00:00Let's start off with a video to sort of give you a little prelude here.
00:03Mets rookie Morabito on getting the number eight jersey for his debut.
00:07Roll the clip.
00:08I think you probably heard something about your number eight.
00:13What do you think your new number is going to be tomorrow?
00:16Oh, look at me.
00:17I think 55.
00:18Okay.
00:19Yeah.
00:21What way?
00:21Did you get to choose that number?
00:23I chose 55, yeah.
00:25I was just given eight.
00:28Have you even heard of Gary Carter?
00:31Yeah.
00:32Yeah.
00:33Hall of Famer legend here.
00:35Yeah.
00:36He was wearing, he wore number eight.
00:3855, have any meaning for you?
00:42Two fives is cool.
00:46All right.
00:47So we're upset at this point as Mets fans because Gary Carter's jersey was given out to a player coming
00:54up here for Major League Baseball.
00:56Understand this, 75% of the fan base for those New York Mets probably has no idea who Gary Carter
01:01is.
01:02And you would say to yourself like, oh, well, it's easy.
01:04You show up to the ball game and you look out in the outfield and there's the retired numbers there.
01:10Where's Gary's at?
01:12Who?
01:13Gary Carter's number's retired, right?
01:15No, it's not retired.
01:17So it's not retired.
01:19They gave it to another player.
01:21People are upset because it's been frozen for 20 years, but it's not retired.
01:28So you can't wear it.
01:30But if you do wear it, we're going to be upset.
01:32Joe, help me out, please, here.
01:36I have no idea.
01:37Are Expos fans upset, too?
01:39Because really, he was in Expo for a long time before he was a Met.
01:44Although, to be fair, that was the last time the Mets were actually any good and, you know, viable.
01:49But at the same time, it seems like why did it take so long to figure this out, Donnie?
01:56If it was such an issue, why did it take so long now to realize, hey, that dude's wearing Gary
02:02Carter's number, but nobody's worn it.
02:05Isn't that number supposed to be?
02:06It took them a little while in the Mets organization to figure this one out, didn't it?
02:11Well, number one, number one, it's a stupid idea that we come up with.
02:15Again, retiring jerseys.
02:16Once again, operating teams that you don't expect to be around for the next 200 years.
02:21So you retire every number, one through 100, and you move forward.
02:25That's where I get upset with it also.
02:26Like, just put a patch on the jersey and say, Derek Jeter's number two is retired.
02:30Hey, you know what?
02:31I'm coming up for the Yankees.
02:32I would love to wear two.
02:33Jeter was my favorite player growing up, and you'll wear that number two in respect for Derek Jeter with the
02:37patch on the arm that said Derek Jeter used to wear this uniform.
02:40But here is where I draw the line once again.
02:42If that number, Joe, was so important to the New York Mets and their fan base and their franchise, why
02:49wasn't it just retired?
02:50Then you wouldn't have this controversy.
02:53It's frozen.
02:54Give me a break.
02:55Like, retire the jersey or don't retire the jersey.
02:58And I almost believe, like, this kid coming up and we're a Beto.
03:00Hey, what'd you feel about when you got number eight?
03:02I don't know.
03:03Looks like a cool number.
03:04Oh, we had to remind you.
03:05It's Gary Carter's job.
03:06Oh, oh, oh.
03:07Oh, who's Gary Carter again?
03:09Give me a quick fill-in.
03:10Oh, oh, he played for the Mets.
03:11Okay.
03:11Yes, okay.
03:12When I go meet the press, I'll let you know about it.
03:14Retire the number or don't retire the number.
03:16It's that simple, people.
03:18The Mets making errors on the field and off the field.
03:20And as a Phillies fan, absolutely love to see it here.
