00:03Controversy, upheaval and governance problems. It's been a rough few years for the Australian
00:08National University.
00:11During a Senate hearing last year, demographer Liz Allen spoke of a toxic culture perpetrated
00:16by ANU leaders on their staff.
00:19I was bullied into near suicide. I miscarried a much-wanted baby. I've lost the opportunity
00:27of a promotion. I fear for my job.
00:31But those steering the ship took a different view.
00:34I've never had the hint of anything like that ever levelled against me. It came as an absolute
00:41shock to me and to anybody who's ever worked for me.
00:45It led to the resignation of the then Vice-Chancellor, Chancellor and several board members.
00:50It's been a very rough few years and just so much self-inflicted pain.
00:57Senator David Pocock has been a key scrutineer of the University. He's welcomed the apology
01:02to Dr Allen. Publications were made about Dr Allen that were false and unjustified. These
01:08publications should not have occurred and the University unreservedly apologises for the
01:13University's part in these events, for the maladministration of several processes and for its indefensible
01:19treatment of her. Dr Allen confirmed to the ABC the apology included a financial settlement.
01:25I look forward to helping the University rebuild trust and helping to ensure that what happened
01:31to me is not the experience of future whistleblowers.
01:34Now there's a real opportunity to actually chart a different course and get everyone on board.
