Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the top 100 best video game
00:16bosses of all time. We'll be looking at the most memorable boss fights from both recent years in
00:21gaming but also the ones that stood the test of time throughout the years. Boss fight spoilers
00:26ahead number 100 the fridge former control
00:46if I look away it hurts me the oldest house is home to many oddities and among them are what the FBC calls
00:54altered items you'll stumble upon a lot of them throughout your playthrough but this fridge in
00:58particular transports you to an alternate dimension where a supposedly god-like being starts speaking
01:03to you after a few seconds the former opens its giant eye and the fight is on we don't understand
01:09what it's saying and its eye is the only thing lighting up the otherwise dark arena defeating
01:14it transports you back outside the fridge but it just leaves you thinking what the heck was that
01:19the fridge seems fixed number 99 the ender dragon minecraft
01:35minecraft had its earliest public release back in 2009 but it would take two years before notch
01:39added the ender dragon in an update along with its area known as the end to find the entrance you gotta
01:45craft eyes of ender which will lead you to a portal in this otherwise seemingly innocent game we're
01:50suddenly fighting a giant evil dragon in the void dimension it's the least you would expect from
01:54minecraft but it's just so cool the ender dragon itself is a pretty good boss fight unlike everything
01:59else you've fought in the game so far
02:01number 98 cyberdemon doom
02:16doom back in its inception days changed gaming as a whole in 2016 id software shocked the world with
02:22their remake of doom the result is one of the most fun first person shooter games available to date of
02:28course it wouldn't be a real remake without the cyberdemon this already amazing classic doom boss
02:33returns in spectacular fashion just so we can kick its ass again two decades later except now he's way
02:39faster stronger and has a much larger arsenal the cyberdemon re-cements itself as one of the coolest
02:44bosses of all time
02:55number 97 lich king world of warcraft wrath of the lich king the day you were born the very forests of
03:03lordaeron whispered the name
03:08arthas there are hardly any rpg gamers out there who don't know the lich king in a warcraft 3 story the
03:14once noble prince arthas menethil laid his hands upon the cursed rune blade frostmourne to save
03:19his kingdom it stole his soul and slowly led him down the path to becoming the most badass fantasy
03:24villain and raid boss ever if you don't show up with at least 24 other players get ready to lose
03:29even if you win there's no winning here as bolvar 4 dragon becomes forced to take up the mantle of
03:34lich king to contain the scourge
03:36tell them only that the lich king is dead and that bolvar 4 dragon died with him
03:44number 96 viper titanfall 2
03:49voodoo one viper's on station your journey ends here pilot
03:54the titanfall games especially titanfall 2 managed to create a completely unique blend of gameplay in
03:59the fps genre it's fluid fast and brings an interesting system to the table with its titans
04:04and it's only this game that could pull off a boss fight like viper it's hard not to be in awe as
04:09you clash with his titan on top of a moving ship the set piece is stunning and viper himself is pretty
04:14intriguing too he nearly took out jack but luckily bt-7274 had our back take the shot
04:22ahhh earthbound this seemingly innocuous game has a terrifying secret how are we supposed to know
04:44that we'd be scarred forever by this evil nightmare fuel alien that's gygas also known as the embodiment
04:50of evil and the universal cosmic destroyer it wants to sentence the world to infinite darkness
04:55if you didn't know earthbound you'd think we were making this up not only is it in a creepy area
05:00but the images in the fight that are supposedly gygas look horrifying who would have thought ness
05:04would save the world from aliens
05:13number 94 handsome jack borderlands 2
05:16hey you're right on time keys nearly ready
05:21but before i cleanse this planet for good
05:24i'm gonna avenge my daughter
05:26gearbox nailed it with borderlands so naturally
05:28borderlands 2 took the concept and turned everything up to 11. unlike its predecessor
05:33this game had a larger focus on the narrative which is mainly driven by its absolutely amazing
05:37antagonist handsome jack the game perfectly intertwines its gameplay with the story and handsome
05:42jack's boss fight is an amazing payoff gearbox didn't reinvent the wheel but it's a perfectly executed
05:47boss fight defeating jack and the warrior marks the end of the game fittingly enough we get to either
05:53finish jack ourselves or have lilith do it
06:00number 93 king k rule donkey k country
06:10it's time for a hit of nostalgia because we're talking about king k rule
06:13this massive goofball of a crocodile will do anything to defeat us including using his own crown as a
06:19boomerang and shooting us with cannonballs he'll even fake his own death and give us a fake credits roll
06:24no matter how many times he tries to get us he's no match for donkey kong this boss fight takes the
06:29cake for how silly it is and it's a perfect showcase of the game's overall tone upon his defeat we've earned a massive banana
06:42number 92 ansem kingdom hearts
06:46every light must fade every heart return to dark
06:52kingdom hearts made its own personal twist on crossovers with a seemingly impossible mix of cast
06:57members that somehow work perfectly together in the game it's the only franchise where you could have
07:01donald duck face off against sephiroth from final fantasy for genuine story reasons at the end of it
07:07we'll face off against ansem seeker of darkness it's a spectacle it's dynamic and the phases all the way
07:13through his transformation into the world of chaos are pure awesome sauce the boss fight wouldn't be
07:17complete without its soundtrack though it's dramatic intense and it sets the tone perfectly
07:22the world of chaos
07:31number 91 mulligan and thornton alan wake 2
07:34the world of chaos
07:43navigating through the scary dark forest surrounding bright falls saga eventually
07:47finds two deputies who have been corrupted by the dark presence they attack us and we're immediately
07:52thrown into the boss fight at first it seems simple enough to just take them out but they'll
07:56infinitely respawn until you've taken down all the nearby darkness nodes alan wake and alan wake 2 have a
08:01special way of integrating puzzles into combat thanks to how the enemies are actually written
08:06it's why this boss fight is so memorable and dynamic
08:16number 90 kefka palazzo final fantasy 6
08:19final fantasy 6 is a game that's often overlooked due to the massive success of ff7 but it actually
08:33has one of the most memorable boss fights in gaming meet kefka palazzo
08:39we've seen our fair share of evil jesters but kefka is the ultimate clown villain about halfway through
08:44the game kefka manipulates the warring triad and ascends to godhood and it's in this god form that
08:49we'll have to fight him he takes various monstrous forms that look nothing like anything we've seen
08:54so far in the game and his over-the-top attacks really hammer that home it's a stunning and intense boss
09:00battle
09:06number 89 hades hades
09:14number 88 the master fallout you think you can destroy me destroy me number 87 the enchantress shovel knight
09:36number 86 dracula castlevania
09:44majora's wrath the legend of zelda majora's mask
10:02majora's mask while created in the same engine with some of the same assets as ocarina of time
10:07had a stronger focus on the lives of its characters it's darker melancholic and more brooding all of
10:13this vastly improves the quality of its evil parasite antagonist majora up until its confrontation
10:18majora's mask has controlled skull kid but now it's up to link to finally take care of it once
10:23and for all in a three-stage boss fight after continuously transforming throughout the fight
10:28the last stage is majora's wrath you can tell just by looking at it this thing is pure evil it's a
10:34demonic humanoid creature with tentacle whip arms majora's mask did a great job making its central

13:26number 75 thor god of war ragnarok
13:36now show me this god killer i've heard so much about
13:41if there's one thing the god of war series has always gone above and beyond with it's boss fights
13:45they're undeniably some of the most cinematic and brutal fights players can experience
13:49the soft reboot in 2018 had set a completely new standard for how a good boss fight could look and
13:54feel so it's only natural that god of war ragnarok would smash it and completely knock it out of the
13:59park with its early game thor boss fight the guy kicks kratos's butt and straight up revives him
14:04just to beat him up some more the fight also just shows us how strong the leviathan axe is
14:10that clash with the frozen lightning is so cool no pun intended you're a destroyer like me

15:12you've nearly got it six to one you're the only one who can finish the job number 70 meta ridley
15:20metroid prime
15:30the metroid series has always had ridiculous ridley boss fights what if we told you that this alien
15:35dragon is a space pirate of all things metroid prime raised the bar to a new level thanks to it
15:39being 3d ridley is now a robot cyborg dragon all thanks to having exploded into pieces in the game
15:45prior this newly reconstructed meta ridley is able to push both the hardware and samus to new limits
15:50we simply hadn't seen this type of thing in a game before the boss fight itself was a whole new level
15:55of fun showing what was possible in an fps game at the time
16:03game at the time
16:08number 69 deathstroke
16:23Number 68. Rockford. Hi-Fi Rush.
16:38Number 67. Destroyer Caradrius. Metaphor, ReFantasio.
16:53Number 66. Kessler. Infamous.
17:08Number 65. Shao Kahn. Mortal Kombat series.
17:13Outworld doesn't need your empire.
17:18My empire is Outworld.
17:21If you've ever played any of the older Mortal Kombat games, or MK9, then you know that Shao Kahn is a total menace.
17:28That's nothing new, considering in MK2, Shao Kahn kept doing endless strings with minimal recovery and a bombastic damage output.
17:35However, considering the popularity and size of MK9, it's safe to say that that one has the most infamous Shao Kahn.
17:41He has an ultra-aggressive AI and you can't armor him, and it's difficult to hit combos on him.
17:51He's likely one of the most unfair boss designs in fighting game history.
17:55Number 64. Pyramid Head. Silent Hill 2.
18:08Number 63. The Devil. Cuphead.
18:13Number 62. Sin. Final Fantasy X.
18:23Number 61. El Impoluto.
18:27Assassin's Creed IV. Black Flag.
18:43Assassin's Creed IV. Black Flag.
18:55Number 60. Detlef. The Witcher 3. Wild Hunt. Blood and Wine.
19:00The Witcher 3. Wild Hunt had a significantly profound impact on both RPGs and the gaming industry as a whole.
19:14It's masterfully showed a new level of narrative storytelling in an open-world game, and in doing so, evolved RPG quest design forever.
19:21It even got two pretty hefty expansions in Hearts of Stone, and later Blood and Wine, to wrap up the game's story.
19:27The latter, in particular, was designed as a sort of epilogue to Geralt's journey.
19:31What better boss fight to wrap up such a phenomenal game than Detlef?
19:34There are emotional stakes, the narrative consequences are there, and the mechanics of the fight are excellent.
19:39You just can't ask for a better send-off to The Witcher 3.
19:49Number 59. GLaDOS. Portal.
19:52There was even going to be a party for you.
19:55A big party that all your friends were invited to.
19:58I invited your best friend the companion cube.
20:01Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him.
20:05Number 58. Queen Zeal. Chrono Trigger.
20:08Number 57. Andross. Star Fox 64.
20:21Only I have the brains to ruin my life.
20:27Number 56. Lexazia The Complete. Lies of P.
20:32Number 55. Sigma. Mega Man X.
20:49While it's hard to talk about whether the mechanics of Mega Man X aged well, its impact on the industry most definitely did.
21:03Multiple phases and boss fights weren't that popular yet.
21:06Even today, it's still a difficult and satisfying boss fight to beat.
21:09It's got all the makings of a goat. Sigma is a great nemesis to us, each phase is unique, and Sigma's visual design is strikingly memorable.
21:16Finally, the music and the vibes are just perfect.
21:20This boss fight definitely solidifies Sigma as one of the most iconic villains in gaming.
21:32Number 54. Octobot King. Splatoon 3.
21:36Number 53. Moon Lord. Terraria.
21:54Number 52. Shadow Queen. Paper Mario. The Thousand Year Door.
22:04Number 51. Fatalis. Monster Hunter World. Iceborne.
22:08Number 51. Fatalis. Monster Hunter World. Iceborne.
22:11Number 50. Verdugo. Resident Evil 4.
22:14Resident Evil 4.
22:24Resident Evil 4 is a special game. It's had a unique effect on the survival horror genre and gaming as a whole.
22:30It's shifted the series and third-person shooters to its iconic over-the-shoulder perspective.
22:33It's got engaging combat mechanics, it's got an atmosphere that's found nowhere else, and characters, both friendly and not, are well designed.
22:37It's tough to forget the Verdugo encounter. It's a boss we can't just face head-on. The set piece is intense and scary.
22:42In fact, most people probably gave up on defeating him and just ran away instead.
22:47I think you need to chill out.
22:49Number 49. Darth Malik. Star Wars. Knights of the Old Republic.
22:54Star Wars. Knights of the Old Republic.
23:11Number 49. Star Wars. Knights of the Old Republic.
23:16Number 48. The Nihilam. Half-Life.
23:37Number 47. Lord Shimura. Ghost of Tsushima.
23:45Number 46. The Guardian. Breath of Fire 3.
24:00Number 45. The Icon of Sin. Doom Eternal.
24:14It didn't just stop at the first one. The series kept going, only getting better and better.
24:18Originally, the Icon of Sin was the final boss in Doom 2. Now, the Icon of Sin is a boss in Doom Eternal.
24:24Simply said, it's a gargantuan demon we have to slay and it is awesome.
24:28It's a long-awaited rematch for Doom fans.
24:31The sheer size is so over-the-top that you can't help but laugh as it slowly loses its armor.
24:36It's a fitting climax to Doom Eternal.
24:38Number 44. Master Hand. Super Smash Brothers.
24:52Number 43. Doc Ock. Marvel's Spider-Man.
25:04Marvel's Spider-Man.
25:18Number 42. Zeus. God of War 3.
25:26Number 41. Mother Brain. Super Metroid.
25:38Number 40. Mr. X. Resident Evil 2.
25:45Resident Evil 2.
25:48Resident Evil 2 has always been innovative, even in the first two games.
25:51Unlike most boss fights in designated arenas, Mr. X would continuously appear in unexpected places throughout the Raccoon City Police Department.
25:59While some entrances were tied to cutscenes and scripted encounters, others are completely random.
26:04Capcom nailed this one, as Mr. X is just such a fun idea in a zombie game.
26:08It puts pressure on exploration and rushes the player, which is a nice change of pace.
26:13Plus, we can shoot his hat off in the remake.
26:15It's pretty cute.
26:16We do get to defeat him at the end of the game in an all-out fight, but it's really more so the journey than the destination for this one.
26:30Number 39. Olmec. Spelunky.
26:33Number 38. The Rat King. The Last of Us Part II.
26:54Number 37. M. Bison. Street Fighter II.
26:58Number 36. The Creator. Bayonetta.
27:21Number 35. Ganon. The Legend of Zelda. Ocarina of Time.
27:28Number 39. The Legend of Zelda.
27:30Number 36. The Legend of Zelda.
27:31Number 36. The Legend of Zelda.
27:37Number 39. The Legend of Zelda.
27:38Number 39. The Legend of Zelda.
27:40Number 39. The Legend of Zelda.
27:42Number 39. The Legend of Zelda.
27:44Ocarina of Time is likely the most iconic Zelda game of all time.
27:46If it isn't, it sure has one of the most iconic boss battles of all time.
27:49It's a very memorable two-phase battle, where we first fight Ganondorf in his sorcerer king form.
27:53It's a tense, cinematic fight where we deflect his attacks back at him.
27:54Afterwards, Ganondorf transforms into Ganon, a massive, powerful demon beast.
27:57time we fight him without the Master Sword. The music is phenomenal, and the setting of
28:00the collapsing castle really sets the tone. It's dramatic, it's exciting, and it's memorable.
28:11Number 34. Laura, The Evil Within
28:23Number 33. Avion, Shadow of the Colossus
28:27Number 32. Psycho Mantis, Metal Gear Solid
28:40You are powerful indeed, but I know your weak point. Meryl, stand right where he can see
28:50you and blow your brains out.
28:53Stop, Meryl!
28:57Number 31. Mr. Freeze, Batman Arkham City
29:01Number 30. Death Egg Robot, Sonic the Hedgehog 2
29:15Before Sonic, platformers were always focused on deliberate, careful movements like in Mario.
29:27Sonic would completely turn this notion on its head, introducing a gameplay style revolving
29:32around speed and momentum. Of course, this is upheld in Sonic 2, but the game managed to make some
29:37pretty deep boss fights even though the idea of the gameplay system was simple. That's why the
29:41Death Egg Zone is so memorable. It featured not one, but two completely different yet badass boss fights.
29:47Mecha Sonic and the Death Egg Robot. It stands out as being really difficult. It's hard to forget dealing
29:53with Mecha Sonic and the Death Egg Robot in the same level.
30:01Number 29. EVE, Nier Automata
30:03Massive energy signature detected.
30:05What is it?
30:07The energy seems to be coming from a large number of linked machine life forms.
30:11He's absorbing the life force of whatever's left on the network.
30:13Number 28. Alma, Ninja Gaiden Black
30:25Number 27. The Radiance, Hollow Knight
30:35Number 26. Marks, Kirby Superstar
30:45Number 25. Death, Castlevania Symphony of the Night
30:57The boss fight against Death in Symphony of the Night is truly iconic and steeped in an utterly dreadful atmosphere.
31:03Unlike most boss fights that are somewhat telegraphed, this fight isn't preceded by any kind of corridor or any other buildup.
31:09Instead, Death just suddenly appears in the Royal Chapel and he's accompanied by a pretty chilling sound effect as well as a music change.
31:16It's a pretty difficult fight, as Death comes with a very wide range of attacks that are hard to dodge and to deal with in general.
31:22He'll even pull his cloak off and show his true form.
31:25It's just such a memorable fight, both due to Death himself but also for it being so early into the game.
31:31Number 24. Ev'eterno, Blasphemous 2
31:41Number 23. Xan'za, Xenoglade Chronicles
31:59Number 23. Xan'za, Xenoglade Chronicles
32:11Number 22. Kerrigan, Queen of Blades, StarCraft
32:17What are you worried about, Jim?
32:19He died the way all Protoss hoped to, in combat.
32:23He died because you betrayed him.
32:25Number 21. Balder, God of War
32:27Number 23. Xan'za, Xenoglade Chronicles
32:39Number 20. Xan'za, Xenoglade Chronicles
32:41Number 20. Xan'za, Xenoglade Chronicles
32:43It is time for our dance to end.
32:53System Shock 2 set a new benchmark for immersive first-person games.
32:58It went on to influence and inspire thousands of games even today.
33:01But if you're a hardcore gamer, you've likely heard of its villain, Shodan.
33:04She's a unique case in the sense that the whole game is like one long boss fight against her.
33:09She's basically a really persistent threat you just can't escape.
33:12Our final confrontation against her takes place in cyberspace.
33:15We defeat her with our wits rather than in a traditional gunfight.
33:19Shodan, thanks to her personality, has become the de facto iconic boss of the immersive sim genre.
33:24Improve you, transform you into something more efficient.
33:32Number 20. Doctor Nefarious, Ratchet & Clank
33:36Ratchet & Clank is a hugely beloved franchise and gaming developed by Insomniac and published by Sony.
33:52In 2016, we got not just a remake, but rather a reimagining that retells the original Ratchet & Clank story with a fresher and deeper storyline.
34:00As a result, we now face Doctor Nefarious in the remake of the first game instead of the third, up your arsenal.
34:06Of course, Ratchet & Clank always had dynamic boss battles, but none quite as dynamic as the Doctor Nefarious fight in this one.
34:12It's fast, saturated, explosive, and most important of all, fun.
34:16Number 18. Nemesis, Resident Evil 3
34:30Having gotten acquainted with a tyrant in Resident Evil 2, we're shocked to find a similar version of it attacking and chasing us throughout Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3.
34:40He's badder, uglier, and stronger.
34:42Similar to Mr. X, he relentlessly stalks Jill throughout most of the game.
34:46There's just this constant unease and fear of encountering him.
34:49But unlike Mr. X, this guy can run.
34:51His name being Nemesis is very fitting too, and we have multiple boss fights with him throughout the game.
34:56By the time of the Clock Tower fight, this guy has already transformed into a giant front-flipping flesh lizard.
35:01We won't soon forget what it's like to be chased by the Nemesis throughout the streets of Raccoon City.
35:06Number 17. The Queen, Aiko
35:22Before the smashing success of Shadow of the Colossus, there was a very similar, just as mysterious game by the same devs.
35:28Aiko, a very special and unique game, was one of the first to contribute to the notion of viewing video games as an art form.
35:34Whether it's a sequel or a prequel to Shadow of the Colossus, or perhaps completely unconnected, the two share lots in common.
35:40And, hey, both games end with the player character trying to protect a girl.
35:44In this case, we're fighting an evil queen.
35:46The ambiance, atmosphere, and resolution of the fight leave a strong, lasting impression.
35:51It's so emotionally loaded, you can't help but think about what you just went through.
36:01Number 16. Cynthia
36:03Pokemon Diamond Version and Pokemon Pearl Version
36:13With a whopping 107 new Pokemon and the introduction of the region of Sinnoh, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl exploded onto the scene in 2006 and 2007.
36:22We're introduced to Cynthia, a powerful trainer and also the Pokemon champion of Sinnoh.
36:26We get to fight her, and her boss battle is widely considered one of, if not the most challenging in the entire Pokemon franchise.
36:32Her team is shockingly well-rounded, so she just doesn't have one big single weakness.
36:37If you look aside from that, even the Pokemon individually are really strong.
36:41As icing on the cake, her AI is pretty strategic, upping the difficulty.
36:45Cynthia provides an unforgettable boss fight in Diamond and Pearl.
36:57Number 15. Dr. Wily
36:59Mega Man
37:00The original Mega Man laid the groundwork for a ton of modern games with its introduction of concepts like non-linear level selection, allowing you to tackle the game in whichever order you like.
37:17It even introduced the idea of boss weapons, giving Mega Man a new weapon each time he defeated a boss.
37:22The overarching villain of the series, Dr. Wily, will prove to be a big thorn in our side, all the way up to his actual boss fight, where he throws his completely outlandish, even comical machines at us.
37:33It's a boss fight that invented the blueprint for what most boss fights are today.
37:37A spectacle that tests our skills and what we've learned, and one last showcase of the game's unique character.
37:43Number 14. Diablo
37:52Diablo
38:00No one quite does atmospheric horror fantasy like Diablo, particularly the first one.
38:05It masterfully created a gothic, dark, genuinely off-putting atmosphere.
38:09The dungeons are claustrophobic and the soundtrack is haunting.
38:13The devil of the same namesake, Diablo, perfectly encapsulates this.
38:17It's an absolutely horrifying creature at the deepest levels of the dungeons beneath Tristram.
38:22All that build up for a perfect payoff.
38:24Diablo is every bit as terrifying as he's been described.
38:27His attacks are powerful and cover a wide variety of situations, so you've gotta put everything you've learned to good use.
38:33It's just hard to forget the final levels of Hell.
38:36It's grotesque and shocking, yet it remains a warm memory for fans.
38:46Number 13. Isshin, the Sword Saint
38:49Shadows Die Twice
38:51It's hard to have a conversation about boss fights without talking about From Software, considering just how iconic their Souls series and now Elden Ring are.
39:10In 2019, they broke the mold and released Sekiro.
39:13This game seriously pumped up the difficulty of their bosses.
39:16It's a faster game with no stamina bar, wanting you to parry bosses something up to 10 to 15 times in a row.
39:22If you feel confident in your skills, get a load of Isshin, the Sword Saint.
39:26It's one of the most brutal boss fights From Software has ever created.
39:29It's beautiful, atmospheric, and extremely difficult.
39:33Once you think you've got his number, he'll break all the rules and pull out a glock on you.
39:37Where's your manners, Isshin?
39:46Number 12. Mecha Hitler
39:49Wolfenstein 3D
39:56If you had to sell someone on Wolfenstein as a franchise, you'd show them the final boss of Wolfenstein 3D.
40:01Yes, we're considering the other games as well with this statement.
40:04It's Mecha Hitler!
40:06Is that not the most outlandish, ridiculous thing you've heard so far in this video?
40:10But Mecha Hitler is very much real.
40:12It was provocative for its time, and it still is today.
40:15Speaking of today, we know Wolfenstein as a very over-the-top franchise, but no one expected Mecha Hitler back when Wolfenstein 3D released.
40:22It's one of the biggest WTF moments in gaming ever.
40:25It's so audacious, you just have to see it to believe it.
40:28Number 11. Rafael
40:31Baldur's Gate 3
40:32This isn't a rebellion.
40:34It's a revolt.
40:35I'm revolting!
40:37Then hope dies today!
40:42Baldur's Gate 3 is the most fun D&D simulator on the market right now.
40:48Pretty early into the game, we meet Rafael, a charismatic trickster devil who offers us a way out of our tadpole problem.
40:55However, near the end of the game, we get the option to sneak into his residence, the House of Hope.
41:00Not only is this area optional, it's kind of hidden.
41:03It's a shame because it's one of the most fun areas in the game, and it culminates in the best boss fight the game has to offer, Rafael.
41:10Not only must we fight this comically evil devil, but he spits a couple of bars while trying to kill us.
41:15It is awesome.
41:17Hell, hell.
41:18Hell has its laws.
41:19Hell, hell.
41:20Effective of wars.
41:22Curtain falls.
41:23But hold your reward.
41:25Squirm, squirm.
41:26For now down here come the claw.
41:29Number 10.
41:31Dark Link.
41:32The Legend of Zelda series.
41:36The idea of having to fight your own evil twin or mirror image in a game could possibly have come from elsewhere, but it's never been executed as well as in The Legend of Zelda.
41:48Dark Link first appears in Zelda 2 The Adventure of Link and has appeared in several games since that.
41:53He always mimics Link in what he's able to do, fighting us with our own tools.
41:57The fights are always accompanied by an awesome set piece, like in the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time.
42:02In this fight, Dark Link starts as a shadow but gradually turns into a full blown silhouette of Link.
42:07Number 9.
42:08The Nameless King.
42:09Dark Souls 3.
42:10The Nameless King is an incredible test of skill.
42:14This retired god of war is widely regarded as one of the hardest fights in the Souls series and for good reason.
42:21He's hidden in the kind of secret optional area, Arch Dragon Peak.
42:26The area itself is already brutally difficult.
42:28At the end, you're rewarded with The Nameless King.
42:30But if you have the execution, this boss is so satisfying to beat.
42:31It's got a chaotic first phase as you fight his mount, the King of the Storm.
42:32Phase 2 turns everything up to 11 as The Nameless King barrazes you with relentless speed.
42:33If Dark Souls 3 has a chance to beat you, it's got a chaotic first phase as you fight his mount, the King of the Storm.
42:34Phase 2 turns everything up to 11 as The Nameless King barrazes you with relentless speed.
42:35If Dark Souls 3 has a skill check, it's this guy.
42:36Dark Souls 3 is one of the hardest fights in the Souls series and for good reason.
42:38He's hidden in the kind of secret optional area, Arch Dragon Peak.
42:42The area itself is already brutally difficult.
42:44At the end, you're rewarded with The Nameless King.
42:47But if you have the execution, this boss is so satisfying to beat.
42:51It's got a chaotic first phase as you fight his mount, the King of the Storm.
42:54Phase 2 turns everything up to 11 as The Nameless King barrazes you with relentless speed.
42:59If Dark Souls 3 has a skill check, it's this guy.
43:05Number 8 Liquid Ocelot Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots
43:29Hideo Kojima sure knows how to direct boss fights.
43:32In one of the most cinematic, cathartic, ridiculous and over-the-top boss fights ever,
43:36we got Solid Snake pitted up against Liquid Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 4.
43:40They want to fight each other so hard that they start healing each other just to keep going.
43:44The fight integrates our control of Snake seamlessly into its cutscenes,
43:48and while it's nothing that hasn't been done before, it's never been this rad.
43:51After years of dealing with Liquid's antics throughout the MGS games, Snake comes out on top one last time.
43:57You're pretty good.
44:03You're pretty good.
44:07Good.
44:09Number 7 Sands Undertale
44:15Undertale brings some of the most unique RPG game mechanics ever, with super fun encounters
44:20and even a special take on bullet hell combat.
44:23It's got an amazing story, and there are real consequences for your choices.
44:27That's because it's got a spare, or rather a mercy system baked into its core.
44:31The game uses it to tell its story, but also to punish you.
44:35The one who's gonna need mercy on a genocide run is you against Sans.
44:39Sans has always been our ally and friend throughout the game, but if you've been an out-of-control
44:43murder machine, be prepared for one of the hardest boss fights in gaming history.
44:47By the way, the music is insane.
45:04Number 6.
45:05Senator Armstrong – Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
45:08We know that Kojima knows how to make a boss fight, but if you haven't played Metal Gear
45:19Rising Revengeance, then you haven't seen anything yet.
45:23This whole game is a total rollercoaster, and somehow still manages to top itself in the
45:27Senator Armstrong boss fight.
45:29It's a boss fight with a lot of stages.
45:31Each phase is unique and fun.
45:33After a lengthy standoff, we finish the fight with the help of Sam Sword.
45:36You'll probably remember Senator Armstrong's speech more than anything else, though.
45:41Nanomachines, son!
45:49Number 5.
45:50German – Bloodborne
46:02Bloodborne in itself is an extraordinary gaming experience.
46:05It's some of the best From Software has to offer, and it overachieves all the way through
46:09the end as well.
46:10On a normal playthrough, the last boss you'll be faced with is German, the first hunter.
46:15It's so unexpected.
46:16After all, German's in a wheelchair for the entire game up until this point.
46:20No one would expect him to stand up and bring out the number one coolest trick weapon of
46:24them all, the Burial Blade.
46:26He's arguably one of the coolest boss fights in the entire series, and he's accompanied
46:30by a hauntingly sad soundtrack.
46:32What a boss.
46:46Number 4.
46:47Virgil – Devil May Cry 3 – Dante's Awakening
46:49Devil May Cry 3 sees us in control of a younger Dante, still getting a grip on his power and
47:01establishing his demon slaying business.
47:04On our journey, we'll butt heads with our stronger, more experienced brother Virgil.
47:08He's the perfect nemesis.
47:10We fight him three times in total, each time doing a little bit better than the last.
47:14The game does such a good job of making you want to beat this guy.
47:17Each fight, he gets a bit more difficult, too.
47:20It's almost like the game grows with you.
47:21Virgil is the classic, best video game recurring nemesis, even still in the later DMC entries.
47:35Number 3.
47:36Ornstein and Smao – Dark Souls
47:48We think everyone can agree that the swaggiest drip in Dark Souls comes from the swaggiest
47:52bosses.
47:53If Ornstein and Smao didn't immediately come to mind, then you just don't know style.
47:57All kidding aside though, Anor Londo is such an unforgettable area.
48:01It's only fitting it'd end with Ornstein and Smao as well.
48:04These two just don't get enough credit, they're incredibly memorable.
48:07It's all thanks to their visual design, difficulty and of course the area itself is a big contributor
48:12as well.
48:13Plus, there are really only two Souls players anyways.
48:16Those who like Ornstein's armor and those who like Smao's.
48:28Number 2.
48:29Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII
48:42The industry has no shortage of evil katana-wielding badasses these days, but no one does it better
48:46than Sephiroth.
48:48This mysterious hero turned evil is an absolute all-time classic villain.
48:51He's got a tragic and intriguing backstory.
48:54When it finally comes to facing off with him, the game has already gone above and beyond
48:58to establish his strength.
49:00Strength aside, both Cloud and Zack had initially idolized Sephiroth.
49:03Yet, Sephiroth's change in ideology and philosophy now directly opposes ours.
49:08It's a perfect climax to the story of FF7.
49:10We've spent the whole game uncovering Cloud's nightmares and it's time to put them to rest.
49:37Number 1.
49:38Melania – Blade of Mikkola – Elden Ring
49:41I am Melania – Blade of Mikkola – a haunting sentence that's sure to send chills down your
49:58spine if you've played Elden Ring.
50:00Melania became outright infamous due to her difficulty, a difficulty mostly stemming from
50:04her waterfowl dance attack.
50:06Furthermore, she heals on hit even if you block her attacks, meaning you have to get good
50:11at dodging if you expect to win any time soon.
50:14She's such a difficult boss that one player even got famous just by helping people defeat
50:18her.
50:19She's the best boss fight of the last few decades in gaming, as she perfectly combines
50:23all aspects of a great boss.
50:25The way you find her is pretty awesome too.
50:39If you've fought every boss on this list, tell us who we missed down below.
50:58She's the best of her story.
51:16She's a secret.
