00:00Former Attorney General Garvin Nicholas says while he has full confidence in the DPP,
00:06public confidence in the police service is now at a critically low point and that is deeply
00:12concerning. What we are seeing here is a complete erosion of the the police and confidence that
00:22the Trinidad and Tobago has in the police which is extremely dangerous because what holds a
00:29society together is the rule of law. Nicholas is again urging the consistent use of body cameras
00:37across the police service. He says it is important for the public to see accountability in cases
00:43involving alleged police wrongdoing. I call upon the Prime Minister this morning, I call upon the
00:49Minister of Homeland Security, the Minister of Legal Affairs and all of the ministers with
00:55responsibility in this area to listen to the population and to put policies in place that
01:01would bring confidence back to the police service. And sociologist Dr David Muhammad tells the morning
01:08edition public interest must guide decisions on whether individuals are charged, noting that police
01:16often draw innocent blood. Trinidad and Tobago as a Caribbean nation is a country where the police
01:26have killed more innocent people than criminals have killed people in other Caribbean countries. He also
01:36points to a broader pattern of fatal police shootings over time, arguing that these incidents raise serious and
01:44persistent questions about policing culture and the protection of citizens the service is mandated to serve.
01:52We had Andrew Morris who was arrested for a kidnapping, severely beaten in police custody,
01:58died in police custody and then an explanation was given that he fell off a chair. Same thing with
02:05Joel Belcon aka Devon Charles. You had Billy Toussaint killed by a police officer on June the 11th 2020.
02:13He had a land dispute as many people in our society do. He had a land dispute with the police
02:20officer.
02:21Next thing you know he's killed by the police officer. Nicole M Romany, TV6 News.
