a competition,
27:36but these aren't just any old wands.
27:38The handle will vibrate
27:39and the tip will light up
27:40when you do your magic correctly.
27:42OK.
27:42I think I like this one.
27:43You like that wand?
27:44I like the colour of it as well.
27:45A really good wand.
27:47Yeah.
27:48To cast a spell,
27:49they need to use their wands
27:50at one of 30 special locations around the park.
27:55They basically call me
27:56Andreas Harry Potter Burn.
27:58I think I've watched
27:59the Harry Potter movies
28:00more times than anybody else here,
28:03so, like,
28:03I think I have a pretty good chance of winning.
28:06Well, they wanted me to win the most,
28:09that's why they gave me the map.
28:10Oh, I have one.
28:11Oh, you do have a map.
28:12Damn.
28:13So, with maps at the ready,
28:15it's time to find out
28:16who's paying for dinner.
28:18I'm ready to beat you guys.
28:26One hundred miles away
28:28in the coastal city of Clearwater,
28:30Joanne from Hull,
28:32Son Angelo,
28:33and handyman Billy
28:34are at her condo,
28:36trying to tick some jobs off the list
28:38so she can get it on the market
28:39and hopefully make a profit.
28:43The actual trim for the shower is gone,
28:45so we have to find out
28:46what kind of trim it is.
28:47Yeah, let's see.
28:48Let's take a look.
28:49Let me see what we've got.
28:53With Billy on hand to help
28:55and the light fittings
28:56not yet ready to install,
28:58Son Angelo's accepted
28:59an offer he can't refuse.
29:02OK, my girlfriend's here.
29:04I've got to go.
29:05All right, well,
29:05I ordered the clips for the light,
29:07so instead of redoing the whole thing,
29:09we should be able to
29:10put them up with the clips.
29:11Sounds good.
29:12OK.
29:12All right, Benny.
29:13All right, my one.
29:14All right.
29:15Yeah, let me see when.
29:17Billy's now got the job
29:18of helping with the next task
29:20on Joanne's list.
29:21We need to figure out the vanities.
29:23OK.
29:24Because I am a little bit concerned
29:25about the downstairs bathroom.
29:27Sure, let's go.
29:27All right.
29:29Joanne measured the two bathrooms
29:30and ordered bespoke vanity units
29:33for them online.
29:34Let's get it out of the box.
29:38So she needs to make sure
29:39they fit before a contractor
29:41adds the custom-made granite tops.
29:45So I think that is going to have to come off.
29:52Can it go off?
29:53What is it, the baseboard?
29:55Oh, it's this, isn't it?
29:57Yeah, it's this trim.
29:58It's going to have to come off.
29:59I enjoy working with Joanne
30:01because we have so much fun.
30:03We work through the mistakes
30:04and we work through learning together.
30:09We've measured the space correctly,
30:11but unfortunately,
30:12it's so tight in here
30:14that this part of the door frame
30:18on this side
30:19is preventing us
30:21from being able to slide in.
30:23Projects about half an inch this way.
30:25So this hole would have to come off.
30:29OK, you go that way.
30:30I'll be the gentleman
30:30to take the weight at the bottom.
30:33Now they're trying the unit upstairs
30:35to see if they can salvage
30:36at least one of them.
30:40All right.
30:40Well, this one already looks like
30:42it's going to fit.
30:43Yes.
30:44But Joanne spotted another issue.
30:47This unit is smaller
30:48than the original one,
30:49so there's now a gap
30:50in the floor tiles.
30:52If we're going to take
30:53this strip of tile out
30:54and re-tile it under there,
30:55we can go with the same size,
30:57but we're not going to find a match.
31:00It's going to be incredibly difficult
31:01to find a match
31:02because this house is sold.
31:04There might be a box
31:05of spare tile left over
31:07in the shed.
31:08We have this idea
31:10of the plans and the goals
31:11of what's going to happen that day
31:12and nine times out of ten
31:14never goes according to plan.
31:18There's boxes down here.
31:19OK.
31:21Oh, hallelujah.
31:22Perfect.
31:23Oh, my goodness.
31:24So we'll just tile that?
31:25We'll just tile it.
31:27Before they can fit
31:28the new tiles in unit,
31:29they need to replace
31:30the skirting boards,
31:31so Joanne gets to work
31:33stripping the old ones out.
31:35God, these things are so old.
31:37This is the glamorous side
31:39of living in Florida.
31:42I actually really like
31:43doing this side of things.
31:46It's a learning process.
31:47A couple of flips down the line,
31:49it could just be
31:50Billy and I just doing
31:51everything ourselves.
31:52But when you're not
31:53a skilled tradesperson,
31:55the risk of getting things wrong
31:57increases.
31:57I'm really hoping
31:58we can get these tiles
31:59out in one piece.
32:00That's my biggest worry right now.
32:02Get these tiles out in one piece
32:04and then be able to
32:04have a clean area here
32:07tile it, make it level.
32:09Any more mishaps
32:10could prove costly
32:11to her profit,
32:13so Joanne needs
32:13the rest of the renovation
32:15to go without a hitch.
32:18God, if I crack
32:19one of these tiles,
32:20I'm going to cry.
32:29In South Pasadena,
32:31pub owner Lee from Liverpool
32:32is busy juggling his job
32:34and welcoming guests
32:36who come to a surprise party
32:38he's organised for wife Taryn.
32:41David!
32:42Oh my golly, what's going on?
32:44Why wouldn't you celebrate
32:45your wife's birthday
32:46in a big way, eh?
32:47I just love being
32:48around the family.
32:50How are you?
32:51I'm great, how are you doing?
32:52I didn't see you sneaking.
32:53Taryn's sister Rhonda
32:54has the job
32:55of keeping her occupied
32:57until 6pm,
32:58but now they're late
32:59and Lee can't get hold
33:01of them.
33:01Kim, where are they?
33:02Sorry, my mum.
33:04Where are they?
33:05All over the bridge.
33:06Luckily,
33:07Rhonda's daughter-in-law
33:08Kim is on the case.
33:10They're out to dinner right now,
33:11so I'm tracking her.
33:12That's me,
33:13that's her driving.
33:15They're on the move.
33:17Lee needs to make sure
33:18everyone else
33:18knows what to do.
33:20Hey guys,
33:21so if I could just
33:21have your attention
33:22for a second.
33:23It's my wife's birthday
33:24and we're doing
33:24a little surprise birthday
33:25for her.
33:26Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,
33:28she's going to be
33:29walking through the door
33:30in about 30 seconds,
33:33so we're just doing this.
33:34Surprise!
33:35After putting in
33:36a lot of time and effort,
33:38Oh, here we go,
33:39she's walking up.
33:40Lee's gathered around
33:4130 of Taran's nearest
33:42and dearest
33:43to help her celebrate.
33:45Surprise!
33:49Surprise!
33:58Woo-hoo!
34:04What's going on?
34:07I think that went
34:08as well as could be expected.
34:10Those are gorgeous.
34:13Completely blown away.
34:15Very loved
34:17and this is so nice.
34:19Lee's son Connor
34:20also has his own surprise.
34:23Connor's arranged
34:24a special cocktail for her.
34:25Taryn!
34:26Oh, God.
34:28Taryn's happy birthday, Cosmo.
34:30I love it.
34:32In the kitchen,
34:33Edie's finishing off
34:34her treat for Taryn.
34:35All right,
34:37we're going to light it
34:38and then we're going
34:39to bring it to Taryn.
34:40I need all of you
34:41to sing with me.
34:42After weeks of planning
34:44and the whole family
34:45chipping in,
34:46Edie's cake
34:47is the cherry on top
34:48of a whole evening
34:49of surprises.
34:52Happy birthday,
34:54dear Taryn.
34:58Happy birthday
34:59Happy birthday to you.
35:03Happy birthday to you.
35:04Happy birthday to you.
35:07The kids did so well.
35:08Connor's excelling
35:09behind the bar.
35:10Edie's fantastic
35:10and she's so proud
35:12of that cake she made.
35:13And Shay always mucks in.
35:14So Edie made that.
35:20It was a hit.
35:22They like it.
35:25Actually,
35:26it was really good.
35:27Okay, yay.
35:29Paul Hollywood,
35:30I would love to be
35:31on the Great British Baking Show,
35:32so you know where I am.
35:359.87.
35:36Really,
35:37I would have settled
35:37for a seven.
35:39Anything above a five.
35:41Feel very loved
35:42and it was a massive surprise.
35:44I'm very lucky.
35:45They're great kids.
35:48I thought today went well.
35:50I'm really pleased
35:51with the way that went.
35:52Taryn had no idea,
35:53so that's fantastic.
35:55How are you?
35:57Good, how are you?
35:58Good, thank you.
35:59I'm like,
35:59I'm like blown away.
36:02After pulling off
36:03a successful soiree
36:05with Taryn,
36:06her guests
36:06and the pub customers
36:07all happy,
36:08Lee can finally relax.
36:11So now we're going to
36:12probably go and have
36:13a few beers
36:13and celebrate
36:14Taryn's birthday.
36:16A fizzing end
36:18to a great surprise.
36:20Cheers.
36:34In the city of Clearwater,
36:36realtor Joanne from Hull
36:38and handyman Billy
36:39have finished fitting
36:40the lights and bathroom
36:41units at the condo.
36:43I like it.
36:44It will work.
36:45It will work.
36:47It's two months later
36:48and she's back
36:50with mum Jeannie.
36:51I have a couple
36:51of bits of stuff
36:52for staging.
36:53It was just looking
36:54a bit bare.
36:55She's hoping to make
36:56a decent profit on it.
36:59Well, you have to
36:59open the door anyway.
37:01The goal for today
37:02is have mum come
37:04and take a look
37:04at it with me
37:05and then go over
37:06pricing so we can
37:07get it listed
37:07and done today.
37:09Oh, I can't wait.
37:10Are you ready?
37:11Oh my God.
37:11Can't wait to see.
37:14Oh.
37:18When did you get
37:19that talented?
37:23Jeannie may now
37:24be Joanne's assistant
37:25at her real estate agency
37:26but she used to be
37:27a real estate agent
37:29herself.
37:30So Joanne wants
37:31her opinion on what
37:32this fully renovated
37:33property could sell for.
37:35Are you ready
37:35for the kitchen?
37:39Holy moly.
37:43With lots of challenges
37:44along the way
37:45Joanne and her friends
37:47and family
37:47have transformed
37:48the place
37:49from top to bottom.
37:51Oh my word, Joanne.
37:53This is...
37:54What a difference!
37:56I saw it
37:57when she first bought it
37:59and it was a mess.
38:02I am blown away
38:04at the effort
38:05they put in.
38:05It looks fantastic.
38:08After a mishap
38:09measuring for the bathroom
38:10vanity unit
38:11downstairs
38:12Joanne sourced
38:13a new one
38:13which fits perfectly.
38:16Look at this.
38:18Oh wow!
38:20Joanne I'm just...
38:23Thank you mummy.
38:25Oh yeah,
38:26everything works.
38:27Don't worry.
38:29Joanne is such
38:30a hard worker.
38:32She puts
38:32110,
38:34120% effort
38:36into all she does.
38:37Well done.
38:39I'm so proud.
38:41And she and Billy
38:43have worked wonders
38:44finishing the upstairs
38:45bathroom too.
38:46Ooh, yes!
38:48Yeah, what a difference.
38:49Yeah!
38:51Oh gosh.
38:52I can't believe the difference.
38:53Like you would never
38:54know that this was...
38:56I know.
38:56Before Joanne
38:57puts the property
38:58in the market
38:58she wants to add
39:00the final finishing touches.
39:02One of the most important
39:03things for the listing
39:04is to make sure
39:05that it's staged
39:06correctly
39:07and the pictures
39:08are done correctly
39:09because obviously
39:10that's what's going
39:11to draw people in.
39:12Where do you want
39:13this to go?
39:14Like right here?
39:15Maybe?
39:15This one?
39:16Yeah.
39:16Yeah, because
39:16that one would go...
39:17Yeah.
39:18After a last bit
39:19of tidying...
39:21Jeannie, come on.
39:22Just a little bit here.
39:26It's time to work
39:27out the final figures.
39:29The initial investment
39:30was 240.
39:31I've probably spent
39:32about 20,000.
39:34To try and make
39:35as much profit
39:36as possible
39:37she's aiming high.
39:38I think I'm going
39:39to start 339, 990.
39:41All right, let me see
39:42how these pictures
39:43came out.
39:44Oh, that looks
39:45really good.
39:46All right, go ahead.
39:47So, ooh, here we go.
39:49Let's make it live
39:50and then let's go.
39:51And...
39:53We're active.
39:55I'm really excited
39:57that we've managed
39:58to get it listed
39:59on the market.
40:00It's a bit quiet
40:01at the moment
40:02but I've got
40:03every confidence
40:04because this is
40:05such a beautiful
40:08condo.
40:12I know, I'm just like
40:14after all these
40:15months of doing this.
40:16I know, I know.
40:18It's on the market now.
40:20I know.
40:20Let's get it sold.
40:21Yeah.
40:22It's a lot more
40:22challenging to live here
40:23than people realise.
40:25I work extremely hard,
40:27extremely long hours
40:28but obviously
40:29the rewards pay off.
40:31Despite initial delays
40:32to the build,
40:33Hitcher's learning
40:34on the job
40:35and a difficult
40:35property market,
40:37less than three months
40:38later,
40:39Joanne sold the house
40:40for $280,000,
40:42a 20 grand profit
40:44and she's already
40:45moved on
40:46to her next doer-upper
40:47in nearby
40:48St. Pete Beach.
40:50I just spoke to Chrissie.
40:52Everything's with
40:52the underwriters
40:53and everything looks good.
40:54Awesome.
40:58There is absolutely
40:59no way I would have
41:01this kind of life
41:02back home.
41:03The money that I'm making,
41:05the freedom,
41:06the travel,
41:07the living in paradise.
41:09I'm always going to be
41:10very, very thankful
41:11that I'm here.
41:18In Orlando,
41:20former army physical
41:21instructor turned
41:22fitness coach Andreas
41:24is treating his daughter
41:25Jen and his mum Helen
41:27to a memorable
41:28family trip
41:28before Jen goes back
41:30to England
41:30for a few months.
41:33This is the map,
41:34guys,
41:34that we're going to
41:35try and find some
41:35magic and cast some spells.
41:39The trip was really
41:39important because I feel
41:41like it just allows me
41:42to be present with her.
41:43This is the entrance
41:43to Hogsmeade,
41:44so then you've got
41:45one, two, three spots
41:46where we can cast some
41:47spells.
41:48Okay.
41:49Just to spend that time
41:50with her is precious
41:51right now because
41:52she's growing up quick.
41:53Really, guys?
41:54Yeah.
41:55I have a great
41:56relationship with my dad.
41:57I think we're quite close
41:58and I really appreciate
41:59everything he's done for me.
42:01To make it more fun,
42:02self-proclaimed
42:03Andreas Harry Potter Burn
42:05has proposed a spell-off
42:07to see who's paying
42:08for dinner.
42:09First up, Jen.
42:13We've got some
42:13fireworks going off.
42:15Smashed it.
42:18Each magical spot
42:20has its own special effects,
42:21but it turns out
42:22Andreas isn't a natural
42:24wizard after all.
42:27Come on, man.
42:29I guess I'm not
42:30doing this properly.
42:31I'm not wizardy enough.
42:33What's going on?
42:34You want to go, Mum?
42:39There you go.
42:42Mum smashes her, too.
42:44Could it be second time
42:45lucky for Andreas?
42:46Incendio.
42:50I didn't...
42:51No, that was me.
42:51What?
42:52No way.
42:53Did you actually?
42:54Yeah, I felt it.
42:55You felt the vibration?
42:56Unbelievable.
42:57She's obviously way better
42:58as being a wizard of me.
42:59She can take this crown
43:01right now, but
43:02the war isn't over.
43:04Dinner is on Andreas,
43:06then, and what better
43:07than a good old
43:08British classic?
43:12The biggest meal I miss
43:13about being in the States
43:15is, like, fish and chips.
43:16Because you generally
43:17can't get a good amount of time.
43:18I know, yeah.
43:19Put it to the test, shall we?
43:20Yeah, exactly.
43:21Do you fish and chips?
43:22Yeah, thank you so much.
43:24It looks really good.
43:25I can't wait to have it.
43:27When I go back,
43:28I'm definitely going to
43:28miss my dad,
43:29because we've been
43:30with each other, like,
43:3124-7, basically.
43:36Chippy chips.
43:37Good chippy chips.
43:39But I think it's going to be
43:41even more special
43:42when I see him again.
43:44Right, let's do it.
43:44That was delicious.
43:45Wow, that was really good.
43:46It was really good.
43:49With their energy levels
43:50restored,
43:51Jen and Andreas
43:52now want to tackle
43:53the park's biggest ride,
43:55the Velocicoaster.
43:58But Mum Helen's
43:59decided to give it a miss.
44:01You can hear the screams
44:02from him.
44:03Oh, my God.
44:04Are you missing out, Mum?
44:05I'm sure I am.
44:06It's going to be the last
44:07time you ever get to do this.
44:08That's OK.
44:09I'm good with that, so...
44:10LAUGHTER
44:13I am extremely proud
44:14of Andreas.
44:15What he's achieved,
44:16and I think it's all down
44:17to the seven years
44:18of military that he had.
44:19When he came out,
44:20he knew exactly
44:21what he wanted to do
44:22and he's achieved it.
44:23See you later, Mum.
44:24Have a good one.
44:25Wish us luck.
44:25Yeah.
44:28It's Florida's tallest
44:29and fastest roller coaster
44:31with a drop of 140 feet,
44:35reaching speeds
44:36of up to 70 miles an hour.
44:39So Andreas and Jen
44:40will need to hang on
44:41to their hats
44:42and stomachs
44:43after that big dinner.
44:45Yeah!
44:46You made it!
44:48Yeah!
44:50You did it!
44:51That was so good.
44:52Fantastic.
44:53That was amazing.
44:54I'm so glad you did it.
44:55Yeah, definitely.
44:56Yeah, I'm so glad.
44:57You're fearless now.
44:58Yeah.
44:58I'm always that brave.
45:01After a lovely day
45:02creating lots more
45:04happy family memories...
45:05It's been the best time.
45:07Like, I really, really
45:07enjoyed today.
45:08I enjoyed just being
45:09with everyone so much.
45:11They're going out
45:12with a bang
45:13at the final event
45:14of the day.
45:15Cine-sational,
45:16a symphonic spectacular.
45:22Ghostbusters was amazing.
45:23That was a throwback
45:23and so that was cool.
45:25Good to see that.
45:25I had the minions one.
45:29It's been a beautiful day
45:30so we've got lots of memories
45:31to take home with us.
45:32We're going to go home,
45:34shower up,
45:35and get into beds
45:35and we're going to
45:36sleep well tonight.
45:37A fantastic end
45:39to a memorable family trip.
45:41Love you guys very, very much.
45:43What an experience, right?
