00:02More upheaval for an institution already under intense scrutiny.
00:07The current Chancellor of the ANU, himself a stand-in for the recently departed Julie Bishop,
00:12informed students and staff via email that several council members had decided to leave.
00:18I would like to sincerely thank these former council members for their service and contributions to ANU
00:24during a challenging period for the university.
00:26We've seen concern after concern about the way that council has been operating
00:31and I think this is an opportunity to actually ensure that we have a merits-based appointment process going forward.
00:37Two appointed council members are left, Dr Marshall and Andrew Metcalfe,
00:41who has just shifted into the acting pro-chancellor role.
00:44All while multiple investigations into the ANU operations continue.
00:49We think these resignations are appropriate, but some of the broader issues go to the structure of governance at the
00:56university.
00:56So it's not enough just to change the bums in the seats.
00:59We actually need to change the structure of how ANU is governed overall.
01:03The hunt now on for a new Chancellor and some new council members.
01:07In his message today, Dr Marshall tried to accentuate the positive.
01:11This period also provides an opportunity to renew and strengthen the university.
01:16On that, students and staff will be the judge.
