The state's corruption watchdog has announced it's investigating the former head of one of Sydney’s most powerful councils. Parramatta's former chief executive Gail Connolly is one of several council staff who'll be under scrutiny in hearings that begin next month.

00:01A powerful counsel under scrutiny, the Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating
00:08former Parramatta Council boss Gail Connolly and other council staff over allegations relating
00:14to surveillance, hiring and firing and the alleged misuse of funds and information.
00:19If this is a case where in truth the named persons have acted to secure their own interests
00:26or the interests of their friends then those are very serious matters and they need to
00:31be exposed.
00:32Gail Connolly has denied wrongdoing.
00:34In a statement she said, I maintain I have not acted inappropriately.
00:39That is why I welcome the opportunity to detail the facts before the Commission and clear my
00:45name.
00:45The council officers were raided as part of Operation Navara in July last year.
00:50Ms Connolly joined the council in 2023 and was sacked in October.
00:54Across more than three decades in local government she inspired both fierce devotion and strong
01:00criticism.
01:01I've had concerns for a number of years and I don't think I'm the only one and I'm really
01:06looking forward to ICAC shedding light on what has been occurring.
01:10Public hearings will begin May 11.
