00:00The one thing I never thought was going to happen, Tom, over the past couple years,
00:03it seems like Pete Alonzo is just made to be a Met.
00:06Franchise guy will always be there, like a David Wright, right?
00:09And now you take a look and say, well, how did they treat Pete Alonzo last year?
00:12It's like, man, he came down to like the wire.
00:14Nobody's really giving good offers.
00:15He sort of came back to the Mets because that was like the only contract he could take.
00:18And now you find themselves without Pete Alonzo altogether.
00:20Why?
00:21He signed with the Baltimore Orioles, Tom.
00:23Five years, 155.
00:25Goes to a good hitting ballpark.
00:27I never thought the Mets would let go Pete Alonzo.
00:30And they did.
00:31I was shocked to see this.
00:33Frankly, I was shocked.
00:35And something about it doesn't add up to me.
00:39When you have Steve Cohen, the owner, who has a mentality or I'm going to say a perceived mentality
00:46that he wants to be the big spender, that he wants to push all chips to the middle.
00:51You know, if Pete Alonzo's agent goes to Steve Cohen and says,
00:55this is the offer that we have from X team.
00:57You know, to me, the Steve Cohen mentality should be, okay, let's just slap 15 million on that.
01:02He's getting five and 155.
01:04Let's just slap 15 million on it.
01:06We'll give you five.
01:07We'll bump it up.
01:08Oh, we'll bump it up another 10 million.
01:09We'll give you five, 175.
01:11Whatever it is.
01:11That should be the Steve Cohen mentality that we're just going to keep adding on to retain
01:15the guys that we want.
01:16But that's not the case.
01:17That hasn't been the case.
01:19They haven't been willing to get the highest priced free agents.
01:22And they're also losing talent with not having Pete Alonzo.
01:26No, you're right.
01:26And it's one of those where like Pete Alonzo, like it's hard to get power bats in Major League
01:31Baseball.
01:32It is.
01:32And a homegrown one.
01:33When you're supposed to have unlimited funds, I didn't think it would get to this point.
01:36But you thought it was kind of interesting, as I pointed out, where the negotiations over
01:39the past couple of years were like, oh, we're going to get this done.
01:41We're going to pay him a lot of money.
01:41It was like, let's try to nickel and dime this guy.
01:43And eventually he goes and leaves for the Baltimore Orioles.
01:45But the Mets did make some moves, Tom, to help out their team, which included not a free agent move.
01:50But how about a trade Marcus Simeon for Brandon Nimmo here?
01:53That was an interesting one that went down.
01:55Simeon brings a little bit more power.
01:56Nimmo out and heads to Texas.
01:58I actually like this move for both of these ball plugs with Simeon now in the Big Apple.
02:02Yeah, I would agree that this is a good move for both teams.
02:05Obviously, Simeon is getting up there in age.
02:07But, you know, looking at some of his numbers from last year, you know, we certainly struggle.
02:12The power isn't what it once was.
02:14But where he slots into the lineup, I think, will be the most interesting thing because Lindor, Soto, we know
02:21what they can bring.
02:22They also will get to another one of the trades that the Mets made.
02:26But also the signing that we're about to talk about, I think Simeon will be in a good spot in
02:30the lineup.
02:31And I think he won't be asked to do too much.
02:33And I think that will benefit him.
