00:00Mildred Scheel, bred by Tantau in 1976. Also introduced to the United Kingdom in 1977
00:10as Deep Secret. Whether you prefer to call this one Mildred Scheel or Deep Secret is
00:17entirely up to you. One thing I will caution against though is that Tantau later in 2023
00:24bred another red rose that was more burgundy and also chose to call that one Deep Secret.
00:32So please don't confuse these two because the fragrance on these two are not similar.
00:40Now the height of Mildred Scheel gets to be approximately 80 to 150 centimeters tall
00:48and 80 to 120 centimeters wide. So it is a big rose. How big it gets very much depends on
00:55how well you
00:56keep it down and how you cut it. It is hardy down to zone 6b and is quite cold hardy
01:04and also very
01:05disease resistant. The foliage in itself gets a very silver tone to it, a very silver taint.
01:13And what about the fragrance on this rose? I absolutely love the fragrance. It is an 8.5 out
01:22of 10 very strong Damask fragrance on this rose. If you like roses like Mr. Lincoln then you'll
01:30absolutely love this one too on the scent. And also if you like what's it called Gruff Indiana you'll also
01:39like Mildred Scheel on the scent. A very powerful, very, very pleasant scent on this one.
01:46The rose itself starts out very dark red at the outer petals before it fades to this more
01:52a pure red, more velouty red at the at the center. Kind of like you know from the more modern
02:00rose,
02:01Grafton Dian. I have always found this rose to be exceptionally floriferous. It is probably,
02:10I should say, it is the most floriferous of the very scented roses in red I have.
02:18It beats all the others I have that are extremely scented and this one tends to give me flushes of
02:26like
02:2812 flowers. Many of the others only give me flushes of 4. So if you're looking for a very
02:33floriferous, very prolific bloomer in the red color that is also very very fragrant, then Deep
02:41Secret or Mildred Scheel won't let you down for sure. As you can probably guess from my latest few
02:50weeks of raving about this rose. It is a rose I have grown to like a lot. It is an
02:57excellent rose
02:58for cut flowers. They last a long time inside in a ways. They're really really fragrant and
03:05I honestly think it is so beautiful to look at that pure velvety color up against the silver green
03:13foliage and that more dark red outer edge it gets. Honestly, the only drawback to this rose is it can
03:23get quite tall, so you have to place it at the back or at the middle of a flower bed
03:28and not in the front
03:29of it. But that's really the only bad thing I will say about Mildred Scheel. I have not had a
03:36black spot on it,
03:38I have not had a rose. It has been very very disease resistant and a lovely rose. And that
03:43fragrance combined with those beautiful big red blooms, combined with how prolific it is,
03:52honestly, I really love this rose. I really love Deep Secret. And if you've been looking for a very
03:58good red rose to grow and you're living in a more moderate climate and you can't grow Mr. Lincoln,
04:05I honestly believe this rose should be on the top of your shopping list because it is such a wonderful
04:13red rose to grow and it is so much better than many of the other or bad options you could
04:20choose for
04:21that spot. You have probably already guessed it. Deep Secret is getting a gold medal. That 8 out of 10
04:29wonderful health, combined with an 8.5 out of 10 wonderful damask fragrance, combined with the
04:37fact it is very floriferous, very winter hardy, combined with another fact that the flowers are
04:449 out of 10. Very wonderful to look at red flowers that get quite big and are excellent for cut
04:51flowers.
04:52In all honesty, this is a wonderful red rose, one of the absolute best.
