Former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has resigned as Chancellor of the Australian National University with immediate effect. Her six-year tenure came at a time of upheaval for the institution with a controversial restructure including job cuts and serious questions about its governance.

00:02Late last year, Julie Bishop was standing her ground.
00:06My contract concludes at the end of 2026.

00:14That same month, then-Vice-Chancellor Genevieve Bell announced her resignation.
00:20Today, the former Foreign Minister followed, citing concerns,
00:23following unprecedented and coordinated interference, the ANU Council is no longer able to discharge its legal and ethical obligations.
00:32The higher education sector is at a crossroads of regulatory overreach in the governance of our institutions or autonomy and
00:40academic freedom.
00:41And, I fear the collateral from this regulatory overreach will be the next generation of students and staff.
00:48I think staff and students at the ANU have been the collateral of poor leadership and poor governance.
00:56That is just so evident to everyone.

01:03There's been sustained anger over now-abandoned cost-cutting measures, governance and culture at the University.
01:10The last two years have been incredibly destructive, incredibly damaging to a lot of people, and that damage will take
01:15some time to heal.
01:16The University's Council says it's committed to providing a new period of strong and positive governance and leadership.
01:24Some want a shake-up of governance itself.
01:27A majority of members of Council be elected or be accountable to their communities and to their constituents, effectively.
01:34There's also things you can do. You can set up a Senate-style body at universities.
01:38There's no reason why we can't do that. It's done at top institutions around the world.
01:42With an Interim Vice-Chancellor who appears to have the support of staff, students and the unions,
01:48and a new process for selecting Miss Bishop's replacement agreed with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency,
01:54the Federal Government believes the ANU is on a path back to prestige.
01:58We support Texas' recommendation that an independent process be undertaken.
02:04We supported that at the time. We continue to support that.
02:07But I think Miss Bishop's departure means that a new leadership can be put in place.
