00:00Pitiful grandchild, this was your last wish.
00:06Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we're looking at the best introductions to boss fights across
00:11gaming history.
00:13You know us, we like to keep things interesting, so only one boss per franchise.
00:18Also, since some of these bosses do appear late in game, beware of some spoilers ahead.
00:33Before we dive in, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:38the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:43Akuma, Super Street Fighter II Turbo
00:55Just because a boss has a simple intro doesn't mean it isn't completely badass.
01:00Case in point, Akuma.
01:02To reach him in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, you can't use any continues, and you either
01:07have to beat the high score or reach the normal final boss, M. Bison, in under 25 minutes.
01:13Now, Bison himself is one tough bastard, so to see Akuma suddenly appear and eliminate
01:19him immediately, instantly set the tone for an intimidating brawl.
01:24And sure enough, Akuma fights like the devil himself.
01:30Dr. Steinman, Bioshock
01:40The horror elements of Bioshock begin to fade as your journey through Rapture continues.
01:45But for that first third or so, things are pretty tense.
01:49That's what makes the twisted plastic surgeon, Dr. Steinman, so memorable.
01:53Like most people in the city, the doc has gone mad.
01:56And his sick need to create beauty has led him to mutilate his patients.
02:00When you enter his ward, he's mid-murder, and the spotlights that reveal other former
02:05patients hung above him is a pretty startling image.
02:09Which is why you don't feel too bad using the arsenal you've amassed so far to lay into
02:14him.
02:15Giratina.
02:16Pokemon Legends Arceus.
02:24Throughout this Pokemon spinoff, Volo is your ally, teaching you techniques, giving you potions,
02:29and helping the people of the region.
02:31Of course, it's all for show, and you face off against him during the story's climax.
02:36After defeating him, it seems like you're victorious, with him acting like a sore loser and all, until he
02:43mentions feeling the presence of an eldritch being, which is never a good thing to hear.
02:48A shadowy portal appears behind him, and with a flap of its mighty wings, Giratina emerges.
02:54Pokemon games aren't known for their presentation, but Giratina's entrance is an imposing one that
03:00leaves a mark, especially since you don't get to heal between these fights either.
03:12Berserker.
03:13Gears of War.
03:14Don't move, was that a Berserker?
03:19She can hear us.
03:21While Berserkers later appear more commonly, your first encounter in the original Gears of
03:25War is a boss fight, and it is a scary one.
03:29Blind, but with impressive hearing and smell, this behemoth instantly strikes fear into the
03:35hearts of Marcus and Co., and she does this by not only disposing of her own companions,
03:40but by ripping through one of your own when he can't stay calm.
03:44You're also told to lure the Berserker outside to hit her with the Hammer of Dawn,
03:48since your guns won't work.
03:50This whole scene prepares you for a fight you should be on edge for.
03:55Control, this is Delta.
03:57Come in.
03:58Prototype Robot Wolfenstein The New Order
04:01So long since I practiced my English, it's a dying tongue.
04:12You, I've seen you before.
04:14The entrance of this boss fight comes with a pretty disturbing twist.
04:18At the beginning of the game, BJ Blazkowicz and his friends are captured by mad Nazi scientist,
04:23Death's Head.
04:24You're then forced to choose which of your two friends will survive,
04:28while the other will be killed to have their organs harvested.
04:32Whoever lives gets to be one of your companions throughout the game, but at the end,
04:36Death's Head reveals he kept the brain of the other, which he loads into the prototype of a killing machine
04:42for you to fight.
04:43It's a sad twist of the knife, made more impactful when you win, and must mercy kill your friend.
04:50I see your son, Berks.
04:53In a better place than this.
05:02Dracula, Castlevania Symphony of the Night
05:04Much like in movies, there are classic video game lines we all hold dear to us.
05:09And one of them comes during the intro of Dracula's opening fight in Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
05:15As Richter Belmont, players confront Dracula for, once again, appearing to wreak havoc on mankind.
05:22In response, Dracula says one of the coldest things ever uttered.
05:26What is a man?
05:28A miserable little pile of secrets!
05:32But enough talk!
05:33Have at you!
05:34While the fight itself isn't hard, it is the intro after all,
05:38this line succinctly sums up Dracula's distaste for humanity,
05:42while also being an undeniably cool thing to say.
05:49No! It cannot be!
05:54AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
05:55Isshin, The Sword Saint.
05:58Shadows die twice.
06:00Which means, Sekiro.
06:06I must destroy you.
06:10Isshin, The Sword Saint is one of the hardest final bosses in any Souls game,
06:15a genre defined by its hard bosses.
06:17It's also a genre defined by sick-ass intros to those bosses, and Isshin is no exception.
06:23You first fight Genichiro while defending Lord Kuro,
06:27and once you've defeated him, he cuts his own throat, out of which springs an arm.
06:32Isshin, The Sword Saint, then literally crawls his way out of his adoptive grandson's body
06:38just in order to fight you.
06:40It's an incredible moment preceding one of the standout clashes of Sekiro.
06:45Well done.
06:48Sekiro, farewell.
06:51Serene, Clare Obscure, Expedition 33
07:05Serene is one of the most beautifully haunting bosses in Clare Obscure,
07:09and a big part of her aura comes from both the area you encounter her in,
07:14and the intro to her fight.
07:16Through a spell with ballet-like movement, she shows the party visions of those they've lost.
07:22For Lunay, her parents.
07:24For Mael, Gustav.
07:25For Ciel, her husband and child.
07:27And for Minoko, his former mentor.
07:30The only one who sees through her spell, staring daggers at her, is Verso,
07:34one of many hints towards his true purpose within this world.
07:38The fight then begins somberly, as Serene wipes away the visions in one swoop,
07:43before bearing down on the party.
07:57Typhon, Hades II
08:07Typhon, the father of all monsters in Greek mythology, is the final boss in Hades II.
08:12But long before you ever face him, you're conditioned to fear him in two ways.
08:17One, through dialogue as you climb Mount Olympus, hearing about the damage and chaos he's causing.
08:22And two, through mini-boss encounters with various appendages and offspring,
08:27like his tail and those stupid twins.
08:30So, you're already on edge the first time you enter Typhon's arena.
08:34Then, his massive form breaks through the darkness, and roars so loudly that his health bar bursts.
08:41Not knowing how much health he has makes you try to fight as hard as you can,
08:45against a beast with unbelievable power.
08:58The first of the three big villains you go up against in Baldur's Gate III is Cetheric Thorn,
09:04and the final confrontation is genuinely jaw-dropping.
09:07You can fight him head-on, or you can make him see the error of his ways.
09:12Either way, you'll have to face the wrath of the deity he serves.
09:15Perfectly positioned by a pit, Cetheric throws his body in, giving it to Merkul, Lord of Bones,
09:22who doesn't take kindly to you defeating his champion.
09:25I am Merkul.
09:29I am Merkul.
09:30I am Merkul.
09:33And you have saved my children.
09:38As the climactic music swells and Merkul's voice echoes its threats,
09:44a gigantic reaper rises from the pit and takes up its scythe.
09:48It's hard to see that and not get goosebumps.
09:52Shit.
09:54Master Hand.
09:55Super Smash Brothers.
10:03In bringing multiple Nintendo characters together to duke it out,
10:07players may have wondered who could serve as a final boss.
10:11Nintendo's number one character Mario?
10:14The big bad Bowser?
10:15Some other behemoth from the company's long history?
10:18But what we got was Master Hand, who was teased in the opening cinematic.
10:23Though his entrance is short, it leaves a mighty impression.
10:32The announcer doesn't even call out his name,
10:35and Master Hand descends upon you with a hearty laugh
10:37that signals he's going to enjoy this.
10:40The villain's entrance has been tweaked over the years with more intense music
10:44and the surprising addition of Crazy Hand.
10:46And we love each one.
10:53Leviathan.
10:54Final Fantasy XV.
11:03The world of video games is full of gigantic monsters
11:07who will try to intimidate you with their immense size before the fight kicks off.
11:11The Leviathan from Final Fantasy XV is a perfect example.
11:15The people of Altissia revere and fear the Sea Snake, and for good reason.
11:19When Lunafreya awakens the deity to ask for aid,
11:23Leviathan doesn't take kindly to being summoned by a puny mortal.
11:33You'll have to prove yourself worthy, or watch as it lays waste to the city around you.
11:38Seeing Leviathan emerge is an awe-inspiring moment,
11:42but hearing its anger prepares you for the high thrills, citywide clash that follows.
11:56Senator Steven Armstrong, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.
12:07Revengeance is a ridiculously over-the-top action game,
12:10so we'd expect nothing less from its final boss.
12:14The conflict begins when the ground crumbles beneath Raiden's feet,
12:17revealing an impressive Metal Gear.
12:19After some unhinged exposition from the villain, your fight against the giant mech begins.
12:25It's a great intro to the finale, as well as showcasing the titular Metal Gear's power,
12:30but it's the fight against the man inside that leaves the biggest impression.
12:42With his machine destroyed, Armstrong exits to reveal his nanomachine augmentation.
12:47He then begins to beat the absolute snot out of Raiden, just to show the player how strong he is.
12:53It's just as extreme as this character should be.
13:00Nanomachines, son!
13:03Cyberdemon.
13:04Doom.
13:12The Cyberdemon appears many times in the Doom franchise, though it isn't always a boss.
13:17But the enemy's design and fame is partly why its entrance in the 2016 game is so great.
13:23It doesn't appear until fairly late, but the Slayer is told of its existence by Samuel Hayden.
13:28Therefore, our controllers were shaking in excitement leading up to the fight.
13:32The Cyberdemon opens with a surprise attack.
13:35As the player is entering a new area, a giant claw rips through the doorway and tosses you like a
13:40ragdoll.
13:45As the door closes behind him, leaving you without an exit, the demon screeches and the fight begins.
13:52Simple, but a frightening display of intimidation.
13:59Rikard, Lord of Blasphemy.
14:02Elden Ring.
14:10Rikard from Elden Ring is a bit of an interesting case as he doesn't actually receive an entrance until after
14:16his first phase is fought.
14:18Players will come across a massive, coiled serpent in the Volcano Manor.
14:22Whether you attack first or it does, the fight begins immediately.
14:26However, after you defeat it, and its head lulls lifelessly, it turns to reveal Rikard's real face.
14:38Oh, very well.
14:40He then reaches into the snake's mouth and pulls out a sword covered in creepy, tendril-like arms.
14:46A second phase isn't necessarily surprising, though the human-like face and his disturbing weapon are.
14:52The Lord of Blasphemy's slithering voice is just the cherry on top.
14:57Together we will devour the very corner.
15:03Goliath. Devil May Cry 5.
15:13Most larger-than-life bosses are accompanied by a cutscene that either displays their significant size,
15:19power, or both.
15:21But Devil May Cry 5 plays things a little differently, at least where Goliath is concerned.
15:27Normally, a giant beast with a gaping stomach mouth would make a protagonist uneasy.
15:32But Nero decides to go the Spider-Man route by taunting and quipping at the baddie, sending him into a
15:38rage.
15:39I shall show you the wrath of the mighty Goliath!
15:48Goliath.
15:48Whether it's his effortless step out of a tossed vehicle or referring to Goliath's attack as a party trick,
15:54the hero oozes charisma.
15:56The comedic cutscene is a nice change of pace to bosses that dwarf the player in size.
16:01But it also fits the franchise's style incredibly well.
16:07Cool trick!
16:09Hey, do you do parties?
16:18In your journey through Hallownest, you'll come across all manner of disturbing enemies.
16:23But what you might not be expecting to come across is yourself.
16:27In the Deepnest area, players will spot a clone of themselves on a different path.
16:31But when you reach that spot, the copy will be gone.
16:35Following its trail, you'll eventually go down a path that gets closed off,
16:38which should immediately tip you off that you've been led straight into a trap.
16:47At the end, the mimic twists and contorts, transforming into its true form of a giant spider.
16:53Not only is it a great entrance, but it leads you into a boss fight unawares.
17:03The Evil Within 2
17:12Coming from the creator of Resident Evil,
17:14The Evil Within has some pretty unsettling boss designs.
17:18However, none of them make an entrance like the Matriarch does.
17:22As Sebastian confronts Myra towards the end of the game,
17:24the two have a heated argument amidst a snowy backdrop.
17:28It eventually turns violent, with Sebastian shooting Myra in the head after she attacks.
17:33But this is what actually causes the fight to begin.
17:49My god.
17:50Myra transforms into the Matriarch, a hulking monstrosity with a fondness for spiders.
17:56The reveal is handled expertly.
17:59The camera work and score make it feel like something out of a horror flick.
18:02The confrontation also adds emotion that you carry with you into the fight.
18:13Jack Baker, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.
18:18All right, now we got several calls about some missing persons lately.
18:22You don't understand.
18:23I gotta get out of here.
18:24Speaking of Resident Evil, Jack Baker is one nasty piece of work.
18:29That's made abundantly clear to you throughout the game's opening chapters,
18:32where he torments and hunts poor Ethan.
18:35Despite having frequent contact with him, his actual fight still makes one hell of a first impression.
18:42Players may think they're being tossed a lifeline when a police officer shows up,
18:45but what they've really been given is a front row seat to an execution.
18:54As Ethan argues with the officer, Jack drives a shovel through the back of his head.
18:59The family's patriarch is like a villain out of a slasher movie,
19:02so this instance is appropriate on top of being a wicked show of strength.
19:14Asriel Dreamer, Undertale.
19:21Though we love Asgore's opening fourth wall break in the neutral route,
19:26it's tough to top Asriel from the pacifist one.
19:29Reaching this fight requires sparing every enemy you come across, including the bosses.
19:33When Asgore gets ready to attack, he'll be interrupted by Toriel and all your new friends.
19:39They make him see the errors of his ways, and it seems like you'll be getting a nice, warm, happy
19:44ending.
19:46Until Papyrus mentions a tiny flower.
19:55The homicidal maniac Flowey then captures everyone, having stolen the six human souls.
20:01He then takes in the souls of all your friends, turning into his final, ultra-powerful form.
20:13It's a wonderful pull of the rug, but also the result of some fascinating lore.
20:22Moon Presence
20:23Bloodborne
20:32From Software has proven itself a masterful studio when it comes to enemy and boss design.
20:37Every single one of those found in Bloodborne is, at the very least, interesting.
20:41And while the Moon Presence isn't the best fight, there's something about its entrance that sets it apart.
20:46It acts as an optional final boss, and appears after fighting Garmin if you fulfill certain criteria.
20:59As it glides towards you lit by a full moon, it's much more serene than any other fight opening in
21:05the game.
21:05It's gangly frame and writhing tentacles clash with the pristine backdrop, making for a remarkable shot.
21:13If only any other From Software fights eased us in like this.
21:24Metroid Dread
21:31On the planet of ZDR, Samus must fight through plenty of hostile creatures.
21:37However, one she's faced several times before is met with a suitable amount of disrespect.
21:43Entering the arena in Cateris, the bounty hunter will be immediately on edge.
21:47But as the looming presence is revealed, she becomes much more relaxed.
21:52In a flawless display of body language, Samus casually fires a charged shot at Kraid's face after he roars at
21:59her.
22:06She radiates the confidence that comes from a long career of navigating deadly planets.
22:11It's almost as if it's a boss entrance for her, rather than Kraid, and we love every second of it.
22:26The Rat King
22:27The Last of Us Part 2
22:38When it comes to this terrifying baddie, it's a combination of incredible buildup and an awesome design that earns it
22:45the spot.
22:45As Abby navigates the lower level of the hospital, she'll have a handful of infected to deal with.
22:51All the while, you'll hear unsettling sounds of something bigger lurking about, and see smears of blood along the walls.
22:58When Abby enters an abandoned ambulance, that's when it rears its ugly heads.
23:11The Rat King is made up of several infected, all grossly fused together by fungal plating.
23:17As if that wasn't bad enough, you're then confronted by a suspenseful chase sequence before you even have the chance
23:24to defend yourself.
23:31The Great Mighty Poo
23:33Conquers Bad Fur Day
23:42Any boss made of feces is probably gonna have a memorable entrance, no matter what it actually is.
23:48But we will always applaud Rare for deciding to turn the Great Mighty Poo into a musical number.
23:54After entering Poo Mountain, Conquers hears a deep voice demanding some sweet corn.
23:59Upon tossing a few pieces into a nasty pit, exuberant horns blare out a jaunty tune as the fecal giant
24:06rises.
24:13He then begins to sing, delivering some of the funniest, most ridiculous lyrics we've ever heard.
24:19Do you really think you'll survive in here? You don't seem to know which creek you're in.
24:28The entire fight is a delight, as the boss will signal different phases with new verses.
24:33But his introduction remains one of the game's strongest moments all these years later.
24:38How do you think I keep this lovely grin?
24:43Doc Ock
24:44Marvel's Spider-Man
24:52Most players probably knew Otto Octavius was going to turn evil by the end of the game.
24:57Yet Insomniac still managed to pull it off supremely well.
25:01Although it doesn't take place directly before a fight,
25:04the Doc Ock reveal at the raft is a powerful and impactful scene.
25:13It also marks the beginning of the climax,
25:16with Peter's fight against the Sinister Six members acting like one big build-up.
25:20Regardless, the intro to the Doc's actual fight is still an emotional high in the story.
25:27You're fighting the wrong man.
25:32I'll have it your way.
25:35With a brand new suit, Peter confronts him atop Oscorp Tower.
25:39You can feel the pain in both the actors' performances, setting you up for a conflicted clash.
25:44And of course, you'll rest easy, knowing your secret is safe with me.
25:52Thor, God of War Ragnarok
26:01Some may prefer the intensity of the Poseidon fight, but we're going with a slow burn option.
26:06Paying homage to a hidden cutscene in the 2018 game was a great way for Ragnarok to introduce Thor.
26:12At first, it seemed like we'd get a more bombastic recreation of Kratos and Baldur's first meeting.
26:18But after the God of Thunder shows up, he offers his enemies mead.
26:22It isn't long before Odin joins them in an attempt to get Kratos to back down.
26:25Don't take all day.
26:27The actors are on top of their game, and every single line is drenched with tension.
26:33We knew that at some point, the fragile piece would be broken.
26:36More accurately, it exploded with tremendous force as Thor took Kratos into the air.
26:58The intro to Clayface's fight is also one of the best twists in any superhero game.
27:04With Joker dying from the Titan formula, he performs a blood transfusion on Batman, sending the hero in search of
27:10a cure.
27:11Meanwhile, he pulls strings from the sidelines.
27:14When you finally confront your nemesis in the climax, Talia gains the upper hand and runs him through with a
27:20sword.
27:20Unfortunately for her, that was never actually Joker.
27:26Confusing, isn't it?
27:27I know I'd want to know just what the hell is going on if I were you.
27:32The real villain hired the shape-shifting Clayface to masquerade as him in public,
27:36who then reverts to his real form to pummel you into the dirt.
27:40The twist took us all by surprise and set up a fun fight in the process.
27:50Malice.
27:51Shadow of the Colossus.
27:59Shadow of the Colossus has some of the most stunning art direction in video game history.
28:04And because of that, some of the best boss designs.
28:07The game chronicles one man's journey to defeat 16 colossi to resurrect a loved one.
28:12Your confrontation against Malice, the final one, is fittingly epic and theatrical.
28:17The gargantuan being is accompanied by heavy rainfall to set the tone.
28:21The slow camera tilt upwards to reveal his stature is a subtle but stellar showcase.
28:31His body resembles a massive tower with flaming appendages and a height that reaches far into the sky.
28:37Although his intro isn't very long, it's completely breathtaking.
28:41As is Koatani's enchanting, melancholic score.
29:00The final boss in this Nintendo classic is lucky enough to have two fantastic intros.
29:06The final boss in this Nintendo classic is lucky enough to have two fantastic intros.
29:25After the castle collapses, Ganondorf will rise from the rubble.
29:29In one final act, his Triforce of Power glows brightly,
29:33and he transforms into the imposing, dual-sword-wielding Ganon.
29:37Blending the villain's human desires with the rage of a beast was an unbelievable moment.
29:42And it was one of many that solidified Ocarina as one of the series' strongest entries.
29:52Darth Vader, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
30:05Even if we had no idea who Darth Vader was,
30:09his entrance here still would have terrified us to our very core.
30:14Throughout the game, former Padawan Kal is hunted by the Empire's Inquisitors.
30:18The member who plays the biggest role is Trilla, also known as the Second Sister.
30:23She's set up to be the main villain, and her defeat nearly brings her back to the light side.
30:28Sadly, she doesn't get the chance.
30:30The camera is positioned to show Trilla's monumental fear, and for a second, you wonder what has her so
30:37frightened. And then you hear that tell-tale sound.
30:50It's a tremendous, panic-inducing exhibit of a pop culture icon that only makes you more anxious
30:56when you realize he doesn't have a health bar.
31:02You would be wise to surrender.
31:07Did we leave off one of your favorite boss fight intros?
31:10Be sure to let us know about it in the comments, and we'll see you next time.
31:13of the year last time.
31:14We'll see you next time.
