City detective also describes discovery of blood-stained shirt at Newt Lee's home

City Detective John Black took the stand following Harry Scott.

Asked to describe the discovery of the shirt, Black testified that he and Sergeant Bullard went to the rear of 40 Henry Street and searched Newt Lee's room.

"What did you find?" he was asked.

"Lots of things," he replied.

He said the shirt was found at the bottom of an old barrel, not near the top. The search took place on Wednesday following the murder. Black confirmed that he had also seen the shirt Lee wore Sunday morning, describing it as a brown woolen shirt. The one recovered at Lee's home had been washed but not ironed.

Asked whether he had any definite leads on the person who committed the crime, Black said he did not.

The coroner then turned to the matter of Lemmie Quinn's account of his movements on the day of the murder.

"What did Mr. Quinn say to you about his trip to the factory that Saturday?" Black was asked.

"Mr. Quinn said he was not at the factory on the day of the murder," the detective answered.

"How many times did he say it?"

"Two or three times. I heard him tell Detective Starnes that he had not been there."

Asked what he had instructed Mr. Frank to say to Newt Lee during a conference between the two men, Black replied that he had said nothing in particular, only that Frank try to get Lee to tell the truth.
