01:26You know, it's been a lot of years since this started.
01:28And each and every one of you here, you know, you're all, you're all part of this.
01:32I was telling my grandson today, I said, you're going to be able to tell your grandkids what you helped
01:36out with up here.
01:37That you bring all this back.
01:39Okay, with that, I better go ahead and now say a prayer here with these sheep.
01:52All right, my name is Mike Cox, statewide big horn sheep, staff biologist.
01:58Tomorrow, we're going to capture some California big horn sheep off the sheep creek range.
02:03We're looking at 20 to 25 animals.
02:06Majority of them will be using lambs.
02:09Managing our big horn sheep statewide for over 20 years.
02:13It's been my responsibility to put sheep back on the mountain and work with everyone to do that.
02:20This is a big deal.
02:20And I want you to tell us a little bit about why it's a big deal.
02:26So this is the first reintroduction of big horn sheep to travel lands in Nevada.
02:30So this is a very significant day for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe.
02:34The lake range hasn't seen sheep since the early 1900s.
02:37I'm Emily Hagler.
02:38I work for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe in the Natural Resource Department.
02:41And I'm an environmental specialist.
02:43The east side of the lake is a very sacred site to the tribe.
02:47And a lot of people don't ever get the opportunity to go to the east side of the lake.
02:50It's a very big deal to have this collaborative effort happening with Nevada Department of Wildlife
02:55to bring sheep back to the reservation.
02:57I hope everybody here really just understands the significance of that.
03:02It's really neat.
03:03We've got a lot of experience putting sheep back to places that they haven't been at for over 100 years.
03:09But this one's special because this is the first ever translocation to a tribal land here in the state of
03:16Nevada.
03:17Well, get some good sleep and we'll see you bright and early here, 4 to 45 a.m.
03:40We are here, so we're going to set up the base camp and we'll see the helicopter come in in
03:51about a half hour.
03:53And we better get our butts in gear and get it ready.
03:59When Lewis and Clark explored the west for the first time, there was likely a million bighorn sheep
04:06scattered from northern Montana all the way to Texas.
04:10By the 1920s, we had lost 90 to 95 percent of the bighorn sheep.
04:16So I'm putting together a swabbing tote to sample the bacteria and the tonsils of each animal.
04:25It's one of the greatest things I've done in my career is to be a part of restoring herds and
04:31throughout the state.
04:34So a helicopter is going to be landing probably about 50 yards to the west of the tripod, which is
04:42the weigh scale.
04:43They'll be brought and weighed.
04:46And then each animal will be on a separate table.
04:50You can see the oxygen tanks here.
04:52We'll start giving them oxygen when they come in.
04:55All the collars, the satellite collars, are going to be put on on that table.
04:59And so this is our processing tables.
05:20The folks handling sheep, the big things are plenty of support underneath the animals.
05:27Don't carry weight by the head, but somebody needs to be on the head at all times to pull in
05:32that head.
05:34It may be damaged.
05:35The horns.

06:07There's a lot of things that are critical to safely capture those animals and bring them back.
06:13We definitely want the capture crew to be safe when they're out there flying in the helicopter.
06:18And then the loading of the sheep.
06:20They don't lose any animals.
06:22They don't run off.
06:32My name's Quinn Hesterly.
06:34I'm a Nevada game warden with the Department of Wildlife.
06:37Today we're working on a case about a deer that was field-dressed and left at the dump.
06:45The individual left their tag on top of it.
06:48I've been in contact with the individual, and he's going to meet us at the office.
06:54I'll be working with Jason Jackson.
06:56I'll be the primary.
06:58Jason will be there as more or less the cover officer.
07:00He may interject whenever he hears something that I may not be picking up on.
07:05But for the most part, he's just there for my safety and his.
07:11Why would you just dump a deer that you shot and gutted in a city dump when he could have
07:19dumped it in the, like, out in the woods?
07:22And the coyotes would have eaten it up in, like, one or two days, and there would have been no,
07:27nothing left.
07:28So basically there would have been no case had he not dumped a deer where he dumped it.
07:32That's the deer.
07:34This guy left his deer tag attached to the antlers.
07:38It's like leaving your driver's license at a crime scene, right?
07:40He had no intention of attempting to hide what he did.
07:44He has had tags in the past.
07:46He has harvested other animals.
07:50Why just leave this one behind with all your information right there?
07:56We don't know what their feelings are towards Game Wardens.
07:59Potentially they may know that they did this violation, so they may not be very happy to see us.
08:04But as it sits right now, what I'm looking at is the Waste of Game.
08:07It's a misdemeanor violation, but it does come with demerit points.
08:12And what that means is it's similar to driving violations.
08:16You have too many driving violations, your driving privileges are revoked.
08:20Essentially the same thing happens with too many game violations.
08:24If you accrue a 12 demerits, you lose your hunting privileges for three years.
09:09To capture crews, they are to slow those animals down to as slow as speed as possible.
09:14Which means they're going to allow that group of animals to be going uphill.
09:18That's when they would prefer to take their shot.
09:20The gunner knows that the pilot is, hey, here's your nanosecond to shoot.
09:25So they're just in sync.
09:40First thing that will calm those animals down is the blindfold.
09:44When they can't see what's going on, their heart rate automatically goes down.
10:03The crew that we have today, they have captured literally thousands of animals.
10:08They are so talented.
10:12Four coming in.
10:14All crews, hands on deck.
10:38We have four coming in now.
10:41They'll weigh them.
10:42Then they'll bring them to the table where the veterinarians will check them out.
10:47And then from there, they'll move them into the trailers after they've taken their blood
10:50samples and making sure they're healthy and happy.

11:47One of the important things also is we're keeping our voices down.

11:55Capture myopathy can occur when an animal is overstressed.
12:00It's a combination of high temperature, high respiration rate, and a high heart rate.
12:06A sedative will really help the animal.
12:08They're not really hearing things.
12:11They're not really feeling things.
12:12Our wildlife vet is going to be monitoring the conditions that would lead to capture myopathy.

12:26This week has been my first week of captures with the department, and I'm providing the veterinary support for that.
12:32Today we're surveying for a number of diseases.
12:34One of the biggest concerns is called mycoplasma ovomemoniae, and it causes pneumonia.
12:41What we're trying to do is figure out who in the herd is still shedding this bacteria with bighorn sheep.
12:48It's a fairly small percentage of the herd that's causing that huge mortality in the lambs.
12:53It's really exciting to move animals and reestablish populations and also to figure out what's going on disease-wise
13:01and help improve the health of these populations.
13:14When you have a capture like this and you're in charge of the health and safety of these animals,
13:19it's certainly a stressful situation.
13:22There's a lot of time and effort that goes into relocating and capturing animals,
13:28and we want to make sure that we get them back out of the landscape healthy.
13:48It's really great to see so many getting captured today.
13:51We've got a ram now, we've got some babies, we've got some good ewes, and they're all in really good
13:56health.
14:04You know, we've put sheep in a lot of places, but to be able to help a First Nation build
14:10from the ground up
14:11a program to manage sheep that their ancestors hunted is huge.
14:19The lake range is where they're heading.
14:21It's about a four-and-a-half-hour drive.

15:13After hearing this guy's voice, this is a guy that was involved with a search and rescue in Elko County.
15:22His friend had passed away on this hunt.
15:24I was a part of the search and rescue.
15:26We had to haul his friend's body off the mountain.
15:30Last evening, the third day, I went up the canyon.
15:33Here was a big boy with a doe.
15:35Saw to him, he went over the ridge, and I didn't go.
15:38So, I huffed it up there, and then I go over a ridge, and there they are.
15:43So, then I shot him.
15:44I was about six inches off, but I still got him.
15:47When I looked away, I looked up and he was gone.
15:50Nothing happened.
15:50Yeah.
15:51You ended up finding it later?
15:53How long later?
15:55Next morning, around 10 a.m.
15:56Around 10?

16:53So, I went and got the drinks.
16:55I went up to where he agreed to meet at him, and I went around the ridge, you know, on
17:01their side, looking.
17:04I called the sheriff's department.
17:06So, the search nurse were starting to break down.
17:10And then I went to the dump, and I dumped off the deer.
17:15And then I washed off the deer of blood and looked back to my truck.
17:20I felt, you know, like I was a champion.
17:24Well, I want to extend my sympathies for losing a hunting partner.
17:27I mean, it's hard.
17:29I understand that.
17:30But the reason for the contact today is the deer at the dump.
17:35Did you give any thought of possibly trying to get that to a processor to possibly donate
17:39it because you wanted to get rid of it?
17:42I thought, what are my chances of dropping it off at, like, St. Vincent's or any place?
17:47What about locally in Elko?
17:49Well, what charity would accept a deer in Elko?
17:52So, there are a couple.
17:54It comes down to the wanton waste of the deer, okay?
17:57That's the whole point of me coming to Reno today.

18:56His friend was a Native American, and his wife is saying, this deer is now cursed, and
19:01you should not eat it.
19:03You should not even have it in your house.
19:04And come to find out, this is the reason why that his deer wound up in the Elko County
19:10landfill.
19:11So that swayed your decision on what you ultimately did with the deer the next day?
19:15I never got to the point where I made some phone calls to see, hey, soup kitchen, do you
19:23want to accept the deer as a donation?
19:26And there was that dump, and I wanted to get back home.
19:31And so I went to the dump right there on the sign and said, animals, just report that you
19:37have one, and they're good to go.
19:38Pretty much, and so $15, okay, $15.
19:43And so I dumped it off, and I was there because I was told to not eat that deer.
19:52So, Paul, I would like to have you write me a statement of basically just kind of the story
19:59of a deer, of how you harvested it, your buddy passing, and then how you came to your decision
20:06to take it to the dump.
20:10While you do that, I'm going to talk with Jason, and we're going to come up with what
20:14we would like to do.

21:07Not only do we deal with the local boating traffic, but also we deal with a lot of tourism
21:11traffic out here, where they just don't have an idea of what recreational boating laws are.

29:43The moral dilemma that I'm struggling with is during all of that, his partner died, and he
29:49was dealing with the cremation process.

29:53As far as sighting this guy, it's just a little bit more of a dilemma of, at what point do
29:59we allow some leniency?

31:15But rather than going with the big game want and waste, which it comes with a 12 demerit
31:22violation, which then you would lose your hunting privileges for three years.
31:26What I'm going to cite you for is the waste of game, not big game, which brings it down
31:31in the merits and allows you to still be able to hunt.
31:35We addressed the issue of losing the deer.
31:37But also, I am completely sympathetic on the situation you were in.
31:41You were under a lot of stress.
31:44But essentially, you were working with the game warden at one point.
31:47You could have easily asked Jason, hey, I don't want this deer.
31:51What can I do with it legally?
31:53So if you don't mind, do you have your driver's license on you?

39:00and we'll be able to see exactly
39:03where those six females are having babies this spring
39:06and see what habitat is best for raising their lambs.
39:12So we're coming up on the pyramid now.

39:19for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe,
39:21I think that this is a very exciting moment
39:23that every member of the Paiute Tribe should be proud of
39:26and really a moment that every Nevadan should be proud of
39:30where we can come together as a state agency
39:33and as a tribal entity to really celebrate
39:37the reintroduction of the species on tribal lands.
39:41This is really the history of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe
39:43happening right now.

41:06it's like adding more voice to our culture
41:08and to who we are as people.

41:13because I'm very proud to be Native American
41:15and I think it's just a great thing
41:17that we have another ancient animal with us.
