00:00So the SEC had their their spring meetings down in Destin, Florida, a lot of stuff was coming out of
00:06there, you know, talking about the playoff, talking about, you know, breaking away, talking about independent governance, all of those
00:15things, strength of conference, what stuff looks like, what was when you were down there, Bill, when you're listening to
00:21all that and hearing that stuff come out, what was the stuff that really struck a chord with you the
00:26most?
00:26Well, I think the playoff stuff's almost window dressing. You mentioned the breaking away thing, and Kirby was very open
00:33about that. So what that says to me is, well, one, the SEC breaking away from college football would not
00:38be a good thing. But to Kirby's point, we need rules. What are the rules in college football now, right?
00:46Between they were talking about tampering to NIL, to transfer to how many years a kid's eligible, there are no
00:52standard.
00:53There's a lot of rules in too many gray areas in the sport. So not to mention the escalated cost
00:59of a roster. So it doesn't, it doesn't surprise me one bit that Kirby's bringing this kind of things up.
01:06But at the end of the day, it is not beneficial for the SEC to break away from college football.
01:11It would not be beneficial for the SEC and Big Ten to do it because this sport spans the entire
01:16country.
01:17Do you think people in, oh, I don't know, Wyoming or people in Texas are going to care about the
01:25Big Ten when there's no Texas tie?
01:27I just think you have to have the entire country involved on some way, much like the NFL has been
01:32able to pull off.
01:33Well, that's the amazing thing about the NFL is they've brought that all collectively together. And so much of it
01:39has been now centered on, like you said, the rules and then the playoff element where I don't think anyone
01:45here we've talked about loves the idea of the 2014.
01:48And I'm just curious how firm Bill, like Greg Sankey said, they're going to evaluate it. I thought he would
01:54come out with a softer stance.
01:56I know there's some monetary constraints and financial constraints when it comes to the elimination of the SEC championship game,
02:02but it's, I'm uncertain as to where this is going to go.
02:10And maybe it ends up staying at 12 for a little bit longer.
02:13Yeah. And I think, you know, the fact that they didn't even talk about 16.
02:17So, I mean, and I was going to ask both of you guys this, like if you were in a
02:22situation, I know Bobby, when the first 12 team playoff happened, I know I remember standing with you next to
02:28the, we were close to the field toward the end of the game.
02:30And you were telling me about how much it would have been, how much you would have given to play
02:34in this situation. Right.
02:35And being a 12 team home game at the shoe, when we double this to 24, I'm wondering how many
02:42college athletes are going to be super excited about playing in five games.
02:46In a playoff situation where, and steel, maybe you could weigh in on this is what if you're a first
02:53round draft pick on a team that's seated number 22 and you're a 28 point underdog?
02:59Do you think that guys will, I think guys are going to opt out, which is crazy. It sounds crazy,
03:05but you have guys transferring off playoff teams right now.
03:09Yeah. I mean, I could, I could definitely see that where a 23 ranked team, you got a guy who's
03:14probably going to be a first rounder.
03:15You're going into the shoe. You're going into that going between the hedges. And I mean, you're likely going to
03:21get blown out by 30, 35 plus points.
03:23So why risk the added injury? And the next thing you know, like that dude's likely just a pillar of
03:29your team.
03:29So now the game's going to be even worse. So I could see that possibly happening. If it does, then
03:34I don't know if we're able to go back on the 24,
03:36but I think that happening would kind of just, that just shows that college football is just not going down
03:40the right path.
03:41Cause that'd be terrible. No. And when Bobby and I had that conversation on the field, that was a 12
03:45team.
03:46And I think you can get away with it with a 16 team. I think I mentioned Elko in the
03:50last segment.
03:50One of the things he said that really resonated with me is that this isn't a participation sport.
03:57It has to mean something, right? It has to be special. It should be hard to make the playoff.
04:01I don't know for certain programs, if it would be difficult. I'm not saying that like to downgrade Ohio state,
04:08but you know, does it take away from some of the regular seasons Ohio state's had Ohio state's had 11
04:13and one seasons where it didn't make a playoff. Right. So, you know, it should be difficult.
04:19And I think in this format, as we pointed out at sporting news earlier this week,
04:23I looked at the 80 teams that would have made the 2014 playoff over the last 12 years,
04:28Ohio state and Alabama were the only two schools that made it every single season.
04:32So it would almost feel like a birthright at that point.
