00:00Let's get to this whole deal with Christian Gonzalez, because we all agree that Christian Gonzalez, you know, when he
00:06gets paid, he's going to set the market.
00:08And you would have to think that the Red Sox or the Red Sox, the Patriots are at least anticipating
00:15having to pay him that amount of money because he is an important piece of this team.
00:20God knows in the Super Bowl when this team got embarrassed, he was one highlight, one guy that you could
00:24look at and go, dude, he did everything he could do.
00:27And I know they're coming up on having to pay a lot of money in a lot of important places
00:31between Drake Mays, you said predicted $600 million contract.
00:36I agree with you. And then Christian Gonzalez setting the market. There's a lot of questions to be answered.
00:42But Mike Giardi had an interesting point that he made. I think this might have been on NBC Sports Boston.
00:49An early edition. An early edition. And he was referencing something that Burt Breer had said,
00:54and that was that Christian Gonzalez might not be looking at his position and saying, you know,
00:57I want to set the market for this position. He might be looking at setting the market for a defensive
01:03player in general
01:04and looking at some of these edge rushers. Yes. Who are making tons of money. What's the, what's the high
01:09number now?
01:09It's like 50 million, I think. Miles Garrett. Yeah. Will Anderson, I think. Oh, Willie Anderson just said that.
01:14Yep. With Houston. Yep. Yeah. So, so I think he got like 50 or 55, 50 million. Jeez, man. Boy,
01:19how does that make you feel, Ted?
01:20Oh, dude. You know, good for them. Good for them. I just, I don't want to be the bitter old
01:25guy.
01:26No, no, no. Good for them. Good for them. That is a very mature attitude to have. I don't know
01:30if I would be as big of a man,
01:31but these guys are making so much money. But, but Christian Gonzalez, and I got to be honest,
01:35I don't, I don't knock this style of thinking. He's like, why am I just being paid for being my
01:42position,
01:42the highest of my position? Why not just a defensive player? And Mike Giardi said that might be a bridge
01:49too far.
01:50Let's take a listen. And I got to tell you, both of you, Kayla, Rich, I think if that's what
01:55he wants,
01:55I don't think they're going to go there. And we can argue whether that makes sense or not,
01:59but I just have a fan. They're going to go, you know what, dude, you gave us seven games last
02:04year,
02:04the way we wanted you to play. As you remember, flip the switch after the Baltimore game. And granted,
02:07he was pretty good before, but after is when they really embraced it. I could see them saying like,
02:12we're not, we're not going to be the team that does that. If someone else wants to do that for
02:16you,
02:16go ahead. We'll take two first rounders like they got for Sauce Gardner. Go ahead.
02:21I don't know if anybody's going to give them two first rounders after they saw what happened to
02:24Sauce Gardner, but it's, it's fascinating. I mean, because you're, you're setting a bad precedent.
02:29So if you, if you trade them, okay, yeah, you get two first, but then you're, you know,
02:34you're, you're going to take a step back and at that position. And it doesn't, it feel like we're
02:40in win now mode, right? You just went, went to the Superbowl. Um, and you also got the guy,
02:45I think for an affordable, he went later in the draft than what he was supposed to. So you got
02:50him,
02:51I think a little bit cheaper, uh, as far as draft value wise, uh, where he went in the draft.
02:56So you've already, I think kind of gained a lot by where you drafted him to not pay him.
03:02I think sets a bad precedent for everyone else after that. And everyone is watching how they handle
03:07this contract for their own contracts. Right. And so he's got, he's got the same agent as
03:13Witherspoon from Seattle who graded higher on PFF or whatever that's worth. Do you think that
03:18like, will they get the same contract or how does that even go? Uh, they'll, they'll use that as a
03:22comp for sure. Um, you'll definitely, but I'm just, the only thing with, with Giardi, it's like,
03:26man, I can't. So I looked up Will Anderson's extension. Um, he got guaranteed total dollars,
03:32130 guaranteed total dollars. And then you compare that to what, um, uh,
03:37the Trent McDuffie got, who's the highest paid defensive back for the Rams. Now he got a hundred
03:42million guaranteed. So it's going to be between a hundred and 134 million guaranteed. Uh, what he's
03:49looking for. If the Patriots don't play it. Okay. You just, you basically are setting the tone and
03:55standard for future contracts for players. All right. So if you're his agent and you guys and Ted,
04:01you know, the market right now and you kind of, and you know exactly what teams need, what I'm trying
04:06to figure out, is that a dumb move for him to try to push for being the hot, like one
04:12of the,
04:12like one of the, like an edge rusher and not like a defensive back. I do. I think it would
04:17be a little
04:18bit. I think it's a little bit, uh, risky to push too hard for that to, to, to say, Hey,
04:24I want,
04:24you know, uh, you know, uh, well, will Anderson money. Yeah. Because they play a zone. They play
04:31a lot of zone. Yeah. The, the, the shut, shut down corner. Isn't, uh, the, as premier of a
04:36position as it used to be, it's more of the edge rusher is now the premier position on defense. So
04:41I think you, I think you could push it a little bit too far and, and maybe Mrs. Mrs. Mark.
04:47I'm sorry. Well, get your opinion. Do you think that they should pay him if he indeed pushes for that
04:53kind of money? I mean, I think so. They have 42 million in cap space. They seem to have plenty
04:58of room to sign him this year and drink next year. However, we know how they work. And if
05:03they're going to give up a first to get AJ Brown, it almost feels like, and what do you value
05:07more
05:08an elite receiver and AJ Brown or an elite corner in Gonzalez? And they're so bad at drafting receivers
05:13for this team. It would be hard not to say you need to get a proven receiver on the market.
05:19You can find a corner in the draft that be to be comparable next year. When you get
05:23a couple of first round picks back. God, I'm just, I'm feeling all this. Like I can't,
05:27it's hard to disagree. It is. And it's so weird too, because I know we talked about this looming
05:31contract that Drake may, you know, we'll be having. And I just, I can't, I just keep imagining
05:38Robert Kraft sitting him down and saying, you know, Tom Brady, he always took less for the better of the
05:44team. And if you take a little bit of a discount, I promise we'll put a great team around you.
05:49I mean,
05:50the greatest of all time did it. Heck, you might have a statue up here one day. I can just
05:55see it.
05:55Those days are done.
05:56Let's go play golf. A little private trip in Florida.
05:59Ted Johnson did this once and boy, it worked out well.
06:01It worked on me, man. I can't.
06:03That's a great story. That's my favorite story.
06:04Do you like that story? Oh, I got stories for days.
06:06Let's just hang in there. We got a lot more.
06:09But that is fascinating, because that's how they still think, though, Ray.
06:13I know, I know. It's the Patriots. And that's why it's so wild that you're going to have these
06:18three positions that you're going to be spending a ton of money on.
06:21And the thing that's different is that the head coach does not align with the owner on this.
06:27Belichick and Kraft were same page when it came to paying players.
06:31Bill was happy to not pay players, because that means he got more money.
06:35Mike Vrabel is different. He wants guys to get paid.
06:38But did he lose leverage with this whole thing? And Elliott Wolfe is still there.
06:42That's kind of Robert's guy, right? He's making the calls. He's there for day three of the draft.
06:46I think he lost a little bit. And you know what's interesting?
06:49Kraft is going to always remember, do you know where Bill got all his power?
06:52And it was like that. It was in 01.
06:55He literally went from winning five games in 2000.
06:57We won the Super Bowl in 2001. And people go, well, when did Bill get his power?
07:02The day after we won the Super Bowl in 2001, Bill had all the power.
07:06Wow. And Kraft is, you know, is going to remember that.
07:09He's not going to want to totally give Mike the power like he gave to Bill.
07:13Oh, man.
07:13413 texter. Gonzo will be a bust after signing that new big deal.
07:17Do you think there's a chance that are they worried about that?
07:19Like you give him all this money and he's just going to stop being elite.
07:22Who was it? Who was it? Jackson. Who was the JC Jackson?
07:24They were worried about paying because of that same reason.
07:27I don't I haven't heard that about Christian Gonzalez.
07:30I mean, he feels like a pro's pro.
07:31Yeah, I haven't seen any indication that he's not going to like be he's going to be the guy that
07:36gets fat and happy.
07:37Yeah, he gets the contract and then just stops trying Albert Hainsworth.
07:40Oh, gosh. He does not seem like an Albert Hainsworth or a JC Jackson.
07:45By the way, those old Albert Hainsworth videos are the greatest thing.
07:48Like the ones where he would just fall over and just lie down.
07:51He was like SGA before the flop.
07:54If I if I if I'm Christian Gonzalez agent, there's a lot of data and analytics that show the impact
08:00that he has when he's in there as starting and in the lineup versus when he's not.
08:04It's a different defense when he's in there.
08:05So he's worth the money that I think he's he's owed.
