00:16Lamentations, Chapter 1
00:20How doth the city sit solitary that was full of people?
00:24How was she become as a widow?
00:26She that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how was she become tributary?
00:33She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks.
00:37Among all her lovers, she hath none to comfort her.
00:41All her friends hath dealt treacherously with her.
00:44They are become her enemies.
00:46Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude.
00:52She dwelleth among the heathen.
00:54She findeth no rest.
00:56All her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
01:00The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts.
01:06All her gates are desolate.
01:08Her priests sigh.
01:10Her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
01:14Her adversaries are the chief.
01:16Her enemies prosper.
01:17For the Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions.
01:22Her children are gone into captivity before the enemy, and from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed.
01:30Her princess are become like hearts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
01:38Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction, and of her miseries, all her pleasant things that she had in
01:45the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her.
01:50The adversary saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.
01:54Jerusalem hath grievously sinned, therefore she is removed.
01:59All that honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness.
02:05Yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward.
02:08Her filthiness is in her skirts.
02:11She remembereth not her last end.
02:13Therefore she came down wonderfully.
02:15She hath no comforter.
02:17O Lord, behold my affliction, for the enemy hath magnified himself.
02:23The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things.
02:28For she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command, that they should not enter
02:36into thy congregation.
02:38All her people sigh.
02:39They seek bread.
02:41They have given their pleasant things for meat, to relieve the soul.
02:45See, O Lord, and consider, for I am become vile.
02:49Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?
02:53Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord
03:00hath afflicted me, in the day of his fierce anger.
03:03From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them.
03:09He hath spread a net for my feet.
03:11He hath turned me back.
03:12He hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
03:16The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand.
03:20They are wreathed and come up upon my neck.
03:23He hath made my strength to fall.
03:25The Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
03:31The Lord hath trodden underfoot all my mighty men in the midst of me.
03:36He hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men.
03:41The Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
03:47For these things I weep, mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my
03:59soul is far from me.
04:02My children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
04:06Zion spread it forth for her hands, and there is none to comfort her.
04:11The Lord hath commanded concerning Jacob that his adversaries should be round about him.
04:17Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.
04:22The Lord is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment.
04:26Here, I pray you all, people, and behold my sorrow.
04:31My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
04:36I called for my lovers, but they deceived me.
04:40My priests and my elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their
04:46souls.
04:48Behold, O Lord, for I am in distress.
04:51My bowels are troubled.
04:53Mine heart is turned within me, for I have grievously rebelled.
04:58Abroad the sword bereaveth.
05:00At home there is as death.
05:03They have heard that I sigh.
05:05There is none to comfort me.
05:08All my enemies have heard of my trouble.
05:11They are glad that thou hast done it.
05:13Thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
05:18Let all their wickedness come before thee, and do unto them as thou hast done unto me for all my
05:25transgressions.
05:26For my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
05:37Lamentations
05:37Chapter 2
05:39How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven
05:45unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool and the day of his anger?
05:52The Lord hath swaddled up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied.
05:57He hath thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah.
06:02He hath brought them down to the ground.
06:04He hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
06:08He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel.
06:11He hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire,
06:18which devoureth round about.
06:20He hath bent his bow like an enemy.
06:23He stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the
06:28tabernacle of the daughter of Zion.
06:30He poured out his fury like fire.
06:34The Lord was as an enemy.
06:37He hath swallowed up Israel.
06:38He hath swallowed up all her palaces.
06:41He hath destroyed his strongholds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah, mourning and lamentation.
06:48And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden.
06:53He hath destroyed his places of the assembly.
06:57The Lord hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation
07:05of his anger the king and the priest.
07:08The Lord hath cast off his altar.
07:11He hath abhorred his sanctuary.
07:13He hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces.
07:18They hath made a noise in the house of the Lord, as in the day of a solemn feast.
07:23The Lord hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion.
07:26He hath stretched out a line.
07:28He hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying.
07:31Therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament.
07:34They languished together.
07:37Her gates are sunk into the ground.
07:40He hath destroyed and broken her bars.
07:43Her king and her princes are among the Gentiles.
07:46The law is no more.
07:49Her prophets also find no vision from the Lord.
07:54The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence.
08:00They have cast up dust upon their heads.
08:02They have girded themselves with sackcloth.
08:06The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.
08:11Mine eyes do fail with tears.
08:15My bowels are troubled.
08:18My liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
08:24Because the children and the sucklings swone in the streets of the city.
08:29They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine?
08:34When they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city.
08:37When their soul was poured out into their mother's bosom.
08:41What thing shall I take to witness for thee?
08:45What thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem?
08:49What shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion?
08:55For thy breach is great, like the sea.
08:59Who can heal thee?
09:01Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee.
09:06And they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity.
09:11But have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.
09:15All that pass by clap their hands at thee.
09:18They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying,
09:23Is this the city that men call the perfection of beauty?
09:27The joy of the whole earth?
09:29All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee.
09:33They hiss and gnash the teeth.
09:35They say, We have swallowed her up.
09:38Certainly this is the day that we looked for.
09:41We have found.
09:42We have seen it.
09:44The Lord hath done that which he hath devised.
09:48He hath fulfilled his word, that he hath commanded in the days of old.
09:53He hath thrown down, and hath not pitied.
09:56And he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee.
10:00He hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.
10:03Their heart cried unto the Lord,
10:05O wall of the daughter of Zion,
10:08Let tears run down like a river day and night.
10:12Give thyself no rest.
10:14Let not the apple of thine eye cease.
10:19Arise, cry out in the night.
10:21In the beginning of the watches,
10:23Pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord.
10:27Lift up thy hands toward him,
10:29For the life of thy young children,
10:31That faint for hunger,
10:33In the top of every street.
10:35Behold, O Lord,
10:37And consider to whom thou hast done this.
10:41Shall the women eat their fruit,
10:44And children of a span long?
10:47Shall the priest and the prophet be slain,
10:50In the sanctuary of the Lord?
10:52The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets.
10:56My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword.
11:00Thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger.
11:03Thou hast killed and not pitied.
11:06Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about,
11:11So that in the day of the Lord's anger none escaped nor remained.
11:16Those that I have swaddled and brought up
11:18Hath mine enemy consumed.
11:28Lamentations
11:29Chapter 3
11:30I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
11:35He hath led me and brought me into darkness,
11:38But not into light.
11:40Surely against me is he turned.
11:42He turneth his hand against me all the day.
11:45My flesh and my skin hath he made old.
11:47He hath broken my bones.
11:49He hath built it against me,
11:51Encompassed me with gall and travail.
11:54He hath set me in dark places,
11:57As they that be dead of old.
11:59He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out.
12:02He hath made my chain heavy.
12:04Also when I cry and shout,
12:06He shutteth out my prayer.
12:08He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone.
12:11He hath made my paths crooked.
12:14He was unto me as a bear lying in wait,
12:17And as a lion in secret places.
12:20He hath turned aside my ways and pulled me in pieces.
12:24He hath made me desolate.
12:27He hath bent his bow and set me as a mark for the arrow.
12:32He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
12:35I was a derision to all my people and their song all the day.
12:40He hath filled me with bitterness.
12:43He hath made me drunken with wormwood.
12:46He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones.
12:49He hath covered me with ashes.
12:51And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace.
12:56I forget prosperity.
12:59And I said,
13:00My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord,
13:04Remembering mine affliction and my misery,
13:07The wormwood and the gall.
13:10My soul hath them still in remembrance,
13:13And is humbled in me.
13:15This I recall to my mind.
13:17Therefore have I hope.
13:19It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed,
13:23Because his compassions fail not.
13:26They are new every morning.
13:29Great is thy faithfulness.
13:31The Lord is my portion, saith my soul.
13:35Therefore will I hope in him.
13:37The Lord is good unto them that wait for him,
13:41To the soul that seeketh him.
13:44It is good that a man should both hope
13:47And quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
13:51It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
13:55He sitteth alone and keepeth silence,
13:58Because he hath borne it upon him.
14:01He putteth his mouth in the dust,
14:03If so be there may be hope.
14:04He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him.
14:08He is filled full with reproach.
14:12For the Lord will not cast off forever,
14:16But though he cause grief,
14:18Yet will he have compassion,
14:20According to the multitude of his mercies.
14:23For he doth not afflict willingly,
14:25Nor grieve the children of men.
14:27To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
14:31To turn aside the right of a man
14:33Before the face of the Most High,
14:34To subvert a man and his cause,
14:37The Lord approveth not.
14:39Who is he that saith,
14:41And it cometh to pass,
14:42When the Lord commandeth it not?
14:45Out of the mouth of the Most High
14:47Proceedeth not evil and good?
14:50Wherefore doth a living man complain,
14:52A man for the punishment of his sins?
14:54Let us search and try our ways,
14:57And turn again to the Lord.
14:59Let us lift up our heart with our hands
15:01Unto God in the heavens.
15:03We have transgressed and have rebelled.
15:07Thou hast not pardoned.
15:09Thou hast covered with anger and persecuted us.
15:13Thou hast slain.
15:14Thou hast not pitied.
15:16Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud
15:18That our prayer should not pass through.
15:22Thou hast made us as the off-scouring and refuse
15:25In the midst of the people.
15:27All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
15:31Fear and a snare has come upon us.
15:34Desolation and destruction.
15:36Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water
15:39For the destruction of the daughter of my people.
15:42Mine eye trickleth down,
15:44And ceaseth not,
15:46Without any intermission.
15:48Till the Lord look down,
15:50And behold,
15:52From heaven.
15:53Mine eye affecteth mine heart,
15:55Because of all the daughters of my city.
15:58Mine enemies chased me sore,
16:01Like a bird,
16:02Without cause.
16:04They have cut off my life in the dungeon,
16:07And cast a stone upon me.
16:09Waters float over mine head.
16:12Then I said,
16:14I am cut off.
16:16I called upon thy name, O Lord,
16:19Out of the low dungeon.
16:21Thou hast heard my voice.
16:23Hide not thine ear at my breathing,
16:26At my cry.
16:28Thou drewest near,
16:30In the day that I called upon thee.
16:33Thou sayest,
16:35Fear not.
16:38O Lord,
16:40Thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul.
16:43Thou hast redeemed my life.
16:46O Lord,
16:47Thou hast seen my wrong.
16:50Judge Thou my cause.
16:52Thou hast seen all their vengeance,
16:55And all their imaginations against me.
16:57Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord,
16:59And all their imaginations against me.
17:02The lips of those that rose up against me,
17:04And are the vice against me all the day.
17:07Behold,
17:08Their sitting down,
17:09And their rising up,
17:11I and their music.
17:13Render unto them a recompense, O Lord,
17:17According to the work of their hands.
17:19Give them sorrow of heart.
17:22Thy curse unto them.
17:24Persecute and destroy them in anger,
17:27From under the heavens of the Lord.
17:35Lamentations,
17:36Chapter 4,
17:37How has the gold become dim?
17:40How has the most fine gold changed?
17:42The stones of the sanctuary are poured out,
17:45In the top of every street.
17:47The precious sons of Zion,
17:50Comparable to fine gold.
17:52How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers?
17:55The work of the hands of the potter.
17:57Even the sea monsters draw out the breast.
18:00They give suck to the young ones.
18:03The daughter of my people is become cruel,
18:07Like the ostriches in the wilderness.
18:10The tongue of the sucking child
18:12Cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst.
18:15The young children ask bread,
18:17And no man breaketh it unto them.
18:20They that did feed delicately
18:22Are desolate in the streets.
18:25They that were brought up in scarlet
18:27Embrace dunghills.
18:30For the punishment of the iniquity
18:32Of the daughter of my people
18:34Is greater than the punishment
18:35Of the sin of Sodom
18:37That was overthrown as in a moment.
18:39And no hand stayed on her.
18:42Her Nazarites were purer than snow.
18:45They were whiter than milk.
18:46They were more ruddy in body than rubies.
18:49Their polishing was of sapphire.
18:52Their visage is blacker than a coal.
18:55They are not known in the streets.
18:57Their skin cleaveth to their bones.
19:00It is withered.
19:00It is become like a stick.
19:02They that be slain with the sword
19:05Are better than they
19:06That be slain with hunger.
19:08For these pine away,
19:10Stricken through for want
19:12Of the fruits of the field.
19:13The hands of the pitiful women
19:15Have soddened their own children.
19:17They were their meat
19:19And the destruction of the daughter
19:21Of my people.
19:23The Lord hath accomplished his fury.
19:26He hath poured out his fierce anger.
19:28And hath kindled a fire in Zion.
19:31And it hath devoured the foundations thereof.
19:34The kings of the earth
19:35And all the inhabitants of the world
19:37Would not have believed
19:38That the adversary and the enemy
19:40Should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
19:42For the sins of her prophets
19:45And the iniquities of her priests
19:47That have shed the blood of the just
19:50In the midst of her.
19:51They have wandered as blind men in the streets.
19:54They have polluted themselves with blood
19:56So that men could not touch their garments.
19:59They cried unto them,
20:01Depart ye, it is unclean.
20:04Depart, depart, touch not.
20:06When they fled away and wandered
20:08They said among the heathen,
20:09They shall no more sojourn there.
20:12The anger of the Lord hath divided them.
20:15He will no more regard them.
20:17They respected not the persons of the priests.
20:20They favored not the elders.
20:23As for us,
20:24Our eyes as yet failed for our vain help.
20:28In our watching we have watched for a nation
20:31That could not save us.
20:33They hunt our steps
20:34That we cannot go in our streets.
20:37Our end is near.
20:38Our days are fulfilled.
20:40For our end is come.
20:44Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven.
20:47They pursued us upon the mountains.
20:50They laid wait for us in the wilderness.
20:53The breath of our nostrils,
20:55The anointed of the Lord,
20:57Was taken in their pits.
20:59Of whom we said,
21:00Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen.
21:04Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
21:06That dwellest in the land of Uz.
21:09The cup also shall pass through unto thee.
21:12Thou shalt be drunken,
21:13And shalt make thyself naked.
21:16The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished.
21:19O daughter of Zion,
21:21He will no more carry thee away into captivity.
21:24He will visit thine iniquity.
21:27O daughter of Edom,
21:29He will discover thy sins.
21:38Lamentations,
21:39Chapter 5
21:40Remember, O Lord,
21:42What has come upon us.
21:44Consider,
21:45And behold our reproach.
21:48Our inheritance is turned
21:49To strangers,
21:51Our houses to aliens.
21:53We are orphans and fatherless.
21:56Our mothers are as widows.
21:58We have drunken our water for money.
22:01Our wood is sold unto us.
22:04Our necks are under persecution.
22:07We labor and have no rest.
22:09We have given the hand to the Egyptians
22:11And to the Assyrians,
22:14To be satisfied with bread.
22:16Our fathers have sinned,
22:18And are not.
22:20And we have borne their iniquities.
22:23Servants have ruled over us.
22:25There is none that doth deliver us
22:27Out of their hand.
22:28We got our bread with the peril of our lives
22:31Because of the sword of the wilderness.
22:34Our skin was black like an oven
22:36Because of the terrible famine.
22:38They ravished the women in Zion,
22:41And the maids in the cities of Judah.
22:44Princes are hanged up by their hand.
22:47The faces of elders were not honored.
22:51They took the young men to grind,
22:54And the children fell under the wood.
22:57The elders have ceased from the gate.
23:01The young men from their music.
23:03The joy of our heart is ceased.
23:07Our dance is turned into mourning.
23:11The crown is fallen from our head.
23:14Woe unto us that we have sinned.
23:18For this our heart is faint.
23:21For these things our eyes are dimmed.
23:25Because of the mountain of Zion,
23:28Which is desolate,
23:29The foxes walk upon it.
23:32Thou, O Lord,
23:34Remainest forever.
23:35Thy throne,
23:37From generation to generation.
23:41Wherefore dost thou forget us forever,
23:44And forsake us so long time?

23:58But thou hast utterly rejected us.
24:03Thou art very wroth against us.
