00:00How quickly the NFL changes. It was only seven years ago. It was 2019 that when a certain Tom Brady
00:09was asking for two years, just just $50 million, it's $25 million. You know, if you do the math, 25
00:17a year.
00:17And by the way, this wasn't anything groundbreaking because Drew Brees had just gotten that exact same deal. That was
00:25the farewell tour deal. You're playing for two more years. That's going to be it. The Saints didn't even put
00:30up a fight. They went, Drew, you got it. We want you to go out. This is your team. We
00:36don't want you to ever go play for another team. Absolutely. That sounds like a fair deal. And so what
00:41did Tom Brady do? He said, well, Drew Brees has got that. I'm not going to be greedy, even though
00:45I am the franchise.
00:48I'm going to ask for the same thing. And you remember when he was standing there in that interview and
00:52they were talking to him and he goes, hey, you can go talk to, you know, Mr. Kraft about that.
00:56Yep. I'll never forget. Yep. And then it all fell through and they wouldn't give him a mere $25 million
01:02a year. Talk to Mr. Kraft. Come on. Come on. That's it. You had that ready to go. Very good.
01:06Excellent. Well done. And then what happens this past weekend, seven years later, Matthew Stafford signs a one-year contract
01:16extension.
01:17worth $55 million. As much as Tom Brady wanted more than what Tom Brady wanted for two years. He got
01:25it for one. And that is only a seven-year difference. And the NFL has already changed that much.
01:33So when you look at Stafford getting that for one year. And by the way, he can make up to
01:3760 with incentives. Oh, sure. And by the way, that's a good team. So he could end up making those
01:42incentives. I got a number. Go ahead. Keep going.
01:43What do you think Drake May is going to be worth? $650 to $700 million.
01:50So that averages out to be. They're going to sign it for that long. Like a 10-year deal.
01:55Why wouldn't you? Don't you think how the Kansas City Chiefs did it with Patrick Mahomes?
02:0010 for $450. Yeah.
02:02And then you kind of tweak it as you go. As you need. You know, as, I mean, doesn't that
02:09look like a pretty good deal that they signed to him?
02:12So to me. $45 million a year. That was six years ago.
02:15Is it a risk to do a 10-year deal on a guy like on a Drake May if we
02:19think he's going to be trending, you know, like he is right now?
02:22I can't. To me, that would be the way to go. So that, you know, $65 million a year for
02:2810 years is $650 million.
02:30Drake might not want to do that, right? Because you can argue that Mahomes probably should be cashing it again
02:34right now.
02:36That's fair. You might be right. Yeah.
02:37And maybe they agreed that they would do that, that they would renegotiate in good faith. I don't know.
02:40That would be awesome if Drake's like, nah, you know what? Can we just do a few years?
02:46Yeah. Let's just go one year at a time here.
02:48But the real question, though, is that how much guaranteed money will he get?
02:51Because they've got these new contracts that, I mean, who was the one who got the first fully guaranteed contract?
02:56It was, I know that Josh Allen.
02:58Sir Cousins did.
02:59Cousins. That's right. Cousins got a big one.
03:01And I know that.
03:01Allen got $250 million guaranteed.
03:03He got $250 guaranteed. And that's the real number, isn't it, Ted?
03:07Isn't it the guaranteed money that everyone's going after?
03:10It is, but for that position, there's pretty much a guarantee he's going to live the life of the contract
03:15or other positions and not so much.
03:16But, yes, the number you really want to get up guaranteed is obviously just the guaranteed.
03:22In that position, though, it's more guaranteed than any other position.
03:26So, I mean, we're talking $400 million guaranteed?
03:30I bet if Josh Allen two years ago got $250 guaranteed.
03:37$400?
03:38He might get $400.
03:40We're talking not next summer, but the summer after.
03:42So, two more years, the TV deals are going crazy.
03:46I mean, the salary cap's over $300 million.
03:49So, Ted, you have two instances coming up where the Patriots, of all people, who aren't known for doing this,
03:54could set the market.
03:56Christian Gonzalez, this year, he's going to have to set the market.
04:00I can't wait.
04:01I'm worried about them signing Gonzalez.
04:02I can't wait.
04:03Do you think there's a chance it won't happen because of the Drake deal?
04:05I think there's a potential to that.
04:07Ooh, jeez.
04:07You've got A.J. Brown here.
04:08What are you paying, A.J.?
04:09$30 million?
04:10Yeah.
04:10So, I just – they've never done it.
04:14They've never come close to doing that where they've got to pay three big deals, A.J. Brown, Christian Gonzalez,
04:19Drake, May.
04:20They've never done it.
04:20If you're Christian Gonzalez and they don't come to a deal before the season starts, what do you do?
04:26Dude, there's serious – I mean, I have to seriously think about not showing up.
04:31Kind of like a Logan Makin's kind of deal.
04:33How many weeks in did Logan Makin finally get it?
04:35Ten.
04:35Geez, man.
04:36Ten.
04:36Ten weeks, and then he got – they traded his ass.
04:39Well, they should have drafted a corner higher, right?
04:41They took Prunty in the fifth round.
04:42If they knew this was developing behind the scenes and they were having debates about whether to sign Gonzalez,
04:47you should have taken a guy's second or third round.
04:49Well, because Ted's right, but the Patriots don't set the market, and they're going to have to do it twice.
04:54That's why I'm just – I can't – hurry up.
04:55I want to get to that.
04:56I want to see how they handle it.
04:58They just never – but I can't imagine – like, there's going to be so much pressure from the fan
05:02base.
05:02Everybody knows it's – there's no secret to – we know the cap is crap, so you can't sell us
05:08on,
05:09hey, you know, the guy's got to take less so that you can build a bigger – no, no, no,
05:12no, no.
05:12You can pay guys.
05:14Yep.
05:14And so, you know, it's out there.
05:16We all know.
05:16You can't fool us.
05:17And so how do the crafts respond to that?
05:19That's – I can't wait to see what happens.
05:21Oh, man.
05:22It's going to be – I mean, that is going to be – if he sits out – oh, jeez,
05:25man.
05:26I mean, someone said he maybe should sit out training camp.
05:29OTAs.
05:29Now, could Marcus Jones step up for, like, an eight-week stretch and be a good corner?
05:34Serviceable.
05:35Like, at least, you know, wouldn't cost you games or no.
05:38That would just – the trickle-down effect there would be horrible.
05:39God bless him.
05:40I mean, he was – he had such great coverage on all those, you know,
05:43Drake London touchdowns they caught again.
05:45I mean, he's only – he can only do so much.
05:48I mean, he's –
05:48His size was.
05:49He's right.
05:50You definitely take a step back.
05:53If you have him covering X receivers, that's – you don't want to live and die by that.
05:56No.
05:57Mm-mm.
05:57Nope.
05:58Because Carlton Davis is good, but I don't think you put him – did you put him above average?
06:01You didn't put many above average.
06:02Carlton Davis is above average.
06:04Above average.
06:04Okay.
06:04So they have one above average corner.
06:07They have a really – their two corners and their slot corner are very good.
06:12But if you lose Gonzalez, that changes everything.
06:14Changes everything.
06:15You better hope the rookie is really good.
06:16Oh, man.
06:17Just get – boy, it's so funny.
06:18He's got leverage, man.
06:19It didn't even hit me until now that they are going to have to set the market twice.
06:22Like, I mean, because there's no way they're going to – Drake's going to take anything less than what's already
06:26been out there
06:26because Drake already has proven he's an elite quarterback.
06:29And the Christian Gonzalez thing is sitting right here.
06:31You can't sign him without making him the highest paid at his position.
06:35So get ready.
06:37Which the Rams currently have done, right?
06:39McDuffie is their corner.
06:40He's making $31 million.
06:41They just signed Stafford.
06:42Yeah.
06:43So there's already evidence in the NFL you can have this.
06:45Yes, but the Krafts don't do this.
06:47They don't do this.
06:48Maybe they don't do this.
