00:06want to talk about something called the danger jesus warned believers about and it is not sin
00:14ah jesus warned believers more about distraction than judgment the real danger for the believer is
00:24not what's coming upon this world but what is settling in their hearts uh help us jesus commands
00:35us to detach our hearts from this world so that we can remain faithful to him and not be caught
00:44unaware
00:46in the judgment not become caught unaware in time of crisis not become unaware when god intervenes
00:54help us today so we're going to come out of the text and take heed to yourselves lest at any
01:00time
01:01your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness and cares of this life and so that
01:09day comes upon you unawares so this text tells us to take heed of our hearts and it's telling us
01:18to do
01:18it for a reason for fear that our hearts be overcharged when we're talking about overcharged
01:25we're talking about your heart being overburdened distractions of this world can overburden your
01:33heart there's a subtle way that can overtake your heart so much that you can't focus on jesus
01:40oh that you're so focused with other things that you're not that you're not attentive to jesus i see
01:44it all the time i see believers all the time with a subtle weight that's come up little bit by
01:49little
01:50bit responsibility by responsibility uh care by care to the point where their hearts too heavy i can't
01:57look up to jesus and be too focused on that because i'm focused on this this and this the problem

02:01the human heart is the cares of this world can crowd jesus out you have limited space in your heart
02:11heart so you have to reserve how much space is reserved for jesus where you're putting up guard
02:18rails no no no no i cannot overburden my heart because i if i have overburdened my heart i will
02:24not be faithful to jesus jesus is not calling us to abandon life there's things that we need to do
02:29there's life responsibilities but we are to hold it loosely i have to make sure and be vigilant i got
02:35to
02:35make sure and take heed to myself that i'm not overcharging my heart hold things loosely i'm not going to
02:41care too much about that because i care too much about those bills too much about those that
02:45situation too much about those relationships then um then it's taking up too much of my heart and i
02:50can't focus on god so i gotta handle life a little bit loosely the problem with having the weight of
02:57this world overtake and overpower our heart or the text is overcharging our heart is our heart becomes
03:05crowded with other things before it becomes cold to the things of god so crowded by everything else
03:14that now i'm insensitive to god i'm insensitive to his voice i'm insensitive to what he would have me
03:20do i'm not even looking that way because my heart is crowded and crowding god out and now it's becoming
03:27cold towards god because it's getting more and more distant i don't have the room for god in my heart
03:33do you have room for god in your heart help us today god jesus identifies three forces
03:40that suddenly erode in our spiritual alertness it's slowly but slowly that makes us more and
03:48more spiritually alert it says right here three forces one is surfeting the other one is drunkenness
03:54and the other one is cares of this life let me explain it one by one number one surfeting it's
04:01a
04:01word that we don't use commonly but it basically means to over indulge are you over indulging even
04:08in that which is lawful it's okay to watch a movie but are you over indulging so much uh entertainment
04:16it's okay to be entertained every now and then but are you over indulging in that which is lawful to
04:21the
04:21point where it's dominating your attention oh you're are you surfeting it's dominating your appetite
04:28your spiritual appetite our hearts can be so filled with earth so filled with earthly things that it has
04:35no more room for heaven so satisfied with earthly things that it crowds jesus out are you surfeting
04:44the second thing it talks about is drunkenness and when we're talking about drunkenness we're not
04:49just talking about alcohol or intoxicating substances substances we're talking about anything that numbs
04:56the conscience anything that dwarfs our urgency towards the things of god your urgency you're not
05:03so urgent about it your conscience you know it's not tugged uh as much because of whatever it is you're
05:09in
05:10or that softens your alertness anything it could be it could be absolutely anything that you're intoxicated
05:16with i'm intoxicated with uh with someone with thoughts of someone oh a romantic partner oh i'm
05:25so intoxicated by thinking about them loving me that i'm not alert to the things of god that i should
05:30be
05:30oh it could be absolutely anything we're intoxicated with drunkenness makes a person present but unaware
05:37unaware what's going around it dulls your spiritual discernment you're not spiritually attentive to
05:46god as much because you're drunken with whatever wine your own like i said the wine of somebody
05:53the wine of some sport i want to be so great at this sport that i'm so drunken i'm so
05:59inebriated by it
06:01i'm so indulged in it uh let me let me get off that point the third force that quietly erodes
06:06our spiritual
06:07alertness and occupies our heart gradually is the cares of this life uh we're talking about legitimate
06:15concern there's something that we got to be concerned about we got to be concerned about work
06:19we got to be concerned about the bills we got to be concerned about family we got to be concerned
06:23about finances we got to be concerned about all types of other responsibilities but these
06:28responsibilities we got to be careful because they quietly consume our attention we only have so much
06:34we are we are a limited resource we only have so much emotional energy it takes and it saps our
06:41emotional energy so i have to be it was i have to be careful with the cares of this life
06:46like i said
06:47earlier carry this life loosely too many anxieties from this world fractures my focus for me to be
06:54able to minister to people i have to put guardrails up because i need time with god no time with
07:00god
07:00i have nothing to say to people help us today god these weights of the cares of life can weigh
07:07our souls down so we're talking about surfeiting overindulging drunkenness and the cares of life
07:15together create a perfect storm that'll dull your your senses towards god this text also talks about
07:22the cost of neglecting to detach our hearts from the world we're to detach our hearts but if we
07:28neglect to do so the bible says and so the day comes upon you unaware it's talking about a day
07:34of judgment or possibly a divine day of crisis or divine intervention however god's gonna move a day
07:41will catch you unaware it'll catch us unaware if we're so intoxicated by something else it'll arrive
07:48suddenly it'll give us a spiritual surprise uh and why and why does this matter it's saying it'll catch
07:56us unaware because if things catch us unaware we're gonna have regret it's he's the jesus warning us for
08:01a reason you're gonna have regret for not watching uh it it also saying it'll catch you unaware meaning
08:07you won't have confidence in that day oh you you're probably gonna be a bit fearful in that day
08:12oh and you're gonna suffer some loss in that day we want to be keeping our eyes on jesus so
08:18we can have
08:18confidence and coolness when god shows up however in the day of judgment in the day of divine intervention
08:24however he shows up i want to have calmness and coolness in it because my eyes are on god himself
08:30being watchful the bible talks about it all the time watchful vigilant um because that honors god
08:37oh when you're doing that you can have peace in the day of his intervention
08:42ah even if it might be talking about when christ come back in that day you'll have calm peace
08:49uh reassurance you don't have to be you have confidence you don't god don't have to catch you
08:54disoriented where you have regret jesus saying these things because there's consequences to not
09:03watching help us god to be watchful so so god is talking to the believers there's a danger that jesus
09:10is warning believers about and it is not sin it is being preoccupied and not watchful
09:18not watching over the cares of your heart and disengaging when necessary there needs to be a
09:25balance help me to disengage from some things god help me not to be overcharged by some things
09:31overburdened and hold life loosely so i can attend to you and be attentive to what you're calling me to
