00:20through and it rocked you so hard that it snapped hey buddy relax relax relax the boats were going
00:28like this my sliding glass doors were opening and closing my cabinets were opening closing
00:32so i can smell the odor of alcohol yeah if this man is operating under the influence he will be
00:37going to jail nevada a land of extremes from the strip to the summits it's wild country home to
00:49more than 900 species and a way of life worth protecting preserved for the people and the
00:56wildlife they call it home one team stands guard this is nevada wild
01:24my name is james mortimer i'm a game warden with the nevada department of wildlife i'm in the
01:29western region here in washoe county within that is reno and sparks about 400 000 population and
01:37above i was born and raised here in the reno area it's where i was fishing and hunting for most
01:43of
01:43my life so it's fun to be able to be in areas that i know a lot of those outdoorsmen
01:48are recreating
01:49i'm heading up to lake tahoe and we'll be patrolling by boat we're going to meet up with
01:55game warden britney rider and look for any reckless operators operating under the influence
02:01or any other violations regarding watercraft or vessels britney rider patrols lake tahoe
02:07specifically and then assist any other wardens with patrol during hunting season
02:22brady how are we now good all right well let's get after it then
02:27any big troubles with the uh paddleboarders at all so there's some paddleboarders over at the point
02:32that the lifeguards see without a life jacket and some of them might be kids okay
02:55he's not even noticing us he's just paying attention to his phone
02:59hello state game warden how you doing hey the reason i'm coming up is i don't see a life jacket
03:04on board is that an inflatable life jacket or no no okay so nevada law says you need to have
03:09a
03:09life jacket on board it doesn't need to be warm but it needs to be on the board okay you
03:13know how far
03:14out from the shore you are here probably about a quarter mile half mile right uh do me a favor
03:18just
03:18come up to my boat for me okay thank you where are you from ukraine yeah okay you're here on
03:28uh
03:28work visa or something like that yeah i understand coming from ukraine you might not know all our
03:33laws and violations and everything like that you need to have a live jacket on board okay
03:37right jack so you don't need to wear it but it needs to be on board okay uh-huh
03:42we have a lot of issues out here with people they think that they can swim to shore but when
03:46it's in
03:46cold water like this their muscles start to lock up they can't swim as good and they drown it happens
03:51more than you think now that you're on our boat do me a favor throw that on for me thank
03:56you so
03:57nice yeah what's your first name make hello it's a work visa after war started in ukraine okay me and
04:06my son yeah comes to america okay have a work yeah it is difficult to learn the laws and regulations
04:14when you move from ukraine i'll use it as an educational opportunity um and tell them about the laws here
04:19in
04:19state of nevada if you're going to come back you have to get a live jacket okay thank you okay
04:23i'm
04:24understanding okay thank you very much best of luck to work and everything like that huh thank you yeah
04:29have a good day yeah you as well 23
04:49stay game warden how are we doing good the reason for the stop is you don't have an observer on
04:53board
04:53okay um so while you're towing any two behind you you need to have an observer on board which means
04:59you're operating paying full attention to what you're doing while driving and then you have to
05:03have another person on board watching the kids and having a flag ready okay can you just get the kids
05:08on board for me real quick uh do you have that registration available in the house do you have a
05:21driver's license here in nevada yeah how long you been on the water like eight in the morning okay
05:26without looking at your watch do you know what time it is right now yeah no without looking at
05:30your watch three o'clock three o'clock i'm not drinking i don't drink okay okay well the reason
05:34why i'm asking is that there's yeah that was for the other empty beer cans and everything like
05:38that okay so i can smell the odor alcohol my name is victor jordan i'm a game warden with the
05:54nevada
05:54department of wildlife based out of las vegas i was born here i do have a family member who works
06:00for the department my sister britney works out of reno area and patrols out on lake tahoe
06:07i got the job a few years later she asked me about it was very intrigued by it and says
06:12hey
06:12i think that's something that i'd like to do i said well come on let's go let's do it and
06:16uh she
06:17tested for us and nobody ever knew that she was my sister and she got the job on her own
06:22and when
06:23everybody found out that she was my sister they were all kind of upset with us that we never told
06:27them today i'm going to be going to a local meat processor basically we have one professional meat
06:34processor in all of las vegas so anytime anyone in the las vegas area harvests an animal and they
06:40want it professionally processed they bring it to this local processor we'll kind of go over there
06:45and make sure that everybody's animals are tagged and punched correctly
06:54how's it going guys good just gonna be checking some tags in here you got many carcasses in uh yeah
07:00we got probably about 20 yesterday yeah and maybe four already today yeah and eight on saturday yeah
07:07yeah right on yeah good good cool thanks man so here i'm checking tags see if it's punched make
07:17sure that the dates kind of correspond this guy here harvested on august 21st he clearly notched it out
07:24he wrote in the unit 222 and sometimes we'll just look at the carcass and make sure that they brought
07:30in a proper amount of meat for that animal if you're only seeing two quarters or a small bag kind
07:36of
07:36wonder where the rest of the meat went so here you can see on this tag he's got a antelope
07:42horns longer
07:43and what did he do he circled the month he circled the date he circled that it was a male
07:49so this is
07:49a violation in the instructions it says immediately upon reaching the harvested animal number one clearly
07:56notched the month and day of kill marking the blocks with a pencil is not acceptable and not as bold
08:04so he used a pen pencil here it clearly says it right on the tag so that's a violation sometimes
08:10if they use pen and they do it light you can just rub the tag a few times with your
08:14thumb and rub off
08:15the date hopefully when they get the meat back from the processor they look at their tag they look at
08:20it
08:20and say hey i can rub that off i'm gonna go harvest another animal this guy did it pretty bold
08:25but at some
08:27point and he didn't follow the laws of the state of nevada we pay him a visit and find out
08:32what he was
08:33thinking now the whole reason why we check tags make sure that people are obeying by the law your
08:38resource would be diminished immediately so here's one that we really hate to see this is a mule deer
08:44that's not punched and i'm not seeing even a slice the problem is this is a junior so it looks
08:50like it was
08:51a girl who shot it i'm sure with her dad and uh she didn't punch it so whoever's taking her
08:57and
08:58and teaching her how to hunt is not teaching her the proper method so we always hate to deal with
09:05crimes with minors but they need to be shown the right way and we want to keep the next generation
09:10continuing to hunt and when you have a minor who committed a crime sometimes it's not fun to deal with
09:17that i just gotta take some notes real quick and find out who they are and go pay him a
09:21visit
09:27so i can smell the odor of alcohol yeah um i don't know if it's coming from the empty cans
09:31or not
09:32okay um would you be willing to um submit to testing okay if you can keep your life jacket on
09:37board and then just come up to the front of my boat right here i can smell the odor of
09:42alcohol
09:42um coming from the vessel um and possibly the operator and this could be very dangerous he's
09:48got three children on board with no operator and it could be very easy that one of these kids go
09:52overboard and he's not attentive enough to know that they've fallen overboard so when's the last time you
09:57had a drink i have maybe a couple sips one beer like in the morning okay so like i said
10:04um i can smell
10:05the odor of alcohol coming out of the boat um if it's just the um empty beer cans that's messing
10:09me up
10:10um i'll be able to just tell tell with this one test it's just a horizontal gaze nystagmus so follow
10:15the stimulus which is the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only keep your head still
10:18okay
10:28this isn't something that we can use officer discretion if this man is operating under the
10:32influence and is above the legal limit um there is no discretion here he will be going to jail today
10:49if this man is operating under the influence and is above the legal limit
10:53you will be going to jail today all right just keep following the stimulus with your eyes okay
11:05all right you can relax man if you had alcohol above the legal limit usually what your eyes are
11:09do are going to do is going to bounce okay i'm not seeing anything like that in your eyes today
11:13um i'm
11:14not going to continue forward with the operating under the influence investigation you're all good
11:17to go what i am going to do i am going to issue you a citation today um for um
11:21not having an operator
11:22on board um while you're towing a vessel okay just give us a second so if you jump back on
11:27the vessel
11:27you're good to go i'll be issuing a citation for operating without an observer the fine does carry
11:34195 dollars and it is a misdemeanor violation here in the state of nevada i do need a signature from
11:39you it's not a mission of guilt just saying that you'll take care of it i do have to warn
11:43you fail to
11:44take care of it we'll go to warrant all right you have any questions for us okay thank you for
11:49staying sober and uh making sure everybody can operate out here okay enjoy your summer i'll see
11:54you later guys i'm glad he's operating safe and he's out here but he just needs to make sure he's
12:02got some sort of observer behind him hopefully he's learned his lesson yeah
12:13so just leaving the meat processor and found a tag not properly punched so we're going to go over and
12:19investigate find out his story and determine whether it needs to be a citation
12:40okay
12:40hey how are you hey how are you available that's you hey i'm victor jordan game warden nevada
12:47department of wildlife no i'm good right here yeah so uh here to ask you a few questions about your
12:52hunt okay so uh how did it go went good 25 i have a successful first thing saturday morning
12:59worry about the heat got to the side by side put the tag on it took it all the way
13:02back to camp got
13:04in the shade and got a quarter of it.
13:06The reason why I'm here is because I've
13:08looked at your history.
13:09You've been hunting for a while.
13:11And you're expected to know what to do with the tag, right?
13:14Supposed to punch the tag?
13:15Well, I did.
13:16I squared out 22.
13:17I wrote in 251.
13:19Yeah.
13:19And I wrote August.
13:21Did you read what the tag said?
13:22No.
13:23It's right on the tag about notching it.
13:25Clearly notch it.
13:26With a knife?
13:27Yeah.
13:28Oh, I thought it was, see, even my buddy,
13:30who he's been hunting along with me, it was, we, he even
13:33said it when I squirted out with a pen.
13:35Yeah.
13:35That if you didn't have a pen, then you were supposed
13:37to notch it.
13:38But I squirted it.
13:39No, it doesn't say that.
13:39It says to clearly notch it.
13:41And it says, do not use a pen.
13:43And it's bolded.
13:43Do not.
13:44OK.
13:45So that's why I'm here.
13:45OK.
13:46OK.
13:47So it looks like you did everything else right.
13:49OK.
13:50And the reason why we have an issue with that
13:52is because you took it to malls.
13:54You get it processed.
13:55You get all your meat back.
13:56You get your tag.
13:57You wipe off the ink.
13:59And you're back up and hunting again for another antelope.
14:02I understand that, yeah.
14:04It's an education, but also, unfortunately,
14:06it comes with a citation.
14:07OK.
14:08So, all right.
14:08Do you have your ID on you?
14:09Yep, and you're ready.
14:10OK, thanks.
14:11The tag does specifically state that you shall not use ink
14:15or pencil.
14:16And clearly, he has.
14:18So it is a violation.
14:19He will be receiving a citation today.
14:21This is your ID bag.
14:22OK.
14:23OK, total bail amount 195.
14:24Additionally to the fine, there is a six demerit.
14:27Do you know about the demerit system?
14:28No, sir.
14:28If you get 12 within five years, you could have your hunting
14:32and fishing privileges revoked.
14:33No.
14:34OK?
14:34You're at six.
14:35OK?
14:36For that.
14:37Yep.
14:37Up with it.
14:38Yep.
14:38That's great.
14:39Until you gave me those examples,
14:40I never even thought about any of that.
14:43Yeah.
14:43I didn't do any of that.
14:44And most sportsmen don't.
14:45But it's the ones that do think about those kind of things
14:48and do do those things that ruin it for everybody else.
14:51And therefore, we have to put those laws in place.
14:54What I need from you is a signature on the bottom.
14:56It's just saying that you will take care of it.
14:59All right.
14:59Thanks.
15:00You as well.
15:02So although this individual was a bit agitated,
15:05I feel that just a simple education is not enough.
15:08And a citation would be a little more prudent.
15:26My name is Aliyah Lair.
15:28I'm a game warden for the Department of Wildlife
15:30in the state of Nevada.
15:31And I patrol southern Nevada, which encompasses
15:34a lot of Clark County.
15:36So it's super busy on Lake Mead today.
15:39Really nice weather.
15:40It's about 90 degrees.
15:41Lots of jet skis out today.
15:43So I'm going to patrol the lake,
15:44make sure they're behaving.
15:47Today, I'm specifically looking out for jet skis,
15:50so making sure they have their equipment.
15:51Life jacket is the most important thing.
15:54And then fire extinguisher as well.
15:56But also making sure that they're obeying the wake zones,
15:59because that's a huge problem with how many people are here.
16:22Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
16:30So on the back, it tells you which side you can step on
16:34to flip it this way.
16:36There was a bit of a language barrier that I noticed.
16:40So I'm communicating with them, hey, look at that sticker.
16:44There's a proper side that you can spin it on.
16:46Use your feet.
16:47You can do this.
16:48You can do this.
16:52You can do this.
16:57You can do this.
17:02You can do this.
17:03You can do this.
17:03So I'm on my way to a junior hunter,
17:06basically a miner, who failed to punch her tag.
17:11Being a minor, it is a misdemeanor crime, so having to have a misdemeanor on your record,
17:20having to go to juvenile court, having to take your parents with you to court,
17:24all of that comes into play, whether a citation would be warranted or simply a warning
17:31and an explanation of what the law actually requires them to do, just providing that education.
17:44State Police.
17:48Hi, how are you? Is that here? Is she here?
17:52Because I have some questions for her. How about, is he here?
17:56He's at work? Okay.
17:59She's right here? Okay. All right. Hi, how are you?
18:02Good, I have some questions for you. I'm State Game Warden for Nevada,
18:07and I saw that you harvested an animal, and I just wanted to ask you about your hunt.
18:10Um, well, we got a deer.
18:14Okay. How did that go? So, where did you get your deer? When was it?
18:18Um, well, we got it on the 22nd this month. Okay.
18:24And I saw it with some other deer. Uh-huh.
18:29Kind of off of a dirt road, and I shouted it to Naveau. Okay.
18:33And then we dropped it off of the butchers after we gutted it.
18:38Okay. All right, so there are some issues, but you're not in trouble. This is an education,
18:43and then this is going to be an education for dad. I'd really like to talk to him.
18:47Is he the one who took you, or did, is this mom?
18:49Yeah.
18:50Who's the one who's out with you out in the field?
18:53Dad.
18:53Okay. And then you, uh, you dropped it off at the meat processor?
18:56Went into one.
18:57Yeah. So, who carried your tag when you were hunting?
19:00It was just my dad.
19:01Okay. So, how come your dad was carrying it and not you?
19:04Oh, is that dad?
19:08Yeah.
19:08Perfect. All right.
19:10The tail was in the backpack, so I'm responsible for her.
19:14So, yes, I technically would have been responsible for her.
19:17Yes, sir. When you shot the deer, did the deer take off running?
19:22Yeah, he didn't go through.
19:24You can chime in anytime, dad. Anytime.
19:26I'm trying to understand what, I mean, okay, the tag thing was
19:31wrong, maybe, I, I, I, I, I, as far as I, I can see, I'm, I'm, you know,
19:36and I was just trying to be responsible.
19:37Fair enough.
19:38And so it didn't get lost. So, I mean, again.
19:41Fair enough. So, this is.
19:42We notched it. We, we did everything we were supposed to do.
19:44Yeah.
19:45So, what did we do wrong?
19:47So.
19:48Stopping by.
19:48So.
19:49You want to talk to us, or before I sit there and say, hey, you know,
19:53take us to jail, I'd like to find out what I'm being charged with,
19:57or why I'm guilty.
19:59You held the tag.
20:00What does the tag say on it that you must do?
20:03It's fine.
20:04Once you arrive to the animal, what does the tag say that you must do?
20:07You're notched it out.
20:08Correct.
20:08And right in the area that it was shot.
20:10How do I know that that deer was shot, uh, in its correct location?
20:14What day was it shot on?
20:15She told me on the 22nd.
20:18Okay, how would, how would I know that looking at the tag?
20:21Um, because it's, oh, you know what?
20:23Yes.
20:24Right?
20:25We're, we're tracking now?
20:26Let me, let me, okay, now I got you.
20:29Let me step back then and I'll explain all that to you.
20:32Yeah, sure.
20:33So, we actually pulled off the wrong tag.
20:37The tag that we pulled off and notched, um, was, we're, we're gone hunting in another
20:42three weeks.
20:43For an antelope?
20:44The antelope.
20:45Yep.
20:46I, I notched the wrong tag.
20:48Okay, so.
20:49So, so, so, yes, you can, wherever I have the other tag in the house, but you can see the
20:55other tag is already notched out.
20:56Okay.
20:57I just, I just grabbed the wrong tag.
20:59Okay.
21:00Because I know that's one thing, absolutely, I don't accept the question.
21:04You have to have the tag all the time.
21:06Right.
21:07Actually, I was going to call you guys up and, and ask you, because I mean, the, the, the
21:11tag, the tag I have now.
21:12Yeah.
21:13Is, is notched out.
21:14So, I need to find out what to do to do with that tag.
21:17Okay, well, to be honest with you, I do not know.
21:19I'll get you an answer by the end of the day.
21:21If I don't get an answer and I'm still waiting, I'll call you by the end of the day and
21:26tell you
21:26that I don't have an answer yet.
21:28Okay.
21:29All right.
21:29All right.
21:30Thank you so much, guys.
21:31Have a nice day.
21:32All right.
21:32You too.
21:32Thanks.
21:34So, after leaving these two individuals, determined to provide an education for a minor and a site
21:41for the individual, providing education, letting people understand why it's important to punch
21:47your tag and let them know that we're out here and we're watching.
21:59So, it's super busy on Lake Mead today.
22:03Lots of jet skis out today.
22:04So, I'm going to patrol the lake, make sure they're behaving.
22:12Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
22:17There was a bit of a language barrier that I noticed.
22:21And so, I'm communicating with them, hey, look at that sticker.
22:25There's a proper side that you can spin it on.
22:27Use your feet.
22:36There we go.
22:37There we go.
22:42It's working, it's working.
22:43There we go.
22:57There we go.
23:01There we go.
23:04There we go.
23:26so we got a little bit of smoke which sometimes after a flip can happen
23:31so it looks like the jet ski is good they're they're taking it slow because they're nervous
23:36to flip again both of them had on life jackets which is a huge thing because a lot of people
23:41even with life jackets will panic because it's a shock of cold even though it's 80 degrees in the
23:46water it's way colder than what it is outside and also you hit the water pretty hard when you
23:51come off the jet ski so if they weren't wearing their life jackets that would have turned into
23:55a rescue instead of an actual vessel assist so that's one of the reasons why we preach having
24:01safety equipment with you and on you at all times and make sure that it's actually functional
24:06i'll be clear of that vessel assist ocean norah 10-8
24:32my name is joe barnes i'm the staff specialist statewide specialist for the wildlife diversity
24:37division which just means i juggle a lot of grants but on a personal level my specialty has always
24:43been for the past 17 so or so years i've been able to focus on birds of prey peregrine falcons
24:51golden
24:51eagles a lot of cliff nesting raptors
24:57hey how long you been here
25:00oh that's not too bad
25:03mariah is another wildlife biologist with the department so we're going to band some raptors
25:07specifically a little known uh hawk species is a fruginus hawk she's coming out today to help me
25:14kind of keep the nestlings in check corral them restrain them once we get them in hand we'll go up
25:19check a couple sites and then get an age hopefully there are some nestlings doing the blood and
25:25getting transmitters we're going to try to track their movements and try to see how they use the
25:30landscape and what particular factors of the environment are most critical for the species
25:35okay cool all right
25:38these are uh solar powered satellite transmitters so you know once you get these transmitters out
25:44it's a lot of hands-on work just to make it happen but once they're out i can sit there
25:48and download
25:49from my desk i never once need to see or touch that bird again for the rest of its life
25:54i just need to
25:55download data so the data i get is gps point every hour i also get things like temperature i get
26:03velocity yeah you know see if the birds stopped in place or if it's moving and also elevation so i
26:11get
26:11usually meters above sea level and so that way i can tell is the bird using thermals getting up in
26:18the air is it perched is it on a tree is it on a ridge line things like that hey
26:23joe do you see the
26:23adult up in the sky to your left oh no i did not see that oh yeah
26:35there's a nest really small tree but it's literally you know 150 yards out from the road
26:40so my plan is to possibly put on a transmitter on at least one of its nestlings
26:48so we only have the three transmitters maybe just put one here that's what i'm kind of thinking if we
26:52put one here and then we for sure had nestlings at the next site so one here one there gear
27:00gear up
27:03we've got capillary tubes yeah needles i think we got everything
27:10yeah if they if they start running joe just drop the ladder yeah i'll get it all right here we
27:15go
27:19this guy might be solo okay uh oh we're not getting that bird no that is its fledging flight i
27:28would say
27:33okay how's it going not too bad i'm gonna fill up sweet thank you
27:46hey what's up i guess somebody came in over flat wake speed which at this point there's nothing we can
27:53do we have to witness it apparently no one of her flies on her dock break yeah i'll i'll head
28:01over
28:01with you if it's just that line there's not much that we can do but um if there's if there's
28:07damage
28:08i'll i'll handle it okay so right now national park service just got a call in um from somebody right
28:18on
28:19the other side of this dock um for possible property damage it sounds like another vessel came in over
28:25awake speed and possibly snapped one of their dock lines so we're gonna dock right now and then walk
28:32over and find them
28:39i don't know if she's here
28:46so what it looks like is this was a pretty old rope so whoever came in over awake speed uh
28:55either
28:56this was kind of hanging out and they hit it or the wake caused the boat to hit uh against
29:02these
29:02buoys up against the dock and it just tore through that nasty old rope
29:11your call has been forwarded to voice now the person you're trying to reach is not available
29:16hi my name is alia lair i'm a game warden with the department of wildlife oh
29:23how's it going you're all good was this the the dock line that was broken yep and did they just
29:30come
29:30through and it like rocked you so hard that it snapped or what did they do i thought it broke
29:35the
29:36cleat off my back of my boat it sounded like it broke the cleat so i ran out here and
29:40i saw the
29:41cleat was still there and i looked down saw my rope was snapped right in half the boats were going
29:44like
29:44this my sliding glass doors were opening and closing my cabinets were opening closing my pocket
29:49doors was opening and closing yeah and i could barely get up to my feet to walk out because the
29:55boat was
29:55going like this so bad it's worse than any kind of windstorm out here when we have all this wake
30:01out here and people are not paying attention to the no way i know i know and there's no one
30:06out
30:06here ever watching this i'm seeing two to four of the ranger boats sitting right over at the boat
30:11launch and i'm like the problem's over here we're generally sitting over there um just because that's
30:15where a lot of traffic is but now that we know that there's more of an issue over here yeah
30:18we're
30:18going to be sitting over here over here you're going to have a shootout and it's not going to be
30:22me
30:22it's going to be them because they're getting tired of us calling them out when they're breaking
30:26the rules here we know who they are we're getting pictures of them nothing is being done get the
30:32trash get the riffraff out of here all we can do is increase our effort can you put a sign
30:36out there
30:37because obviously they don't know what no wake means maybe you need to put idle through the marina
30:41which is an issue because they're supposed to be taking their boaters education yeah so so we're
30:47we're cracking down on that on wake zone and then they should know what those buoys mean
30:50because if they go through the course they're supposed to know what that is they they need
30:54to be getting tickets or something but um one of the rangers said um instead of using the megaphone
31:00to start taking pictures and just start sending them to you guys and i'm like okay so now we're
31:05going to sit here and do your job and then pretty soon you're seeing them all rolling in here all
31:09hot
31:10and they're all going to want to get in fast and this is this is the bewitching hour
31:21the rangers aren't usually out here patrolling unless they get called out so now that we know
31:25we can start patrolling out here we'll do that we understand yeah but i'm paying for the damages
31:30i yeah i understand if they're not damage if there is any damage over a certain price point
31:34we can report that to the coast guard if it's over two thousand dollars um that's what we can do
31:39if
31:39it's below that if there's a self-report form we can send to you we're not saying there's not an
31:43issue we'll start addressing it we'll start coming over here and watching yeah i'm i'm out here at this
31:49time so you'll see me out here now that i know because before the problem is we were getting people
31:54telling us on that other side they were getting into fights because people were coming through
31:59the wake zone i'm not going to strain my vocal cords that they're not going to hear me so i
32:03got
32:03a megaphone but they don't hear it yeah or they're hearing it they're they're not honoring it and they're
32:08thinking you're crushing our party yeah karen you know like really well look what you're doing to our
32:17boats yeah and look what you're doing to our ropes and what if we have children inside and they're
32:22standing on their feet and you knock them off their feet yeah yeah a little kid yeah and we'll
32:27let our morning guys know too that they're they're coming out hot and we'll be here for when they're
32:32coming in hot too we got our megaphone so we're we're gonna be out here we'll we'll take care of
32:37it
32:39okay good yeah yeah i hope you use your megaphone oh yeah don't forget to say please yeah exactly it
32:45goes a long way yeah thank you yeah yep yep all right have a good one sounds good i appreciate
32:53it
32:54yeah so originally stuff was coming in for actual heminway harbor um with all sorts of
33:03wake zone violations people being aggressive towards each other as far as wake zone violations go so now
33:11that we know that this section is being hit hard by wake zone violations we can actually
33:16focus have somebody over at heminway harbor and then somebody over here
33:26that bird's in good shape he's going to be successful the other one's just hunkered in here
33:30it's still got feathers on or sorry down on his head so i'm putting it closer to probably
33:3736 to 38 days old i don't think you know famous last words but i don't think it'll be able
33:43to
33:43fly off on us okay
33:49oh we've got a rattlesnake in here western rattlesnake
33:55tucked in nicely right under that there he goes
33:59sees you hey buddy oh there's goes a rattle there he is yeah
34:04try not to get eaten by a fruginous hawk
34:06pretty sure i see it down on the top of one of their heads so
34:12tells me it's a younger bird i like it i think we end up just processing here what do you
34:18think probably
34:24you know it's interesting they're not that young so there is two
34:28well they're definitely younger than the one that flew away
34:33mental note of this mariah um there's some cottontail fur right there more cottontails
34:38edge of the nest
34:41hey buddy
34:44uh i think the second one's even younger
34:47it takes weeks for their feathers to grow out and to harden
34:51so right now is the kind of a critical period where you can grab them when they're pretty well
34:55developed but not ready to fly yet and there is the feistiness
35:03oh don't don't don't don't do that hey hey hey relax relax buddy hey
35:09he wants to go and he's got a lot of wind in his wings uh-huh
35:15oh
35:19hey buddy hey buddy relax relax relax relax
35:26okay
35:29relax i think two more males
35:36junior's slipping out the back okay let me know if you need me to move around
35:46whoa whoa that was interesting did you see him did he just like lunge at you um yeah so i
35:51would if
35:52mariah go over to the back side the down slope side okay i'm gonna try for this guy quick three
35:58two
36:00one
36:10that's a good bird that's a good bird
36:14we're gonna put them in a bag right now it's for their own safety really and also just to keep
36:18them contained that way they're not really tempted to try to run away or or even fly away next
36:25glad you brought your hook um just almost impossible to reach back there hey buddy
36:33come come come
36:39yeah hey buddy
36:43oh
36:47that smarted
36:52got him
37:03relax
37:03relax
37:06he drew blood too i guess i deserve it
37:21the best
37:26well yeah you kind of it wasn't just a piercing so that's actually probably good it let some of the
37:32bacteria flow out
37:33i feel like these guys this year are feistier than our previous
37:41word's getting around i think so and the transmitter in the is on the outer bag
37:47probably at least 500 meters oh hey buddy uh we're gonna have to uh yes
37:53yes hey friend okay relax relax
38:19good
38:19good
38:20yep okay do you want to do his feet now or later uh we'll do them now once i get
38:25the hood on yeah we'll
38:26take the measurements
38:28we can go lights out buddy they don't like being handled by humans i mean that's not a surprise
38:35and by putting a hood on it minimizes the stress on the birds it's good that he reminded us to
38:41take them seriously okay okay so you got the wing pretty good
38:47we're gonna look for some parasites in the blood we're also going to look for external parasites to
38:52make sure they're healthy i don't see really any parasites on peregrines either
38:58our primary goal is really to get these satellite transmitters on see how they use the landscape
39:03so where do they go once they leave their their nesting area it gives us a lot of information on
39:08mortality factors survival rates over time if you want to get a couple photos there we are one male
39:17so we can see how they're gonna call fruginous hawk nestling banded how's that good close half of the face
39:30good teenage face yeah okay this will be a little bird okay
39:34Ah.
39:4024.
39:43Hey, buddy.
39:45Here we go, here.
39:46You're okay.
39:47Okay, so, he can get a transmitter.
39:54Here you go, buddy.
39:58Seems like he's trying to get his head off,
40:00but I don't think he's made much progress yet.
40:04This is looking for blood-borne parasites.
40:08We're looking for external parasites.
40:10That's when we do the looking through the feathers.
40:16And then combine that with blood analysis.
40:24Okay, we're ready to return them.
40:43Hey, buddy.
40:45Stay put.
40:50That's a good bird.
40:52Good couple of birds.
40:56Are you friends again?
40:57I don't know if we were friends.
40:58To start with?
40:59Yeah, we might never have been friends.
41:01All right, we'll make a graceful exit here.
41:06So today was a totally successful day.
41:09We banded nestlings at two different nests.
41:11I got two transmitters out, satellite transmitters,
41:13so we'll be collecting data for the next three years.
41:15Excellent.
41:17Got everything?
41:17Very good.
41:18Nestlings are back?
41:19They're back.
41:20Oh, that's a good feeling.
41:22Two nests done.
41:23And you've got the hoods.
41:24I've got the hoods.
41:47I've got the hoods.
