00:12Hey, man, you got a boat fire?
00:14The house is the one right up there on the corner.
00:16This is a felon, so we need to try to be as safe as we can.
00:21We have an explosion on the boat.
00:23He was working on a mechanical.
00:25There was probably an electrical spark causing the explosion.
00:27I'm wondering if you'd be able to talk to me about some traps you had set out.
00:31You were trapping within 30 feet of exposed bait.
00:34I will make an incision and implant this into the fish.
00:43Nevada, a land of extremes.
00:47From the strip to the summits, it's wild country.
00:51Home to more than 900 species and a way of life worth protecting.
00:56Preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home.
01:01One team stands guard.
01:04This is Nevada Wild.
01:21We're at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, our largest body of water here in the state.
01:26We're getting new compliance checks for some of the fishermen.
01:29I make sure everybody's following the limits.
01:32Fish cooling station.
01:36My name is Zachary Black.
01:37I would have been a game warden with Nevada Department of Wildlife for 17 years.
01:41How's it going?
01:42Good, good.
01:44Did you have any luck out there?
01:45I got fluke.
01:46You got three?
01:48Striper?
01:49Yeah.
01:50Did you keep the carcass or did you throw them in there?
01:54Okay.
01:55Are you aware that there's a size limit on Striper?
01:58I got into game warden work kind of on a fluke.
02:01I checked the fishing report one night because I hadn't been fishing in a while and I saw they
02:06were hiring for game wardens.
02:07So I thought, yeah, let's see if I can get hired on with Hand Out.
02:11Whenever there's a size limit on a fish, you can fillet it, but you have to keep the carcass.
02:17Oh, okay.
02:18So I can measure the fish.
02:19Okay.
02:20The best thing about being a game warden is my office is outside.
02:23I get to drive around on a boat, in a truck, in the woods, in the desert, on the waterways,
02:29and I get to interact with all them types of people.
02:32I'm going to give you some information on it, okay?
02:34I'm not going to write your citation for it, but yeah, do me a favor, read the fishing regulations
02:39for me, okay?
02:40All right.
02:41Appreciate cooperation.
02:42Have a good day.
03:00There is a boat fire.
03:02I'm not sure where it's at.
03:06Hey, man, you got a boat fire?
03:19I'm Quinn Hesterley, Nevada game warden for the Department of Wildlife, and I patrol out
03:25of Elko.
03:26The hard part about this particular patrol is that it's pretty landlocked with private
03:32land.
03:32There's a few access points as opposed to a lot of the rest of Nevada where it's majority
03:39public land and the access is a lot easier.
03:42I have had issues with people trespassing in this exact spot before.
03:49Okay.
03:51I think he might be trespassing.
03:53We'll see if he has permission from the landowner, if he at least claims it, and I can try and
03:59follow up.
03:59And if he doesn't, we can potentially look at a possible citation.
04:07Yeah?
04:08Are the flows getting pretty high?
04:10No, it's not bad.
04:11It's warm.
04:12It's cold.
04:12Yeah.
04:13You got your fishing license handy?
04:14Yeah.
04:15I got a printed copy of it.
04:17Yeah?
04:17I'm good with that.
04:18I can buy them online.
04:19Yeah.
04:22Did you get permission to fish in there?
04:24I didn't know if it was private or not because I didn't see the signs.
04:27The orange paint.
04:28Oh, so that means?
04:29Yeah.
04:29I didn't know.
04:30I didn't even tell it was private.
04:32So, this whole bottom drainage all the way out to the ranch is private.
04:36Same thing with that side.
04:38So, you didn't talk to anyone?
04:39No, I had no idea.
04:41Because I usually, like, if there's no trespassing, I didn't work at the home.
04:45Sure, sure.
04:45And I understand that.
04:47But they actually do have it painted.
04:49That orange paint right there represents private property.
04:52Next time I go in here, I'll go ask the ranch manager.
04:55Unfortunately, it's not going to be that simple.
04:56I'm going to have to issue a citation on it for a fish private property without landowner permission.
05:02So, do you have your driver's license on you?
05:07So, I'm going to borrow this.
05:08I've got to go do my thing.
05:10Do you have any firearms or anything in your vehicle?
05:11Um, in the back underneath, I have a .22 rifle.
05:14Okay.
05:15I'm going to show it to you.
05:16There's nothing, man.
05:17Okay.
05:17Yeah, let's go take a look.
05:18I just carry it in case I see a badger or something.
05:20Okay.
05:24So, you have it just tucked under there?
05:26I'm going to have a magazine or anything in it.
05:29I'm going to borrow this while I write my citation out, all right?
05:32And then just hang out at the back of your vehicle.
05:34Okay.
05:37Bring along on a fishing contact in Secret Pass.
05:40Can I get a 2729?
05:4710-4, thank you, Raina.
05:48I'll be 10-6, I...
05:52As far as the violation of trespassing, it's...
05:55You're gaining access to a more privileged area, and in the state of Nevada, there's plenty
06:01of public land that's accessible for hunting and fishing purposes.
06:05Okay.
06:06I'll give you this back.
06:06I'll get your rifle back after I'm done with this.
06:10I know that there's a lot of private that's ran in common with the public.
06:13Yeah.
06:14But unfortunately, whenever we got orange paint...
06:17I'll remember that next time, too.
06:20So, get through the unpleasant part.
06:22So, what we got here, your information up top.
06:24What I'm signing you for is a fishing private property.
06:26So, the total for the citation is 195.
06:29Any questions?
06:30Nope.
06:30Okay.
06:31What I need from you is a signature at the bottom.
06:32It's not an admission guilt.
06:33Just promise to take care of the ticket.
06:34Okay.
06:46I'm sure it'll be a better contact next time.
06:48No problem.
06:50Be safe out there, all right?
06:53Whenever we detect a violation, we're looking to change behavior, whether it be through a
06:58simple warning and a good conversation, or taking enforcement action like a citation.
07:12Hey, God, what's up?
07:13Hey, man.
07:14You got a boat fire?
07:17Yeah, NPS pulled out a boat fire at Hemingway.
07:19So, I heard that Sean was on the water earlier.
07:22So, I don't know if we want to tell the tent another to maybe help them.
07:25But, I'm going to head out there right now.
07:28All right.
07:28I'll head that way.
07:30Yeah, there's a boat fire from Van Jury's.
07:393410, go ahead.
07:41We're walking out with NPS.
07:433410, 104, we'll see 1023, 107.
07:50This is a very dangerous situation, because we are smelling what smells like smoke from
07:55a possible fire, but we're also smelling maybe an accelerant of some sort.
08:00So, once I get an interview with the individual and see what he was actually doing in that
08:05vessel, I'll have a better idea of what we're really working with.
08:11We're in a 3410 hatchery.
08:13Tell 34103 that it's the first covered section of the dock.
08:38We have an explosion on the boat.
08:42He was working on a mechanical.
08:44There was probably an electrical spark causing an explosion.
08:49Is this from the burn right here, sir?
08:51I don't know.
08:51Okay.
08:52Yeah, just a little.
08:53This individual has burns to his face, mostly to his cheeks, some around his eyes, and some
08:59hair searing.
09:01Can we squeeze by you real quick and get up in there?
09:03Yeah.
09:04Right ahead.
09:05Once I realize that he's getting the help he needs, I'm going to start my investigation
09:08immediately, because I need to get information right away.
09:12I need to preserve all the evidence so this investigation can proceed and we can come to
09:17a conclusion on it.
09:18Did you put the fire out?
09:20You did.
09:20Okay.
09:21Good job, by the way.
09:23A little spooky walking down here with fire.
09:25You don't know what's going to happen.
09:26It's terrifying, right?
09:27It's terrifying.
09:29I don't blame you for being scared.
09:31I'm stumped.
09:33Looking at the evidence, the physical evidence that we have, we'll determine whether or not
09:37this was a criminal act or this was an accident.
09:41What we're going to do here, we're just going to keep reassessing you until the ambulance
09:44get here.
09:45So we'll be right here with you.
09:47Keep bombing your vitals.
09:48You determine.
09:49It looks like a fresh red mark.
09:51Okay.
09:52What's that?
09:52Left arm?
09:53Was it left arm?
09:55Right.
09:55Right here.
09:56Yeah, right arm.
09:59Okay.
10:02Sir, I'm going to take a couple quick photos of your injuries, okay?
10:07Okay, let me do one of your arm there.
10:12Sir, do you have a driver's license on you?
10:15Okay, okay.
10:20I got most stuff for Sean.
10:24Here, come here, I'll show you.
10:30He was troubleshooting this.
10:32Okay.
10:32He had the power was obviously on.
10:34Yep.
10:35And he hit something.
10:37I don't know what it hit.
10:38I haven't got anything out of it.
10:39He's pretty shaken up.
10:40So later came to the view, probably.
10:53He's pretty shaken up.
10:55Okay.
10:57Trapping's highly regulated, much like hunting.
11:00There's a lot of laws that are out there as far as the type of bait that you can use,
11:04how you can have that bait in relation to your trap.
11:06You can't have exposed bait within 30 feet of a trap.
11:10I've got one trapper that had a trap set, and he caught a rabbit in this trap.
11:16And when he removed the rabbit out of the trap, he just moved the rabbit about three or four
11:21feet away from the trap and then reset that trap.
11:23And that's a violation of the law.
11:25He's trapping within 30 feet of exposed bait.
11:28I can actually show you pictures of the trap and also the placement of where everything was at.
11:34So you can see here, this is the trap set up.
11:37He's got his trap right here.
11:39And the rabbit was kind of stuffed back in this little cubby that's back in here.
11:44Not sure how that rabbit could get in there.
11:47I don't know if something came in and landed right in here, and it dropped the rabbit over,
11:52or if somebody else came in and dropped the rabbit over, or if the person himself dropped the rabbit over
11:57in there.
11:58But you can kind of see the setup here.
12:01That's that line of sticks that's there.
12:03The trap would have been right here, and that rabbit would have been back in this dark little cubby back
12:08in here.
12:10It's good that the trapper that had called and turned that stuff in to me, he was out there looking
12:14out for the trapper name,
12:16making sure everybody's doing it the way that's in accordance to the laws and regulation,
12:20and being fair to everybody that's out there.
12:28So we're going to knock on the door of the residence, see if he's around.
12:40Wyatt.
12:41Wyatt?
12:41Yes, sir.
12:42Nick Brunson, State Game Warden.
12:44Good to meet you.
12:44How are you?
12:46Had, uh, wondering if you'd be able to talk to me about some traps that you had set out.
12:53Uh, which one?
12:55The ones that were right back up here on, uh, kind of close to the old Mizpah Road,
13:01right down there on that, on that ledge that was down there?
13:04There was a rabbit got put there, so I pulled that trap out of there.
13:09Well, you understand the, what, you know, what it is that we have there, correct?
13:14I mean, you had that trap, and it was set there, and that rabbit was kind of back in that
13:21spot,
13:21and I mean, it's, it's within, you know, it's exposed to the bait within 30 feet of the trap.
13:26You didn't place that rabbit in there?
13:28No, sir.
13:28You didn't, you didn't catch that rabbit in your trap at all, and then just set it next to it?
13:33No, but, I did, because I usually walk up, because I usually have the trap there,
13:39and you'd see it in the V-bill.
13:42Uh-huh.
13:42And I usually just walk up to the edge and look at the trap,
13:46and then when I pulled it out of there, there was a rabbit there and fur all over there, and...
13:52You didn't know that that, you didn't know that that rabbit was in there beforehand?
13:55No, sir.
13:56Okay.
13:57No, and I, I pulled the trap out of there, because I didn't want to clean the mess out of
14:01there.
14:01Right.
14:02Honestly, I don't know how long the rabbit was there, like I said, because I usually walk up to the
14:07edge
14:07and just look to see how the trap is, and then, like, the rabbit was down.
14:13Well, I guess when you've seen it, it was down in, like, a hole deal.
14:17Yeah, it was kind of back in that cubby a little bit there.
14:19And I don't know.
14:20So you didn't actually physically look back into there at any of your other check times
14:25to be able to see if there was a rabbit in there or not?
14:27Yeah, usually on that, I just peek over the edge.
14:30Kind of peek over.
14:30You know, just look and see, but...
14:32Well, that gives me a lot more, you know, a lot better feeling about the whole thing.
14:37Like I say, I was under the notion that you'd caught that rabbit, and you just decided to
14:43throw it back there in the cubby and leave the trap set within where that rabbit was at,
14:48so that way you were trapping within 30 feet of exposed bait.
14:52But had you not walked up far enough, you wouldn't really be able to see back in there
14:56to see that rabbit.
14:57So in the future, in the future, make sure that when you go in here and you check those traps,
15:03try to go up there a lot further to where you can actually see back in there,
15:08so that if you do have something like that, you can either pull the trap or get rid of the
15:14bait,
15:14remove that stuff from there, and you can continue trapping it, so.
15:20All right, thanks, Wyatt.
15:21I appreciate it.
15:30It could be bluffing me a little bit on that, but at the same time, I couldn't see any marks
15:35on the rabbit's legs that would show that the rabbit had actually been caught in the trap.
15:41So I can't say for 100% certainty that he pulled that rabbit out of a trap and threw it
15:47back
15:47in that hole, so I feel comfortable just giving him a warning on it, and now that he knows
15:53the game wardens are down in here looking at his stuff, I feel confident that he'll make
15:59sure that everything's playing in the future anyways.
16:12We're going to go ahead and pull a case number.
16:1434-0-3 is going to be primary on this when he arrives.
16:18Do you want to hang out and fill a lot of statement for us, or would you like to do
16:22it
16:22at a later time and send it to us?
16:23I don't know what to say.
16:24It was a lurkish line.
16:25Just what you did, who, what, when, what, my name, please fill out everything that you
16:31can up there.
16:32All right, so what do we got?
16:33So this investigation ultimately is going to be turned over to Sean Flynn.
16:37He's one of our younger officers.
16:39This is a good investigation for him to work through and get some experience.
16:44Yeah, you got burning all up there.
16:46Because that was already up.
16:47That was already up, yeah.
16:48The blast didn't push that up, so he engaged the motor while there were fumes in the compartment,
16:54correct?
16:56That's what I'm gathering.
16:57Okay.
16:57I didn't see any, like, burning, burning other than the singe of, well, his face, and you
17:04can see the singe up there, yeah.
17:06We're investigating now, and there's really nothing, it doesn't seem like it's going to
17:10be, you know, it's not like a fraud or anything is what we're, you know, not what we're thinking.
17:16So it's going to be, it's just a, it's going to be a fairly easy report, if you will.
17:20There's no, yeah, there's no, yeah, it's just basically an accident.
17:26Okay, perfect.
17:27Take this to your friend.
17:30I've got his email.
17:31I've got a phone number for him as well.
17:33We'll contact him, and he can get a CIS statement, okay?
17:36We're going to secure everything, so you don't have to worry about that.
17:39Okay.
17:39Okay?
17:40You trust my member.
17:41Follow this gentleman right here.
17:42He'll get you to where your vehicle probably is.
17:51So that was a basic explosion on a boat, fire explosion.
17:56The individual, I was working on an electrical motor, trying to clean the area off.
18:01He used some sort of aerosol, most likely had alcohol in it, and there was a spark causing
18:07the explosion.
18:08He was all the way inside that explosion.
18:12He did suffer some burns, first-degree burns to his face and his arm.
18:17He was transported to the hospital.
18:19To be honest, the guy is truly lucky to be alive.
18:22I mean, that's a very dangerous situation.
18:43My name's Lisa Osborne.
18:44I work for Nevada Department of Wildlife.
18:46All right, you guys ready to go?
18:48Let's go track some fish.
18:49I am a fisheries biologist on Lake Mojave.
18:52Today, I am out here with Gabe and Adam.
18:54They're going to help me with some of the nets and fish surgeries to implant radio telemetry
18:59tags and hopefully track them around the lake to see how they use and move through habitat.
19:06On Lake Mojave, we have an artificial habitat program where we have installed artificial habitat
19:12structures to provide cover and habitat for fish.
19:15But we're curious on how they use those habitats and then how they use coves that don't have
19:20our artificial habitat in them.
19:22All right.
19:24We're setting up an area here on the beach in our study cove.
19:29If we catch fish, we'll set up a table and start the surgeries here on this beach.
19:37Yesterday, we put three nets in Kehila Cove.
19:40Throw the weight and the float in and make sure they're not crossed.
19:45Are we at the end of it?
19:46We're good?
19:47Okay.
19:47I have them all spread throughout the cove, so hopefully they caught fish.
19:53We are looking for a largemouth bass that are a minimum size of just under three pounds.
19:59Yeah, the net's down there.
20:00There's a couple of fish in it.
20:02First fish.
20:04I got a razorback.
20:08Got razors.
20:09Of course, when we're not actually going for them.
20:14Yeah.
20:14There's two.
20:15These are now a third razorback sucker.
20:18They are not our target species for our effort today, but it's really cool.
20:24They're an endangered fish.
20:30They usually don't get this knotted up.
20:32It's crazy.
20:33You have a largemouth bass right here.
20:35His jaw's a little messed up.
20:38Look at that.
20:38I don't know.
20:39He was...
20:40He didn't look good.
20:41No.
20:42He was skinny.
20:47It's probably not an ideal candidate to do surgery on.
20:53The other two nets are going to have a lot fewer, if any, razorbacks in them.
20:58Watch.
20:59There will be 20 in the other one, too.
21:03Left side?
21:04Go on the left side, because the wind is blowing us this way.
21:07All right.
21:07It's a net two.
21:13I mean, it's one razorback after another.
21:16These are not the bass that we needed.
21:18I'm going to get this third net in.
21:20All right.
21:22Last net.
21:25More razorbacks.
21:27We got a largemouth bass?
21:29Yes.
21:31Sweet.
21:33Pretty fish.
21:35Really great fish.
21:37The fish that I'm hoping to implant are just at the top of their game.
21:40It's definitely big enough for us to do surgery on.
21:46Wee.
21:46All right.
21:48All right, all right.
21:49Really great fish.
21:52This is our target species right here.
21:56And this is a good size for it, too.
21:59We'll see how that other one is, but this one's in good shape.
22:02We have at least one surgery that we will do.
22:21So, the house is the one right up there on the corner.
22:27Up on?
22:28Yeah, on top there.
22:29This corner up here?
22:30Yeah, there's a Jeep, that orange Jeep that's parked there.
22:33And then there's a white and red Chevy that's parked there.
22:37Okay.
22:37This is a felon, so we need to try to be as safe as we can.
22:42Let's just both park across the street from the front door.
22:45So, that'll be our backup point.
22:47Okay.
22:48That sound good?
22:49Sounds good.
22:49I got a call from Lieutenant Esparza that he had received information
22:53regarding an individual who had obtained a Nevada hunting tag for a muzzleloader deer.
22:59He asked for me to assist him with visiting this individual for safety purposes
23:03due to the circumstances with a possible felon in possession of a firearm.
23:07He supposedly harvested these two animals.
23:10One was a bull elk and one was a deer.
23:12And although it wasn't a violation to get the tag, it was a violation for him to have the weapon
23:18to shoot the animal.
23:20You know, this is not just like an administrative check where you're out checking a fisherman that, you know, that's
23:25out enjoying the day.
23:26This is somebody that's, you know, already been convicted of a serious crime.
23:30And if he's hostile and doesn't cooperate and we find that he's actually in possession of a firearm,
23:37there's a chance that he may be going in today.
23:42In a case like this where you have a potential of a felon in possession of a firearm,
23:46it's important to have more than one officer, at least two, sometimes more,
23:50because those individuals have shown that they have tendencies that are potentially violent.
24:04Hey, how's it going?
24:05Good, how are you doing?
24:06Good, are you b******?
24:07Yes, sir.
24:08We wanted to see if we could talk to you about some of your hunt this year, if you had
24:12a minute.
24:14Didn't get to do any.
24:15You didn't do any this year?
24:16No.
24:16Okay.
24:17The reason is, is I have a felony and I contacted the game warden over in Elko.
24:24Uh-huh.
24:25And he told me I wasn't allowed to hunt, so I didn't even buy a gun.
24:28You didn't even go on the hunt?
24:30Did you turn the tags back in or did you keep them?
24:33I think my wife sent it back.
24:35You sent it back so you got refunded for it?
24:37I didn't get refunded for it because it was too late.
24:40Oh, you sent it back after the hunt started?
24:42Yeah.
24:42As I had some information that you actually harvested some deer, somebody mentioned that.
24:48You're sure you didn't harvest a deer or an elk on that this year?
24:51Positive.
24:52Okay.
24:53All right.
24:53Hold on a second.
24:55Well, excuse me, sir.
24:56What are you going back in for?
25:10Well, excuse me, sir.
25:11What are you going back in for?
25:13I'm going to go get the, I'm going to get my phone and then call my wife.
25:16Okay.
25:17You mind if I just accompany you with you?
25:18Okay.
25:20I'm not trying to hide anything.
25:21Oh, no.
25:22Okay.
25:22I'm being honest with you.
25:23Okay.
25:23You know, I contacted the game warden in Elko because I was told it worked.
25:28All right.
25:28If you have a felony, they changed the law.
25:31They weren't allowed to hunt.
25:32So I called the game warden.
25:33Okay.
25:33And asked him.
25:35And he told me don't.
25:37Okay.
25:37And that was it.
25:38I gotcha.
25:38If you want to search my house for a gun, we're going to do that with what I don't have.
25:43I mean, I'll tell you, well, before we do anything like that, we'll just go out and talk
25:46and then maybe we'll come back in in a few minutes then.
25:50All right.
25:51At face value, the individual seems to be pretty forthcoming and honest from what we can tell.
25:56He did claim that he received a tag or multiple tags that he did not use.
26:00We are unable to confirm whether that is true or not.
26:03So we're trying to figure out what kind of information we can get out of him further.
26:06It was before the deer season started you called him?
26:09Yeah.
26:09Okay.
26:11Yeah, because I noticed on the hunt record detail information that we had that you did draw
26:16a muzzleloader deer and a muzzleloader elk, right?
26:19Yes, sir.
26:20So you called before the hunt would have been sometime in September?
26:26Is that correct?
26:27Yeah.
26:29That's my wife named .
26:30Okay.
26:33All right.
26:36Hey, baby.
26:38Hey, the elk tag and the deer tag y'all got, did you turn it back in?
26:43Okay.
26:44She turned it back in.
26:45Did she turn it in before the hunt started?
26:47Did you turn them in before the hunt started or after?
26:49Yeah.
26:50Well, you didn't have to turn it in.
26:51It wasn't illegal.
26:52Okay.
26:52What she did, she went on N. Dot and said my hunt was unsuccessful.
26:57Oh, so she filled out this questionnaire.
26:59Okay.
26:59I gotcha.
27:00So an individual that's convicted felon and unable to possess firearms would still be able
27:06to apply for and obtain tags, especially for a weapon class such as archery, because it's
27:13not classified as a firearm.
27:14So there's someone in that individual's circumstances can still hunt in the state of Nevada.
27:18There can and sometimes is confusion between what is a firearm and if a muzzleloader falls
27:25under that classification in the state of Nevada, it does fall under that classification by the
27:30Nevada Revised Statute's definition of firearms.
27:33I don't know.
27:33Hey, can you do me a favor?
27:34Could you go get a consent to search form for the house?
27:37I don't know.
27:38I don't know.
27:41Okay.
27:42Don't worry.
27:42Don't worry.
28:03Don't worry.
28:04years? No, I had one year before that. Okay. And were you able to go on that one? I did.
28:09You did
28:09harvest one on that? I did. Okay. And I turned the tag in. All right. And since then, you disposed
28:14of
28:14your firearms to somebody else, or you got rid of the firearms, right? My daddy-in-law has a firearm.
28:20Okay. He did. He did say that if we would like, we could search for any firearms, and that's what
28:25we're going to do right here, is have him fill out a consent to search and verify that. And if
28:29nothing turns up there, we're probably pretty good to go.
28:36You said it would be okay if we go ahead and look around a little bit to see if there's
28:40a firearm in there. Are you still okay with that? Okay.
28:50Hey, honey. You took the black powder rifles down to dad's, right? No?
29:09Today I am out here with Gabe and Adams. They're going to help me with some of the fish surgeries
29:14to implant radio telemetry tags, and hopefully track them around the lake to see how they use
29:20and move through habitat. All right. Surgery time? Surgery time. Okay. So we got a big one, and then the
29:27one that's
29:27kind of listing to its side. We caught several pretty small bass, too. We're going to assess the condition of
29:35the
29:35bass that we have and make sure they're not too stressed out for surgery. How are they doing?
29:41So the one is listing. Once it gets down, some water pressure, it'll be all right.
29:47It's just baking soda. It comes out in the water as carbon dioxide, and it's not like a controlled
29:53chemical. It doesn't hurt them. And the faster they're under anesthesia, the faster it can get back
30:00to moving around and being a normal fish. We'll time how long that they're in this cooler, and then we'll
30:08move them into the surgical cradle, and then we'll move them into a recovery bath. They should recover
30:13in just a few minutes, and then we will release them. All right, Adam. Ready? All right, there he goes.
30:33They show the initial signs of anesthesia really fast, and then, like, the later stages of losing the
30:40ability to, like, swim away takes another couple minutes. So these are radio telemetry tags. I will
30:48make an incision and implant this into the fish. These are admitting an active signal we could track
30:54the location of. Starting to list. So we'll just look at that. I'm looking for this fish to be sedated
31:02to a point that it can't hold itself upright, and it's still got good gill movement. When we turn it,
31:09turn it right side up, it loses equilibrium again. So I think we're there on this fish.
31:16Okay, let's do it. Hossback, head that way. Okay.
31:20Okay. Yep. So first, I'm going to remove a few scales just on the surgical area.
31:32It's a lot easier to do this when you don't have scales right here. Not so much for the incision,
31:38but for the sutures. They will grow their scales back.
31:46So I do it on the lower belly. Obviously, the skin is thinner here. I do it just off center,
31:53just to hopefully avoid some of the internal organs. Scalpel.
32:03It's a very muscly fish. Tag eight.
32:16All right. Tag is in. Futures.
32:28Goes in so much easier without scales.
32:31Mm-hmm.
32:36Yeah, good. And then I put an antibiotic ointment on it.
32:40It's a good looking wound. All right. Um, can you open that please?
32:44It's good to go in his recovery bath.
32:50And he's already able to hold himself upright and he's already kind of fighting and coming out of it.
32:55That went pretty well. Um, and that's, especially, I mean, he's recovered almost so fast.
33:00It'll take him another couple minutes to really be able to like fight when you, like that, that fight
33:07they have when you go to grab for them. And then that's fully recovered. That's what we call fully recovered.
33:13But, and he's already upright. This is a really good sign. So, um, if I, if I turn him over,
33:19he's
33:20able to right himself and that's really important. He's got good gill movement. Yay! Um, we'll get
33:26everything cleaned up and then we'll just prep for the next fish. This is going to be a bigger fish.
33:31So, I'll add some water to its bath here. Yeah. All right.
33:45I make the smallest incision that I can to still fit this tag. And if I made the incision any
33:52bigger,
33:53it's just that much more healing that this fish has to do. The tag is rounded off. You know,
33:59it finds sort of a natural spot just there in the abdominal cavity.
34:11It's just the first one. Cold hands.
34:15Yeah.
34:15Yeah.
34:17Okay.
34:17Oh, all right. It's a good looking wound so far.
34:22It's not successful until this fish recovers. All right. Recovery bath.
34:32If I turn it upside down, can it right itself? So, there it goes. So, it's fully recovered.
34:39We'll go and release them in the back of a cove where there's nice, great cattail and root wad habitat.
34:46And hopefully, that's an area of relaxation for them. Hopefully, the fish can just go down and relax
34:53for a day. And then that's when it's really fully recovered from this whole experience.
35:01This is where we caught them. We are releasing them in the exact place that they already were,
35:05which is important. This is where they know. This is where they chose to be before we caught them.
35:17So, I want to make sure that it has a little fight in it.
35:26I mean, I'm happy. I know that at least it has the drive and at least it has the ability
35:32to
35:33want to get away and not just, if it weren't doing well, it wouldn't, it wouldn't swim away. It would
35:37just kind of float there.
35:44There it goes. It looks like the fish so far are surviving. They've been swimming around really
35:51close to the area. It's going to take them probably a couple days to return to normal behavior, but it's
35:56encouraging to see that they're moving around with post-release. So, we'll put the telemetry scanner in
36:02and make sure we can hear them. And he's beeping in with his code. So, that's a success. I mean,
36:14of course, we expect to hear them right now because we just released them. We'll come back every day for
36:19the next few days and do this. Having the fish come out and recover from anesthesia so fast and being
36:26able to hear the tags, this is as good as this can go out doing this in the field like
36:31this.
36:34I'm really excited about tracking these fish in the days and weeks and months to come. I think
36:40it's going to be really fun and we're going to get a lot of really good information out of it.
36:55I got a call from Lieutenant Esparza that he had received information regarding an individual who
37:01had obtained a Nevada hunting tag. I noticed on the hunt record detail information that we had that
37:07you did draw a muzzleloader deer and a muzzleloader elk, right? Yes, sir. All right. And since then,
37:12you disposed of your firearm. My daddy-in-law has a firearm. Okay. Good. At face value,
37:17the individual seems to be pretty forthcoming and honest from what we can tell. So, we're trying to
37:22figure out what kind of information we can get out of him further. You said it would be okay if
37:26we go
37:26ahead and look around a little bit to see if there's a firearm in there? Okay.
37:32I'm going to call my wife again. Hey, honey. You took the black powder rifles down to Dodge, right?
37:43No. They got a consent form for me to sign, and I'm going to wait for you to get here,
37:47because I don't want to be in any trouble. Okay. So, she wants to wait till she gets here?
37:53Sure. Okay. That's fine. We can do that. Yeah. Like I said, I don't want to lie to you.
38:00No. The guns were supposed to be gone, and they're probably in there, so I'm going to lie to you
38:06either way. Okay. I thought she took them to her dad's house, and I guess she didn't.
38:13Is this her? Okay. Don't get mad at me, because she gets mouthy. Oh, she does?
38:23Hi. How are you? I'm better. How are you? State game warden. I'm Fred. This is Buck.
38:29I'm . Hey, we're just here for information right now. Okay. We're talking with . We got some
38:35information that you guys had some tags last year for deer and elk. Nobody's under arrest. Nobody's
38:40in detention right now. There's so many different rules out there. So, listen. In 2012, there was a
38:47case that went to Nevada Supreme Court. They decided that convicted felons will be banned from
38:54having possession of antique or muzzleloader-type weapons. That was an actual decision made in
39:01Nevada, but that wasn't quite a long time ago. That was in 2012. And a lot of people don't stay
39:07on top
39:07of the case law. I want to give that to you guys, the case law, so you guys will have
39:11that. And then he
39:13did say, I think when you were on the phone, that he kept the tags. I did. I mean, it
39:18made sense to
39:19make sure we fill out that postcard whether you hunt or not. So, I went online and filled that
39:24postcard out that said, did you scout? No. Were you successful? No. Okay. Because, see, we filled out
39:30for that last year. Right. And then this year when we went to register, that's when she's like,
39:34oh, no, no, you can't hunt. And it's like, wait, the other cop said we could hunt. She's like, oh,
39:39no, you can't hunt. Yeah. Are you guys in possession of the firearm here?
39:44The black powder? Yeah. I have it. Okay. Is it locked where he can get it?
39:51He can't be in possession of it. Okay. So, you can bring it to your dad's? Yeah,
39:55I can take it to my dad's. Okay. Yeah. And he lives here? Yeah, he lives right down the street.
39:59Can you do that while we're here? Yeah. Can you do it over here so that we don't have to
40:02take it?
40:02Nobody's going to freak out when I come out and jump? No. Actually,
40:05you mind if I go in with you just to make sure it's unloaded? That's fine. Okay.
40:09Due to the circumstances, there's question as to whether or not he was
40:12within vicinity or actual possession. So, at this time, we're removing the firearm from the
40:17dwelling, but it is not coming with us. I thank you guys for your cooperation.
40:23Overall, this interaction went fairly smooth. It started with the individual being a little bit
40:28less than honest or withholding information from us, but in the end, that individual decided to
40:33come forward with what was going on and the tags that they had possessed and the animals they had
40:37killed in the past. So, we are going to leave here today. Thank you for providing the information,
40:43and we'll keep in touch with you. And we are going to have discussions with
40:46the district attorney and see how the district attorney wants to move forward with this case.
40:50Yeah. So, it's kind of an interesting set of circumstances. But, you know, they still had
40:56them, even though after they knew that they couldn't be hunting with them, they still had
41:00them in the closet in their own bedrooms. Yeah. So, you know, we, I know, I know he knew where
41:04they
41:04were at. That's why I call his wife to ask where they were. I don't know what's going to happen.
41:09It's
41:09going to be kind of up to the district attorney on what he wants to do. Sounds like a plan.
41:13Okay. All right, man. Cool. See you.
41:43All right.
